HTTPS in Safari 3.1.2

Since the upgrade to 3.1.2 I have had difficulty with https site access. Occasionally (about 1 in 20 goes) I can connect but usually get a server not responding error. It's not related to any specific site as it is happening with PayPal, my bank and secure checkout on various shopping sites (tried a few at random to be sure)
I've repaired permissions on the drive still no good. I've also added DNS to my network configuration in case of weird timeout.

I'm having the same problem. It seems to be any https:// site. Had to use Firefox to join the discussions. When I try an https site I get the following:
Safari can’t open the page “https://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/OrderStatus?mid=appleglobal%2C applestoreWW%2Capplestoreus%2CapplestoreUSconsum&appleStoreSessionKey=0X4Y1qzp5b MA2fIJEUD1c0280cc400924&csname=consumer”. The error was: “Operation could not be completed. (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 306.)” (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork:306) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
I think this started after an update around 10 days ago but can't be sure.
Help! This is irritating. Can't really use Safari.

  • Why can I only load https pages, Safari and Maverick?

    Hi
I can't load http web pages in Safari, but can load https pages. Have similar problem with Opera, but no problem loading http web pages on my iPad. The problem started yesterday and is on my iMac.  So am guessing that it is a mavericks setting issue?
Any suggestions on what to do?

    Hi all
Uninstalling Sophos from my computer resolved this problem.

  • Problem when switching from https to http on Safari

I am using a Safari browser and try to switch from https to http within the same web application.
The Safari browser is configured so that on Safari->Preferences->Security the check box "Ask before sending a non-secure form to a secure website" is checked.
When using the Safari browser in my web application and going from an https page to an http page, the browser shows an (expected) dialog box asking the user whether he wants to send a non secure form. Clicking Ok (twice) causes the following problematic dialog box to appear :
    Safari can't open the specified address;
Safari can't open "(null)" because Mac OS X doesn't
recognise Internet addresses starting with "(null)"
How can I avoid this problem without having to uncheck the above mentioned check box in Safari->Preferences->security.

I have somehow a similar problem, too. My site is in https upon login which maintains some session data. One of the features of my site is the file upload (servlet) which does some batch processing. Since my https session terminates(timeout)upon uploading, I resorted to switching the link to an http session using
    File Upload
When I do "session.getAttribute('data')" in my servlet after being called by the "upload.jsp", a NullPointerException is thrown at that particular line.
    My question:
    1. Upon uploading of file/data via https, is there a maximum bytes that it can only process? My file is just less than 1MB and it terminates the session. How do I go about it? Should I switch it then to an http?
    2. If I switch from https to an http session, SSL session data can not be retrieved from an http session?
    Thanks!

  • Support for HTTPS with safari actions?

I'm trying to set up a workflow to grab the current page, then parse out the links from it, then filter for one specific link, then go to that link. Unfortunately, the current page is HTTPS, so when I go to step 2, I get 401s back. If I've saved the username and password for access to the server on my keychain, is there a way I can get this to work?

  • Safari 5.0.5 (6533.21.1) - Lost ability to browse "https" urls, "http" fine

Bizarre occurrence in Safari for me that I was hoping someone may have come across before:
Tonight for some reason it will not accept any https url whatsoever - it produces the following error:
can't open the page  <https://url> The error is: “The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1) Please choose Safari > Report Bugs to Apple, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message
I've not installed anything recently or made any config changes.  All I do is stay up-to-date with the software updates from Apple.
I've tried moving the app to the Trash, rebooting and then re-installing but with no luck
I tried restoring a previous version of Safari (5.0.4) from early April Time Machine version but still had the same problem.  Wondering if there are files outwith the Safari App that may be the cause and not the app itself.
I have checked that my firewall and content filtering allow access - (this is the unchanged config I mention above) - and they do and am accessing this discussion site (ironically https so Safari couldn't get to it after my initial Google search) from Firefox.
I've nothing against Firefox as a browser but I was happy enough with Safari and would like to keep using it.
In trawling the web I couldn't see anything that directly matched what I was experiencing.
If anyone has any hints or tips that might help I'd be really grateful.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Mac OS X (10.5.2)  <---   your profile.
Which Mac OS X are you running?
If you haven't tried, reinstall Safari.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070
    Then repair disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.  If you see any warnings re: SUID messages, they can be safely ignored, information here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US

  • Safari cannot create secure connection with certain websites

I have OS X 10.10 with every available updates, and Safari's currently unable to 'establish secure connection' with some site I'm trying to connect, most disturbing being the whole Steam network (store/support.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, etc). IE (via Bootcamp), Chrome (both standalone and integrated into Steam client) and Firefox have no problem doing so.
Considering sometime before the in Steam browser indicated the site as insecure (a red lock icon with a cross, typically used to indicate bad cert) for a short time, and hearing of certs issued to gov agencies for man in the middle, I compared the cert for store.steampowered.com/login (which, in contrary to most content on that domain, forces a secure connection) and this discussions.apple.com. Well Firefox and IE do show a normal grey lock icon without organization name, and Chrome admits the website's ownership is unverified (in details, it says ownership is verified by the CA but there's no public verification record; the secure setting of that site has outdated, too) despite having Valve's name and green lock icon. So the cert could be a fake since it's an ordinary (I guess?) cert from a EV authority (DigiCert High Assurance EV CA-1 in this case). The certificate shown from Chrome is totally fine (not a single red cross in the chain), though.
Well there're other https resources Safari fails to create a secure connection with every now and then. I just forgot/ am unable to test them with other browsers (Sometimes it's not the page itself that can't be retrieved via https, but some resource it loads. Sadly I only know how to use Inspector in Safari, though I'm sure other browsers have similar functions, too). I suspect Safari just refuses such certificates (or the AES_128_CBC method maybe) while other browsers accept it. Is there an override for this?
Weird enough, https://ev-root.digicert.com/ has grey lock on Firefox and Safari. Seems overriding is the only workaround.
As a side note, my Safari freezes upon loading PayPal, being ir-responsive for tens of seconds on every activity such as clicking a link. For most of duration of the freeze no high CPU usage is monitored, though ocspd does sometimes take 50% or so, and the web process bursts into 100% immediately before unfreezing. Guess Yosemite has some issues with TLS on the system level.

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are several possible causes for it.
Back up all data, then take each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time
Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
    Check the box marked
              Set date and time automatically
if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemCACertificates.keychain
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open. The dialog should show "You can only read" in the Sharing & Permissions section.
    Repeat with this line:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
If instead of the Info dialog, you get a message that either file can't be found, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it by pressing command-V. Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 3
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
              File ▹ Add Keychain
from the menu bar and add the following items:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
Open the View menu in the menu bar. If one of the items in the menu is
              Show Expired Certificates
select it. Otherwise it will show
              Hide Expired Certificates
    which is what you want.
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu labeled
              Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    select
              no value specified
Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings.
Now open the same inspection window again, and select
When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
Save the change in the same way as before.
Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings. Never again change any of those settings.
    Step 4
Select My Certificates from the Category list. From the list of certificates shown, delete any that are marked with a red X as expired or invalid.
Export all remaining certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
              Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
    Step 6
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    /var/db/crls
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "crls" should open. Move all the files in that folder to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login password.
Restart the computer, empty the Trash, and test.
    Step 7
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    open -e /etc/hosts
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1                              localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1                                        localhost
    fe80::1%lo0                    localhost
If that's not what you see, post the contents of the window.

  • Https proxy authentication

I have a strange behaviour while browsing with Safari:
I'm located behind a proxy server which requires authentication. For all http requests, everything works perfect, at the first access ever, Safary asked me to supply username and pasword for the proxy, I've chosen to save the password in my key chain and was never asked again for the pasword.
For https requests, Safari asks at least one time per request to put in my proxy username and password. Sometimes, it seems that Safari asks for each single object on a web pagefor the proxy credentials.
I've tried to narrow down the effect and it seems, that this is related to WebKit. If I use Firefox, it asks me only once to put in the proxy credentials and that's it. With OmniWeb (which is also based on WebKit) I have the same problem as in Safari.
Has somebody got the same effect or even has a solution for that?
    Thanks,

  • Safari keep open page from cache, though the origin page has been available

This is weird. Safari keep opening a site with this error message:
    501 Method Not Implemented
    Method Not Implemented
    GET to /indexfr.php not supported.
But when i'm opening the site with Firefox or Opera, the website displayed correctly. Even when i'm using curl/wget from Terminal, all html codes are displayed correctly. I know that about 1 month ago, all browser displayed the same (firefox, safari, opera, curl) 501 method not implemented. But after the remote site has been recovered, Firefox can correctly display the web page, while safari can't. It seemed that safari keep displaying the cached page.
I've tried empty the cache (from menu) many times, tried to push SHIFTCOMMANDR, tried to delete cache folder (~/Library/Cache/Safari), and also i've upgraded my safari to Safari 3 beta. All didn't work.
IMHO, when the remote site responded with 501 HTTP response, safari keep caching 'the http response', and i don't know how to delete it. This is very annoying since i have to switch to Firefox to browse that only site.
FYI: The remote site has more than one IP addresses, maybe i got this response from one of them. So, is it possible that safari keep caching the IP Address? and not to use round-robin behaviour? But i don't think so, because when i edited /etc/hosts to manually assign that site to one of the IP address, Safari still displayed 501 error message.
So, my main question is, how to completely start over Safari just like if we buy a new computer?
    Sorry for my bad english

Ok, i've tried to put a question mark at the end of the url, but still got 501 Method not implemented.
I'm sure that my ISP doesn't cache web pages. Because when i tried with curl or wget (from command line), i got full html code. It is ok to browse the site with Firefox and Opera. And when i set my http proxy to our ISP's proxy, i can browse that site !!!
Here i provide some screenshots, please click:
    Firefox OK, Safari Don't
Safari Don't ok. Proxy off. and my ISP doesn't do transparent caching.

I have Oracle 9iAS version 1.0.2.2.0 installed on a Sun Solaris 8 server. On another server, I have a 8.0.6 database. When I create a Database Access Descriptor pointing to this database, I get the error HTTP 404 not found.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Since no one else has come to your aid I thought maybe I could at least find a forum that might offer some help for you. Seems others are having issues with the HTTP/HTTPS on Safari here too.

I tried a search for "Selenium Grid 1.0.4 and Selenium RC 1.0.1 for safari" in the Apple forums with a criteria of "all" but zero returns.

  • HTTP proxy server connection error

My iPhone4S can't connect well to 3G, only works properly with WIFI connection. When i try to navegate with safari or other apps, HTTP proxy error is shown. I only receive notifications, but when i try to open the specify app: server error. Its weird, because for instance, whatsapp and mail clients like sparrow works properly with 3G. I can update my mail and send whatsapp, but i cant receive or send any attachments.
I've tried to reset my iphone, and reset my network configuration, but the problem is still there.
    Thanks everyone!

I had this problem. It started when I took my unlocked iPhone from Australia on a Telstra SIM to the U.S. and put in a Straight Talk SIM. I used unlockit.co.nz to generate a new APN for my phone while on Straight Talk, which worked fine.
However, upon coming back to Australia and reinserting my Telstra SIM, I couldn't access HTTP. My VPN would start over 3G and I could get push notifications and data in some apps, but anything that used HTTP, including Safari, would give me the proxy error or a network timeout error. Wifi worked perfectly.
I called Telstra and they said it wasn't them. I was sitting on hold with Apple Care when I thought to try inserting my colleague's Telstra SIM into my phone and, voila, it worked perfectly. I hung up and called Telstra back to complain but while on hold I put my own old Telstra SIM back in only to find that I had fixed my problem.
So try inserting a known, working SIM from the same carrier and see if that fixes your problem. Stopping into one of their stores may be the answer if you don't have any other SIMs handy.
I suspect that somewhere in the iPhone an HTTP proxy for 3G setting was set and stuck, and trying a new SIM erased that setting.

  • Safari and the never ending spinner

I ran into a Safari spinner issue today. I was able to access a site via FF but Safari was just spinning. The site was https and a site that I had accessed months ago in Safari but had since changed IP addresses. I tried to reset Safari and I did a
    dscacheutil -flushcache
    Still just a spinner.
Then I tried https://urlofsite.com/login, still spinner, so I clicked the stop button, manually edited the url to take off everything but https://urlofsite.com/ then hit return and presto, the confirm dialog for the certificate came up and I was on my way.
Turns out Safari was displaying the spinner and thought it was displaying the drop down certificate confirmation dialog, the one that animates out of the window header bar, but it wasn't there and the only way to get it to come up was to follow the steps above.
    Weird stuff.
I hope this helps others with similar issues

    hello,
I'm running into the very same problem, got this kind of issue with some https websites.
    Note that :

    - safari seems to work fine with http sites,
    - other macos apps seems to have troubles reaching https site (gmail notifier for instance)
    - I can't reach https websites at work where I'm behind a Squid http proxy.

  • HTTPS Connection to USAirways has started to fail

When I try to look at secure (https) content at USAirways.com with Safari 3.12 I get the following:
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.usairways.com/awa/profiles/MainMenu.aspx” because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.usairways.com”
Safari used to load this page just fine! Insult to injury is added when this page loads from FireFox 3 on the same machine.
Any suggestions? Is anyone else able to replicate?

Having a similar problem here. After a recent SW update (not sure which one), I am no longer able to login to the zappos.com e-commerce site (the 'my account' section, which is https.)
'Safari can’t open the page “https://shopping.zappos.com/r/myzappos.cgi” because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server “shopping.zappos.com”.'
Works fine in FireFox. Tried all the usual tricks, cookies, cache, etc. Also created a new user account on my machine, to really start fresh, and it still fails.
It looks like Safari 3.12 (on 10.4.11) is having issues with the SSL certificate from zappos. Their cert was recently updated as well, and appears to have a couple of missing bits of info in it.
It would be really helpful if Safari would produce a more useful error message when it is unable to open a secure site.

  • How to tell if a web page is secure if there's no HTTPS?

I was at a website that wanted me to fill out an application for something.  I know the company so it wasn't a phishing site.  However when entering the application page I got a message about the security certificate.  Also no HTTPS un the URL.
How can I tell if a page is secure if there's no HTTPS in Safari 5.0.6?  In Internet explorer you could right click the mouse and find out.
Of Course I DID NOT put any information on that page.

    Hi All
Thank you for all your replies but I'm sorry you're all wrong except for Linc.  I know cause years ago when I was on those other computers you colud right click and view the source.
Linc is correct as in MSIE I came accross this a few times.  Just wasn't sure about Safari.  Also yes Linc the SSL certificate was questionable cause I did get that warning message.  Also as Linc said isn't pracitical or worth it.
Funny this site belonged to a staffing agency and there was an application to fill out online asking all sorts of personal stuff including SS#s.  I told them about it when I went to see them.  The owner apologized and told me they have a company managing their web site and he'd get on them about the security issues.
    Thanks again.
