Htt Xp And Hal....

THIS IS A COPY OF A THREAD I WAS POSTIN AN ANSWER TO, BUT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BENEFIT A WIDER AUDIENCE.(0X0000000A)
hi, i have found an interesting concern about windows xp and HTT.
the HAL is decided on install, you can install with ht enabled, but if you dissable this in the bios later, your pc will still use multiprocessor HAL which will make the pc run hotter..
this is due to hal is non changeable by the operator and is only configured on install of xp.(HTT dissabled= uniprocessor HAL, HTT Enabled= Multiprocessor HAL)
so you install xp with HT on, and later dissable it due to coruption or what ever.. your pc will still run the HAL MULTIPROCESSOR DRIVERS and no longer enter sleep mode where the cpu will slow down at low useage state causing it to constantly consume power, thus heating the cpu more than when HTT is enabled.lol.
but, there is another twist in this little problem.
windows xp (before sp1 was added) installed all the correct HAL drivers for intel processors, BUT SP1 over writes these with the wrong ones!! namely ntoskrnl.exe
and windows have no fix for this, only a work around. which is
1. wait for the new service pack.
2. re-install xp with/ without HTT enabled, which ever you require...
BUT!!! if you have a version of xp, or xp pro with sp 1 on it, it won't matter, because the kernal drivers are wrong..
how i laugh...
now this doesn't answer my problem of "how the hell do i get xp to run HTT, but it does let me know that microsoft are at the bottom of it all...

well... i said it many times before... but it worked...
i now have ht enabled and a nice and quiet pc...i feel liberated..
i can now say i have the pc i paid for..
sorry msi for doubting you
and reilly, you rock.
thank's for keepin me cool and thank's for the offer of help..
i may still need it tho,lol it has done this to me before.
today it works.. 2morrow.. back to the drawing board.
but as for now.. i love my nice and quiet pc...

  • Dbus and hal groups, the wiki.

    Hey,
    I was just reading though the beginners wiki and saw about the dbus and hal groups.
    Should I add my user account to them? The wiki said about adding a user to the groups via usermod..
    usermod -aG audio,video,floppy,lp,optical,network,storage,wheel,dbus,hal USERNAME
    But I installed hal via reading our hal wiki and it says..
    For dbus and hal to function properly, local user accounts must be members of the following groups: optical, storage. To achieve this, open a terminal and type the following commands as root:
    # gpasswd -a username optical
    # gpasswd -a username storage
    Which I have done but it doesn't mention about the hal and dbus groups, so is just adding my account to optical and storage sufficient?
    Or will adding my account to the hal and dbus groups give me any benefit or cause harm ?

    Your user doesn't need to be in the hal and dbus groups.
    Edit: I fixed the info in the wiki.

    udev and hal behave unstable in my laptop.When I boot my computer,it sometimes take lots of time to finish,but sometimes it fast.For example, sometimes in "udev event" stage I wait  10s ,but sometimes I only wait 3s.So it is when load hal.
    I also discover my archlinux run faster when it boot quickly then when it boot slowly.
    what is the problem?

  • VMware Workstation 7.1, dbus and hal

    Older thread on the subject: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=230142
    I'm running VMware Workstation 7.1 in Xfce 4.8, with dbus running and hal not.
    I get:
    $ vmware
    [ snip ]
    process 30387: Attempt to remove filter function 0x7f591ecdb320 user data 0xa2b452, but no such filter has been added
    If I either stop dbus (which breaks alot of other things), or start hal along with dbus, it works.
    dbus hal => VMware works
    !dbus !hal => VMware works
    dbus !hal => VMware doesn't work (although this is the setup I'd like, dbus without hal).
    Any ideas here?  I'd really rather not have to start hal.

  • [SOLVED]xfce 4.8 and hal

    Hey all!
    I just recently did a fresh install of Arch Linux on my main desktop, and right now I am currently trying to install xfce 4.8 but I noticed its trying to pull in hal. I thought Xfce migrated off of hal to using GIO/GVFS/Thunar-Volman? I asked in #xfce irc channel and they said that xfce 4.8 doesn't need hal any more. So I am really confused. I was hoping to not needing hal on my system any more lol.
    Also, do I still need gamin installed?

  • [SOLVED!] On USB drives, problems with non-English chars and HAL

    Hello,
    I am having a problem with non-English caracters (áãàçéẽê...) on files stored on my USB drive.
    On Windows they're created with the correct name. But on Linux the files have the non-English characteres replaced by '?' and are not accessible.
    If I manuallly mount the drives using 'mount -o iocharset=utf8 /dev/sdb1 /media/usbdisk' the characters are OK, so I think I just need to get HAL to pass the correct parameters to mount. However I don't know how to do that, and haven't found any good solution.
    I tried to build a custom kernel setting the default charset as UTF-8 and it didn't work.
    Any ideas? I'm using x86-64, HAL 0.5.13-3 and my locale is pt-BR.UTF-8.
    Thanks!
    EDIT: Actually, this is not a HAL problem, but a problem with 'exo'. For the solution, I edited /etc/xdg/xfce4/mount.rc and added iocharset=utf8 to the [vfat] category.

    I don't use Thunar presently, but I looked in the Thunar Volume Manager doc and I didn't find anything to change the mount options of removable drives. I am not quite sure if it's possible or not. Maybe someone using it can tell for sure.
    But if it is not possible to change the mount options, a possible solution is to disable the Thunar Volume Manager plugin and to use something else more configurable to manage the automount function.
    Personally I use the halevt package from AUR which uses configuration files in the xml format.
    It's not so easy to use but is highly configurable.
    But there exists other tools also.
    I can help you with halevt if you choose that way...

  • Synaptics Track Pad and HAL

    Hello,
    I just installed Arch on a new Acer Aspire One 751h.  I have used Arch before, but haven't installed a graphical environment since hwd was recommended.  Anyway, I got HAL to autodetect all of my hardware correctly (as far as I can tell, so far).  I don't even have an xorg.conf file.  Nice, progress.
    But I can't get my Synaptic track pad to work at all.
    Here's the relevant config stuff:
    /etc/rc.d (not the whole thing):
    MODULES=(acpi_cpufreq ath5k pciehp r8169 !snd_pcsp uvcvideo)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond sshd hal alsa)

    <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton2" type="string">2</merge>
    </match>
    </device>
    </deviceinfo>
    It doesn't seem like HAL recognizes my configuration data at all.  (Notice "TapButton2" is different below)  But on the other hand, HAL is aware that a touch pad is installed.  (I checked, and it matches dmesg's report, so it is finding real hardware)
    lshal:
    udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_AUX1_port_logicaldev_input'

    linux.subsystem = 'input' (string)
    linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio2/input/input5/event4' (string)
    But in the end, the track pad doesn't work -- no matter what i do:

    This was pretty dumb in the end.  As the logs show, the SynPS2 touchpad was detected correctly.  I just had to turn it "on", with a special Function key combination.

  • AutoMounting / Udev and HAL

    Hey fellow Archers,
    Sorry if this is a bit of a Noob Question.
    But I am having issues with automounting usb drives that etc.
    I am running eeepc 1000 and everything works fine out of the box.  But I have shown Arch to a friend of mine and we can't gain access to the usb drive with free.desktop permission error.  I have read the wiki and forum posts.  However I have found the are for much older versions of HAL and Udev, and they are contradictory.
    Please if you could help me clarfiy a solutions.  Should Udev handle to mounting and permission rule or should I add HAL policy ?.
    If HAL if the best solution could be so kind as to provide a example of Hal policy as my previous attempt to edited HAL has failed.
    Kind Regards

    whoa! either way, that's good to know.
    here's my list - syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa. can i do without any of those? would putting @ in front of any of them make a difference? am i missing something key?
    i appreciate the answers. i try to read about this stuff, but it can be so foreign, at times, i still have no sense of judgment about it.
    You can disable daemons with ! like !crond and see if you are losing functionality in everyday usage. Check what each daemon does, crond is for task scheduling, so if u dont have tasks, u can disable it and re-enable it if u want to add tasks sometime in future.
    daemons like alsa, crond can boot in background. even my network is background
    I would recommend having Arch CD nearby just so you can CD boot and chroot if somehow (unlikely) the system gets screwed,
    besides, u would have got better answers if u were more specific on system usage profile,

    Dbus says "unable to find UID et GID for user dbus" .
    Unfortunatly, i'm not very confortable with dbus server to understand the error myself..

  • Upgrade quality and Hal - again

    Upgrading Arch is a hit or miss operation. Usually the kernel is not panicking, usually the settings in Firefox and other apps are carried over, quite frequently even Hal is working after an upgrade. Too often, though, this is not true.
    On my system, Hal has intermittently been working fine, partly or not at all after upgrades over the last year. Today it stopped working again, so I searched this site and found this suggestion for the .xinitrc file:
    exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session ck-launch-session startkde
    This helped me to at least get access to a dvd, but not to unmount/eject it. Dolphin displays a msg about the device being busy, and here are some tidbits from the command line:
    [pelagos@blabla ~]$ umount /media/Trav_20091128
    umount: /media/Trav_20091128 is not mounted (according to mtab)
    [pelagos@blabla ~]$ ls /media
    Trav_20091128 cd dvd fl
    [pelagos@blabla ~]$ eject
    /sbin/umount.hal: Unmounting /media/Trav_20091128 failed: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Busy: umount: /media/Trav_20091128 : device is busy.
    eject: unmount of `/media/Trav_20091128 ' failed
    [pelagos@blabla ~]$
    Something in the system is obviously aware of the mounted dvd and, funnily, after several unsuccessful tries, the dvd is magically released and ejected. As if a time-lock had been set...
    The latest upgrade also changed all the fonts on my system, including Firefox, and Firefox has even lost my passwords. Not exactly what you want if you happen to have work to do...

    then I had this error:
    ghc: /usr/bin/haddock existist in filesystem

    well, I deleted it, and went for the next (last) step of the recipe
    pacman -Su

  • Initscripts default rc.conf DAEMONS line and HAL

    Hello,
    Some application error messages recently caused me to realize that after setting up a new machine I was not starting the HAL daemon.
    Shouldn't this daemon be in the default DAEMONS=() line of rc.conf, as installed by the initscripts package?
    I started to flag the package "out of date" but I wasn't sure if this was the appropriate action for this issue/question.
    android

    I was refering to flaging the initscripts package, not the hal package.
    It's my impression that udev hot plugging as well as kde and gnome infrastructure (therefore all of the applications, not just if that's your desktop) all rely on hal at runtime.
    I still haven't quite run it to ground, but I also believe that the arch boot proccess uses hal as part of hardware discovery.
    So I think quite a bit of stuff depends on it and that it's a default in arch installations.
    Given this, it seemed it would be reasonable if it were included in the DAEMONS line by default, or at least if configuration dependent on it is selected at system installation time.
    In short, it seems like initscripts is "out of date" by not supporting hal out of the box.
    This issue is related to knowing which of the, ever growing list of, groups to which a user should be added in order to have access to the systems hardware. But that's another post.
    This is just my impression as a user. I'm eager to learn more, especially about the arch setup and boot process.
    Thanks for your reply...
