HttpURLConnection and java.io.InterruptedIOException

Hello,
I am experiencing the following problem:
I created a standalone java program to open an HttpURLConnection to
an image on the internet at an https address. I am timing how long
it takes to read image through the stream so I can get an idea of my
connection speed.
It works ok, so I made it a servlet that resides in WebSphere 3.5 App server, and when I invoke it, I get:
java.io.InterruptedIOException: Operation timed out: no further information
I check the field java.io.InterruptedIOException.bytesTransferred and it is 0.
Here is a code snippet:
URL dhServlet = new URL("https://www.some-server.com/some-image.bmp");
HttpURLConnection conn = (HttpURLConnection) dhServlet.openConnection();
conn.setDoOutput(false);
conn.setDoInput(true);
conn.setRequestProperty("Accept-Language","en");
conn.setRequestProperty("Accept", "image/bmp, */*");
if (conn.getResponseCode() == 200) // success
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(conn.getInputStream()));
int chr = in.read();
while( chr != -1 )
chr = in.read();
in.close();
Again, I am confused why it would work in void main but not as a servlet... Thanks for any help you can offer!
- Tom

No they were on different machines -
so I put the stand alone on on the server with the servlet, and
got the error message:
Exception in thread "main" java.net.NoRouteToHostException: Operation timed out:
no further information
at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method)
at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.doConnect(Unknown Source)

at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(Unknown Source)
at java.net.HttpURLConnection.getResponseCode(Unknown Source)
at TimeConnection.main(TimeConnection.java:43)
And Line 43 says
if (conn.getResponseCode() == 200) // success
Maybe the server I connect to restricts by IP? Thanks very
much for your feedback!

  • MultiThreads and java.io.InterruptedIOException, Plz. help

    Dear javas,
    I have a multithreaded application, where I'm using wait and notify to make my thread communications, I'm using the java.io.File to get a list of files in the local folder, then read all these files and use the content of the files as my input, my problem is some time a java.io.InterruptedIOException is throwen, and I don't know why?
    it is thrown when I'm trying to read the content of the file, I browsed the Net for more than three days, and no bugs are reported or one have reported any thing.
    did I miss something??
    Bye the way, the problem happen on unix just, and not with windows
    also it happen with my code and with log4j package
    did any one have an idea or can help me?
    I ahve to deliver the project in the next comming day, and I'm stuck with this thing.
    I did find a work around with my code, but I can't do any thing with log4j
    I appreciate your help.

    did you read the exception description? obviously the thread reading the data was terminated too early. there could be an architectural problem with your design, e.g. the reader thread is a daemon thread and the main thread terminates without waiting for all tasks to be terminated.

  • Problem with HttpURLConnection and HttpSession.

    Hi,
    Problem with HttpURLConnection and HttpSession.
    I created a HttpSession object in my main class and then called a URL via HttpURLConnection.
    I tried to access the same session object from the servlet called by the URL . but the main session
    is not returned a new seperate session is created.let me know how can we continue the same session in
    the called URL also which is created in main class.
    Thanks
    Prasad

    You are not supported to create a HttpSession by java client. Only J2EE web container can create it.

  • HttpURLConnection and HEAD/GET methods

    I am attempting to validate whether an HTML page exists or not.
    I have found that, for about 7% of the pages checked, HEAD and GET methods return different response codes.
    I have structured my code such:
    1) make initial check using HEAD method
    2) for non valid (200) response codes, recheck the page using the GET method.
    In this case about 75% of the pages that failed using the HEAD method will work when using the GET method.
    So, I guess my questions are:
    1) Does anybody know why HEAD/GET return different response codes?
    2) Does anybody know a better way to check if a page exists?
    Here is the sample program I am using with a few URLs that exhibit this behaviour:
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.net.HttpURLConnection;
    import java.net.InetAddress;
    import java.net.URL;
    import java.net.UnknownHostException;
    public class Internet
         private final static String DEFAULT_LOCAL_HOST = "127.0.0.1";
         private URL url;
         private HttpURLConnection http;
         private int responseCode;
         private String responseMessage;
         public Internet(URL url)
              this.url = url;
         public boolean isValid()
              try
                   //  Make first attempt using a HEAD request
                   http = (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection();
                   http.setRequestMethod( "HEAD" );
                   http.connect();
                   System.out.println( "head: " + http.getResponseCode()
                   + " : " + http.getResponseMessage() );
                   //  GET seems to do a better job, try again
                   if ( http.getResponseCode() != HttpURLConnection.HTTP_OK)
                        http = (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection();
                        http.setRequestMethod( "GET" );
                        http.connect();
                        System.out.println( "get:  " + http.getResponseCode() );
                   responseCode = http.getResponseCode();
                   responseMessage = http.getResponseMessage();
                   if (http.getResponseCode() == HttpURLConnection.HTTP_OK)
                        return true;
                   else
                        System.out.println( http.getResponseMessage() );
                        return false;
              catch (IOException e)
                   responseCode = -1;
                   responseMessage = e.getMessage();
                   System.out.println( e );
                   return false;
         public static void main(String[] args)
              throws Exception
              URL url = new URL( "http://www.trca.on.ca" );
              Internet internet = new Internet( url );
              System.out.println( internet.isValid() );
              url = new URL( "http://school.discovery.com/sciencefaircentral" );
              internet = new Internet( url );
              System.out.println( internet.isValid() );
              url = new URL( "http://www.amazon.com" );
              internet = new Internet( url );
              System.out.println( internet.isValid() );
    }

    Using my sample program:
    1) about 3K of data is transferred
    2) it runs in about 8 seconds
    Using InputStream in = http.getInputStream():
    1) about 73K of data is transferred
    2) it runs in about 15 seconds
    Using the getInputStream() method causes the entire file to be transmitted (even though I don't use any read() methods). I don't care about the data.
    I want the check to be as fast as possible which is why I use the HEAD method. It doesn't transfer the contents of the file. But why in some cases does it show a response code other than 200?

    By default java.net.URL connections manage cookies automatically.It appears that it will provide you with Cookie objects from the server when you make the connection. However, when you make a new connection, you will have to send your cookies with it. This is because of the way HTTP works. If that is incorrect, I apologize.It will return cookies received from a particular domain to that domain, which is generally all you need. Cookies always originate at the server end.

    Edit: [Ah ha.|http://blogs.sun.com/CoreJavaTechTips/entry/cookie_handling_in_java_se] There is new stuff in Java 6 for cookies.
    There is, it makes the cookie business more manageable, but the basic cookie mechanism is already there, at least in 1.5, it's just a lot more tedious if you want to do something complicated, like maintain more than one cookie jar in the JVM.

              shows that both our managed servers are part of the cluster..
              But only Sent Frames has data.. Receive frame does not seem to be
              working.
              I tried MultiCastTest Utility in 2 different dos prompts and seems to
              be working. (both windows shows send/receive).
              Though i am not sure if it will work for a quad / 2NIC machine..
              As utility does not take IP address of the server.
              thanks

    that is right.
              we fixed it.. we tried running multicast test and it failed
              so we had to fix our network settings and got multicast working.
              also due to multiple NIC card we had to set "interface" address
              which we had not done while working with single NIC machines
              in clustered mode.

  • Whats is difference between Java JRE  and  Java SDK

    Hi,
    what is the difference between Java JRE and Java SDK...
    i think both of them have the same set of files to be installed...
    I am not able to understand where they differ

    The JRE (Java runtime Environment) contains just the stuff necessary to run Java and the SDK (System Development Kit) contains the extra stuff necessary (and also helpful) to develop in Java.

  • What is difference between C# Gzip and Java swing GZIPOutputStream?

    Hi All,
    I have a Java swing tool where i can compress file inputs and we have C# tool.
    I am using GZIPOutputStream to compress the stream .
    I found the difference between C# and Java Gzip compression while a compressing a file (temp.gif ) -
    After Compression of temp.gif file in C# - compressed file size increased
    while in java i found a 2% percentage of compression of data.
    Could you please tell me , can i achieve same output in Java as compared to C# using GZIPOutputStream ?
    Thank a lot in advance.

    Btw what is faster compression vs. better compression?meaning, does the code spend more time/effort trying to compress the data (slower but better compression) or less time/effort trying to compress the data (faster but worse compression). most compression algorithms allow you to control this tradeoff depending on whether you care more about cpu time or disk/memory space.

  • What is the diffrence between package javax.sql and java.sql

    Is javax designed for J2EE?
    And when to use package javax?

    Hi,
    What is the diffrence between package javax.sql and java.sql?The JDBC 2.0 & above API is comprised of two packages:
    1.The java.sql package and
    2.The javax.sql package.
    java.sql provides features mostly related to client
    side database functionalities where as the javax.sql
    package, which adds server-side capabilities.
    You automatically get both packages when you download the JavaTM 2 Platform, Standard Edition, Version 1.4 (J2SETM) or the JavaTM 2, Platform Enterprise Edition, Version 1.3 (J2EETM).

    so what is the diffrence between My Runnable Interface and Java Runnable?

    thnxClasses and interfaces are not identified by just their "name", like Runnable. The actual "name" the compiler uses is java.lang.Runnable. So even if you duplicate the Runnable interface in your own package, it's not the same as far as the compiler is concerned, because it's in a different package.
    Try importing both java.util.* and java.awt.* (which both have a class or interface named List), and then try to compile List myList = new ArrayList();

  • Java SE and Java EE

    I am a IT graduate and I still need some clarification on the relationship between Java SE and Java EE API. Does EE include SE?
    For application development, I know I can use only SE without the EE, but can I use EE alone without SE?
    Any good articles addressing my questions?
    Thank you very much
    R

    Java EE in fact extends java SE, its primarily aim is to simplify developing multitier enterprise applications (Java SE provides all the necessary basic libraries etc.)
    Because Java EE is an extension of Java SE, you cant use EE without SE - without SE there is no EE.

  • SSO between Portal and Java WD application

    Hi Experts,
    I am using CE 7.2 on localhost and I am very new to SAP.
    I need to know how can I get SSO between Portal and Java WD.  I have a WD application that displays the logged in user using "IUser currentUser = WDClientUser.getCurrentUser().getSAPUser()", as well I can use "IUser user = UMFactory.getAuthenticator().getLoggedInUser()".  Both work.
    Q1. What is the difference in the 2 above?
    Q2. My WD application is set to authenticate user.  The WD application is in URL iView.  I need SSO between Portal and WD application.   Is there a way to get this SSO without SAP Backend (ECC), for now I just need SSO between Portal and Java WD appl.
    Everything is in localhost.
    Please advice. Thanks.

    > need to know how can I get SSO between Portal and Java WD.
    Then I suggest you ask your question in the Web Dynpro Java forum instead of the Web Dynpro ABAP one.

  • J2me and java card, need help to communicate

    we are trying to put together a reader to read smartcards using j2me and we figure that it would be easiest if we could develop it to work with java cards rather than standard smart cards, the problem is we get garbage when we communicate to it, the chip sends us crap, any suggestions what might be wrong, any calls we might be missing, has anyone worked with j2me and java cards or smart cards, any help would be appreciated.

    .... reader app and the ME behind it .... smells like mobile ....
    First of all - if you want to have one mobile application running on this just make sure that whatever is written in ME can use drivers from the reader chip ....
    Workin on the PC is something completely different. There was one good example how to develop one host application in Java provided with the JCOP tools long ago ... I don't know if this is now in the new Eclipse tools.
    But - there was a small API provided that can give you good hints what to do - and - once you have it on the reader side - you can easily integrate ME methods with this ...

    I had issues launching eclipse on CentOS 5 64-bit and Sun JDK 1.6,
    resolved by launching eclipse with the -vm option specifying Sun JDK 1.5 java.
