HTTP server: ORDS or Tomcat or Apache

Our current APEX configuration uses Oracle OHS with mod_plsql on Linux. In this situation, it is clear that the browser connects to OHS, makes a HTTP request and OHS hands that request to the APEX engine in the Oracle Database via mod_plsql which satisfies the request and returns a response back to OHS and back to the browser.
When using ORDS in standalone mode, the browser connects to ORDS which uses JDBC to connect to the APEX engine in the Oracle Database which satisfies the request and returns a response back to ORDS and back to the browser.
Questions:
1. When ORDS is deployed in a Apache Tomcat container, I am not sure I understand how the data flows. Who acts as the web server in this case, ORDS or the Coyote HTTP connector inside Tomcat? What component connects to the APEX engine?
2. When Apache and Kerberos are thrown into the mix as shown in Single Sign-On for APEX applications using Kerberos  same questions, what component does what exactly?
Thanks

Tim - Thanks for jumping in. Let me make sure I understand.
1. I followed the instructions on http://spnego.sourceforge.net . A SPN for the Tomcat server has not yet been  added to AD but since the default filter-mapping applies only to *.jsp I thought it wouldn't affect Tomcat as long as I don't request URLs ending in  JSP. But to my surprise, even the Tomcat homepage at http://host:8080 gives a HTTP 500 error and the logs/localhost.yyyy-mm-dd.log has the error
18-Nov-2014 09:24:30.286 SEVERE [http-nio-8080-exec-1] org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapperValve.invoke Servlet.service() for servlet [jsp] in context with path [] threw exception [GSSException: Failure unspecified at GSS-API level (Mechanism level: Checksum failed)] with root cause
java.security.GeneralSecurityException: Checksum failed
Why is this? Is this just the way Tomcat works i.e. all filters should successfully initialize for Tomcat to even come up, regardless of the URL requested?
2. What is the syntax for the <url-pattern> command? Does it do regular expression matching on the full URL, including the query string? To match all APEX URLs, shouldn't it be /f?p= instead of just /f ? What about accept processing? The URL for that is /apex/wwv_flow.accept, should this be added to the spnego filter too? I didn't see any documentation on this on the SPNEGO SourceForge site
3. When you say "we simply setup a second listener that did not enforce authentication", can you clarify how you did this exactly? Did you copy apex.war to, say, apex-public.war and use http://host:port/apex-public/... to serve public content? But if the SPNEGO filter applies to the entire Tomcat instance, wouldn't it apply to this as well? Maybe this goes back to my questioin #2 above i.e. did you specify the url-pattern as /apex/f?p= so it will skip the public webapp?
4. IMHO the SPNEGO filter works very well but it appears to be very fragile, even a minor configuration error results in a HTTP 404 or HTTP 500 and troubleshooting is a pain. Is it really recommended to use this in a Production environment?
5. Yes, Waffle does look like a easy, plug-and-play solution but it doesn't work on Linux so we would need to install Tomcat/Waffle/ORDS on a Windows server. Will look into this. Thanks.
Thanks

    Hi, I was wondering if there was a plugin available for apache on a win 2000. I

    You can find mod_wl_20.so in $WLS_HOME/bin/apache20 from 6.1.

    For Apache 2.x I think you use LoadModule instead of AddModule. That's what

  • How to integrate Oracle Http Server with Weblogic

    Weblogic supports Apache web server 2.0 and 2.2 to be a proxy server. Oracle Http Server (OHS) is based on Apache 2.0. I am trying to configure Weblogic to use OHS that comes with OAS install as proxy on Linux environment. I am unable to get the WLS plugin for Apache to work with OHS. When I tried to start the OHS, I got the following errors:
    /oracle/product/10.1.3.1/OracleAS_3/Apache/Apache/bin/apachectl startssl: execing httpd
    Syntax error on line 1125 of /oracle/product/10.1.3.1/OracleAS_3/Apache/Apache/conf/httpd.conf:

    I checked the library, and I found in several places, such as /usr/lib.
    The following is the configuration that I put in http.conf file:
    <IfModule mod_weblogic.c>
    WebLogicCluster 127.0.0.1:7001
    MatchExpression /AIP
    </IfModule>
    <Location /weblogic>
    SetHandler weblogic-handler
    WebLogicCluster 127.0.0.1:7001
    DebugConfigInfo ON
    PathTrim /weblogic
    </Location>
    Anybody knows how to fix this?
    Thanks.

    You're right: Weblogic supports Apache web server 2.0 and 2.2 to be a proxy server but you are using Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.1.0 which is based on Apache *1.3* as you can read in "Oracle® HTTP Server Administrator's Guide"
    10g (10.1.3.1.0) - Part Number B28948-01 - 1.1 Oracle HTTP Server Features, right under "Based on Apache - HTTP v1.1 Support" at
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/web.1013/b28948/overview.htm#i1008837.
    As far as I know, the only OHS based on Apache *2.0* is available as a standalone release: "Oracle HTTP Server (Apache 2.0) (10.1.3.3.0) for Linux x86" - 32bit. You can download it from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle11g/111060_linuxsoft.html (as_101330_apache2_lnx.zip).
    I've tested it successfully.

  • Mod_osso behavior differences with 10gR3 Oracle HTTP Server 2

    We have an install of standalone 10gR3 Oracle HTTP Server 2 (i.e. the Apache 2 version), and have noticed that the behavior of mod_osso is different than the regular 10gR3 Oracle HTTP Server (i.e. the Apache 1 version).
    We use the following in our mod_osso.conf:
    <Location /somepath>
    AuthType Basic
    require valid-user
    </Location>
    First Difference: With OHS 2, when we go to /somepath, we get the error "missing AuthName" in the Apache logs.
    So, we set an AuthName. Now, our mod_osso.conf looks like this:
    <Location /OnDemand>
    AuthType Basic
    AuthName "Oracle Single Sign On"
    require valid-user
    </Location>
    Second Difference: Now, we we go to /somepath, Apache returns a 401, which causes the browser to prompt for credentials! We can enter anything we want in the dialog, and everything will continue as normal (i.e. redirects to the Oracle SSO Server to prompt for credentials, etc).
    So, our question is: Why these behavior differences in 10gR3 OHS 2? It almost seems as if it's using an old 9i mod_osso!
    Thanks,
    - Bill

    Okay, we figured it out.
    Apparently, the three "LoadModule mod_auth*" lines in OHS 2 httpd.conf need to be commented out.
    Now mod_osso is working exactly as with OHS 1.

  • Apache HTTP server and Tomcat integration using mod_jk

    Hi, I'm trying to get Apache version 2 Server running with Tomcat 7 as the Java Servlet container (I'll be using Solr as the webapp next). Followed the instructions in the wiki articles Tomcat and Apache and Tomcat.
    The applications work fine separately. It's only when I modify the httpd.conf files as instructed that I get this error when I restart httpd and tomcat. This problem seems identical to this topic although the user that posted it does't know how he fixed the problem.

  • How to install Soap on the (Apache) Oracle HTTP Server

    Hi,
    Does anyone know how to install SOAP on the Oracle HTTP Server? I downloaded a soap version (it seems that the standard version comes without SOAP) from the xml.apache.org site and followed the installation instructions as far as I could (only Tomcat is described). However, no 'soaping'!!! Maybe I'm overlooking something because I cannot imagine that it should be difficult.
    Thanks in advance!
    Hans

    Hans, the SOAP implementation is part of OC4J. You get it out of the box. Check out how to use the out-of-the-box implementation in the tutorials on Web services with Oracle9i JDeveloper at:
    http://otn.oracle.com/tech/webservices/htdocs/series/content.html
    These tutorials/samples use the implementation of SOAP/WSDL that Oracle calls J2EE Web Services and this is the long term direction of Oracle's Web services implementation. This implementation is what Oracle will be evolving to Sun's Java Web Services Developer Pack as it finalizes into J2EE 1.4.
    If you want to use Oracle/Apache SOAP, this too is included in OC4J but its support is being deprecated in future releases of Oracle9iAS in favour of the J2EE Web Services implementation. To find it, check out the OC4J/soap/webapps/ directory for the soap.ear file (it is in a slightly different spot if you are using the full Oracle9iAS R2 but still within the soap directory structure. Simply add <application name="soap" path="../../../soap/webapps/soap.ear" auto-start="true"/> to your OC4J server.xml and <web-app application="soap" name="soap" root="/soap" /> to your OC4J http-web-site.xml, re-start and away you go.
    Finally, just to be sure, SOAP support in Oracle9iAS did not appear until 1.0.2.2.x and higher. If using 1.0.2.1 or less, you are correct, there is no SOAP support.
    Mike.
    Most folks that try out the J2EE Web Services find it is pretty easy to use so

  • Cannot connect to database with servlet thru apache http server / vhosts

    Hello,
    I have an application that works perfectly when Tomcat 5.5 is running stand-alone, but when I run Tomcat and Apache HTTP Server together, I get an error when trying to connect to the database. Servlets are working fine otherwise. Connection pooling is setup and working fine for Tomcat stand-alone. With the Apache server, I'm running Virtual Hosts.
    My guess is that I need something in the host block of server.xml about the context.xml where the db resource pool is defined. This is what I have so far in server.xml:
    <Host name="www.mydomain.com" debug="0" appBase="d:/WebApps/mydomain"
    unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true">
    <Context path="" docBase="" debug="0"/>
    </Host>
    Or the problem may be caused by something else entirely. Does anybody have any suggestions? Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Logan

    A little help? Anybody?
    I can connect to the database with Tomcat stand-alone, but not with Tomcat integrated with Apache. I have seen this problem described elsewhere, but no solution has been found.

  • Installing and Configuring the Apache HTTP Server Plug-In

    Hi,
    I am using WL10.3 in Linux machine.
    I have an environment where I have a single WL server in a domain that is deployed with the web-application
    And I have another domain where I have two managed servers in a cluster that is deployed with the business.
    Now, I want to configure a Apache HTTP server to make it work as a proxy along with the weblogic.
    In my current scenario, the stand alone server proxies the req to the cluster and that is defined in a jndi.properties.
    Now, what should I do if I want to use the Apache
    I have the following questions:
    1. Forget about my env, generally how can I install and configure Apache HTTP plug-in?
    I see we already having libproxy_61.so file inside /bea/wlserver_10.3/server/plugin/linux/i686
    Do i need to install the patch even then as told in http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/security/wls-security/2793.html?
    2. While am adding the lines in httpd.conf ,
    LoadModule weblogic_module modules/mod_wl_22.so
    Should I put ibproxy_61.so instead of mod_wl_22.so in this line?
    3. Just by configuring the proxy, the session replication and load balancing will be ensured?
    4.And for my configuration as stated at the beginning few lines, what can be the best architecture?
    Your help is really appreciated.

  • Configuring Apache HTTP Server with Oracle Weblogic Server plugin

    Hello friends,
    I have a scenario of OIM 9.1.0.2 on Oracle Application Server 11g and Weblogic Server Apache HTTP Server.
    Oracle WebLogic Server is configured in cluster (node1 and node2), also use the Oracle Weblogic Server plugin for integration with Apache.
    One of the tests is to lose one of the nodes for the apache plugin redirects the node that has less overhead.
    When the mode is node1 and node2 stop start mode and try to access the management console of Oracle Identity Manager, the plugin sometimes redirects to the other active node, and on another occasion shows the oracle management console identity manager without the colors of the basic look and feel.
    Deputy of the Apache HTTP Server log, do you expect your comments to solve this case?

    "One of the tests is to lose one of the nodes for the apache plugin redirects the node that has less overhead."
    Note that the plug-in does a round robin load balancing, for example, in the case of three server (1,2,3) it does 1-2-3-1-2-3-1...
    with server 3 going down it does 1-2-1-2-1...
    An example configuration (with SSL off) looks as follows:
    LoadModule weblogic_module   "/home/oracle/weblogic12.1.1/apache/modules/mod_wl.so"
    <IfModule weblogic_module>
         ConnectTimeoutSecs 10
         ConnectRetrySecs 2
         DebugConfigInfo ON
         WLSocketTimeoutSecs 2
         WLIOTimeoutSecs 300
         Idempotent ON
         FileCaching ON
         KeepAliveSecs 20
         KeepAliveEnabled ON
         DynamicServerList ON
         WLProxySSL OFF
    </IfModule>
    <Location /LoadTest6>
         SetHandler weblogic-handler
         WebLogicCluster 172.31.0.175:7002,172.31.0.113:7003
    </Location>Also see the complete example here: http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=7795
    "the plugin sometimes redirects to the other active node"
    This is somewhat strange, do you have session binding turned off?
    "and on another occasion shows the oracle management console identity manager without the colors of the basic look and feel."
    This could happen due to mime types (not really sure just a hunch). Here is a general story on this concept: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Properly_Configuring_Server_MIME_Types
    and the apache module: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_mime.html

  • Integrating Apache Http Server with Streaming Server

    Hi,
    How to integrate my Apache Http Server with a Darwin Streaming Server or any server?
    Any links are really appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Your question has nothing whatsoever to do with JSP, JSTL, or java. Locking.

  • HTTP Server under stand-alone-apache new thread

    Sorry I closed the other thread too soon thinking I had a solution by creating an alias for libdb.so.2. ButI was mistaken.
    So once again:
    I made an installation of Oracle HTTP-Server from the Companion-CD Release 10.2 for Linux 64bit in a Suse Enterprise 10 SP1 environment.
    Installation was successfu. HTTP-Server now starts without error messages.
    But if I try to include the plsql.conf in the http_conf_local of the stand_alone-apache version 2.0 I get the message
    'cannot load modplsql.so. Wrong ELF class. ELFCLASS32.
    In the meantime I have learned that you can use 32bit-classes under 64bit Linux.
    But do I have to do to get them accepted?
    Thanks in advance for further help.
    Christine

    Well, after some more research I ended up doing the following:
    New aim is to have a fully working oracle HTTP-Server beneath another Apache and redirecting incoming URLs with /pls/ to the Oracle-HTTP-Server
    -remove all includes from the other Apache pointing to my HTTP-Server
    - correct file owner mismatches by giving the oracle user the ownership on all files within the oracle_home-path with a chown-command
    - correct file group mismatches by relating all files within the oracle_home_path with group dba using a chgrp-command
    After that the opmn-demon was able to start with ./opmnctl start
    Trying to start HTTP-Server with ./opmnctl startproc ias-component=HTTP_Server failed, but now I got logs to investigate.
    -disabled two lines in httpd.conf:
    #LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/mod_rewrite.so
    #LoadModule dbm_auth_module libexec/mod_auth_dbm.so
    then HTTP_Server starts.
    Why it can't load the mentioned modules I do not know, they are present where they are supposed to be.
    Redirect the outside listening apache to my HTTP-Server by adding into it's http_conf_local:
    ProxyPass /pls/ http://localhost:7780/pls/
    ProxyPassReverse /pls/ http://localhost:7780/pls/
    ProxyPass /htdocs/ http://localhost:7780/htdocs/
    ProxyPassReverse /htdocs/ http://localhost:7780/htdocs/

  • Policy Agent 2.2 for Apache HTTP Server

    hi,
    I'm trying to configure Policy Agent 2.2 for apache http server.
    The agent seems to be installed properly, in fact when I access the protected resource, I get the Access Manager login page.
    Then I log into access manager, but I'm redirected to an error page.
    Looking in log files I can see:
    agent's "amAgent" log file:

    I tried to change the name of the agent either in its AMAgent.properties or in Access Manager "Agents" configuration page.
    I also used "crypt_util" to generate a new passoword, but nothing seems to happen.
    Where should I look to get more info about this problem? Specific log file?
    Is it due to wrong name/id/password of the agent? I really checked them many times...
    Thanks
    Fabio

    I think the error message "Application user ID is not valid" is pretty self evident.
    Log into the amconsole and go to the root realm/organization. Make sure the Agent profile exists and reset the password again to know value. If you created the agent profile in a sub realm/organization, you will need to make sure the subrealm/organization is set in the AMAgent.properties since the default value is / for the root realm/organization. Update the AMAgent.properties file will the Agent ID and the password generated by the crypt_it tool (com.sun.am.policy.am.username, com.sun.am.policy.am.password)
    If that doesn't work, check the amApplication debug log and then look at the ldap server access logs to see why the auth bind failed.
