HTPC Coaxial Help / Quest

Hi everyone,
I just joined this forum and am fairly new to the HTPC world. I am confused about how coaxial works when connecting to a receiver, and more importantly, what X-Fi product (or other product) I should purchase for my needs.
I want to be able to connect my HTPC (which has both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray playback) to an Onkyo HT-SR800 home theater system (http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=HT-SR800&class=Systems&p=i). The system is 7. surround, and I want a sound card that can support / handle that.
I am somewhat familiar with pass-through vs. on-board decoding after reading the stickies, but am unclear as to what I need to specifically connect to the Onkyo system to get the best sound / full 7. capability.
. Is it best to let the receiver do the decoding since it does it on board? If so, do I need much of a sound card on my computer?
2. This is essentially an extension to the first question: Does the quality of the sound card make much difference if I'm just connecting to a receiver via optical? In other words, if the receiver would do decoding, does the quality of the sound card come into play much?
3. I saw some features don't work when connecting via digital. Would the Crystallizer still work?
I apologize if these topics are covered in other messages, but I searched and was unable to find a clear answer (largely due to my lack of understanding of most of these concepts). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • T Box: help with coaxial vs threaded wall socket issue

    Hi there! Hope someone out there can help me or point me in the right direction! I purchased a T Box Entertainer Bundle for my new rental residence, and after moving in yesterday I received my T Box today. All excited about plugging in the T Box and catching up on some viewing from the past few days, but it seems that while my new place has a TV connection, it is not the standard coaxial type! Arrrggghhhh! There is the usual phone connection attached to the wall, and beneath that a wall plate branded with Telstra (upside down!) and instead of the usual coaxial connection there is a threaded socket with a small female pin port. Just to satisfy my own curiosity I did try and plug the coaxial cable which came with the T Box to the socket, but obviously it doesn't fit either with male or female connections. A bit of slow online searching later (I also don't have my internet or landline connected as yet, and am in a mobile blackspot to compound the problem) and I am pretty sure what I have in the wall is actually a cable or Foxtel connection. From what I've read, if I get an adapter I will still need to get the whole thing rewired to an antenna...is this correct? Or is it possible that as the T Box has Foxtel anyway that either an adapter or a different cable would work?Or is this something that the tech can do when they come out to connect my landline and ADSL2+? Fingers crossed there is a reasonable solution to this as with being in a rental my options are limited!Many thanks in advance to you all.

    That wall plate is for Foxtel – not FTA. You will not be able to get BigPond cable in that complex. DIY I would look at smaller caravan type antenna (window/balcony) and some cable. Not long ago ALDI were selling “active” indoor antennas for about $30-40 bucks, if you can get one and no-go just return.Thanks Alan...but if that is the case, why doesn't Foxtel have any history over the past 6 years of anyone ever having Foxtel in this unit? The wall plate is not Foxtel branded, but Telstra branded. The complex is probably 50 years old, but the reno is a lot more recent - say, a couple of years maximum. Also, Foxtel are telling me that only a couple of people in the last 6 years have ever had Foxtel anywhere in the entire 40-odd apartment complex which is over two separate buildings...why would there be backboned Foxtel cable if no one is using it? Foxtel use Telstra cable to deliver their content - I get that. But if practically no one is using the cable for Foxtel - what ARE they using it for? It doesn't seem to be broadband as I was told only ADSL2+ is available to me...
    There are no visible external antennas, and if all the units have been cabled, why would this one be different? I find it difficult to believe that all the residents are having to rely on rabbit-ears or window antennas simply to get FTA!There are a lot of large metal structures around this area, as well as other frequency-interference objects,so I am surmising that this would be the reason the building has been backboned cabled. But hey - just guessing here... So really - who can I ask about what is actually connected to this address? Foxtel say it's not them and tell me to ask Telstra, Telstra SHOP staff (not the good folk here) are telling me they cant help me in person and I have to call customer service from home,  I don't have a landline or my ADSL connected yet so can only use my mobile for which I have limited service while I wait for the delivery of a 3G home booster thingy. Can anyone tell me to which Telstra department I should be directing my enquiry to?At the moment I have now useless T-Box sitting here begging to be used, which I purchased in good faith on the advice I received from a Telstra provider that I have the necessary and correct connections for it to work! Seeing as they appeared to have access to the information required to check on the service availability to this address and specifically this apartment - who do I need to contact to get more information?At the very least, put me out of my misery - if I have to install an antenna, so be it, but I need to be sure this is the only option available to me before I go through the process of getting landlord, body corporate, aand whoeverelse persmission, not to mention the considerable expense! Please - someone, anyone at Telstra - tell me who I need to contact, to find out once and for all, with absolute certainty what this connection is for!  Sorry if I sound desperate...everyone has been very helpful here so far, but I'm going crazy trying to figure this out!

  • URGENT!!!! How to list users from a content of groups in Quest PowerShell! HELP!!!

    Hi everybody
    I have this script:

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
    Based on what I can gather, you're looking to read in an input file of group names, check each group's membership, and then export that information to a CSV file.
    I don't have the Quest tools, but here's how I'd do this with the AD module:
    Get-Content .\groupList.txt | ForEach {
    $groupName = $_
    Get-ADGroupMember $_ | ForEach {
    $props = @{
    'Group Name'=$groupName
    UserName=$_.SamAccountName
    Name=$_.Name
    DisplayName=(Get-ADUser $_.SamAccountName -Properties DisplayName).DisplayName
    New-Object PsObject -Property $props
    } | Export-Csv .\groupMembers.csv -NoTypeInformation

  • [Athlon64] Noisy sound with onboard coaxial output - k8tneo ... Plz help me

    I have K8t Neo and use onboard sound.
    Analog output sound is great, but spdif (coaxial) out is the problem.
    The sound from spdif is very noisy. Noisy sound in digital system is a little strange, but it's true.
    When I listen to music, I hear "ch~~~~~~" noise sound very clearly.
    When I watch movies encoded by Dobly Digital or DTS, "dddddddddddddddd......." noise makes me crazy.
    I tested an old sound card, Yamaha DS-XG, and it was OK. So I bought a sound card , but it had same problems. I had to sell it.
    I can use Yamaha sound card, but yamaha don't make a driver for it any more.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hi
    Hmm......... not sure why, but could be EMI from PSU or PCI card or Graphic card, even a fan near the Mobo output.
    Did you use same PCI slot for both sound cards?
    Have you set the sound manager for spdif output, and checked no slack connections.
    Good luck

  • Help with my Bran-New Creative Zen Micro Photo. [Questi

    <EM>If you don't want to see the backing of my whole story skip to the bold print at the bottom!</EM>I also want you to know I read the FAQs and searched through some topics like this, but haven't found any asking my question.First of all, I'm new to the forum, but I've been researching Creative's Zen for a long time now. I kept observing each one closely before I purchased a product. I then saw the Zen Micro Photo come out. This one won my attention. I loved this, I quickly searched for reviews and went for the buy for Christmas. I told my dad about it and he was "iffy" on the price, but it was better then the iPod in my opinion.Christmas day came and I opened it. Right away I checked everything out I knew a lot about the menu already and all, but not really how to control it. I checked to make sure everything worked. All systems were go. After listening to the defaults (which I loved) I went to go install the software. I already had Media Player 0 and Adobe, oh and I didn't want the freakin AOL toolbar! Lol, so I installed everything else. It took forever, but I hooked it up and I installed the drivers, but as soon as I plug in the USB connector I see: "A HIGH-SPEED USB device has been plugged into a LOW SPEED USB port.After that, I switched USB ports, btu I got same message. I hit the X and then tried to charge. I got the Lightening Bolt, but no dimming of lights. I found out that this computer is not letting me install any service packs, I'm confused about that.My question:Is there anyway I can charge this mp3 player and download music onto my Zen Micro Photo without Service Pack ? Or did I just pay $250 for a really cool glowing mp3 player to be used as a paperweight? (I love this Zen and I ran the battery dead hoping that would make the charging easier).Help?
    My Specifications:
    My Mp3 Player: Zen Micro Photo (Black)What I tried: Switching USB ports and re-installing Service Pack Software: Not sure how to determine firmware without installing something. I'm on a XP Professional and I'm using the Creative Media Source and Creative Media Toolbox

    Thank you DM for responding. I am expecting problems, but it still won't allow me to charge the Zen Micro Photo or even use the Creative Media Source. I can't upload any songs or any contacts on it. I haven't uploaded anything yet, but it's not reading the USB device. When I run Creative Zen Micro Photo Media Explorer I get this message at the top of the screen: "The device is not connected. Please connect your Zen MicroPhoto to the computer. I can't organize anything or add songs... so it just makes all the programs I downloaded useless and my Creative product unusuable.ONe thing it does do though... whenever I plug in my Zen MIcroPhoto to the USB it turns it on and glows, but only shows my battery at the top with one red line and the green lightening bolt filling the battery up.After leaving it like this for two hours the green moves, but the red bar stays the same size.

    Can anyone help? I've got an adobe account and want to register the Book Box but the number that is on a small sticky lable on the back of the Bookbox which i assumed was the serial number is coming back as invalid.

    Unless that is a new product from Adobe (I say new because I have never heard of Adobe selling anything with that name) you are going to have to contact the actual vendor for help

  • I need help please if you can aid me in my quest to write this code

    I am trying really hard to accomplish this and my head hurts from trying mulitple ideas on the right code.A lottery requires that you select six different numbers from the integers 1 to 49. Write a Java program that will do this for you and generate five sets of six numbers as a result.
    Details:
    For generating random numbers you can use the random() static method of class Math. It returns a double so you will need to cast it as an integer. If you set the range to 49, you can generate a random number between 1 and 49 through:
    number = (int) ( range * Math.random() ) + 1;
    Note that you need 5 sets of numbers and in each set you have should have six different numbers. There should not be duplicate numbers within each set. Of course the same number can occur in multiple sets, but within the same set of 6 numbers it should only occur once, if at all.
    Here is an example of a valid set of numbers: 5, 41, 3, 9, 22, 30
    Here is an example of an invalid set of numbers: 15, 8, 19, 33, 8, 21
    It is invalid because the number 8 appears twice.
    This is the dilema the code I have so far (I know it is not much) is import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.util.Random;
    public class Lottery
    public static void main(String[] args)
              int[] numbers = new int[6];
    number = (int) (range 49 Math.random() ) + 1;
    am I on the right track totally wrong or???? Please help me and god bless

    Yeahhhhh, don't do that...Why not?because you butchered an otherwise simple process by the whole generic list with 50 numbers and sorting mess.
    java.util.Random. <-- learn how to use it.Well, please explain how you would better do it using java.util.Random then?
    Random r = new Random();
    int[] vals = new int[6];
    for(int i = 0; i < vals.length; i++ )
        vals[i] = (r.nextInt(49) + 1);

  • HELP! ZEN questi

    Can anyone tell me how to organize/search for things on my ZEN? I just have the plain ZEN. Thanks for any help you can give!!

    What do you mean by Organize ? Basically when you add your music to the Zen, make sure that all the music files have ID3 tags which contains information such as song title, artiste and album. Once you have that, you can navigate to?'Music' on the player, here you can browse via Album, Artists or Genres. The lists would be sorted via alphabetical orders so you can use the Down button to navigate down the list. To speed through the list by jumping to the next alphabet, you use the right button to where the list of alphabets are, you can then use the down button to navigate through the alphabet. When you hit the alphabet you want, use the left button to move back to the list. Hit the center select button to select and subsequently play that album or artists.

  • Help With Some Warranty questi

    I have a question in reference to the warranty on any ipod. MY ipod has 4 more months with its warranty so therefore I have to pay for shipping. So I bought an apple care protection care plan for it so its warranty could be extended and I could receive repairs for free. My ipod is giving me trouble now and I want to send it in so I was wondering if I would have the one year warranty on the ipod that apple sends me.

    The iPod they send you is going to be a replacement. It will take over the remaining warranty coverage of the original iPod. Basically, they'll take your Applecare Protection Plan and carry it over to the new iPod for you... and it will still be covered for 2 years from your original iPod's purchase date.

  • Need help solving a minor delema....battery quest

    Hello-
    I received my Zen Micro only two days ago, I am very happy with it, yes....
    but there is one little thing that has been eating away at my brain....
    I wonder how I should recharge my battery!
    I know I need an adapter, I'm not stupid...buut...
    The Zen Micro instruction booklet says 'Connect your player to <EM>the</EM> power adapter.'
    This gives me the impression that an adapter should come with the product...
    If it should, I haven't noticed it....
    So my question <EM>is</EM>....
    <EM>Should</EM> a power adapter come with my product, or do you need to buy one specifically for the Zen Micro?
    Also, would it work with a regular, Walmart-bought power adapter, or are they not powerful enough?
    (You see, I have a number of them laying around the house...)
    I would like to know the answer to this soon.... I do not want to be stuck with an un-usable devise....
    Thank you,
    =Sumie=
    :robotmad::robotmad::robotmad::robotmad::robotmad: :robotmad::robotmad::robotmad::robotmad::robotmad:

    In your case, the power adaptor is the USB cable the ZM comes with. The newer retail ZMs come cheaper, but at the cost of a missing power outlet charger.
    There are some problems to be avoided with USB charging. (search the forums).
    I would resiously recommend either getting the newest .x or the newest 2.x firmware from the Creative download pages and reflashing your player with it.
    Cheers,
    Jan.

  • I wrote an exam and this was one of the quest can someone please help.thx

    The International Cricket Council has employed you to write a JAVA APPLICATION program to calculate batting averages. The Batsman with the highest batting average is going to get the BATSMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD.
    Write a java program that
         uses an array to store 5 batting scores
         has a method to calculate the batting average and
         then creates 2 objects (i.e. 2 batsman) and determine which batsman has the higher average (this will be done in the main program).
    Ensure that your program is properly structured.
    No unnecessary code to be done in the main method.
    Enter 5 batting scores for Batsman 1 [20, 30, 20, 30, 20]
    Average : 60
    Enter batting scores for Batsman 2 [20, 40, 20, 40, 10]
    Average: 65
    BATSMAN 2 IS BATSMAN OF THE YEAR!
    Save this application program as: BATSMAN Java

    Hi Shri-Babaji, This is one of the question which I
    answered in my exams and was asking you guys sothat I
    could verify how I had fared. I am still new at Java
    and thought I could ask but if that what you guys
    think than sorry for asking!Ok, now you're saying you 'answered' it in the exam, or you are the one creating an exam? If you're creating an exam, I already tried to apologize for my remarks, but if in fact you are 'answering' an exam, then my original reply still holds, and this would be speaking for most of the community on these forums.
