HTC Incredible reboot fix

Here is the fix I have found and resolved the reboot issue the one time I experienced it.
1) Power off the phone.
2) Press and hold the joystick when powering up the phone to bring up the boot menu.
3) Use the volume toggle to highlight "reboot".
4) Press the power button to select "reboot".
5) Once the phone is finished rebooting it should be fine.

@emptyspiralforever He means use the volume rocker on the side of your phone by pressing the minus sign down like lowering the volume. I got the update to work by doing this **BUT** I did the Clear Cache and it put my phone back into factory reset so I had to re-activate the phone after the update went through the update process. Luckily all my contacts, photos, and music was on my SD card so I got my phone back to normal minus a couple apps from the Google Market but no more annoying update messages and the battery life seems a bit better now. Im running 4.08.605.15 710RD. Hope this info helps.

  • HTC Incredible reboot fix that works and does NOT require hard reset

Like many of you unfortunate souls out there I have had my HTC Incredible go into a rebooting loop over the last month or so. The following recounts some observations and and a solution which appears to work.
First off, my son and I both have the same phone and software versions and apps. He does NOT get email on his phone because he does not want to. I do. His phone has NEVER rebooted. Mine has done so numerous times. My business partner also has the identical phone and software version, lives within 200 yards of me,  and uses the email and has had numerous reboots and has gotten them even sooner than I saw them at first. My partner and I have set up email attachments and downloads to go to the SD card. So much for background info. Here is what I did to fix the problem followed by some other observations:
Open up the case of the phone and remove the battery
Remove the SD card from the phone.
Put it into an adapter that allows you to access files directly on your computer. In my case this was a Windows PC running Windows 7.
Mount the SD card in your computer and open up the browser to see the files on the SD card.
Look for a folder called ".Mail"
If your phone is like mine you will see hundreds of files, some of zero length. This was even though I had deleted most of the emails I received on my phone.
Proceed to directly delete any of the zero length files. For that matter, you may have other files like jpg's laying around of uncertain origin. I got rid of these and other strange files that seemed attached to no documents at all.
Remove the SD card and reinsert into your phone. Put the battery back in and the cover on then restart the phone. Your phone should run properly and you should not see any negative consequences from the files you deleted previously.
Some other observations relevant to this solution that bolsters my theory that this problem has something to do with the email application and also a problem with file system corruption on the SD card as a consequence of it.
I had previously seen the email application put some mail from a different account I was using into my main account. The files could not be deleted and even trying to do so would cause the mail app to force close.
My son has never seen the problem despite being in the same environment with the same phone and software. Relevant difference to me was that he was NOT using email and I was.
The email app clearly has bugs if it is leaving behind hundreds of files even if you delete the emails. Why? As a software engineer my first instinct would be to look to see if the file system locks were properly synchronized when the email app is writing to the flash file system. I am not conversant in Android OS programming nor the app code itself so this is speculative on my part. I would also look for a timeout on reboots if file system enumerations take too long. Lots of files on a system might trigger a premature timeout and reboot. Once again, this is speculative on my part but I sure wish I had the code to debug this myself.
These issues seem to coincide with a rapid rise in network traffic most likely because of the iPad 2/iPhone support by Verizon. I wonder if this additional traffic load on the network is opening up timing holes in the software because of backoff and retry intervals for certain apps. Once again I suspect the email app especially because it is vulnerable to network traffic issues as it tries to get email account updates.
I could be wrong about my theory as to why the problem is happening. My solution seems to work. As far as pulling the battery and putting it near your AC in the car, that did NOT work for me at all. Leaving the phone out of its protective case also had no effect. Only screwing with the files on the SD card mattered.
    I hope this helps.

This problem has been seen for MONTHS now by people besides myself. My business partner is about to put a bullet in his phone because this has been happening for far longer than mine. I have little confidence in a fix anytime soon because this problem has been persistent for some time and there is a lot of denial in the field by Verizon. Verizon has to depend on HTC and Google besides themselves for fixes. How much would you like to wager on how this business relationship is working out? The first step in any solution is for a company to take some responsibility for it and so far no company has.

  • HTC Incredible Reboot Problem - Must All Be In My Mind

Took my malfunctioning HTC Incredible to V-Experience Store for return.  It had previously been declared DOA by Verizon Customer Service and identified as part of a bad batch of HTC I's on the market.....
Store Rep tried his hardest to (1) tell me that my malfunction / constant rebooting is all due to the apps I downloaded from the Market (2) the Verizon Customer Service reps don't really know what they are talking about and are too quick to declare a phone DOA (3) there are no bad Incredibles out there - just bad apps and users that don't manage them correctly.
Wow!  Never thought that the 5-8 reboots a day which then locks out my touch screen was ultimately my fault.  Also didn't realize  that the HTC Incredible has no reboot problem that couldn't be solved by resetting it and (based on the Rep's logic), never loading another app on the phone.
A couple of points - Verizon needs to figure out the message regarding the well documented HTC I reboot problem and stay on it.  Second - Every time I step into a Verizon Experience store my opinion of Verizon drops.

I hear you man I am on my FOURTH Incredible.  The onyl positive is that I have not had a reboot in 3 days which is a record for me.

  • Droid Incredible reboot itself now full of errors!!

Hey all,My Droid Incredible rebooted itself  yesterday. Now all apps force close and my bookmarks are all gone. I've tried the hard reset etc and its still doing it !! Has this happened to anyone else? There was an update a couple days ago so im guessing it that update causing all the problems.

    Check this link :http://community.vzw.com/t5/DROID-Incredible-by-HTC/The-not-so-INCREDIBLE-HTC-Incredible-Reboot-Issue/td-p/191740
I have also had continuous reboot problems, removing the battery stops them, but then many of my apps get a force close message.
    *228 did not help.

  • HTC Incredible - Won't stop rebooting

My HTC Incredible has been cycling on and off, continuously, for the past 3 hours. I brought it into the store last week and they said the only way to fix it was a hard reset, and that this happens often when you download applications. I didn't want to lose all my photos (haven't figured out how to sync the phone with my Mac), so didn't do the hard reset there.
Now I can't even make a phone call to get support.
    A few questions:
    1. Are there other solutions people have found to get the phone to stop rebooting? I've been taking the battery out but that doesn't seem to help.
    2. Is this the case with all PC phones -- where like PCs, they get viruses all the time -- so should I bite the bullet and buy an iPhone before my contract is up?
Thanks so much for any help you can give!!

    Hi amynyc,
I completely understand your frustration.  I  agree with the store rep and would suggest a Master Reset:
    Touch Settings
    Touch SD & phone storage
    Touch Factory data reset
Tap Reset phone or Reset phone & internal storage
    Tap Erase everything
However, as long as your pictures are stored to your SD card vs. the internal memory of the device, they will not be erased after completing a Master Reset.  Additionally, if you would like to store you pictures to your PC, you will need a Card Reader. I am hopeful this information will resolve your issue.  Please advise if require further assistance.
Thank you for you contribution to our community forums,

  • HTC Incredible stuck, Wont boot

I just got my phone literally 5 hours ago, I just got everything set up, contacts added, Etc, I go to plug it into my computer to put some music onto the phone and the phone just shuts off, I go to turn it on and it stays at the "HTC Incredible" screen, And just sits there, So I removed the battery, Soon as I put the battery back in, It jumps right back to that screen and sits there, I cant power down, no nothing, so i tried removing the battery, And putting it back in and hitting Power + Volume down, Tried every option there is.. Nothing, Just goes right back to the "HTC Incred." screen.. Unfortunately, Verizon was closed before I could get there, anyone know a fix, Or am I stuck taking it to the store tomorrow?
When I run the Simlock, It says 255: not key-card!!!

Here are a few options to try. First make sure your phone is disconnected from the computer.
Try to perform a battery pull when you see the "HTC Incredible" screen. If after powering up your device and you still get the "HTC Incredible" screen then try to perform a hard reset.
*Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.
Follow these steps to perform a hard reset:
Press and hold down the Power Key
    Touch Power OFF
    Touch OK
Press and hold the Volume down key then press the Power / End key.
When the HBOOT screen appears, release the keys.
Press the Volume key to select CLEAR STRORAGE then press the Power / End key.
If prompted with Do you want to start update?, press the Volume down key to choose No. When prompted, Do you want to reboot device? press the Volume down key to select No.
This boot process takes several moments, reference the progress bar located in the upper-right. If the device hangs or freezes, remove / replace the battery.
Press the Volume up key to select Yes.
Please let me know if this helps!

  • HTC Incredible Network issues?

I have only had issues with my HTC Incredible here and there. The issue is that sometimes I will not receive text messages or phone calls. There's one specific person I am having problems with and they have Sprint. They say that they called me and texted me and I have received nothing. This isn't the first time it has happened.  The day this happened, my phone sounded the notification sound of a message 3x but nothing was there. So I rebooted and it did it again but again, nothing.  Anyone out there know what could be the problem or help me fix it? It is really important that I stay connected to this person. Thanks!!

Thanks for the information Ann154. Your correct, the issue is more than likely with the other persons carrier. Additionally , it could also be a routing issue with your account if you have recently changed mobile numbers or ported your number in to Verizon Wireless from a different carrier.
I would have the other person check with their carrier first then if the issue continues, you can contact us to perform further trouble shooting.

  • HTC Incredible dropping Bluetooth connections with 2012 Honda CRV

I have issues connecting an HTC Incredible 4G to a 2012 Honda CRV. The text message display / read back while in motion feature worked until last night. Now the vehicle displays "updating" and cannot display or read back text messages. The second issue is the phone book display on the Honda only shows some entries and not all that are in the phone. All show in Backup Assistant Plus. I am not happy with this situation and VZW phone tech support is stumped too!
    Edited to start new discussion.

  • HTC Incredible - Screen won't awake.

I've had the HTC Incredible since it first came out and up until yesterday have not had any problems. I don't know what happened, but some how the phone will no longer wake up except by pulling the battery. I can turn the screen off by pushing the on/off button on top, but once the screen is off, I can't turn it back on unless I pull the battery out and turn it on. I'm going to go in the local Verizon store in a bit, but thought I would check in here for any possible solutions as well. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. Took it in on Friday and the service tech couldn't figure out what was wrong. They tried doing a clean swipe, but that didn't fix it so a replacement should be arriving on Monday.

  • HTC INCREDIBLE IS A DEFECTIVE PHONE - DON'T BUY

The HTC Incredible is a defective phone. The sooner HTC or Verizon admits this the better. After having this phone for 18 months I get nothing but daily automatic shutoffs and continous looping. That's what is incredible about this phone. It is not a total piece of junk and that putting it nicely.

Sorry budone but this phone is nothing but junk. You should not have do master resets at all time of the day. I have done that, pull the battery all to no avail. Judging by the amount of post on this topic as well as on the HTC site, there is an obvious problem with this phone that HTC and Verizon refuse to address. No phone should randomly reboot for no reason at all. Whether it be doing a phone call, text, surfing the internet or using the navigator, the phone constantly reboots. What makes things worse for me this is my only phone. If an emergency should arise, I'm out of luck. There is no way that a person should go without phone service for 10-12 hours at a time.
The phone is junk that I wouldn't wish on know one.

  • HTC Incredible 2 or Droid 3???

Hello all. I've just come from being an AT&T customer for abour 4 years and I am finally done. I have an HTC incredible 2 right now and it's great. But I'm not totally sold as of yet. I messed around with the Droid 3 in the store and wanted it, but they didn't have it in the store and said it had to be ordered. Is there anyone here that has owned both and prefer one over the other? This decision is literally keeping me up at night because I want it to be a phone I can stick with until I'm upgrade worthy. Also, I just came from having a Droid Charge. GREAT PHONE, SUCKY BATTERY LIFE and 4G isn't everywhere so it's always looking for a CDMA connection and it drains the crap out of my battery.
    Things that influence my decision:
    Data speeds and reliability
    OS stability and flexibility
Camera quality and sound of videos (I found the sound in my Dinc 2 is horrible)
And most of all....battery drain and reliable remedies for it.
Note, i previously owned an iphone 4 on AT&T. Great phone, but can be a bit strick at times.
    So any input PLEASE.

If you need a keyboard, D3 is a good phone. I don't know anything about the DI2 so I can't compare. That said, the D3 isn't without problems, battery life being one:
    https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/55243?tstart=30
Motorola said they're aware of the problem and we're expecting a fix soon based on a few rumors.
With the D3, I have not noticed data speed better or worse than my OG Droid or DX. The D3 has less problems than I've had without phones but isn't bug free. The biggest problem for me is battery life right now. The camera has a bug where close photos have a blue tint.
Checkout the motorola forums for the D3 and most of these are discussed in detail.

  • Verizon, why is HTC Incredible such an awful device?

    Hey Verizon,
I wonder if you actively read/censor these forums because here is my question:
Why do you continue to sell/support awful phones such as the HTC Incredible?
I'm on my 2nd Incredible which is properly updated, yadda yadda yadda. It still suffers from common issues that YOU DENY exist. I'm on my second replacement phone (due to a reboot loop, which although was well documented in various parts of the internet you swear didn't exist) which now exhibits the same issues (only now it's out of warranty, convenient for you, yeah?). Of course, despite a multitude of internet posts, youtube videos showcasing the behavior, etc., you swear it doesn't exist. So my question to you is why do you continue to ally yourselves with such shoddy products/maufacturers?
Certainly you must expect that people will be upset when they purchase a device that doesn't last the terms of your 2-year contract (I'm up in December, and you can bet I'm not continuing)? Certainly you must feel the financial letdown from folks cancelling after their 2-years are up and jumping ship to ATT, T-Mobile, Virgin, or (the really smart) deciding US wireless is a sham? I'm assuming this must hit your bottom line or your shareholders somehow?
I'm sure your average smartphone user doesn't want to remove his/her SD card periodically to prevent (temporarily) reboots, and doesn't want to factory reset their phone to get an OTA update that YOU KNOW is faulty. My phone rarely operates free of issue as a phone, free of issue as a camera, or free of issue as a smartphone. Of course yes, I know those problems that many people are having and have documented on these forums and others don't exist (in your minds at least) but humor me here.
Why do you continue to push devices you know are sub-par and you know won't last? What do you expect to gain?
Personally, I'm free from my 2-year contract (wish I could have had a phone that lasted that long) in about 60 days, which is a huge relief because I've grown tired of paying for 4G LTE service when the majority of the time I'm in 1X (not to mention your illegal data throttling on my Grandfathered "unlimited" account once I've hit the 2GB limit that I never agreed to. Breach of contract anyone?), at which point I'll be dropping your business forever. So, one account soon to be down, how is that business model working for you Verizon?
If you've made it this far (and if this post is miraculously not deleted) I urge you:
Consumer: drop these ******** as soon as you can.
Verizon: get in touch with me, you've got all my info. Lend me a phone that will work (a WORKING phone, one capable of sending/receiving calls without random reboots) until Dec 06th and after that I'll send it back to you along with my last payment and we'll  never have to converse again.
If you're in a similar boat forum members, please chime in.
    Thanks for your time.

My Incredible was lovely. Didn't have a single issue with it. Traded it in for a Moto Razr M and somehow I feel like I ditched an old faithful friend. My first Razr M crapped out and let me down. Had to exchange it for another one.  Sure Verizon's expensive and their data allowances are meager, miniscule and paltry, but I can live with that for now. So everyone's experience is different. Sorry you've had issues with your Droid Inc.

  • HTC Incredible 4G LTE will not Power Up!

I have had this phone since July 2012.  Sometime around August 2013 I started having trouble with the phone turning off randomly.  This phone has NEVER been dropped or gotten wet.  In fact, I baby it since I dropped my old Blackberry and shattered the screen.  I bought a protective case and screen cover for the HTC.  Shortly after it began randomly turning off it would no longer charge using the Mini-USB Charge Port.  I bought two replacement batteries that came with an external charger.  Using the external charger, the phone worked for a short time.  After about two weeks I had the same Shut Off problem again until I rigged it by leaving off the battery cover and sticking a penny in there to make sure the battery was making good contact with the phone's points.  I figured maybe it had a bad/loose connection.  Although it was very inconvenient, it worked for about two months (if I laid it on the table) and allowed me to save my pictures at least.  Then one day it just would not turn on anymore, even using my penny "trick".  I am sure the two 3rd party batteries and HTC battery is good because when I put them on the charger for a few hours the light turns from red to blue, indicating a full charge.
Since Verizon Customer Support could not help me other than suggesting I spend $400 on a replacement, I am about to replace the Mini-USB Charging Port to see if this works.  I am trying this because it doesn't register any power at all with the battery or the cord plugged in.  I would rather try a $2to $3 fix than a $400-$600 replacement.  Has anybody else tried this?  Are there any Repair Manuals available or Parts Lists?  I am about to remove and replace the Mini-USB Charging Port from the phone using a YouTube Video for guidance.  Although the video is for an Incredible 2 there are only minor differences.  I found a replacement Port that requires soldering on the internet for under $2.  The whole piece with ribbon and screw mount that doesn't involve soldering is available for under $3.  Before I open the phone, order the part, and get out the soldering iron I want to make sure there are no known issues or fixes.  At what point is HTC responsible for selling a faulty product?
I notice there are multiple posts about the HTC Incredibles' power problem with no answers other than, "Try a Hard Reset" or "Delete the last app you installed" by VZW Staff.  Then the topic gets Locked for some reason!  One post had over 10,000 views!  As other people have replied, you can't reset or delete what you cant Power On.
Does anybody have any suggestions other than a Class Action Suit?  My "New Every Two" isn't up until July 2014, I've been using an old LG flipper for a few months and it is very annoying considering the amount of texts I send!  I've been with Verizon for over ten years now and I am unable to find ANY loyalty from Verizon!  I can get no love even though it's well over $10,000 I have spent with this company!  Makes me think a little harder on where MY loyalties lie.

Did you ever get your phone to power on? I've had this issue off and on for months. Of course Verizon cannot help. What is the trick to get the phone to charge and come back on? The battery is new and the phone was working fine as long as I did not allow it to die, but it died today before I could place it on the charger. And as always, it hasn't come back on.

  • Wifi Reception on HTC Incredible

I am having the same reception problem from  my wifi on my htc incredible. Even when the icons tell me the system is running 3 g reception (which rarely happens), and all my wifi bars are filled, I still cannot connect. I have performed all the above suggestions and still cannot connect. I was without reception all day yesterday and all day today.

Unfortunately, I'm seeing problems with the iPad 3 on the internet with this very problem. Some on this website. My iPad 3 was made in March 2012. Maybe the problem was fixed along the way or maybe, it's just a figment of my imagination. I'm sending this one back for a refund. I guess i'll take a chance on another iPad 3 since my problem is appparently unique. Thanks for your help.

  • I've given up on the HTC Incredible

I thought maybe FROYO would make things better, but it didn't.  The HTC Incredible was a super everything-else-but-a-phone smart phone.  I just couldn't hear some folk who I talked to on the phone; they were usually on another cellphone. Sometimes words got dropped, or the sound quality as too shrill.  All landline calls, and bluetooth earpiece managed calls, were excellent (although reception inside buildings was not terrific).  But since most folks I know used cellphones, I couldn't take it anymore and had to give up.  I used one of the other upgrade plans in my family plan to get a Samsung Fascinate.  Its only has 2.1 but, as a phone, it is great.  I have no regrets dumping the Incredible other than the money that I wasted.  I even had to have the original Incredible I purchased replaced because of memory issues.
My RIM Blackberry Curve was probably the best phone I've ever owned, except that the internet experience was just awful. But as a  phone, nothing was as good...even the Samsung.

I feel the same about my former Blackberry Bold and 8800. Blackberry knows/knew how to build a good solid handset.
