HTMLDB Administration

Does anyone have any recommendations for good documentation for Administration of HTMLDB? I am not able to find much information, but maybe I'm just not searching correctly. I'm looking for some how to's, recommended practices, etc. I find all sorts of information for users, but I'm looking specifically for information from an administrators point of view. Even such simple information as how to increase the DB size seems difficult to find. I know how to do this from a dba's perspective, but I did not know if there is a way to do this from within HTMLDB. I have not found any information, or scant information at best, regarding this and other parts of HTMLDB administration. Another specific thing I am looking for is best practices regarding workspace/schemas. Since multiple schemas can be associated with Multiple workspaces, what is the best practice? For example, is it best to give each developer their own workspace, or share a workspace with their own schemas, or share a schema but have their own workspaces, etc.
The documentation I downloaded from Oracle appears have a users guide, but no administrators guide. As far as version, currently we are using 1.6, and will eventually upgrade to 2.0.
Any sources would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Manu,
The developer/administrator attributes for the HTML DB user accounts won't help you. Please read the User Guide about authorization schemes and also search this forum using keywords like "authorization", "VPD", and "roles" to find many useful threads.

  • HTMLDB Administration as a DBA

What are the best practices for HTMLDB from the DBA (Administrative) point of view? This would include backup and more importantly recovery. What about table maintenance activities such as purging?

I dont imagine they are any different than regular Oracle backup/recovery. Everything HTMLDB does is stored in objects in the FLOWS_xxxxxx, FLOW_FILES schemas. The PL/SQL packages that make up HTML DB itself are stored in the data dictionary along with everything else. HTML DB automatically sets up purge dbms_jobs during installation that you can manage using the admin interface.
    Thanks

  • Can non HTMLDB Administrators add users?

Does anyone know if there is a way for a workplace administrator to add a user to the HTMLDB enviornment if they are not also an HTMLDB administrator? I was trying the following
    wwv_flow_api.set_security_group_id(p_security_group_id=>100) ;
    then after setting some variables
    wwv_flow_fnd_user_api.create_fnd_user(p_user_name=>v_UsrNm,
    p_first_name=>v_FrstNm,
    p_last_name=>v_LstNm,
    p_email_address=>v_Email,
    p_web_password=>v_UsrPwd) ;
However when the user is not an HTMLDB administrator, you get the following error
ORA-20001: User requires ADMIN privilege to perform this operation.
Is there any way around this?

In the application we have a "Create User" page under the Administration Tab and after filling out the required fields, and pressing the "create" button, the process gets run. And yes, I've taken out the set_security_group_id call and it still fails, giving me the following message.
ORA-20001: User requires ADMIN privilege to perform this operation.
    HTMLDB Product Build is: 1.6.1.00.02
    Schema Compatibility is: 2004.07.04
Are those the numbers you were looking for?

  • How to reference HTML DB Environment Preferences

    Hi,
In various applications I have emails that are sent to users from the HTMLDB "administrator"... Right now the email address is statically located in my pl/sql procedures.
I'm wondering if I can set the admin email address as a HTMLDB environment Preference and reference in my functions?
    Thanks,

  • CGI Support

Are CGI scripts supported ?My assumption is no as XE uses embedded web server now (XMLDB).

Are CGI scripts supported ?My assumption is no as XE
uses embedded web server now (XMLDB).
But HTMLDB Administration page, go to About Database,
then CGI Environment. This gives impression you are
running a cgi script. The first generation of mod_plsql, from which the embedded PL/SQL gateway is derived, existed a long time ago when Yahoo was incorporated and it was called the Oracle Web Agent (OWA) and was a CGI binary program. For that reason, the CGI parameters were passed to PL/SQL stored procedures as that.
Today, neither mod_plsql nor the embedded PL/SQL gateway are CGI-BIN programs but we still inherit CGI. In fact, we now take CGI at the abstract level -- a specification on how HTTP request information is passed to the server program, in this case, the PL/SQL stored procedures.
And to answer your question, the HTTP server in XE (the XML DB HTTP listener) does not support CGI scripts.

  • Multiple Schema Access

    Greetings,
I have a default schema which was created when the workspace was created. In addition, I added another schema within the Manage Schema to Workspace Assignments area in side the HTMLDB Administrator area. I'm able to go into the SQL Workshop->Tables, choose from my 2 schemas mapped to my workspace, and see the tables that I have in both schemas. The problem I'm having is when I wish to use a wizard to create a form based on a table or view. The only table I'm able to work with is tables that were created in the default schema as I'm not allowed to change schemas through this wizard. Is there a way to do this or am I missing something. Does this mean I'm not able to work within this other schema and it's tables?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Clifford Moon

    Hi Sergio,
Thanks for the prompt response. I havent had a chance to try the second option (truthfully, i'm not exactly sure how to do that at this point even..). I did however go into the Administrator Account, Went to Schema's by Workspace, and chose my second schema as the default schema for my workspace. THis makes no difference in that wizard. It still shows only the default (one that was provisioned when the account was created) schema. (Form on Table Wizard)

  • Problem with htmldb 2 (Sorry APEX)!

I installed htmldb 2 on a windows XP, Oracle 10gR1 (which has enhanced by companion CD downloaded form Oracle's site). Everything went OK but when I want to connect to it by this url: http://localhost:7777/pls/htmldb it takes my username, pass but says:

I noticed many differences between my installed Apache and documents of htmldb. I run a 9.0.4.0.0 Apache server and the dads.conf and httpd.conf are as following:

    # the directives.
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    # After this file is processed, the server will look for and process

    # unless you have overridden these with ResourceConfig and/or
    # AccessConfig directives here.
    # The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
    # 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
    # whole (the 'global environment').
    # 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
    # which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
    # These directives also provide default values for the settings
    # of all virtual hosts.
    # 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
    # different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
    # same Apache server process.
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do not begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "E:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Companion\Apache\Apache" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "E:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Companion\Apache\Apache/logs/foo.log".
    # NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
    # instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
    # If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
    # will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
    # an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
    # confusion.
    ### Section 1: Global Environment
    # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
    # such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
    # can find its configuration files.
    # ServerType is either inetd, or standalone. Inetd mode is only supported on
    # Unix platforms.
    ServerType standalone
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    # Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
    ServerRoot "E:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Companion\Apache\Apache"
    # PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
    # identification number when it starts.
    PidFile logs/httpd.pid
    # ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
    # Not all architectures require this. But if yours does (you'll know because
    # this file will be created when you run Apache) then you must ensure that
    # no two invocations of Apache share the same scoreboard file.
    ScoreBoardFile logs/httpd.scoreboard
    # In the standard configuration, the server will process httpd.conf (this
    # file, specified by the -f command line option), srm.conf, and access.conf
    # in that order. The latter two files are now distributed empty, as it is
    # recommended that all directives be kept in a single file for simplicity.
    # The commented-out values below are the built-in defaults. You can have the
    # server ignore these files altogether by using "/dev/null" (for Unix) or
    # "nul" (for Win32) for the arguments to the directives.
    #ResourceConfig conf/srm.conf
    #AccessConfig conf/access.conf
    # Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
    Timeout 300
    # SendBufferSize: controls setsockopt() call made to set send buffer size on
    # all sockets. Default OS value on most Windows platforms is too small.
    # Larger values can help if the average page size served by OHS is
    # large (~64 k)
    SendBufferSize 16384
    # KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
    # one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
    KeepAlive On
    # MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
    # during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
    # We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
    MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
    # KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
    # same client on the same connection.
    KeepAliveTimeout 15
    # Apache on Win32 always creates one child process to handle requests. If it
    # dies, another child process is created automatically. Within the child
    # process multiple threads handle incoming requests. The next two
    # directives control the behaviour of the threads and processes.
    # MaxRequestsPerChild: the number of requests each child process is
    # allowed to process before the child dies. The child will exit so
    # as to avoid problems after prolonged use when Apache (and maybe the
    # libraries it uses) leak memory or other resources. On most systems, this
    # isn't really needed, but a few (such as Solaris) do have notable leaks
    # in the libraries. For Win32, set this value to zero (unlimited)
    # unless advised otherwise.
    # NOTE: This value does not include keepalive requests after the initial
    # request per connection. For example, if a child process handles
    # an initial request and 10 subsequent "keptalive" requests, it
    # would only count as 1 request towards this limit.
    MaxRequestsPerChild 0
    # Number of concurrent threads (i.e., requests) the server will allow.
    # Set this value according to the responsiveness of the server (more
    # requests active at once means they're all handled more slowly) and
    # the amount of system resources you'll allow the server to consume.
    ThreadsPerChild 50
    # Server-pool size regulation. Rather than making you guess how many
    # server processes you need, Apache dynamically adapts to the load it
    # sees --- that is, it tries to maintain enough server processes to
    # handle the current load, plus a few spare servers to handle transient
    # load spikes (e.g., multiple simultaneous requests from a single
    # Netscape browser).
    # It does this by periodically checking how many servers are waiting
    # for a request. If there are fewer than MinSpareServers, it creates
    # a new spare. If there are more than MaxSpareServers, some of the
    # spares die off. The default values are probably OK for most sites.
    #MinSpareServers 5
    #MaxSpareServers 20
    # Limit on total number of servers running, i.e., limit on the number

    # This comment line, the first line of the script, consists of the symbols
    # pound (#) and exclamation (!) followed by the path of the program that

    # the appropriate ScriptAlias or Options ExecCGI directives for the files

    # However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can
    # use the Registry to match files by extention. The command to execute

Secondly, I'm confused by your comment -
I do not have Apache 9.3 or higher but I think oracle should offer this in its companion CDOracle does offer the Apache server, if you're saying you didn't get it from Oracle then where did your Apache server come from?

    rmelideo,
Firstly, you refer to "WebDB administrator" and "WebDB 1.6". This is not WebDB. You're confusing this with an entirely different product released in the late 90's.
You don't say what your specific error is. But the file does not exist errors in your Apache error log look suspicious. It looks like you have not copied the images directory from the HTML DB 2.0 distribution.

  • Can't Access Administrative Services after "Disable Workspace Login"

    Hi,
I have been testing a production configuration on my local APEX instance, and run into the following difficultly. I disabled the Workspace Login from

Hi Scott, jeeze.... that was quick! Must be the time difference :)
Must have submitted that post by accident, I was just swearing at my pc and typing it out again.
What I was trying to say was that I disabled the Workspace Login from Admin Services > Manage Service > Security.
When I attempted to login as the internal workspace, I get a 404.
Then, I though this must be the whole point of the apex_admin interface and attempted to log in via:
    http://localhost:7777/pls/htmldb/apex_admin
    Still the 404.
I have checked the access logs, and a 302 is generated before each 404.
I have also executed the following (as per instructions for reverting from a 'Disable Administrator Login") - just to be sure:
    alter session set current_schema=flows_030100
    BEGIN
    WWV_FLOW_API.SET_SECURITY_GROUP_ID(p_security_group_id=>10);
    WWV_FLOW_PLATFORM.SET_PREFERENCE(
    p_preference_name => 'DISABLE_ADMIN_LOGIN',
    p_preference_value => 'N' );
    end;
    commit
Following a restart of both the db and http server, Im still getting the 404.

  • How to install a "full" version of HTMLDB

    Hi,
I've downloaded Oracle Express and I like the simplicity of the installation and setup. However the "version" of HTMLDB / Application Express has some differences from the full one available online. Particularly the Workspace concept.
I really need to have a full version since I'll be having more then 1 developer working on an application. This doesn't seem to be possible in the version that comes with Oracle XE.
I'd like to remove the current version and install the full HTML DB available online. Anyone know how I can do this?
    Thanks,
    Martin

So the concept of the Workspace is dead?Well, the concept of a workspace is still there, but implicit only. Once an existing database user connects to http://localhost:8080/apex for the first time (e.g. HR), an implicit workspace is created on the fly. An Apex user for this workspace is created too, by copying the credentials of the database user to this workspace. This user is automatically created as the administrator of this workspace.
The most noteworthy differences between Apex 2.1 (bundled with XE) and Apex 2.0 (standalone) are:
    1) No explicit administrators or developer accounts
    2) Only one schema per workspace, you cannot assign more schemas to a workspace.
How can I allow multiple developers to work on the
same application then?Well, since you cannot share components across workspace (subscription feature) I tend to organize as many applications in a single workspace as possible (related applications operating on common data).
I guess I would create a single developer schema that has access to all related objects in different schemas (if necessary). Set it up using synonyms and grants.
All developers would log in to Apex/XE using this developer account.
    My personal suggestion ;),
    ~Dietmar.

  • Htmldb application export to ApEx

    Hi
We are going to upgrade our htmldb 1.6 to Application Express 3.0. Since apex will be running in a new machine we have to import htmldb export file to our new apex environment. The question is, can it be done?
    Best wishes
    Kristin

    Hi Kristin,
    Yes sure...no problem at all.
Your APEX administrator can export the workspaces (if it's important for you to maintain the same workspace information, such as cookie users etc), also you can use the APEX interface to export your individual applications, or if you have a lot of applications you can use the APEXExport command to automate the task for you.
You can use the usual DB tools to export your schema and data, such as exp/imp, or my personal favorite datapump (if you've never used datapump, it rocks for migrating data between servers).
I wrote a blog post about APEXExport a while ago, which you might find useful -
    http://jes.blogs.shellprompt.net/2006/12/12/backing-up-your-applications/
    Hope this helps,
    John.

  • HTMLDB and Workflows - pl/flow, Oracle Workflow or BPEL?

    Hi,
I am looking for a workflow engine to integrate with HTMLDB for workflow applications.
Most of the stuff I try to do will happen in the database (as of now).
Which one should I choose? Which one is easy to use (intuitive, good samples)?
I haven't used any of those, which is the fastest to learn?
Can I graphically model the workflows with pl/flow, so that they can be modified by administrators later?
What about the future? It seems to me that many links to Oracle Workflow seem to disappearing from OTN.
I find pl/flow interesting, but is it used a lot? Is there still development going on?
Any experiences / suggestions will be helpful. Or perhaps you use something completely different?
    Thanks,
    ~Dietmar.

    Hi Bob,
    thanks for thoughts on this.
I was in touch with the lead developer of pl/flow and he explained that there was not much to add since the package was XPDL interface 2 compliant and most of the users were happy with it.
You can even import workflows from XPDL visual workflow modelers which has some charme, since it is standards based.
I was reluctant to use Oracle Workflow for several reasons.
    * It appears to be complex
    * It is not standards based
    * The administration interface looks "aged" (that lead me to believe that Oracle had not much interest in further promoting the product)
    * I don't know where the product is heading since BPEL is the big hype and the development of Oracle's former Java based workflow product is being stopped.
The cost shouldn't be an issue since it is included in the database license as far as I have researched.
I would be interested in all developer experiences using Oracle Workflow with HTMLDB or other tools.
Is perhaps the HTMLDB - developer team working on an integration with Oracle Workflow?
    Thanks,
    ~Dietmar.

  • Administrative Privilege

I'm sure I'm missing something, but could anyone tell me exactly where in HTMLDB v 2.1.0.00.05 I would give a user Admin privilege? I seem to remember in an earlier version that when you brought up the user in workspace users, you had a "developer", "administrator", "end user" checkboxes. Those are now missing and for the life of me I can't find where that's specified.
The reason I ask is that I'm building an application where a user can create other end users (not other developers or administrators), and when I call the htmldb_util.create_user function, it returns "ORA-20001: User requires ADMIN privilege to perform this operation."
Any info will be much appreciated.

Thank you for getting back to me Scott.
You are correct that when I use the database user account to log-in to the application, I can call the htmldb_util.create_user function to create other APEX accounts, however these are created as end-user-only accounts without ADMIN privilege. I'm still not seeing a way to create an APEX account for the application that has the privilege to create other APEX end-user accounts.
It appears that when I created the database user (schema) account, it automatically created an associated APEX account with ADMIN privilege, which makes sense. But if I remember correctly, previous versions of HTMLDB allowed me to create additional HTMLDB accounts with ADMIN privilege without them needing associated database accounts (the "administrator" vs. "end-user" checkboxes).
What I'm looking to achieve is to have one database user account (with associated APEX ADMIN account), use that to create several APEX-only ADMIN accounts, and then allow those accounts to create their APEX-only end-user accounts.
Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about doing it?
    Thanks again,
    John
