HT6437 iTunes fails to recognize iPhone

I am attempting to backup/restore my iPhone 4S running iOS 7.1.2, to my new iPhone 6 Plus running iOS8.1.2.
Unfortunately, iTunes 12 fails to recognize my iPhone device. Therefore, it's impossible to Backup or Synch.
Any ideas to correct this? Do I have to update my ancient iPhone 4S to iOS 8.1.2 first? I tried different USB cables, no luck. I tried stop/re-start iTunes.

Hello there, dpharbison.
When transferring content from an older iOS device to a new one using iTunes, the following Knowledge Base article offers the steps on how to accomplish that:
Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device - Apple Support
Use iTunes
If you don't have an iCloud account or you just want to keep a backup on your computer, you can use iTunes to back up and transfer content on your device.
Get ready
Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer and the latest version of iOS on your original device.
You can't install a backup of a newer version of iOS onto devices that are using earlier versions of iOS. If your backup came from a device that has a newer version of iOS installed, update your new device before you transfer your data. For help, see Unable to restore from a backup of a newer iOS device.
Back up and transfer
First, back up your old device using iTunes. You can also encrypt the backup so that it remembers the passwords for your email, Wi-Fi, and more when you transfer to the new device. Otherwise, you can re-enter these passwords on the new device.
Then transfer your data from your device to your computer.
Remove your SIM card
If your device has a SIM card, use the SIM-extractor tool or a paper clip to remove the SIM from your old device and insert it into your new device. Or if your carrier gave you a new SIM card, use that instead.
Set up the new device
When the backup of your old device is finished, turn on your new device. Follow the setup assistant, which will ask you to choose these things:
Your language and country
Whether to enable Location Services
A Wi-Fi network
If you don’t have a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection, you can also activate by tapping Connect to iTunes.
Restore the backup
When prompted to set up your device, select Restore from iTunes Backup.
Connect to iTunes
Connect your new device to iTunes, using the same computer you used to back up your current device. iTunes will ask you to restore from backup or set up as new. Select the backup of your old device and choose Continue.
If the progress bar in iTunes pauses for a while, wait until the restore finishes.
Sync other content
When the restore finishes, your device restarts, and then it's ready for you to use.
Keep your device connected to iTunes to sync content that isn't in the backup (such as music, videos, and apps). To change the type of content that syncs, click the syncing tabs in iTunes.
Enter your passwords
If you restored from an unencrypted backup, you'll need to enter the password for your Apple ID, email and other accounts, and voicemail. If you've forgotten your voicemail password, contact your carrier.
If your device continues to not be recognized, these article provide further troubleshooting depending on the operating system your computer is running:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
or
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X - Apple Support
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Pedro.

  • ITunes fails to recognize iPhone

I am trying to activate a new iPhone. I have the latest version of iTunes (verified). I have Windows Vista Ultimate. The computer recognizes the iPhone device as new.
iTunes does not do a thing. There is no sign that the iPhone has been recognized.
    Please help!

I have returned from a trip and will now resume trying to fix my problem. To summarize: (1) I have reinstalled iTunes with no antivirus or firewall programs working; (2) iTunes recognizes my iPod; (3) Vista recognizes the iPhone when it is connected via USB; (4) Vista identifies the new device as an iPhone; (5) iTunes does nothing and does not appear to recognize the iPhone device; (6) This is on a 32bit installation, a desktop, and the USB connection is on the Dell tower, not the keyboard; (7) The iPhone is recognized on another computer, but that computer does not have the files with which I want to synch.
I do NOT have webcam or other devices identified by Jason L, but he identifies a possible driver problem which could possibly be a problem, if I can identify the right conflict.
rotciv360 identifies a missing driver: c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbaapl.sys. I do NOT have that driver file. If it was supposedly loaded with the reload of iTunes, then I do have a problem which has not yet been corrected. Since uninstalling and reloading hasn't fixed iTunes, what should I do next?

  • Itunes fails to recognize my phone and wants me to load as 'new phone' each time I hook up. I have disabled firewalls and it will recognize one out of five times. It also attempts to sync but just runs forever,  then gives error message 0xE8004006

Itunes does not recognize Iphone. It asks me to restore or add as new phone each time I sign on. It then attempts to sync, just runs forever. After five tries, it allowed me to upgrade OS, but still refused to complete a sync. I have disabled firewalls. Error message 0xE8004006

  • After installingwindow 8.1 preview, itune does not recognize iphone

After IO update and and installing window 8.1 preview, Itune does not recognize iphone.
I went to devise manager and it tells me everything is working properly, but can not read the iphone on itune.
    Please help with this problem
    Thanks
    TOM

You shouldn't be running the "preview" anymore. Microsoft released the full 8.1 update last Friday (10/18).
The "preview" is a beta and should NOT be relied on for any further use. Microsoft explained this in their "preview" downloads.

  • Itunes doesn't recognize iphone after last update

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
last week i updated last version of itunes, after that itunes won't recognize iphone, doesnt charge, i dont see iphone connected, cant transfer or delete music.....this is a pain in the a**.... i love this phone but this is my second one and i keep having problems....i have more problems with it but this is the urgent one one....can anybody help me please?????????????? oh, and i have windows (does it make any difference?)

    Hello again, GiannisFromAthens.
At this point, considering that the primary issue is with getting the Windows update resolved, we need to get that taken care of first. To do so you may need to consult Microsoft, or whoever supports the installation of Windows on your computer, for more troubleshooting to resolve it.
Once that is resolved, if you are still experiencing the issue, you may find better information by using another of Apple's Support resources at https://expresslane.apple.com/GetProductGroupList.action for a more hands on response.
    Cheers,
    Pedro D.

  • Update failed. Now iTunes won't recognize iPhone.

I connected my iPhone 4s to my computer, and iTunes prompted me to update my iphone. I initiated the update and awhile later the update failed and now my phone only shows a picture of the phone's cable with an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo. Whenever I plug it in, iTunes does not recognize it. I have gone throught the basic fixes suggested, but the issue remains. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, I have restarted Apple Mobile Support, I have reinstalled the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. I don't know what else to do.
    I am using Windows 7.

I really wasn't sure what on my computer was causing the problem, but I just used another computer whose iTunes recognized my phone, was able to restore it to factory settings, and then my computer's iTunes recognized it once it was no longer in recovery mode, and I was able to return my iphone to normal with a previous backup.
    Thanks for trying to help.

  • Failure to backup while updating 3GS to iOS5 - now iTunes doesn't recognize iPhone!

Hi, I'm trying to update my 3GS to iOS5. Working on a brand-new Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.2. Made sure I had the newest iTunes (10.5), synced my phone, transferre purchases to the computer, backed up manually for good measure. Downloaded the iOS5 update with no problem, and started the update process. Seemed to be going slowly but surely through the "backup" step of the update process. I left for five or ten minutes, and came back to a possible disaster:
    - computer had gone to sleep (guess I could have changed preferences, but I assumed that the update-in-progress would keep the computer awake)
    - iPhone screen shows the "plug USB into iTunes" graphic
    - when I woke up the computer, it showed an error message - upgrade failed. I'm pasting the text from the iPhone Updater Log below... it ends with "Restore Error 2009."
    - iPhone no longer shows up as a device in iTunes (or iPhoto). Tried closing and opening iTunes, disconnecting and reconnecting iPhone from USB port, and moving to second USB port. None of these worked. iPhone screen continues to display the "connect USB to iTunes" graphic. I found some relevant lines in the "all messages" log - pasting those below too.)
Anything I can do, short of bring both computer and phone to the Apple Store? (The phone is past warranty but I have AppleCare for the new computer)
Does the failure to back up mean that there is no previous backup I can get to? Any way to check if there's a working backup on the computer without it recognizing the iPhone?
All my apps, contacts, calendar items, music and photos are on my computer, so at least it seems that my data is not all lost. But the phone-to-computer connection doesn't seem to be coming back. Wonder if restarting computer could get it to recognize iPhone, but afraid of doing any more damage.
    Any help appreciated! Thanks,
    Adam

  • ITunes won't recognize iphone apps

I went to update some apps through iTunes (USB) with OS-X 10.9.5 to iPhone 5s with IOS 8 and it sees the apps but won't let me make changes to them. I can't remove, install or move apps. I've rebooted the Mac and the iPhone and nothing helps. The Console window is full of iTunes mesages about "Failed to create replacement string" which I doubt means much with the iPhone. Any suggestions to get iTunes to recognize the apps to make changes?

I take it back. The problem persists. I've used the same setup as the iPad Air also on IOS 8 and it works fine, but not the iPhone. There is a problem in IOS on the iPhone with iTunes or with iTunes connecting to the iPhone.

  • Itunes won't recognize iphone 3gs after upgrade to IOS 5

Backup for Iphone on itunes was made on DELL INSPIRON MINI 10 laptop running XP Professional, Thursday evening 10-13-2011.
Upgraded Itunes to new system (ios 5) Friday evening 10-14-2011.
Connected Iphone to laptop Saturday afternoon to sync and upgrade phone to ios 5. after 2 hours phone was wiped clear, and itunes dropped recognition icon from list. several attempts were made to re-sync. all failed, itunes would not recognize. ended up restarting phone and installing upgrade on another computer. Laptop still failed to recognize.
attempted upgrade to Ipod and it locked up on "Disconnect before removing'. opened Itunes dropdown and selected 'Diagose devise' and was able to restore ipod and sync with itunes. afraid to attempt 'diagnose' with iphone, now that it is working.
back-up for iphone still appears on itunes,,,, just can't back it up...XP is unable to 'ICloud' and my DELL Window Vista Home Premium won't install updates so ICloud won't load....

Help please - my computer does not recognize iPhone after upgrading to IOS4 and iTunes 9.2 ---- I have WIndows 7 --- have tried EVERYTHING and still it does not work. I want to do my albums via the computer, not iTunes since it adds the Photo Library folder, which is a duplicate of all my picture folders.
Does anyone have a real solution please? I have uninstalled, installed, deleted drivers, installed drivers - the computer says the drivers are working, but obviously not.
When is Apple going to post the solution so that people will know what to do - seems everyone has an idea, but none are working for me and the extra photo folder frankly drivers me crazy ---- something about iPod cache ----- do not want duplicate pictures.
And, will albums be able to be edited - can these pics not be sent to Facebook.
I know, several topics ----- what a mess Apple has created with IOS4 and iTunes 9.2. Ready to send the phone back!

  • ITunes won't recognize iPhone 5 after I attempted to download iOS 7

I tried to download iOS 7 and I got an error message and iTunes said the update failed. Since that moment, my phone has shown the iTunes logo with the cable, prompting me to plug my phone into my computer and sync it with iTunes. Conveniently enough however, iTunes won't recognize my iPhone when I plug it in, but it will recognize my iPod touch when I plug that in to the computer. I have restarted my computer, reinstalled iTunes numerous times and yet nothing has worked. So essentially I have no ability to restore my phone and no ability access it in any way shape or form.....any help?!

What version of iTunes are you running?

  • ITunes will not recognize iPhone 3gs, but the phone charges. I've tried everything!

    Hi
    I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes.
I've tried a different USB port.
I've turned the phone off and on.
    I've restarted the computer.
    I've restarted the AMDS.
I have all the latest updates.
I'm using an iPhone 3GS on a Windows 7 laptop.
I have no other problems with the phone, and I did nothing to make it unrecognizable.
My computer recognizes it as a device, but iTunes doesn't.
iTunes does however recognize my iPod.
    Please help me!!!

Does you have tried everything include verifying the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed, checking for 3rd party mobile phone software installed on your computer, and troubleshooting 3rd party security software?

  • Itunes doesn't recognize iphone sim card after installing io5

I sent hours trying to upgrade my Iphone 3gs to io5 and now Itunes doesn't recognize the phone sim card, I only have a message saying 'There is no sim card in the Iphone you are trying to activate'.   Iphone is no longer under warranty, so I don't know what to do if doesn't work any more.
Any advice very welcome Thank you!

Same problem with my 3GS :
Impossible to activate IOS 5 because itunes say "sorry there is no sim inside"...
I tried everything and the problem is found on many forum. many people can not activate their iPhone after installing the update.

  • ITunes dosen't recognize iPhone?

I have no idea why it stopped recognizing it...
It still charges and iPhoto still recognizes it...
    Tried un(re)installing iTunes.
    Tried switching USB ports.
    Tried turning computer off
    Tried restoring iPhone..
Nothing works, I know the USB port is not broken because other devices work fine.

    Tried restoring iPhone..
How did you restore the phone if iTunes can't recognize it? Try holding the Home button down when plugging it in and see if you can enter recovery mode. Then restore.

    Hy there,
In order for you to solve this problem you have to follow these stept if your running windows:
1'st step is to go into the device manager
2 step is to go to portable devices (it is rught under network adapters)
3 step is to right clic apple iphone and click update drivers
4 step is to brows your drivers from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that your itunes will pump up alown and youl see your iphone right there.
