HT6531 Anyone else getting kernel panics after Security update 2014-005?
I have a user with a brand new MBP, running 10.9.5 who installed Security Update 2014-005 on Friday morning. Ever since then, the machine has been crashing with kernel panics. We've done the usual Disk Util, etc. and it keeps happening. It would be terribly disruptive to have to rebuild the entire machine.
The links to Apple Support articles sometimes won't load in Safari.

Kernel Panic After Security Update Reboot
My nearly new 24" iMac had a kernel attack after a Apple software multi-update, including a security item, ...rebooting into Darwin.
I've run Disc Utility from the install disc and verified and repaired permissions, rebooted in safe mode, back to Darwin and ran 6 repetitions of fsck -f, all reporting goodness, all rebooting to back to Darwin.
When I log into Darwin, and then command "exit", I pop into a blue screen, then back to Darwin and see -2 crashdump[327] :crash report written to :/ Library/Logs/CrashReporter/SecurityAgent.crash.log . If I command "reboot" it starts out looking normal as the OS is loading, shifts to a blue screen with loading icon, and back into Darwin.
Darwin then posts a new log in again. So neither Disc Utility nor Darwin is detecting anything problematic, no 3rd party peripherals, no hardware issues, and I'm trying to avoid an archive and install due to the 40gb of 3rd party graphics software unlikely to survive the process.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes I've referenced the Xlab website which is helpful but has not as yet yielded a fix. It's a bit overwhelming with the number of possible suspects, the potential software conflicts are numerous. The panic coming on the heels of the security download is the only smoking gun that I presently have.
It's a slow go trying to identify potential conflicts when both primary diagnostic tools are indicating that everything's just fine.
The PRAM reset was one of the first things I tried, it did somewhat vary the boot sequence, but landed in the same place.
At this point I've little hope of avoiding a reinstall.

After Security update 2011-005 I my second monitor is black.
Hi Folks,
After security update 2011-005, I colud not get my second display working. I tried safe boot, didn't help, tried different resolutions didn't help. Reboot did not help either.
The second display is detected but it is black.
I am currently on MacOs10.6.8 running on my MacBook Pro.
Peace.Don't remove any screws to do an SMC reset:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC. -
Gray spot since Security Update 2014-005 1.0 ?
Hello, yesterday I installed “Security Update 2014-005 1.0” on a Mid 2010 27’’ iMac running Mavericks 10.9.5 and a small gray spot appeared at the upper left corner of the screen, above the Apple logo. I know that dust enters sometimes to the screen but this is something different. It looks as if the pixels of that area were darkened (but not completely turned off). The spot remains the same size when applying the zoom or changing screen resolution. On white backgrounds it almost disappears. It is not reflected on screen captures.
Later on, I upgraded the system to Yosemite but the spot remained.
It’s about half a centimeter so maybe it’s just a coincidence that I noticed it exactly after installing the security update.
Anyone experiencing something similar?I discovered another problem: Image retention.
The picture is from the menu bar area, it reads “Safari Archivo Edición” (“Safari File Edit” in english). The other spots are just dust from my camera lens.
Image retention only appears around that upper left corner area of the screen. I’m doing tests to see how permanent the retention is. It could be that the screen is physically damaged, but maybe it’s just a software bug since I noticed the gray dark spot only after installing the software updates. -

Security Update 2014-005 1.0 is trying to install a second time
Security Update 2014-005 1.0 has already been installed and is part of the "Updates Installed in the Last 30 Days" Above that there is "1 Update Available" but it is the same one I have already installed. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to it at first and tried to finish installing it by hitting the RESTART button..... the iMac tried to restart but stayed doing the spinning circle of death.... I waited for 30mins and nothing happened. I ended up unplugging the power a restarted the iMac and it appears to be running fine. However, 1 available update remains and continues prompting to install. How can I clear this update???
Then the problem is on your computer or you are running Yosemite. If it's the former then start with:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. -

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Kernel Panic after Leopard update on Powerbook G4
I've updated my 15" Powerbook G4 to Leopard. Initially everything seemed ok (for about half an hour), but then I started to get Kernel Panics everytime my machine went to sleep.
It also sometimes didn't start up - I heard the start-up sound, but the screen stayed dark. After resetting the PRAM it would work again. I replaced the RAM, but the problem persisted.
I then thought it may be a hard disk problem, because when I booted from an external 10.5 or 10.4 disk, the problem was gone and my computer went to sleep without any problems.
So I ended up buying a new hard disk for my Powerbook, installed Leopard, and it indeed looked as if the problem was solved - for half a day. Because it re-occured after leaving my machine on overnight to allow spotlight to index the HD. The next morning, it wouldn't wake up from sleep mode (the white indicator light at the front also wasn't on), I restarted and the problem came back. Everytime my machine tries to go to sleep, or I put it to sleep, I get a kernel panic.
Any thoughts what this may be? I'd hate to have to go back to 10.4, but I also fear that it may be a hardware problem. Strange though that a replacement HD would fix it for a little while (or booting from an external HD).Hi Barry
Thank you for your help. You may give me too much credit for my hardware knowledge, though. I can replace RAM, but that's about it. Everything else is done by my hardware genius friend at work.
Nevertheless, I have now noticed that the problem seems to be specific for only one of my user accounts. Not surprisingly, the one I use most. None of my other accounts, including the admin account, are not affected. Wouldn't this argue against a hardware problem? Unless someone has a better idea, I may just have to delete this account and see if this will do the trick. Is there any way to painlessly migrate all the meat (keychain etc.) into a new account?
Thanks a bunch for any help.

HT6207 Macbook Pro getting stuck after security update 2014-002
After installing this security update, my mac is acting up, sometimes I am getting a split screen on safari sometimes and then the sometimes computer is hanging up and also when I am using non apple softwares like vlc player or yahoo messenger the mac hangs up? Is it normal?
The VPN connection to this specific servcie provider has worked for me with previous MacOS and with 10.9. It now fails and the only change to my Macs are that I loaded the Security Update 2014-002 in the of April. I checked by adding the exactly same VPN connection definition to a 10.6 Mac and connected from the same LAN. This succeeded. Thus I suspect the Security Update, or that there is some paramater that now needs to be defined/changed.

Slow Sleep Wake-Up after Security Update 2014-002 MacBook Air
Hello! I have a 2013 August MacBook Air. I experienced the "screen goes black, hard restart" issue for many months until one of the updates cured that issues, thank goodness. I just updated with Security Update 2014-002 and just noticed it took about 20 seconds for my MacBook Air to wake-up from sleep mode. I was fearful it was back to the "black screen, no wake-up" issue with this update, however when it finally came back up I was relieved albeit very cautious now. Anyone else have this same issue?
Hello macforme
If you are having issues with waking from sleep and slow startup times, then check out the article below. The main thing to try is to reset the SMC and NVRAM as a starting point sort the issue out.

Restarting taking forever after Security Update 2014-002
I just downloaded Security Update 2014-002 and my Mac Mini is taking forever to restart after the download and installation process finished. I'm running the latest version of Mavericks and my Mac is stuck on restart! What should I do?
Need help! Thanks.Tap the space bar on your keyboard once. The dispaly may be sleeping.
The first restart after the update here was longer than usual but I restarted one more time, it was back to normal boot time.
After the restart, open the App Store then select Updates from the menu.

HT6207 Fails to establish VPN connection after Security Update 2014-002
I have successfully used a VPN service with Mac OS 10.7, 10,8 and 10.9. After an update with Security Update 2014-002 connection requests are directy rejected by the MacOS. When looking into the VPN-log, the same set of 4 messages is logged after each attempt:
publish_entry SCDSet() failed: Success!
publish_entry SCDSet() failed: Success!
Fatal signal 13
can't talk to PPPController : Broken pipe
Is there a known remedy?
/andersblThe VPN connection to this specific servcie provider has worked for me with previous MacOS and with 10.9.

2nd cd/dvd drive not recognized after security update 2014-002
I have a 3rd party CD/DVD drive as my 2nd drive in my Mac Pro and after installing security update 2014-002 it is not recognized by the computer. It does not even show up under "About This Mac" or as a drive in disk utility. Worked fine up until this update. Any ideas?
ThanksI think I have solved my own problem. After 'restarting' the computer several times with no effect I turned the computer off and let it set for 15 minutes, not that I think the time period had anything to do with it, but upon turning the computer back on the 2nd CD worked fine. I'm sure you folks who are wizards in this can explain why turning the computer off did what restarting did not.
