HUAWEI USB modem with AEBS Networking

Hi All,
I have just got myself a HUAWEI USB modem from 3 Network here in Australia and was hoping to hook it up with my home network (iMac G4, Airport Extreme & AppleTV) as I can’t get ADSL in my area.
I have the iMac G4 connected to the AEBS via ethernet but I’m not sure how to hook up the modem. From what I have read the USB plug on the AEBS hasn’t the drivers for the HUAWE USB modem so the modem is connected to the iMac but this wont share internet connection to the AppleTV.
Has anyone run into this problem and has got a solution?
I plan to buy a new iMac and Time Capsule this year but feel I may still run into the same problems.
Thanks in advance.

I can see this working as follows;
1. Plug the HUAWEI USB modem into your iMac G4
2. Configure internet sharing on the iMac to share the USB Modem connection via the Ethernet port of your iMac (see the following support article for details http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8156.html)
3. Run a cable from your iMac to the WAN port of your Airport Extreme
4. Test the internet connection on the AppleTV, if everything is configured properly you should be able to access the internet.
The only caveat here is that you need to have the internet connection up and running for any device on your network to access the internet. If for whatever reason an internet connection is not available (and with a 3G USB modem is does happen as I've found out here in the UK with T-Mobile's USB modem) any application will eventually timeout and give you an "Internet not connected" error.
My experience of 3G Broadband, while on the whole has been very positive, has seen a good 3G internet connection disappear or dramatically slow down on occasions where the only remedy has been to disconnect and re-connect the connection.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Jason

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.

Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

  • Apple USB modem with broadband?

Im thinking of buying the apple USB modem.. however i have broadband. not dialup.
could i connect to the internet with the USB modem with a broadband connection?
    Thanks if anyone can help

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Apple's USB modem is strictly for a dialup connection, not broadband.
If you need to connect to broadband, you'll need either the internet service provider to give you an ethernet modem, or a WiFi capable modem to hook up your Mac to. Macs will hook up to either kind of broadband connection. USB broadband modems are harder to connect to and often require an extra firmware update, and can be subject to speed restrictions of other items sharing your USB bus.

Is it possible to use a USB modem with a base station?

Hello Gary E. Baldwin. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is it possible to use a USB modem with a base station?
Sorry, but no. You must use an Ethernet modem with the AirPort base stations.

  • Using USB modem with a macbook

I use a vodafone usb modem to connect to the internet , and i am currently trying to download a torrent using Azureus , but my download speed has never been higher than 10kB/s.
Does any one know how to configure a usb modem to Azureus so the speed can improve. Or does anyone know another software which works better with usb modems ... help.

My speeds are related to signal strength just like my phone coverage which is relatively the same thing because the usb modem is a phone of sorts. In urban areas, the strength is much stronger than in rural areas but for the most part, I am very happy with Verizon. I've found that the device is not as important as the provider and the quality of their network.
To me, the ability to use my machine anywhere I choose is appealing regardless of the speed.

  • 4g USB modem with Android (wifi only, ICS) tablet?

Will the  VZW UML290 4g USB modem work with an Android tablet (obviously without a built-in 4g radio, only wifi)?  There is no VZ Access Manager software for Android, would an Android networking app do the trick?

Hi, I have the same question because I want to buy a Transformer Prime. <Content deleted per the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service>
The best that I could find is that you'll do just fine with a MiFi hotspot device and the appropriate Verizon account.  Reviews seem to favor the 4510 L over the Samsung MiFi device.   If you have an account for the Pantech now, you can upgrade your contract to the MiFi.  All of your computers, Android, Mac and Windows will work on the MiFi hotspot because there is no software needed to connect.
Alternatively, you can check out Cradlepoint wireless routers.  They offer a boatload of portable WiFi routers that can tether to any number of mobile devices including the Pantech UML290.   For the Pantech, you plug it into the Cradlepoint router's USB port and create your own portable hotspot LEGALLY with your Verizon Pantech account. You then connect your Transformer wirelessly to this hotspot bypassing the need to use the VZW interface that is not yet, and may never be, Android compatible.
As for your original post regarding an Android app for the Pantech UML290, I'm certain some 'enterprising' droid devotee is working on it, However, I've not yet found anything on the web yet that provides a viable work around except for the completely legit MiFi from Verizon or a Cradlepoint wireless router.
NB to Verizon support.  You should have provided the MiFi information, it's your product for pete's sake.
    Good luck!

  • Orange USB Modem with "Mobile Partner" connects but won't load pages

    All,
I talked Orange Telecom into giving me a free trial with one of their USB modems. I plugged the modem into my MB Pro, installed the "Mobile Partner" software and configured the connection settings as specified by the Tech. I am able to connect fine using the device, however, it will not allow me to receive data, so I am unable to load web pages. The connection says that I am sending data, but not receiving anything. Any ideas on what I need to do in order to successfully receive data?
    Current Settings are as follows:
    Connection: Orange
    APN: orange.ug
    Phone Number: *99#
    user: orange
    password: orange
with these settings I am able to connect fine, but no data is received. I am guessing this has something to do with a setting in Network Preferences, but I can't figure out why it's not working. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

Hi Sig - thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I was sitting with the Tech rep when we configured the settings, so we are both sure the phone number was right. Additionally, I am connecting and I can see that information is being "sent," however the problem is that no information is being "received" so I am unable to load web pages, etc.
It must be some sort of problem with the network settings in Mac OS because there does not appear to be any problem connecting to the service, the problem has been receiving information. Any other suggestions or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JB

  • Ibook wifi with usb modem with adsl router

how could you connect the ibook so that it's wireless to the phone line. I'm gonna have to buy all the parts but what's the easiest way to do this ?

To give the iBook G4 wireless the ability to connect to a wireless network, you simply need to install an AirPort Extreme card. The last iBook G4s had wireless built-in.
If you have a ADSL modem without an Ethernet output you will need to replace that modem with a modem that does have an Ethernet output. Then you can buy any inexpensive 802.11b/g compliant wireless router to provide a wireless network for your iBook.

  • Can you extend with AEBS networks with other brand wireless routers?

Just need to extend my network a little further. I am hoping a low cost belkin could do that meaning I need that belkin to extend my AEBS network......is that possible??
my AEBS is about 1 year old.

The answer is "it depends" but as a rule, no. "Extend" a network is strictly for Apple AirPort networks.
The only way I can think this would be possible is by creating a WDS. You can do this using a Linksys WRT54G router, perhaps others as well, but it is tedious to set up. A WDS will also result in degraded overall network performance even when it's configured perfectly.
When you examine all the alternatives, you'll probably agree that buying an AirPort Express is the only practicable solution.

  • Using Pantech 4G LTE USB Modem with Chromebook

Got a Chromebook for Christmas, but I don't have wi-fi at home.  I do have the UML290 modem for my windows laptop.
Can I install VRZ manager on Chromebook, and use the USB modem on it to connect to the internet?
    TIA
    Rick

No!  Chromebook uses Android OS, you will a CradlePoint MBR95 or Pepwave Surf on The Go Router to insert the UML290 and then you can use the built in wifi in the Chromebook to connect to the router and get internet access.
You can get the gear at 3gstore
Here is some Reviews on the MBR95 works like a champ

  • USB modem with non 3G iPad?

I have just bought a 32Gb wifi only iPad. I have no experience with any form of mobile data plans (3G stuff), so it is all new me.
If I buy a USB stick modem, is there an adapter that enables it to be used with my iPad?

I strongly recommend the MiFi. It works great, is very small, portable, and it can also be used to provide access for up to 5 devices. The best deal I found was at 3Gstore.com.

  • How do I share a 3G USB modem connected to my Macbook Pro with my Airport Express?

Hi. I have a 3g USB modem connected to my macbook pro, and I want to try share the signal with my Airport Express (latest model).
Now before everybody screams that it can't be done, I was searching the forums and found a discussion in which someone describes how to do it from 2008, unfortunately it is archived and I couldn't ask the author directly, and the description doesn't go into much detail.
In the thread, the author describes turning internet sharing on to share the USB modem, creating a network on the macbook, then renaming the Airport Express network name the same as the macbook, and setting the AX to Join a Network.
Problem being there is no description of whether the macbook connected to the AX via ethernet or wifi, what settings were changed on the AX eg bridge mode.
Is this possible in theory, and has anybody had any success sharing a 3g USB modem via a macbook pro to an AX? I know there are other options like getting 3g ethernet modems, unfortunately not an option in this case - new house, waiting for DSL to be installed, 2-3 month wait.
    Thanks

Well, you cannot use the 3G USB modem plugged directly into the Express. However, you can configure your MacBook Pro to do 'Internet sharing' (SysPrefs>Sharing) over the Ethernet port, and then connect your Express into the Ethernet port. Alternatively, you could always get your MacBook to 'create a wireless network'.
new house, waiting for DSL to be installed, 2-3 month wait.
You could always look for open WiFi networks to *cough*borrow*cough* .

  • USB modem won't work with Panther

My girlfriend has a black G3 powerbook and uses a Speedtouch 330 USB modem successfully on OS9. However I have also installed Panther 10.3.9 and installed the Speedtouch Panther driver update from their site but when I open the Network preferences panel Speedtouch USB does not come up as an option.
If I go to the list of modems it is there but if I select it it still doesn't work.
In the past I have used a USB modem with my G4 and Panther and after installing the driver it immediately appeared as a new connection option called Speedtouch USB and it worked fine.
I have tried reinstalling the driver several times. I have spoken to Apple and I have spoken to Speedtouch with no result.
I can only assume that it is something to do with the black G3 compatibility.
I have done a test with her powerbook in Panther and plugged in my ethernet router and it works fine.
But these routers are quite expensive and it bugs me... why won't Panther recognise the USB driver?
    Any suggestions please ?
    thanks

My westell modem is very flakey and will often reset its connection from PPOE to bridge all by itself. From what I read on the web, setting the westell to bridge is the way to go since it allows the router to actually route. But, for me it only works when sent to PPOE. That means that the westell is both a modem and DNS/NAT router so I disabled those capabilities in airport. The verizon dslstart.verizon.com has some help on how to do this. search on westell 6100.
