HT6114 Slow start up on Mac Book Air second and fourth generations

Both of our Mac Book Air computers are slow at start-up. Average time to start-up is 41-65 sconds. Apple logo on screen with "circle" winding around... Any help our suggestions on how to reduce this start-up time would be appreciated.

If you go to System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items you will see a list of all of the applications that will start up when you turn on the machine. The only item i have in login items is 'itunes helper'. So for example, when i installed 'drop box' it was set by default to launch automatically when i turn on the computer. You can disable this in the app's settings or in 'Login items' window.

When are Mac Book Air 15'' and 17'' available?

It's supposedely coming out July 26th.
I must have missed that announcement.  To the best of my knowledge, Apple has made no announcements with respect to 15 and 17" MacBook Airs.  There is some chit chat on the web regarding updating the current versions, but there is no official word from Apple on that and certainly no release date.

  • SLOW start up on Mac book

    Here's my setup
    iMac with External HD
My iPhoto library is on the External HD.
So, when I start iPhoto from iMac it starts just fine.
When I start iPhoto from Mac book, it takes 2-3 minutes for iPhoto to start. It's NOT network speed! The EX HD spins up as soon as I start iPhoto from the Mac book. It's just that iPhoto seems to hang there for 2-3 minutes !?!?!?!?!
    Once started, everything's fine again.

  • Loud beep sound when starting up my Mac book air (2007), right before the classic start-up noise

There is a very loud beep right before the classic Mac start up "bong"
I'm thinking there might be something wrong with the ram...
    Any answers? Thanks!

Although it's an older article, for the most part it's applicable -
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538
The beep on startup is usually an indication of a failed RAM module. It's also possible that a recent firmware update on the machine was botched. If you didn't recently perform a firmware update then it's probably the RAM. As the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board it cannot be replaced individually, it'd require a full logic board replacement.
Given the age of the machine, it's unlikely still covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan and definitely not the one year limited warranty.
The next course of action would be to bring the machine into the Genius Bar or AASP and have them evaulate your repair options.

You're posting in the MacBook Pro, not Air, forum, but that's OK...
Apple decided a couple of years ago that wired Internet wasn't an important feature in their new units... so they created a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter for those who really need a wired connection. Have you tried one of those? You should be able to purchase the adapter at your local Apple Store or at the online Apple Store.
    Good luck,

  • USB Hub for Mac book air

I recently got a mac book air. And the problem i have is with the USB port. Since there is only one USB port i tried using a 4-port USB hub. Which is working fine on any other Microsoft laptop. ut wen i tried to use it with my mac air it doesnt seem to be working. The funny thing is my mouse is working fine if i connect it through this hub. but my external hard drives are not registering through the hub, but they work if i direct plug it into the port of the mac air. Please help. As i really need the hub for my mac air.

I have two USB hubs without a separate power supply. One is older (USB 1.1) and will drive an external hard drive, the newer hub (2.0) is more compact and will not support an external hard disk drive. I cannot find any listing of the power properties of the hubs themselves, or other hubs for sale, and so do not know which might work better. I suspect a non-powered hub is not ideal for an external hard disk drive.
My solution is to buy a small bluetooth mouse and forget about using a USB hub for a mouse and instead use the port mostly for a USB flash drive.

  • Stolen mac book air

    Hi
I have just had my mac book air stolen and I have all the settings on to find my mac I have down loaded the app on my phone and shows my MacBook on there but cannot locate it I have turned on the email when located setting and was just wondering when the MacBook is turned on they won't be able to enter my login but could log into the visitor one and if they do and connect to wifi or the Internet would my iPhone with the find iphone app installed be able to locate it and show me where the stolen mac is? or email me the position of it?

Find My Mac can be used to email you once a location is acquired. Once you have a location, then you may want to consider the wipe. But know that a wipe may also be a tip-off to the thief.
What it comes down to really is the knowledge that a thief has in Mac security, and your ability to approximate that knowledge that will dictate your course of action here. Your options are:
    1) WIpe now, or later.
    2) Send a message, if you dare. (usually done if you just think it was an innocent "lost and found" case)
    3) Continually check for location (very unlikely to work unless you have lots of time)
    4) Have Find My Mac send a location when available, by email.
    5) Contact the authorities (always, and right now)
    Good Luck
p.s. Templeton is right. Without punctuation, we're just guessing at what you are asking.

It sounds like you destroyed your boot partition and the recovery partition.  Depending on it's age, your MacBook Air might be able to do a net boot.  Plug and ethernet connection into it and attempt to boot.  If it has the right firmware, it will find a net boot configuration on the net and boot that.  Then it will give you a Recovery Partition like display and allow you to reinstall the OS X version that came with it.... assuming that it was Lion or ML.  If your computer came with Snow Leopard, then even the net boot won't work.
At that point you need a bootable USB Key, or an external DVD drive AND a Snow Leopard installation DVD.
An Apple Store, if there is one nearby, MAY be able to get you going again.  However, whatever is on the SSD now will be toast too.

  • Slow wifi on mac book air.. is this normal? (airdrop)

when using airdrop to send from mac book air (11 inch mid 2011) to a mac book pro (13 inch mid 2011) the wifi airdrop transfers seem very slow. a 5 gig file took 30 minutes to airdrop. when i was at my brothers house and i sent 11 gigs to his imac (unsure which model maybe 2009 <- before thunderbolt) it took 3 hours.
i thought maybe this was airdrops fault, so i connected this mac book air to my mac mini (mid 2010) using airdrop, it also took 30 minutes for 5 gigs.
so i made a manual WEP adhoc connection on channel 48, it also took 30 minutes for 5 gigs. i then tried copying files from another laptop (a dell)
and the 5 gig file copied at the full 300 mbps (or abouts) maybe 5 minutes to the macmini
whats going on here??? is this normal for the mac book air?? do i have a bum wireless card?? i was going to ask a genius to switch out the wifi card or check the antennas but i thought i would post here to see if anyone else has problems
when copying to the mac book pro or the imac i made sure that both computers were connected at 2.4 to different networks, to make sure that 2.4 was
tied up, figuring the simulataneous airdrop connection would prefer 5 ghz. ive seen it sometimes airdrop on the same machines on the same network and taking longer because it was a 802.11g network.

seems like any of the 2 computers on at 2.4 ghz (even on different networks) slows down airdrop. but havingboth computers wifi cards on but not connected to anybody, speeds up airdrop dramatically.
sending from air to mini (air = 5 ghz wifi) mini (2.4 wifi) airdrop speed 12 gigs in 1 hour
sending from air to mini (air = 5 ghz wifi) mini (not connected) air drop speed 12 gigs less then 30 minutes
sending from air to mini (both at 2.4 ghz) 4 hours
sending from air to imac (both at 2.4 ghz on two different networks ) 4 hours
