HTML Email Newsletters

Hi,
Im tying to find out the best way to create HTML email
newsletters but cant find a good starting point, in terms of what
application to use (if any) and a sample template?

Send HTML emails

I am sending an HTML email. HTML created in dremaweaver, and
sent through Outlook Express... it all works fine... The design
looks good. The images are there. It all works fine except one
thing:
THE PROBLEM:
On the recieving end, the images also appear as "attachment"
files, even though I know I sent just HTML with images linking to
my server.
THIS IS WHAT I WANT:
Basically, I don't want the email to have attachments, but
just an HTML email and thats it.
Please somebody Help!!!

The issue is this:
When I'm sending it, there is no attachments.. The problem is
on the recieving end.. Yahoo Mail for example shows up as
attachments.. My other computer, Outlook shows it as attachments..
I don't understand how it worked on yours..
Ironically, when i recieve HTML email newsletters from Yahoo,
or any other company, their HTML emails never have any attachments.
I am not 100% familiar with HTML yet.. so you have to explain
things a little more.. please help

Does dreamweaver cs4 offer html email templates by any chance?

I am trying to create an html email which does not fall apart when sent via email. I am currently working on cs3. just wondering if cs4 has this new functionality?

HTML Emails and background images in Dreamweaver

Hello. I created a HTML email in Dreamweaver. The original design came out of Indesign and had very specific background art. I removed all the text out of the Indesign and created a jpg. I took this jpg in Photoship and sliced and optimized it. I imported this HTML into Dreamweaver. Here I need to add in all the text (which is variable). I was originally thinking that you can only place background images with CSS. But I was told that you should not use CSS for HTML emails. So instead I left all the background art as normal images inside of a table. At this point I need to add text over these images. They only way I could figure out to do it was to add a div tag right over the image and type into there. This seemed to work fine but when I tested it in some emails all the div tags with text showed up under the table with images. This needed to display over. What is the best way to handle this issue? Thank you in advance.

Sorry, but you cannot layer text over images in emails. Simplify your design or make an image with text on it in Photoshop. Use absolute URLs to images on your web server. And give people who can't see graphics and HTML pages in their email client a link to the HTML page on your web server.

How to send an HTML email?

Hey guys
For the longest time I've been wanting to send HTML emails with Mail, not for promotional stuff, but more for thanking our clients for their business. This is the perfect holiday season to send a Thank You email to them, but I don't want just to send a plain and boring text email, I want graphics on it. I know this wasn't possible to do with any previous OSX until Tiger. This is what the Mail page says... - HTML Message Composition - Mail uses the Safari engine to format newly composed email using HTML. I read another post about an HTML Script to work with mail but it got so confusing that I wasn't able to make it work. Can anybody tell how to make this work? A step-by-step tutorial would be great, not just for me but for all those Mail users that are trying to do the same thing. If Apple can send those HTML emails and Newsletters, why can't we? I don't think they're using a Windows computer or any other email software to do this. Better not! :P

Hello Luis.
Although RTF with Tiger Mail is basic HTML, you can't compose complex HTML within the body of a message.
You can use an HTML composer of choice to include embedded images/graphics and/or objects that are stored on a server (to be downloaded/rendered from the server) when the message is opened by recipients instead of attaching images/graphics to the message.
After saving the document, you can open the document with Safari to ensure the layout and settings are correct and at the menu bar, choose Edit > Mail Contents of This Page.
A new Mail.app message will open and the contents of the webpage will be copied to the message and it will be sent in its entirety.

HTML emails show up as code only, no formatting

Hi All,
I am trying to learn how to send out HTML Newsletters for my clients. I have no trouble creating the design and layout (in GoLive), but when I cut and paste the code into Mail, it just shows up as code. I have uploaded my graphics to a server and have resolved my URLs to that server, so that's not the issue. It just seems to be something here. I've also tried it in Netscape Mail and Entourage, no good. I receive HTML email form others just fine. Ideas?

You can't cut and paste HTML code in the body of a message since the Mail.app does not include an HTML composer.
Save your GoLive document and open the document with Safari.
At the menu bar, go to File and select Mail Contents of This Page.
The rendered GoLive document in Safari will be copied to a new Mail.app message.

Problem with HTML email formatting

I'm using Firefox 4.0.1. I have a job function that requires me to use web page based email. When responding to emails, Firefox automatically places the cursor at the bottom of the chain as opposed to the top of the chain as in previous versions. I need for the response to start at the top of the page. This is the way it worked in my previous version of Firefox and no settings in the email program have been changed. In fact there is no setting in that program to specify where the response will go. I'm assuming the cursor placement is being determined by Firefox. Please help me change it.

1 px border not displaying in HTML email

Hi,
I created a HTML with a 1 px gray border. I opened it in Entourage and the border is not visible. Not sure why this is happening....

Designing HTML emails is a challenge because email clients differ so much in what they do and do not support. I don't know about Entourage specifically but Lotus Notes definitely doesn't support borders in HTML emails.

Html email rendering as attachment

I'm a developer sending out an html email. Web clients like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail render the email inline as expected, as do desktop email clients. But for one recipient, Sun Java System Messenger Express renders the html as an attachment. There is not boundary etc. like you would use for multipart mail or attachments, so what could be triggering this? The recipient can receive other similar html newsletters just fine. The html is relatively simple tables with images and some formatted text. The mail is being sent via php's mail function (sendmail).

I should also point out that Messenger Express is a deprecated client (i.e. Sun stopped providing fixes for this client a long time ago) and was replaced by UWC/Communications Express which has in turn been replaced by Convergence.

HTML Email Project

I am needing to create a polished html email and then be able to send it out via Outlook. Similar to sending a mail merge in publisher but much more polished and html friendly. Does anyone have any suggestions on what programs that Adobe offers might help with that or any suggestions on the best way to get this accomplished? I really appreciate the help!!

Optimizing html email

how much coding and programming go into email newsletters?
i subscribe to many and never have problems with spam
filters, image viewing, ect......
how much work go into creating these services?
im a designer who has been contracted to create one,
but am i in over my head?
can my client expect near 100% success of her mail out
without the use of professional programing
(or the use of web services like constant contact or
webmonkey)?
ive already pulled out my hair trying to get html emails to
dipsplay properly.
(does any one know why entourage,yahoo, and mac mail,
download absolute linked images and display them as
attachements
AFTER the initial email????)

Html eMail Newsletter

For those of you who have worked with me before - I'm trying, I really am.
I'm building a html email newsletter from scratch for the first time and running into a few issues.

On the surface I only see three real issues (a box extending beyond its area, text that won't align, text that won't adjust to the right color), but when I ask Dreamweaver to point out code irregularities - well there is one consistant issue I'm doing wrong over and over again. And one small issue with font sizing (code) that I can probably sort out.
That being said, as typical of me, I have bitten off more than I can chew. I've basically used two examples of email html and tweaked it to build what I wanted. So...........I can't tell whether my tags are overlapping or written in the wrong way (or both).
Yes, I know. Kind of a mess in there. What I find strange about html is when you try to tweak it - it invariably wants to get worse than it was originally.

If you are planning on sending this to all your customers, I wouldn't think "just live with what we've got" would be a good response to have. How your newsletters look to the customer would either encourage them to continue to use you, or discourage them and you might find they "unsubscribe" from your notifications faster than you can send them out.
There is a lot of work to get the emails to look correct in EVERY email client but fortunately there are a lot of helpful guides around the internet to help with that. I have listed some below. All you need is one, fully working template which can then serve as the basis for all the rest. It's time well spent, in my opinion.

Constant Contact html email site

Anyone had any experience with http://www.constantcontact.com ?
My problem is this:
I create about 5 or 6 html emailers a month for a client and ALL images are stored in individual folders on their server because they are named slice_1, slice_2, slice_3 etc. Plus its easier to manage should they have the necessity to change a slice which contains a price or something which is easily amended.
I have another similar client who use constantcontact.com. It appears that in constantcontact you can't create folders to store your images???.......they just give you a single image library. Obviously the naming convention slice_1, slice_2 etc won't work as presumably the old image will be overwritten if I upload another one with the same name.
Anyone else had this issue. I don't want to have to give each image an individual name because it will be a nightmare to manage. I really need the facility to contain different html email images in seperate folders. Maybe there is an option in constantcontact but I'm not seeing it?

P.S. I guess the other option would be to house the folder/images on the clients web server and just send the html through constantcontact. Its my clients choice of html emailer handler so I can't switch to an alternative.

You will need access to the webserver.
I store everything in the newsletter folder as I am a real stickler for directory structure. It works and I send out about 3,000 newsletters a month.

Jim, yes I could do that but prefer not to clog up my server with client images. I could always buy some dedicated server space for the client. Its no big deal just makes things a little more complex than it should do when trying to explain issues to the client.
I agree, I like to organise my html emails so they are in their own folder. Don't want to go raking around 100's of loose images just to find what belongs to what........that would be a slow process.

Why is my HTML email showing up wrong in different email account?

I've seen this before and I think it has to do with CSS (which I realize isn't supposed to be in emails), but I'm super new to this and have scoured the internet to find out exactly what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. It shows up properly in my Yahoo acccount, but not in my Gmail accounts (which initially threw it in Spam, if that has anything to do with it). I only know the very basics of HTML and CSS, but still have get this work done and I'm assuming someone will be able to view the code and see what my issue is pretty quick - I hope! It previews in browsers just fine, it's only when I'm click "Forward to a Friend" to send it to myself to test.

So, is it CSS causing this? Are the Tables setup incorrectly? Something not Inline? Not enough info for you? Gmail HATES ME?!

Many mail clients reject images, JavaScript and embedded CSS styles. For best results use plain text near the top to communicate your message and give a link to the actual web page on your server.
For mail clients that do have limited support for HTML, use uncomplicated tables and inline CSS rules (inside the body tag).
All that meta data description is a red flag to spam filters. You shouldn't be using meta description or keywords in e-mails.
