HTML Help control

I have a .chm file with a number of HTML Help Control
Shortcuts within it.
When the .chm is run from the local machine everthing works,
however from the network/intranet the .chm is opening and working
fine apart from the Help Control Shortcuts???
Any ideas?
Many Thanks

abdab35,
HTML Help Shortcut commands were permanently disabled in
non-local CHMs by a Windows security update (numbered
323180) that
Microsoft released two years ago. There is no way to re-enable
them, unfortunately; applying the workarounds to the more recent
896358 security update doesn't have any effect in this case.
If you need to implement Shortcut-like functionality in a
remotely stored help file, one possibility is to use the
KeyHelp ActiveX
control. This provides a KeyShortcut command that performs the
same function as the standard Shortcut command but isn't subject to
Microsoft's security restrictions. The only drawback is that you
must install KeyHelp on your users' machines.

  • RH9 ShortCut Help Control

    Hello,
We are using the evaluation copy of RoboHTML 9 on a Windows 7 64bit machine. We are considering upgrading from x5. We are creating Microsoft HTML Help chm files.  I'm having a problem with ShortCut Button Text. I convert an x5 project that uses Shortcut HTML Help Controls. All the shortcuts in every topic now appear with "value" as the button text. I try changing to the text I want and it appears correctly in Design. I then save the file and it still appears correctly. I open another topic, then come back to the topic with the shortcut and the text is back to "value". I've tried changing it in the HTML code also in <param name="ControlLabel" value="value" /> and <param name="Button" value="Text:value" /> but the same thing still occurs. Note the "value" text in these. I change "value" to something like "Yes" and it reverts back to "value" after doing the above.
I tried inserting a new Shortcut on an existing and new topic but the same thing happens with these as above.
However creating a new project does not experience the above problem. It appears to have something to do with the project conversion.
Does anyone know what is causing this? Is this a known problem or something with using an evaluation copy? We use shortcuts in a number of places and would need to know how to fix this before purchasing RH9. I can't see having to start all over again with a blank project.
Files are on the local drive, not network.
    Thanks
    John

    Hi John
Couple of things I'd be checking here.
    1. I'd begin by first ensuring I have a backup copy of the old X5 project. Once you are sure you are good there, try clicking Tools > Update DHTML Effects in Topics. I'm not certain this will have any effect, but suppose it's worth trying.
    2. When you examine the HTML code behind a Shortcut control, you should find there are two distinct areas. One appears with green text. That code is the "Design Time" code. The darker red code that immediately follows is the actual code used by the compiler. I find that often when copy controls I have to resort to amending things via HTML view. And some values are repeated more than once in the Design Time code.
I might suggest trying just removing all the green Design Time code leaving behind only the darker red code. RoboHelp should re-add the Design Time code for you if you do this. Maybe it will work differently this way.
Another possibility would be to click Tools > Options > General category and enable the option labeled Convert RoboHelp-edited topics to HTML. Again, I'm uncertain it will have any effect, but it's worth trying.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Missing Browse Sequences in HTML Help

    Problem
Browse sequences in our Microsoft HTML help (.CHMs) are missing after we upgraded from RoboHelp x5 (running WinXP Pro) to RoboHelp 9 (running Win7, 64-bit).
    Background
We've been using RoboHelp x5 and RoboSource Control 2.3 version control for several years. Prior to 2012, our RoboSource Control server machine was a WinXP Pro VM session, while our 3 RoboHelp/RoboSource Control client (author) machines were physical WinXP Pro machines.
After the first of this year, our 3 client machines were replaced with Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit physical machines. In order to continue running RoboHelp x5, we created a Windows XP Pro virtual machine on each client machine; Robohelp x5 and the RoboSource Control 2.3 client software were then installed and run from the WinXP VM environment. Browse sequences were included in the many (at least 4 per month) CHMs that we compiled/generated during the several months that we ran in this environment without any issues.
We just (over the past few weeks) upgraded to Adobe's Technical Communication Suite 3.5 (RoboHelp HTML 9 and RoboSource Control 3.1). A new Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit VM was created for the RoboSource Control server installation, and we simply installed the RoboHelp 9 and RoboSource Control 3.1 client software directly on our 3 Windows 7 client machines. We did not remove the VM sessions from the client machines, but we don't run them either.
Since we upgraded RoboHelp to version 9 (which is also to say, started running RoboHelp in a true Windows 7 64-bit environment), none of our browse sequences appear when we compile/generate a .CHM in RoboHelp 9 and then launch the .CHM from anywhere OTHER THAN within the RoboHelp HTML application. If we launch the Help from within RoboHelp, using either the Generate Primary Layout function (and then view result) or the View Primary Layout function (HTML Help is our primary layout), the browse sequences appear and function properly.
I've already researched (including this forum and all the previous posts on this issue) and run tests, attempting to identify the cause and/or resolve the issue. The actual tests and results are listed after the next section (which provides technical details on what I believed to be the critical aspects of this issue within our environment; perhaps someone will spot something regarding the version of the HHActiveX.dll or a path/value for one of the registry settings).

    Troubleshooting Tests and Results
    Test 1: Ran command line: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\HH.exe C:\Documents\DSISWHelp\DSISWHelp.chm
    Result: Browse sequences PRESENT.
    Test 2: Ran command line: C:\Windows\HH.exe C:\Documents\DSISWHelp\DSISWHelp.chm
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
    Test 3: Ran command line: C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-htmlhelp_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_24 4ae8599e6d81bb\HH.exe C:\Documents\DSISWHelp\DSISWHelp.chm
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
    Test 4: Ran command line: C:\Windows\winsxs\wow64_microsoft-windows-htmlhelp_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_2e 9f92abd2ce43b6\HH.exe C:\Documents\DSISWHelp\DSISWHelp.chm
    Result: Browse sequences PRESENT.
Test 5: Deleted HHP, CPD, and created new HTML Help SSL definition. Opened project, compiled with new SSL, opened CHM from Windows Explorer via double-click.
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
Test 6: RoboHelp install again. Didn't see any "repair" options, so I ran the install over the existing one. Then deleted HHP, CPD, and created new HTML SSL definition. Compiled. Opened the CHM from Windows Explorer via double-click.
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
Test 7: Edited the browse sequences to see if that would trigger or set a flag. Note: I already compared the "flags" (it's actually a number sequence) in the RHwnd.apj file (via Notepad) to the "flags" in the RHwnd.apj file. While I don't know which one represents browse sequence enabling, the number sequences were identical. Note: I compared RHwnd.apj files pre- and post-Browse Sequence enabling (with no other changes), but the flag values were completely different (it's not a simple 0/1 flag).
    Result: N/A
Test 8: I copied older CHMs that were generated/compiled in RoboHelp x5 over to my local, Window 7 Enterprise, 64-bit, SP1, machine. Launched the CHMs from Windows Explorer by double-clicking on them.
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
Test 9: I browsed over our network (via Windows Explorer) to our old RoboHelp x5/RoboSource Control 2.3 server, and launched older CHMs that were generated/compiled in RoboHelp x5 and still sitting on that machine, by double-clicking on them.
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
Test 10: I logged on (via RDS) to our old RoboHelp x5/RoboSource Control 2.3 server (WinXP), and launched older CHMs that were created (and never upgraded) in RHx5 by double-clicking on them.
    Result: Browse sequences PRESENT.
Test 11: I logged on (via RDS) to our old RoboHelp x5/RoboSource Control 2.3 server (WinXP), opened Windows Explorer on that machine, browsed over the network to our new RoboHelp 9/RoboSource Control 3.1 server (Win7), and then launched new CHMs that were generated/compiled in RoboHelp 9 by double-clicking on them.
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
Test 12: I logged on (via RDS) to our older RoboHelp x5/RoboSource Control 2.3 server (WinXP), copied CHMs that were generated/compiled on our new RoboHelp 9/RoboSource Control 3.1 server (Win7) in RoboHelp 9 over to the WinXP machine, and then launched them by double-clicking on them.
    Result: Browse sequences ABSENT.
    CONCLUSIONS
The machine you are logged on to matters more than where the CHM resides (that is, locally or on another networked machine), or even the version of RoboHelp that it was compiled/generated in (although as my next conclusion states, this last one does appear to matter).
Supporting evidence: CHMs that were compiled/generated in RoboHelp x5 only display browse sequences when they are launched (via double-click) locally from a WinXP machine. Browse sequences are absent when they're launched from a Win7 machine.
The version of RoboHelp that the CHM was compiled in matters.
Supporting evidence: Browse sequences in RoboHelp 9 generated/compiled CHMs do not appear, even when the CHMs reside on a WinXP machine. Is HHActiveX.dll somehow incorporated into the generate/compile process?
Either HH.exe or HHActiveX.dll, or both, matter.
Supporting evidence: Browse sequences appear in RoboHelp 9 generated/compiled CHMs on a Win7 machine when I launch the CHM from a command line, specifying which HH.exe to use.
Is this a function of the HH.exe (there are multiple instances of HH.exe on my Win7 machine, but the command line solution doesn't work for all of them; plus, each files seems to be identical/the same version), or
is it a function of HHActiveX.dll (does HHActiveX.dll registration control which HH.exe works, which would explain why some of HH.exe's don't work from a command line; the assumption here, then, is that when I double-click a CHM, the default HH.exe that is used isn't the one that's registered)?

    Hello again
Hopefully Colum won't mind my offering a few answers here and there,
    RoboFan wrote:
Thanks for the response, Rick. I appreciate the feedback.
    A few follow-up questions...
Can you confirm that neither the version of HH.exe, nor its file path matter?
Unsure what you mean by the version of HH.exe mattering. If you double-click a CHM file on a 64 bit Windows system, it appears that it automatically opens the 64 bit version of HH.exe. Short of having an installation routine of some sort that reconfigures the operating system to open the 32 bit version instead, I can't fathom a way that you would be able to influnce the behavior. Obviously, application developers are able to force this choice. I say that because after you compile and choose to View Result, RoboHelp opens the 32 bit version of the CHM viewer. Now whether this is behavior that is designed by the application developer or whether it's standard Windows behavior with RoboHelp being a 32 bit application is beyond me. Only Adobe can really say for sure what is going on.
How do I identify/verify that an instance of HHActiveX.dll is the 32-bit version?
How do I identify/verify that an instance of HHActiveX.dll is the 64-bit version?
I'm not sure there is a way. At least I'm not knowing a way. I think the best you can do is supply both versions and tell your installation team to register both. Then it shouldn't matter, no?
Where can I obtain the 64-bit version of HHActiveX.dll?Based on my research, it appears that C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 9\Redist on our 64-bit machines would be one such location. Can you verify this?
    I think Colum answered that.
Where should the 64-bit version of HHActiveX.dll that I subsequently register, reside (i.e., file path)?
Wherever you (or more precisely your installation team) decide to place it.
Likely you will think that answer is a bit snarky. But it's not intended to be that way. I'm just being honest. That's why you have to register it with Windows. The process of registering the DLL tells Windows where it is and how to work with it.
Should I replace all 32-bit instances of HHActiveX.dll on our 64-bit machines?
I've never encountered a need to replace versions. But again, likely only Adobe can answer that one with a straight face.
Assume I successfully register the 64-bit version of HHActiveX.dll. If our primary layout in RoboHelp HTML is HTML Help and I invoke the Generate Primary Layout function (and view result) or View Primary Layout function in RoboHelp HTML (i.e., I launch a .CHM from within RoboHelp HTML), will RoboHelp HTML re-register the 32-bit version of HHActiveX.dll? And if this is the case, does that mean I'll have to go back and re-register the 64-bit version each time I use either of those functions?
Launching the file does nothing to register the dll. That's why there is a separate process. The act of registering should be a one off. I believe what happens is that the Windows Registry is modified with information that HH.exe (64 bit or 32 bit) uses to determine what to do with the dll(s). Again, I'm not an application developer nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I can't claim to be one.
I believe that once you get both dlls properly registered, it won't matter if you launch the 64 bit or the 32 bit version of HH.exe. The Browse Sequence window should then show. (Incidentally, the same dll also manages behavior of the Glossary tab functionality in a CHM)
What happens in a mixed (32-bit/64-bit) environment?
Our in-house network contains a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit machines.
We post a .CHM (with browse sequences) to a standalone PC (no RoboHelp applications are installed on this particular PC) on our in-house network.
All the 32-bit and 64-bit machines on the network can access this single .CHM file via a shortcut.
Does the existence and registration of HHActiveX.dll matter for just the PC hosting the .CHM, just the PCs accessing the .CHM, or all PCs? And which versions of HHActiveX.dll need to be registered for which machines?
Yeah, good luck with that. Years ago, Microsoft modified the behavior of CHM content to disallow working that way. CHMs are intended to be copied to *EACH PC* using it. There are ways to modify the Windows Registry to allow CHM to still work that way, but it's something your IT staff have to manage. And by modifying things to allow it, you have to relax security and that makes a machine more vulnerable to attacks down the road. Years later, Peter Grainge still reports that his page on this is still among the most often visited. Click here to visit Peter's page.
Hope I managed to satisfactorily answer your "few" other questions. I tried... LOL

  • HTML Help window placement problem

    Hi -
We just upgraded to R7 from X5. It seems that now, for our
newly generated Help, the HTML Help viewer will not right-align.
Even if I specify the maximum width in the Window Properties
dialog, when generated, the window only extends about 4/5 of the
available screen width and is LEFT aligned.
Our screens are 1024 x 768 and RoboHelp seems to understand
this because if I max out the window size in the Window Properties
dialog, the height shown = 767 and width = 1019.
Is anyone else experiencing this placement problem?
    TIA

    Hi, Jack,
    > ... the HTML Help window properties dialog only accepts
    hard coordinates (i.e. pixels).
    > ...
    > Unless someone knows differently, for HTML Help,
apparently you can't get the HTML
    > Help viewer to appear right-aligned for all
    screen/display configurations
Yes, this is correct on both counts. Because of limitations
in Microsoft's design of HTML Help, you cannot specify the
dimensions of the help window in anything other than pixels, and
you can only set the initial position of the window relative to the
left and top edges of the screen.
On the other hand, if you are calling the help file
programmatically from an application, there may be some scope for
controlling the position of the help window by using standard
Windows functions. This article provides a small amount of extra
    information:

    Hi,
Post bug reports for IE to http://connect.microsoft.com/ie
Include detailed reproduction steps with your post.
    or
Contact the vendor of the Help file to see if they have an update.... some document types do not support the <base target attribute... they will need to update their HTML help files to standards.
HTML resource files may refer to online links or use a protocol handler that has no x64 handler installed on your machine..... Try turning off EPM...
The Windows HTML Help UI uses the Web Browser Control to host html content. I don't think it is supported any longer. IE's help has been changed to an online version in IE11.

  • Captivate movie imbedded in HTML help on 64-bit Vista / Win7

I have created a HTML help file with Robohelp 8 containing a link to a Captivate 4 movie and it  works fine on 32-bit versions of Vista and Windows 7, but just displays "Loading multimedia control ..." on 64-bit versions of those OSs.   Any idea what is happening and how to make it work on 64-bit target versions of Windows.  The help file was created on a 32-bit Vista OS.

    Hi Margaret
I recently encountered this myself. The only solution I've found for me is to install the Microsoft Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. Then open the CHM from inside there and your Captivate movies should display fine.
Oh, and nag Adobe about it by filing a Bug report. (Of course they likely won't pay much attention to it because I think they feel CHMs are dated and they would like to see AIR help flourish. Then again, I'm not sure if you would see the same thing in AIR help or not.)

  • Can HTML Help render a flash file with all bells and whistles?

I use Captivate to generate a .swf file, and inserted that .swf  into my RH8 project and generated HTML Help.
When I look at the .CHM file, the flash plays, but not ideally.
    a) It plays immediately when the topic is opened, and there's no way to re-start it except to close and re-open the topic.
    b) There are no stop/start/pause buttons on the flash video. Could I have added those in Captivate?
Is the .CHM-player capable of flash videos with controls?
    What did I miss?
    Thx.

    Hi Bruce
Ugh, from what you are describing, you are going at things all perfectly from the "Adobe approved and recommended" way of operating, but it's a method I don't personally use or recommend. Please tell me if I'm right with my assumption here.
I'm assuming (based on what you have stated) that you didn't launch Captivate separately, create the demo and publish it, then close Captivate and open RoboHelp HTML and insert what Captivate created. I'm guessing you used the wonderful (cough) integration that exists where you are in the middle of a topic and BAM! It suddenly hits you that a Captivate demo would be PERFECT here. So you cease your chain of thought while editing the topic and from inside RoboHelp you click File > New > Captivate demo and RoboHelp magickally opens Captivate to record the demo. You finish and close and the demo magickally appears inside RoboHelp.
    Did I guess right?
Assuming I did, your case is precisely why I avoid working that way and why I don't recommend it. When you work this way you give up control of many Captivate capabilities and you enter into a realm of frustration.
I recommend using Captivate as the separate application it is. Open it separately. Record and create the Captivate parts separately. Then bring it into RoboHelp once it's reached prime time.
Please advise and we will proceed accordingly with getting you squared.

  • HTML Help Workshop; creating the *.chm file

I'm about to create the documentation for a large LabVIEW
automation project. I would also like to use this
documentation as the content for my help-file used by the
LabVIEW program (a *.chm or a *.hlp-file) via the
    Control Online Help.VI.
The question is, what is the most optimal way to create this document,
without having to do the job almost twice ?
Normally I would create the documentation as a Word-document.
But as far as I see, the help-file system has to be created by the
MS HTML Help Workshop program, and that uses a large collection
of html-files to compile into the CHM file. And the html-files that
can be exported from Word aren't optimal, are they, with
a lot of extra code etc...
    Somebody have obvious
ly looked at this problem before me.
What are the tips, tricks and suggestions around ?
    Martin

For everbody else in the audience, check out
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/htmlhelp/ht
ml/vsconHH1Start.asp to download the free HTML help workshop. It is a
package which takes a set of HTML files and generates a standard win2k/XP
    helpfile.
However, your point is completely true: it just a major pain to make a
"pretty" version of both offline and online help. Both documents can have
the same content: a section explaining each menu item, several sections to
explain common tasks, a section explaining terms, etc. I dont see a huge
difference in usability as long as you create a union of material.
As for exporting I haven't found a good solution. As you've seen, you must
have the seperate HTML files for the help compiler. That's how the table of
contents, etc is generated. For my current project, I maintain that as a
frontpage web and apply a cascading style sheet. I didn't find a good way to
(automatically) split the word document into several HTML files or join the
frontpage web into a single organized word file. It wasn't a huge issue,
because I ended up using printed material as an installation guide and
    online help as program documentation.
The one particularily useful thing was programming a custom "document my
progam" VI which exports using my special documentation format. Of course
that is really only suitable for the programmer's reference section. However
I really, really, really hated using Print -> VI documentation and
reformatting every time. I'm sure you'll soon notice that it gets tiring.

You can always try "task.Part.OperatingSystem.RunCommand" with a command
like "start help.htm". For this to work, you only need to make sure you have
set up windows to start the correct browser when you doubleclick a file with
    extension "htm" or "html".
Of course this is not platform independent and requires setting up some
stuff outside the control of your application, which means additional
administrative overhead. But hey, that's a small tradeoff for such a simple
    solution.

application. My application is able to call up this HTML help file
in context-sensitive mode and everything is working great in the
Contents and Index panels EXCEPT when I click on List Topics (after
I enter a KEYWORD for search) in the Search panel.
I got an error that said “Unhandled exception in
    xxxx.exe.(HHCTRL.OCX):0xC00000FD: Stack overflow”
I am able to execute this .chm file by itself and the search
function works well in this case. I am using HHActiveX.dll that is
created on 2/23/04. Is this the correct version?? Any advice what
    to do here??

Hi agschin and welcome to the RH forums. The hhactivex.dll
file is not used by the search function so you can rule that our.
Have you tried recompiling and seeing if the problem still happens?
You can also start the Bug Hunter feature in RH - View > Output
View and then select the Bug Hunter button - and see if that throws
    up any clues.

  • How do I tell the installer to put my html help files in the helpdir symbolic location?

I used the File>>Print function to create an HTML help file for my application and specified in the VI Properties for the app to use <helpdir>:\ApplicationHelp.HTML as the Help Path. This should pop up the help file when a user selects "Help for This VI" from my custom menu. It works from my development directory because I installed the help files into the help directory manually, but I can't figure out how the get the installer to put the files in the correct location on the target system.  I tried putting them in [LabVIEW 2010 Help] in the Destination View for the Source Files category, but that didn't work.  Anyone know the right way to do this?

    Hey MrSmith,
In LabVIEW 2010 SP1, if open the Project and right click My Computer, you can add the help file as a source. After you have added this file, you can then create an installer. Under the Destination header, you can add your desired destination path. After you have done that, you can go to the Source Files header and add the help file to that destination you created.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your application!

Thank you for the reply! I had already done the steps you suggested, so let me put up some screen shots that should help you understand my issue better. First, I specified the path to the help information on the Documentation screen of the applications Properties:
Next I had added all the help files (DetectorFT.html and all the .png files) to the source in a virtual folder I named Resources.
Next, for the release build I specified the files to be Always Included on the Source Files header.
Next I created a Resource Directory as a destination for the release build.
Then I specified the Resource directory as the destination for the files for the Release build.
After creating the Release build, I created an Installer build and told it on the SOurce Files screen to put the help files into the [LabVIEW 2010 Help] directory.
I had assumed that putting the files in the [LabVIEW 2010 Help] destination would put them into the correct directory when the installer ran.  When I ran the installer on the target system, the ran the application I tried to select the "Help for This VI" tab on the menu, but it was grayed out indicating it could not find the file in the proper location.  So the question I have is, what IS the proper location for the files to be installed to so the the application will find the Help files when it is looking for them at the <helpdir> Symbolic Path location? Thanks again!

  • Can I have a Text Search in HTML Help output?

    Hello,
I'm relatively new to Robohelp and while testing the possible output methods I found that there is no internal text search function available for the Microsoft HTML Help (.chm) file.
Does anyone know if it is possible to enable this function?
    Thank you
    Holli

    Hi Holli
Perhaps try creating a brand new window?
Make sure Microsoft HTML Help is your Primary Layout by right-clicking it in the Single Source Layouts recipe box.
Then open the Project Set-up pod and create a new window.
Then in the Single Source Layout recipe, make sure you choose the new window you just created.
    Recompile and check.
    Cheers... Rick
