HTC Incredible Privacy Breach

Not really a huge deal but apparently HTC has an issue with storing random snap shots of internet pages you browse, and saves them to your memory card. Now, I myself noticed this also about a month ago while browsing my card from my pc and just manually deleted them. It didn't really concern me till it was labeled a privacy breach due to the user being unaware, and the uselessness of a hard reset to delete these pics. Basically if you ditch your phone and It's reset, those old pics are still accessible. HTC says a full memory format will solve our problems, but they claim to be having a fix soon. My guess is its going to be included when Froyo gets pushed. Something to consider if you think clearing your browser is erasing your tracks. Shoot on over and check out the story. http://tinyurl.com/2co34rc

It would be nice to control that, I would love to take snapshots of the websites I visit or have them recorded at will on the memory card.

  • Verizon, why is HTC Incredible such an awful device?

    Hey Verizon,
I wonder if you actively read/censor these forums because here is my question:
Why do you continue to sell/support awful phones such as the HTC Incredible?
I'm on my 2nd Incredible which is properly updated, yadda yadda yadda. It still suffers from common issues that YOU DENY exist. I'm on my second replacement phone (due to a reboot loop, which although was well documented in various parts of the internet you swear didn't exist) which now exhibits the same issues (only now it's out of warranty, convenient for you, yeah?). Of course, despite a multitude of internet posts, youtube videos showcasing the behavior, etc., you swear it doesn't exist. So my question to you is why do you continue to ally yourselves with such shoddy products/maufacturers?
Certainly you must expect that people will be upset when they purchase a device that doesn't last the terms of your 2-year contract (I'm up in December, and you can bet I'm not continuing)? Certainly you must feel the financial letdown from folks cancelling after their 2-years are up and jumping ship to ATT, T-Mobile, Virgin, or (the really smart) deciding US wireless is a sham? I'm assuming this must hit your bottom line or your shareholders somehow?
I'm sure your average smartphone user doesn't want to remove his/her SD card periodically to prevent (temporarily) reboots, and doesn't want to factory reset their phone to get an OTA update that YOU KNOW is faulty. My phone rarely operates free of issue as a phone, free of issue as a camera, or free of issue as a smartphone. Of course yes, I know those problems that many people are having and have documented on these forums and others don't exist (in your minds at least) but humor me here.
Why do you continue to push devices you know are sub-par and you know won't last? What do you expect to gain?
Personally, I'm free from my 2-year contract (wish I could have had a phone that lasted that long) in about 60 days, which is a huge relief because I've grown tired of paying for 4G LTE service when the majority of the time I'm in 1X (not to mention your illegal data throttling on my Grandfathered "unlimited" account once I've hit the 2GB limit that I never agreed to. Breach of contract anyone?), at which point I'll be dropping your business forever. So, one account soon to be down, how is that business model working for you Verizon?
If you've made it this far (and if this post is miraculously not deleted) I urge you:
Consumer: drop these ******** as soon as you can.
Verizon: get in touch with me, you've got all my info. Lend me a phone that will work (a WORKING phone, one capable of sending/receiving calls without random reboots) until Dec 06th and after that I'll send it back to you along with my last payment and we'll  never have to converse again.
If you're in a similar boat forum members, please chime in.
    Thanks for your time.

My Incredible was lovely. Didn't have a single issue with it. Traded it in for a Moto Razr M and somehow I feel like I ditched an old faithful friend. My first Razr M crapped out and let me down. Had to exchange it for another one.  Sure Verizon's expensive and their data allowances are meager, miniscule and paltry, but I can live with that for now. So everyone's experience is different. Sorry you've had issues with your Droid Inc.

  • HTC Incredible reboot fix that works and does NOT require hard reset

Like many of you unfortunate souls out there I have had my HTC Incredible go into a rebooting loop over the last month or so. The following recounts some observations and and a solution which appears to work.
First off, my son and I both have the same phone and software versions and apps. He does NOT get email on his phone because he does not want to. I do. His phone has NEVER rebooted. Mine has done so numerous times. My business partner also has the identical phone and software version, lives within 200 yards of me,  and uses the email and has had numerous reboots and has gotten them even sooner than I saw them at first. My partner and I have set up email attachments and downloads to go to the SD card. So much for background info. Here is what I did to fix the problem followed by some other observations:
Open up the case of the phone and remove the battery
Remove the SD card from the phone.
Put it into an adapter that allows you to access files directly on your computer. In my case this was a Windows PC running Windows 7.
Mount the SD card in your computer and open up the browser to see the files on the SD card.
Look for a folder called ".Mail"
If your phone is like mine you will see hundreds of files, some of zero length. This was even though I had deleted most of the emails I received on my phone.
Proceed to directly delete any of the zero length files. For that matter, you may have other files like jpg's laying around of uncertain origin. I got rid of these and other strange files that seemed attached to no documents at all.
Remove the SD card and reinsert into your phone. Put the battery back in and the cover on then restart the phone. Your phone should run properly and you should not see any negative consequences from the files you deleted previously.
Some other observations relevant to this solution that bolsters my theory that this problem has something to do with the email application and also a problem with file system corruption on the SD card as a consequence of it.
I had previously seen the email application put some mail from a different account I was using into my main account. The files could not be deleted and even trying to do so would cause the mail app to force close.
My son has never seen the problem despite being in the same environment with the same phone and software. Relevant difference to me was that he was NOT using email and I was.
The email app clearly has bugs if it is leaving behind hundreds of files even if you delete the emails. Why? As a software engineer my first instinct would be to look to see if the file system locks were properly synchronized when the email app is writing to the flash file system. I am not conversant in Android OS programming nor the app code itself so this is speculative on my part. I would also look for a timeout on reboots if file system enumerations take too long. Lots of files on a system might trigger a premature timeout and reboot. Once again, this is speculative on my part but I sure wish I had the code to debug this myself.
These issues seem to coincide with a rapid rise in network traffic most likely because of the iPad 2/iPhone support by Verizon. I wonder if this additional traffic load on the network is opening up timing holes in the software because of backoff and retry intervals for certain apps. Once again I suspect the email app especially because it is vulnerable to network traffic issues as it tries to get email account updates.
I could be wrong about my theory as to why the problem is happening. My solution seems to work. As far as pulling the battery and putting it near your AC in the car, that did NOT work for me at all. Leaving the phone out of its protective case also had no effect. Only screwing with the files on the SD card mattered.
    I hope this helps.

This problem has been seen for MONTHS now by people besides myself. My business partner is about to put a bullet in his phone because this has been happening for far longer than mine. I have little confidence in a fix anytime soon because this problem has been persistent for some time and there is a lot of denial in the field by Verizon. Verizon has to depend on HTC and Google besides themselves for fixes. How much would you like to wager on how this business relationship is working out? The first step in any solution is for a company to take some responsibility for it and so far no company has.

  • I've given up on the HTC Incredible

I thought maybe FROYO would make things better, but it didn't.  The HTC Incredible was a super everything-else-but-a-phone smart phone.  I just couldn't hear some folk who I talked to on the phone; they were usually on another cellphone. Sometimes words got dropped, or the sound quality as too shrill.  All landline calls, and bluetooth earpiece managed calls, were excellent (although reception inside buildings was not terrific).  But since most folks I know used cellphones, I couldn't take it anymore and had to give up.  I used one of the other upgrade plans in my family plan to get a Samsung Fascinate.  Its only has 2.1 but, as a phone, it is great.  I have no regrets dumping the Incredible other than the money that I wasted.  I even had to have the original Incredible I purchased replaced because of memory issues.
My RIM Blackberry Curve was probably the best phone I've ever owned, except that the internet experience was just awful. But as a  phone, nothing was as good...even the Samsung.

I feel the same about my former Blackberry Bold and 8800. Blackberry knows/knew how to build a good solid handset.

  • Bridge CS5 doesn't recognize my HTC Incredible 2 smartphone.

When I configure my HTC Incredible 2 smartphone to connect to my Windows 7 OS as another drive and plug it into a USB port, it recognizes the drive as a camera or card reader but produces the error message: "Failed to obtain thumbnails from the device. The device is not connected or is busy." The Get Photos button is also grayed out. When my smartphone is first connected to the PC it gives me an option to install drivers and asks to insert disk, but I do not recall getting a driver disk with the phone and, when I visit the HTC web site, I have no idea what download might address this particular issue. The bottom line is that without Bridge's recognitioon, its features are unavailable and I can only copy and paste when I want to download photos. Would appreciate suggestions.

Thanks for your suggestions. Changing the JPG file association to Photoshop
and using Adobe Photo Downloader, which Bridge does, made no difference.
Still get the same error message about failing to load the thumbnails which
terminates the download process as far as Bridge is concerned. I also talked
to someone at HTC and it appears to be a third party driver issue; i.e.
There is no driver addressing the issue I raised. I can manipulate the phone
s photo gallery like any other disk, so rather than customizing in the
download process, it will just take another step or two for Bridge to do its
    magic after download. Thanks again.

  • Transfer Footprints from HTC Eris to HTC Incredible 2

I switched from HTC Eris to HTC Incredible 2.  I want to transfer my Footprints thumbnails and data to HTC Incredible 2.  On the HTC Eris there is a folder on the SD card called .footprint that contains the footnotes.db file and folders for thumbnails and voices. The thumbnails for the footprints I have created are in the proper folder.
On the HTC Incredible 2, the footprints folder is on the SDcard as a subfolder of the .data folder.  That folder has a footprints.db file and footprints.db-shm and a footprints.db-shm files in it.  It also has  "thumbnails" and "voices" folderswhere the pictures and dictated audio that are created with the app reside.
I have copied the HTC Eris .footnote folder over to the HTC Incredible 2 SDcard.  The footprints application has a menu item to import pictures and data.  The pictures have to be imported individually.  While the pictures import and retain the address and GPS information, they display the current date and time, not the date and time when the footprint was orginally created.  When you try to import a database, it says no database found.
I tried copying all of the Eris thumbnails into the Incredible 2's thumbnails folder and replacing the footprints.db on the Incredible 2 with the one from the Eris but the app would not display the existing footprint pictures and the app would no longer save and display footprints created even though the pictures taken were in the correct folder.  I restored the Incredible 2's  footprints.db  and solved that problem.
If anyone has ideas, I would be interested to know.  My guess is the Footnotes app on the Eris is a different version so the data is not transferable.

If I had to guess I would say that the issue is because of the different versions of Sense, I have noticed that some of the old files stored from a HTC Sense application doesnt always work on the updated version..

  • R.I.P Desktop Charging Cradle for the HTC Incredible

    Verizon, Is this true???
    http://htcpedia.com/news/htc-incredible-desktop-charging-cradle.html
People want a desktop charging cradle for their phones. Why can one not be produced? A lot of us purchased the phones under the assumption that a dock was being produced. Are you going to allow Incredible owners to exchange their device for Droid X's? You can't get any manufacture to produce a dock that can charge? I really don't think people care THAT much if the home screen doesn't auto rotate. If the clock application is launched it works fine in landscape or you mean a dock that works in portrait isn't possible?????

no doubt!!!! check this one for another device:
    http://www.fommy.com/view-full-page.asp?divid=HTC&cat=Cradles&skuno=80604
how difficult would it really be for them to just place the micro usb plug slightly lower to fit the inc? i love this cradle if the could duplicate it to fit the inc. it can't be that tough to do. and with minor tweaks you could lay it on it's side for landscape. it would be perfect....postrait AND landscape AND it has a slot underneath for an extra battery. the manufaturer would have a gold mine because they'd be the ONLY ones with anything to sell us!!!!

  • HTC Incredible - Won't stop rebooting

My HTC Incredible has been cycling on and off, continuously, for the past 3 hours. I brought it into the store last week and they said the only way to fix it was a hard reset, and that this happens often when you download applications. I didn't want to lose all my photos (haven't figured out how to sync the phone with my Mac), so didn't do the hard reset there.
Now I can't even make a phone call to get support.
    A few questions:
    1. Are there other solutions people have found to get the phone to stop rebooting? I've been taking the battery out but that doesn't seem to help.
    2. Is this the case with all PC phones -- where like PCs, they get viruses all the time -- so should I bite the bullet and buy an iPhone before my contract is up?
Thanks so much for any help you can give!!

    Hi amynyc,
I completely understand your frustration.  I  agree with the store rep and would suggest a Master Reset:
    Touch Settings
    Touch SD & phone storage
    Touch Factory data reset
Tap Reset phone or Reset phone & internal storage
    Tap Erase everything
However, as long as your pictures are stored to your SD card vs. the internal memory of the device, they will not be erased after completing a Master Reset.  Additionally, if you would like to store you pictures to your PC, you will need a Card Reader. I am hopeful this information will resolve your issue.  Please advise if require further assistance.
Thank you for you contribution to our community forums,

  • CANNOT SEE EMAILS WITH EMBEDDED LINKS ON MY HTC INCREDIBLE

I recently linked my Outlook account through a POP3 on my HTC Incredible.  For some reason I'm not able to view messages with embedded links in the body of the email or the senders signature.  For example - If someone sends me an email and they have a FB icon embeded in their signature, I'm unable to view the email.  I can see who it's coming from but cannot see the text in the body of the email.  Does anyone have any work throughs for this issue?  Thanks!

    Hello,
Please try the troubleshooting step provided below:
Touch the Email icon from the Home Screen.
    Touch Mail size limit option.
    Touch No limit.
Another tool that you may find useful, is the HTC Simulator that can be found at the link below:

  • HTC Incredible 4g LTE

Excuse me, but where is the discussion forum for the HTC Droid Incredible 4g LTE?  I upgraded to this phone back in June.  Is there no one buying this phone?  I know there's basically no community development on it, because the ******** at Verizon Wireless re-locked the bootloader, even though they initially allowed it to be unlocked.  What gives?  Does no one care about this phone?
I feel like Verizon Wireless has a severe lemon on their hands with this phone.  Granted, spec-wise, it's not that horrible, but there are definitely issues with this handset.  Where the heck is the community for this phone?  I feel very alone having chosen this phone as my upgrade to the original HTC Incredible...

  • HTC Incredible stuck, Wont boot

I just got my phone literally 5 hours ago, I just got everything set up, contacts added, Etc, I go to plug it into my computer to put some music onto the phone and the phone just shuts off, I go to turn it on and it stays at the "HTC Incredible" screen, And just sits there, So I removed the battery, Soon as I put the battery back in, It jumps right back to that screen and sits there, I cant power down, no nothing, so i tried removing the battery, And putting it back in and hitting Power + Volume down, Tried every option there is.. Nothing, Just goes right back to the "HTC Incred." screen.. Unfortunately, Verizon was closed before I could get there, anyone know a fix, Or am I stuck taking it to the store tomorrow?
When I run the Simlock, It says 255: not key-card!!!

Here are a few options to try. First make sure your phone is disconnected from the computer.
Try to perform a battery pull when you see the "HTC Incredible" screen. If after powering up your device and you still get the "HTC Incredible" screen then try to perform a hard reset.
*Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.
Follow these steps to perform a hard reset:
Press and hold down the Power Key
    Touch Power OFF
    Touch OK
Press and hold the Volume down key then press the Power / End key.
When the HBOOT screen appears, release the keys.
Press the Volume key to select CLEAR STRORAGE then press the Power / End key.
If prompted with Do you want to start update?, press the Volume down key to choose No. When prompted, Do you want to reboot device? press the Volume down key to select No.
This boot process takes several moments, reference the progress bar located in the upper-right. If the device hangs or freezes, remove / replace the battery.
Press the Volume up key to select Yes.
Please let me know if this helps!

  • HTC Incredible powering off...

This is my first post here.  I have a Verizon HTC Incredible.  I've had it for about a year.  I noticed recently that it will power off on it's own.  For instance, I may open the internet and it will power off.  The battery may show it is 50% charged.  Also, I can plug it into my USB charger on the laptop.  I wait until the charging light is green and power it on.  During the time it is powering on, it gets to the point where it is just about finished and then the charging light goes orange and it powers off.  I am not sure what is going on here.  I was going to try to install the battery widget so I can monitor the battery temperature, but I can't get it fully powered on to install the widget.
    Thanks for any guidance..

    tmaxx,
I know how important it is to be able to use your device and still get reasonable battery life and consistent power!  I am here to assist you!
When did you start having these problems with the intermittent power?  Did you notice any changes just after downloading any specific applications or after a software update?  Is your battery/phone getting unusually hot to touch?  Answers to these questions can help me to determine if this is a battery, phone or software issue.
Let me know so I can further assist!

  • HTC Incredible phone locked up

I'm having all kinds of problems with my HTC Incredible phone but I'll be happy if someone could tell me how to restart my phone.  There was a update for Verizon App. icon, so I let it update, now it goes from this red eye picture to HTC quietly brilliant screen, then this screen with random words all over it. When I hold down the power button, nothing happens, wont shut off, wont restart nothing.

The screens you're describing are what I see when I restart: The Quietly Brilliant screen, the Droid eye, then the Droid words all over it ... this is the final screen until it boots up on its own. Are you saying it's not progressing past the Droid words screen? You're not touching the power button then, are you?
Try pulling the battery. Once you put it back in, let it start up on its own and see what happens. It takes a minute or two, so be patient. Post back and let me know what happens.

  • HTC Incredible Dials last number dialed too easily

The only thing I don't like about my HTC Incredible is the design of the phone dialing screen.  Is there a way to change the layout so it isn't so easy to re-dial the last number dialed?  The green phone button is on the bottom of the screen, right next to the "back" arrow, so if I hit the phone button in error, it dials the last number I dialed.  Any ideas?

A replacement dialer application, maybe? There are a couple of them in the Market. I am trying one now, but haven't decided yet if it is a keeper.
