HT6472 Alex Not as Good as Enhanced Quality

To me, Alex doesn't sound as good as the enhanced quality voice on iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0.2. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not aware of any hearing loss on my part which was the first thing I thought of.

You're not giving us anywhere near enough information on what you are doing. I still can't answer your question based on what you have told us.
It sounds like you are new to the whole process. You ought to read up on colour management, colour spaces, calibration and display/printer profiling, etc.
Step one is calibrating and profiling your computer display. Without this, you have no idea that what you are seeing is accurate, in terms of brightness, contrast, and colour balance. You'll be processing your images to compensate for any inaccuracies. e.g. if your screen is too bright and slightly magenta, your images will end up too dark and slightly green. You may then find that this can be improved by adjusting the print settings, but this is just a workaround, and not a sensible course of action.
I wrote an overview on the subject, which contains a link to an overview of colour management:
http://yphotography.co.uk/articles/calibrating-your-workflow/
it doesn't go into any detail. For that, you'd need to Google "Photoshop color management workflow" or something similar, and spend a while digesting the subject.
By the way, this is the Camera Raw forum, and printing isn't really relevant here. You still haven't told us which application you are trying to print from, so I am assuming it's Photoshop, nor have you told us what settings you are using, both in the application and the printer setting dialog. But I think your best course of action would be to read up on the subject before going any further.

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

  • Why is playback video quality not as good as the source?

Hi.  I'm not new to PrE but am new to the forum.
I've been using PrE 2 for about 7 years.  I got a newer computer running Windows 7 and basically was forced to upgrade to PrE 12 because PrE 2 didn't run very well on the newer machine. Once I installed PrE 12, I was eager to jump into my first project on this machine.
I expected that with a newer machine and the latest software, I would get outstanding results--hopefully much better than what I always got with PrE 2 on the old machine.  With PrE 2, it was not uncommon that the imported video seemed lossy on playback or for whatever other reason seemed not as good as the source video.
Unfortunately, the results on the new/new were no better than the old/old.  So I switched to my wife's (even newer) machine running Windows 8 and got the same results.  Then I thought that perhaps the output to DVD would be better than what I saw in the PrE editor.  No dice.
The video quality of the source isn't the greatest (see below), but I expected that the PrE 12 would be no worse.
    What went wrong?
Here's what i'm working with on the current project:
    Machine 1:
    HP EliteBook 8560w
Intel Core i7-2640M 2.8 GHz CPU
    Window 7 Enterprise SP1
    2 GB RAM
    360 GB available HD space
    Machine 2:
    Dell Inspiron 3521
Intel Pentium 2117U 1.8 GHz CPU
    Windows 8 Touchscreen
    4 GB RAM
    400+ GB available HD space
    Video Source:
    iPhone 4 video (MOV format)
Thanks for ANY help you can give me.
BTW, I noticed that Steve Grisetti is one of the frequent commenters on this forum.  In case you're reading this, Steve, I want to thank you and Chuck E. for your PrE books.  I purchased one several years ago and found it extremely helpful.  And surprisingly, I found that with PrE 12 I could still use the book that I purchased before because most of it was still relevant to the new software.  Still a great purchase!!

Please excuse if I mention things you may already be aware of, but I did not want to take anything for granted.
The installed RAM on Machine 1 is too low for HD work, and I wonder about the processor on Machine 2 even though it has more installed RAM than that on Machine 1. For now, I will bypass the usual drills and get to the source media and project settings.
    1. From what I can put together, your source media from iPhone 4 are 720p up to 30 frames per second. That usually translates into a variable frame rate which can be problematic for Premiere Elements. The variable can lead to audio out of sync, but not necessarily. If all else fails, then it is onto HandBrake or the like to change the variable into a constant frame rate.
    2. One of the features of version 11 and 12 is the program taking over the setting of the project setting based on the properties of the first video drag to the Timeline. Some times it does it OK, sometimes not. When not, then you set the project preset manually yourself based on what you know to be the properties of your source media. Please refer to the following which includes how to set the project preset manually.
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/04/pe11-accuracy-of-automatic-project.html
Based on what I have read about the properties of the iPhone 4 video, I would suggest the project preset (assuming a NTSC set up)
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    AVCHD-LITE 720p30
One of the important things to remember is that Premiere Elements 11 and 12 have as their default project preset
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    Full HD1080i30
and not the NTSC DV Standard of versions earlier than 11.
When 11 and 12 do not get the automatic project preset correct, they do not give you the closest fit, rather they give you their
default NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 which is not going to be appropriate for 720p video.
Classically it is written if you have the correct project preset you should have no colored line over the content when you bring the video to
the Timeline manually set. But, just the variable frame rate can trigger the unrendered indicator (orange instead of red in versions 11 and 12).
So, rendering the Timeline would be indicated to get the best possible preview under these circumstances.
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on either of your computers?
    More later.

  • Icons not in good picture quality

I'm trying to set high resolution images (800x600) as icons for some of my folders. however, when i zoom in the icon size they are not in good quality and the finesse is not there as in the original picture. this didn't use to be the case before in leopard. i'm using copy-paste to set them as icon in the 'get-info' window.
    any suggestions?
    Neerav

The maximum resolution for icons in OS X is 512x512. For Windows 7, it's 256x256, and in WinXP it's 128x128. All three require icons to have a 1:1 aspect ratio.
OS X and Windows 7 will automatically down-sample higher-resolution icons, and, if not 1:1, pad them.

That's just nonsense that politicians and other ignorant people say. Just ignore it. The market has spoken loud and clear on this one. The more interesting question is if the USA could ever approach the efficiency of China. Again, obviously that is possible, but not with the current socio/policial/economic environment.
Also as a Software Developer in INDIA, How much safe to choose UNIX Environment for development.....
Interms of C and C++ or Objective C....
That is a much more interesting question. For the past decade, it has been fashionable to treat software development as a commodity. All software developers are equal, we can just hire them in India where they work for less. In theory, that is true. In practice, all they look at is price. They don't pay the slightest attention to the actual developers, either in the USA or India. All they want is cheap, cheap, cheap. Because they don't care, they don't bother to check qualifications or to make good architecture choices. All they do is Windows and all they hire are people with the most buzzwords on their resumes.
If you want to be in that market, then you need to invent a resume with 15 years of iOS experience. Just study the latest, hippest acronyms and give yourself experience for twice as long as said technology has existed. The people doing the hiring won't know any difference.
If you actually want to be a real programmer, then your approach in India is no different than it would be in the US. Learn the fundamentals. Learn the environment that you actually enjoy working in. This is a more difficult path but it is the only one that will actually take you where you want to go.

  • Sound quality not as good as older iMac

At work I have a 2.4GHz Intel Duo Core 24" iMac. The sound is awesome. It gets quite loud and the bass is deep. My new LED display sounds like a tin can. It has such high treble and no bass even though this is a 2.1 system. I can tweak it using the equalizer in iTunes but when I am on the web, I am stuck with this poor sound quality. Could there be something wrong with the speakers or is did Apple make them worse?

    You are right actually....
there was one review somewhere (maybe engadget or ars technica?) that stated the sound was NOT as good as the iMac speakers.
I was looking for some kind of mod to upgrade the internal speakers , but have not found it !

  • Touch in iPhone 5 is not as good as iPhone 4's

The touch in iPhone 5 is not as good as the iPhone 4's. I have used iPhone 4 for almost 2 years, and now i have started using iPhone 5. When i type, i am hitting the wrong alphabets or digits quite often. This was never an issue while i was using iPhone 4. So i was wondering if it has something to do with the quality of screen that is being used for iPhone 5.
When i hit the password for say Appstore, almost always it says that i have put the wrong password (implies that i have hit the wrong keys). Then i need to carefully touch the alphabets one by one, and only then it accepts the password. This does not happen even once when i am entering the password for my iPhone 4 (no matter how fast i hit the keys).
I strongly believe the quality of touch which was the USP of iPhone has gone down. IS it because of the vendor for the screens ???
I feel as if am using some Android phone because of the poor quality of touch.
Is anyone else experiencing the same issue in iPhone 5?

Absolutely...... But people with large fingers like mine would struggle to type in this new layout of the keyboard.. The keyboard layout till iPhone 4S was just about perfect...
In iPhone 5 when i touch a button, the buttons around the one i intend to click, get clicked more often...
I am just not able to adjust to this new keyboard.......
Guess i will have to trade in my iPhone 5 for my wife's iPhone 4..
She will be more than delighted...

  • HD (letterbox) will not appear on DVD when Quality is set to 16:9 or 4:3

Been around the block on this so far, not real solutions and it was suggested to post here.
The footage is all ingested as  CineForm codec, exported out as separate songs to MPEG2,  then built in Encore, buttons etc. Minimal tweaks.
MPEG2 because Dynamic Link craps out and chooses one camera over actual multicamera edits, drops titles, effects etc. depending on which song it wants to burp up on.
The DVD defaults are grayed out, and a tag on the bottom of the box indicates that the specs can be changed at any time using Projects settings, which gets the same grayed out choices as defaults, useless it would seem.
Switching to Quality setting, there are options for DVD including 4:3 or 16:9 and so far neither, and or none of the DVD Quality settings, custom or otherwise will allow the DVD to burn anything that has the "black" lines above and below with the letterbox look on the SD DVD when played in a standard machine.
On the computer, everything looks fine with WMP or VLC but take the DVD to an older Toshiba TV with a player built in and the safe areas from Premiere are all that appear.
Challenge is why, how can this be affected pre build and, should one simply ingest and edit with something other than HD 1080, so Encore doesn't step on the final image?
Too late, the product hits on Monday but round two is in January.
So far, one suggestion in this forum is to export the HD MPEGs to Nero etc. and burn in that software.
Is Encore shy of this concept, or is CS5.2 too old to negotiate the terrain, or is it pilot error?
    All comments are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi Stan and Ann,
Usually when something is amiss, in my case it's pilot error.
What Stan offered (which settings in AME?) looks to be the culprit.
I had a friend, a DP over before this project was exported and he said to transcode using MPEG2.
Another posted response via an Adobe thread or Creative Cow (not sure) also implied exporting as MPEG2 when I was getting poor results from Dynamic Link as explained above.
This morning as I checked the kind responses from you both, I opened Premiere, took the suspect file which fails in DL, opened export and checked the settings.
I was so rigid in following the advice as "MPEG2” that I never looked at the rest of the menu choices.
As follows when MPEG2 is hovered: "Recommended for High Quality HD playback locally on a computer for HDTV 24 1080p source file or sequence"
This explains why the concert plays fine in VLC etc.
When MPEG2-DVD is hovered: "High Quality Output with TV Standard, Frame Rate, Field Order, PAR set automatically based on source."
The timelines are all exported as MPEG2, not as MPEG2-DVD which may explain why the 16:9 image is truncated on a DVD player.
I will head to Frys and buy more DVDs for a test burn, but, this seems to be what may be the issue at this point.
In explaining perhaps I've confused you both but what happens when the MPG2 is played on a DVD machine, the image defaults to (generally) what are considered the safe areas grid in Premiere which I edit with turned on to be sure titles stayed in the DVD viewable area.
I think then perhaps the mystery is solved.
Two more questions then, if you feel inclined.
    1) Since we are on the subject, the drop down menu offers several choices when using MPEG2-DVD: Match source attributes, in High, Draft and Highest quality, NTSC 23.97 Widescreen High Quality, NTSC Progressive High, NTSC Progressive High Widescreen and Progressive Widescreen High.
    2) For a duplication house (as software authoring is not as good as hardware) what format is best for delivery to them with the choices being DVD drop down:  Disk, Folder, Image, Master or DDP image?
Given my missteps so far, are there settings either of you suggest that work best here for the footage based upon your collective experience?
Many thanks to you both for helping me gnaw off my paw from the trap I stepped into.
I'll let the label know once I burn a new DVD.
    Rob

All iPhones are manufactured in the same factory in China, all are the same quality for every country of sale.
But the LTE/4G bands are different for different countries so may not work back in Germany.  In addition, the warranty is only valid in the country of sale, so you will not have warranty support in Germany...unless Macedonia is part of the EU and then the warranty is valid for all EU states.

  • Intel-Duo 20" iMac/Intel Chip Not As Good as Motorolla/Memory/System Delays

I admit - I am a World of Warcraft type guy. If I boot up the system - and just chose WoW - all is good. If I start Safari, it hangs for a bit - then loads. If I am running WoW - and Safari is up, WoW gets choppy. If I close Safari - and I have been playing a while, WoW remains choppy.
It seems to me that memory management of the iMac is not very good. Either ram is not flushing or there is a conflict between Safari and other programs. I have not put it through lots of tests- but I notice a major difference.
My old G4 portable - 17" PowerBook, actually handles this so much better. Am I the only one to notice a quality difference between Intel and Motorolla?
    Thanks.

There's no difference in memory management based on hardware. Memory management is a function of the operating system and would be the same regardless of which platform is running OS X.
The problem you describe may more likely be related to the GPU and amount of VRAM and installed RAM as well as the screen resolution and bit depth.
Inasmuch as you did not provide the hardware configurations of both machines it's pretty difficult to identify any differences. Safari should not "hang" during startup which may suggest your system needs repair.

  • Large Export Not As Good With 8.0.1? Plus...

So I've exported my 1st video since the update - Large 540. I've exported several times in fact, after quitting and relaunching too. I can immediately see the quality is simply not as good as before. For all intents and purposes, the 540 exports looked almost the same as the 540 imports. Not any more.
Plus every time I export now, the video level adjustments are not being carried over into the export. Has anyone else noticed either of these issues? I'm guessing no since I can't seem to find a thread on this.
    Thanks, guys.

Hey Chris, thanks for responding, in my above post I mentioned my troubleshooting:
Since updating my iPhone 5S (T-Mobile) to both 8.0.1 and then 8.0.2 I've had more issues than I've ever had with any iOS in the past (with the exception of iPhone 4 running iOS 7, but clearly that is an older phone, not a 1 year old model like the 5S). Have tried resetting, powering off, etc too by the way.

  • My Ipod nano 4th gen DOES NOT sound good.... why? HELP

My new iPod nano 4 GB does not sound good. I have tried everything: reset it, record new differentd CD's, changed the earphones and nothing works. Music sounds with very bad quality. Is it configuration problem?, is it itunes problem?, is it a manufacturing problem?. What can I do?
    I appreciate you help

It takes around 2 weeks to get a replacement, a bit less if it is not personalised. Apparently a lot of the ipods coming out of China have audio/visual problems at the moment. Guess they should work on their quality control process.

  • My review of X1 Carbon - Not very good...

Well, I just got my X1 Carbon yesterday.  So far, not so good.
I have i7 with 8GB of RAM, 256 SSD and WWAN.  Pretty much maxed out on the upgrades.
    1. The computer is litterally crooked.  When I place it on a hard flat surface (my kitchen counter), it doesn't lay flat.  There is about 1 mm gap below the front right rubber foot and the counter.  So every time I touch the trackpad, I get a click from the laptop tapping on the counter. Lovely.  This is annoying as hell.  Poor workmanship by Lenovo.
    2. USB 3.0 Dock is an absolute joke.  I am using the Targus ACP71USZ.  They are all the same, regardless of which model you buy, since they all use Displaylink technology.  On the m,onitors connected to the dock, the mouse responds with tiny delays, so it is very annoying and difficult to accurately point the mouse. Its bad with both HDMI and DVI.  HDMI is worse.  Ethernet, is pathetic.  I don't even get a 1mb download speed at speedtest.net.  Other computers on the same copnnection get over 20mb.  Ping was 800ms vs 5ms for other computers.  Absolutely pathetic.  Wifi gave me 7mb with 100ms ping.  Then I tried connecting the ethernet cable to the dongle that comes with the X1, directly to the X1, and not the dock.  I got 18mb and 5ms ping.  Much better, but this adds to the fact that the dock is a $200 peice of garbage. The only good way to use an external monitor is via the mini displayport on the X1 itself.  So basically here is my setup.  I have 2 external monitors.  One goes to the DVI on the dock.  Other to displayport on the X1.  Ethernet dongle on the USB of the X1, power cable on the X1, USB to connect the X1 to the dock.  I have to plug in 4 cables to the X1 just to dock it.  Kind of defeats the purpose of the dock, and its worse since the dock works like crap anyway.
If I were to just use the X1 as a laptop, then it would be fine.  But this machine absolutely stinks when used with a dock.
I am alrerady considering putting it on ebay.

As for the T430s and the Series 3 dock I have, keep in mind it's the 135W dock I bought when I received the ThinkPad W510 for work.  The problem I see with my dock and the T430s is that the T430s doesn't remember the configuration and state.  So when I dock the notebook and boot it, it doesn't always display on the attached monitors.  Or it changes which monitor is the primary.  Or it displays only on one monitor at 800x600 resolution.
In short, it is unpredictable and very frustrating.
I have seen enough reports from other ThinkPad Optimus based models in this generation to know it isn't just me.  There seems to be some issues with the chipset, drivers, and hardware integration.
There were no such issues with the T420 or T420s.
It is sad to see products take a step backward.  You always think and expect continual improvement from generation to generation but it simply isn't true.  You roll the dice each time.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    Then GULP, check for this...
Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.
