Hub is awful

I am having untold amounts of trouble with the home hub (2), its awful!
Whenever we watch a video streamed over the network, the hub boots all devices (2 laptops, pc and ps3 though not all on at the same time) off the network and does not let you access the network again at all unless you switch off the hub and restart it.
i called bt and got a guy reading a script and refusing to deviate from it. he told me to take the bt socket's panel off and use the test line as it is a problem with the line!
I told him it's the hub not the line as i have had no trouble whatsoever with my BB just the hub that kicks me off.
His reply was to repeat the same script as before.
Then, for good measure he repeated it again and again!!
In the end i did it and gues what!!!??!! i have the exact same problem, if not worse, but now my box looks stupid!
All i want to do is watch a programme from my pc upstairs through the ps3 over a secure and stable wireless network with my wife for a hour or two.
Has anyone else had this problem? is there a way to speak to a real person who wont fob me off or just repeat a script over and over? Is it just that the home hub is pants?
Looking at various problems it looks like the hub is the problem

Hi Apoc,
Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum.
How long have you had this BT home hub 2.0?  Do you have an alternative router that you could try, just so we can rule the hub out as being faulty?  Have you tried changing the wireless channel on the hub?

Drop me a reply when you get a chance.

  • Setting up Time Capsule as Router

I apologise if this has already been covered.
I've been using my TC purely as a backup HD for nearly a year now and I've now decided to replace my BT Home Hub with it because the Home Hub is awful. So I've an Ethernet cable going straight from my modem to the TC.
I've configured the TC in Airport Utility to create a wireless network etc and after it resets it's throws me an error saying the Ethernet cable is not connected into the WAN port. I've checked and it's firmly secured in there but the port isn't lighting up where as all my LAN ports will glow green when I plug something in.
I'm thinking hardware issue but I'm checking here now in case it's something I've blindly overlooked
    Thanks in advance

    You were 100% right there
Now I have a new issue though, when I plugged the TC into the Home Hub the TC couldn't connect to the internet (Amber flashing light). But the Home Hub still could. Figuring it was another classic Apple Vs. BT hardware issue I switched the Home Hub to a Netgear ADSL Modem/Router and connected the TC to that.
Problem I have now though is that whilst the TC will happily connect to the Netgear (solid green light) without any problems, the Netgear can't connect to the internet. Network assistant showed all green lights up to ISP in the diagnosis but internet and server were both showing red.
I know this isn't an ISP forum and I know I need to ring my ISP to tell them to sort it out but does anyone have any ideas? I'm tired of complaining down the phone :P

  • 10.3.1.1565 - how do I get rid of awful blue blob in hub home page on Q10

    Really not liking new upgrade
Hub bottom bar which used to be accessible when required, now fixed and using valuable real estate - have lost a full e-mail summary from bottom of screen which is not good....
Also - when I use facebook app, if I send my son a message,. soon as I start to type, the auto suggest text bar comes up and cannot see what I am typing unless I scroll and then have to stop typing, start again - total abomination of an upgrade from what I can see.... lack of proper testing and share price will be hit again...
suggestions, polite ones, always welcome how to resolve these issues

    Hello golfbug72,
The FB behaviour you are suffering, I sometimes had a similar issue when posting comments to a picture, but it disappeared when I updated the FB app a few weeks ago.
I surely don't have the issue when sending a message from the Hub to someone.
FYI my version installed is 10.6.31.2.
Which version do you have, and can you detail a bit your issue so I can try on my side please?

  • Modem mode for a Hub 5?

After years on Virgin Media where I used an ASUS router alongside a Virgin cable modem, I now find myself having moved house stuck on BT Infinity. So far, 2 weeks in, the service (both internet and customer service) is staggeringly awful.
As well the and lies from customer service and the terrible internet speeds, another issue has arisen. The home hub 5 seems incapable of sustaining 5ghz connections. I have a bunch of 5ghz devices, mostly Apple stuff, but also a Samsung Smart TV. All of them will suffer massive slow downs on 5ghz to various degrees, and some will eventuallly get cut off from getting any data at all. They still think they're connected, but data will have stopped and will never start again, unless I disconnect then reconnect them.
I've talked to BT about this of course, and even got a replacement hub, but the problems persist. All of these devices worked flawlessly on my old ASUS router on 5ghz. I could use 2.4ghz of course, and I have to do just that as the 5ghz is so broken, but speeds are around half that of 5ghz. (which were not exactly impressive to begin with)
Is it possible to stick the hub 5 in a dumb modem only mode, to essentially make it like a Virgin Media cable modem? Then I could get a real wifi router, one which actually knows how to put out a 5ghz signal, and rely on that instead.
Being with BT is like going back in time by about 10 years. It's amazing how a company so big could offer a service so comprehensively terrible.

The closest you can get to modem mode with the HH5 is to put the new router into the DMZ on the HH5 and maybe turn off wifi, uPNP and the firewall on the HH5 too.
Alternatively, there are various things you can do with the HH5 to try and fix the wifi - turn off smart setup, split the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands using different SSIDs, select your own channel instead of Automatic, change the Wireless Interface type to the highest speed.

  • How to connect a BT Home Hub V3.0 Type B wirelessl...

On my network I have a BT Home Hub (version 3.0 Type B) as the main router. I also have an old BT Home Hub (version 1.5) lying around. The router is located in the study and I hope to set up the spare home hub as a wireless repeater in the lounge next to the study. This would allow me to give a Sony TV access to the internet via an Ethernet cable connected from the TV to the wireless repeater.(By the way the Sony Wi-Fi dongle costs £70 and the reviews on it are awful.) Any thoughts on how to do this? Some clear concise instructions would be very useful.

My wireless router is that TP-LINK and it`s firmware is updated to the latest version. (I using the stock firmware). There are no wireless network in range, that are using the same channel as mine is. The latency is happening to my friends connected to my router too. I am using wicd for network manager, and wicd-curses for network manager front-end.
I will post more info if needed.
Please advise me what can I do.
    Regards

Okay well I can see nothing that would cause this in anything you've posted. Especially if your friends are experiencing this too.
I would either try downgrading the firmware (If after upgrading this happened). However, I see that your TL-WR1043ND is VERY well supported by Open-WRT. You may want to give it a look.
Remember that the WiFi channels are overlapped. Try getting as far away as possible from other networks.
Ensure you are running WPA-PSK with the AES cipher and a key of 63 pseudorandom characters. This way others are not using your WiFi to torrent and suck bandwidth.
Try to stick to 802.11g but if at all possible go with 802.11n. Also if possible move up to the 5Ghz band to get out of the way of other things using the 2.4Ghz uncontrolled spectrum block.
If your router is running things like DHCP, DNS, FTP, SMB, SSH, NTP, VPN, Etc... Quit it. Your TL-WR1043ND is running a 400Mhz processor with 32Mb of memory.
That's basically all the advice I've got. Hope that get's the ball rolling on fixing this for you.

  • Home Hub 3 config for new Infinity install

    Hi all,
Well, I've been with Demon Internet since almost day 1, way back in 1993 IIRC. However as BT have now rolled out Infinity into our village, and I can almost spit on the Infinity cab from my office window, I've decided to jump ship from Demon (bad move perhaps?)
I have quite a big internal network with several NAS, network printers and other stuff, and also use Wifi via an Apple Time Capsule/Airport Router that is connected to a Netgear router in brige mode.
I don't really want to have to fanny about reconfiguring my whole network to a new subnet, and wonder just how 'manageable' the HH3 is? Will the Openreach eng. ensure the router is configured to my requirements or just set it up as default and so long as he has a gateway connection out onto the net will just leave me to it?
Any advice, other than of course telling me that they may actually not bother to turn up at all....!

Thw Home Hub is intended to be a "plug and play" router for residential customers with no technical knowledge.
The engineer will normally go through connecting one computer to the hub to check that the connection works OK.  That's about all.
Compared with more "professional" products, there's an awful lot that can't be tweaked on the HH.  If it matters to you, you may be better off buying your own cable router.

  • They killed my internet and gave awful service

Hello, not sure anyone can give any advice but has just had the most awful 4 days (so far and likey to go on)
    The history.
Wednesday 30 July reported fault online about phone with no dial tone.
Thursday 31 received an email form BT saying they had tried to phone (why when the fault said the phone wasn’t working) and they would send an engineer by close of play on the 5 August.
Engineer rang at 17:00 on the 1 August to say he had fixed the fault, he had replaced the ports as they were faulty. He said that the fibre port will affect the broadband but it should reset itself in about an hour, if not report the fault and they can reset them remotely.
I left it 2 hours then reported the fault, I was told there was routine maintenance so the system would be off for 24 hours anyway from 10:00 that morning to 10:00 on Saturday. No one hadwarned me about this I explained that I had only lost internet access when the engineer fixed the fault, and the person was adamant that signal would be returned Saturday at 10:00 (I had also explained what the engineer had told me)
As I doubted this I rang the auto update line, this said there was a major fault in my area but this had been fixed, reboot and if no access raise a fault.
I rang again and was talked through the process of resetting both the modem and hub and told as I was not using my BT Hub they couldn’t say anymore, but would book a call back from second line support 9:40 – 10:40 the following day.
    The call did not come
I rang the help line and gave up after and hour
I tried again for another hour
I tried again and got through after 45 minutes, I said about not receiving the call back (this was ignored) and i had to explain the problem, including what the engineer had said, we went round in circles going over everything everyone else had tried, and he also insisted I plug in my Asus router to confirm it was not a hardware issue, plus trying a different ethernet cable I had. I had stated several times that I had already tried this repeatedly, and the instructions the engineer had provided. His response was that the engineer was a phone engineer and not a broadband engineer so didn’t know what he was talking about.
At this point I gave up, told him to book an engineer, that I was at work all week, told him I was really unhappy that BT had caused the fault and now I would be without access for over a week, asked why an engineer couldn’t come out today or tomorrow and he said engineers don’t work weekends but next weekend was special. I asked to speak to a supervisor and he said one would call me back in 2 hours, I doubted this and asked for a manager to be told they don’t work weekends either.
Fed up I said just book the engineer for whenever you want, get your supervisor to ring me and also get the complaints department to ring me.
The supervisor rang back 3 hours later, no help what so ever, would not consider the advice from the engineer and kept repeating that the first appointment was Tuesday, the engineer would need access to my property (even though the fault is in the exchange) as he may need to replace the BT Hub which clearly is not the problem as my on router also has the same problem.
There is no broadband signal reaching the hub, the open reach modem has green across the board but the hub has a red broadband light and shows as "disconnected" when i access the web inteface.
have had this years ago and the engineer fixed it frm the exchange (supprise!!) I cant believe the exchange is empty all weekend.
I would swap provider but i cant look it up as no internet - lucky i have 4G on my phone
    So frustrated!!!!!!

    @ BlinkeredCat23
please remember you will still be using the same Openreach infrastructure and engineer just a different name on the bill

  • Any ideas on my faulty Hub and lights...?

Yesterday morning...all was well, working from home...
Yesterday afternoon..no connectivity...hmm, checked the hub and only the power and wireless lights were illumninated blue...
So went through the old power on/off etc..same thing, checked a spare ADSL filter I had..still no joy/reset to defaults etc...after another reboot, power light was orange and every other light flashing purple intermittently!
After 20 odd mins on hold, finally got through to a pleasant chap who diagnosed the hub has being faulty...and another one will be delivered to my work address on Tuesday at the latest...
This morning, turned the hub on, power and wireless are blue again, everything else not illuminated..
Anyone has the same issue as this? The hub officially kerplunk?
Never thought i'd say it either, in a million years, but thank god for my neighbours Talk Talk BB...or else I'd have to get into the office to do 12 hours on call, of which I have only actually worked 30 mins since 7am!
    Cheers

It does sound goosed..I tried my spare BT ADSL filter and next doors too...neither resolved it...so does point to a router issue I spose.
Just wondered if anyone else had experienced similar issues...especially the disco lights!
Certain Flashing LED patterns mean the device has entered an error state of some kind, sometimes it is possible to tell (if you have a manual of technical data) what the error is.
Check that your ADSL is still functioning properly with a known good router if you can (before you attach the replacement) , as suggested  this looks like a faulty router.

  • Home Hub 2 & https time out issues

I have had a new HH2 for the last few weeks and have realised that since fitting the Hub, I am having issues with accessing secure sites (https).  I find that as I go through the security that a bank or similar would ask for, there is a long delay before proceeding and quite often I will receive a time out message.  I have tried this on my desktop and 2 laptops and get the same problem.  Is there a setting that I need to change in the Hub?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Not really enough information but these links may help, it depends on whether you are on ADSL or ADSL2+ or Infinity.
Under certain conditions the Homehub 2 does not play well with fragmented packets & unfortunately there  appears to be no way of altering the Homehub default setting , so if relevant you will need  to alter the settings on all affected devices.

  • Downloading at maximum speed causes BT Home Hub 3 ...

    Hi there,
We have a BT Home Hub 3 which to be honest, is awful. Everytime someone downloads something from a source with good servers (e.g. I can DL it at the maximum speed my line allows), it prevents anyone else on the network from loading anything at all. We can roughly get 2.1MB/s, but as soon as this is reached, everyone else is kicked from the network.
How can I prevent this? It's ridiculous that everytime I want to download something which doesn't have the ability to cap the speed, I have to let the download finish, reboot the router, usually at least twice.
    Really dissapointed in BTs services.

  • Awful wireless speeds with HH3 and Infinity

Hi all, had infinity installed last week (28th Dec). BT haven't sent me my hub yet so the OR engineer had to get me a HH3 Type A off his van and said for me to use that till my HH5 arrives on 6th Jan. The HH3A was awful so I swapped it for my HH3B from my old house where I had infinity last year before I had to move back to my parents and had to cancel it. Anyway the wired speed is fine, 38 down 9 up, stable and good ping. The wireless is a different matter. Where to start. I have tried b/g/n normal, b/g/n 40mhz, channel 1 - 11 (all combos), and DHCP lease increase amongst other things. Basically when I check wireless devices individually, my iphone 4 for example, link speed is often 1mbps, regardless of proximity to the hub, the channel, the freq, regardless of anything. Speed test on my phone will show 0.3 down and 0.0 up. My sky mini wireless on demand box is the same, 1mbps, it will then shoot up to 140mbs but there will be no download speed increase. I don't know why this is happening. I have turned off all lights in the house, the heating is off, no radios are on, no cordless phones are on, I just don't know what to do. I will of course try my HH5 when it arrives and hope this helps. I will be hard wiring my sky box and xbox in soon to avoid wireless as I have always hated it's instability and unpredictability. Anyone else suffer such poor speeds?

Try a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds. If you were previously using it on ADSL broadband it might be a configuration problem.

  • Beyond awful service

I am trying to converse with my dad but I keep getting dropped calls and now I can't  even video call with him.  Would I get better service if I PAY for it?  Since MSN messenger was replaced by skype, the service has been positively awful  Dropped calls all the time, freeze ups, just nasty.  I'm thinking of looking for something else or going back to the good old standby - my land line.  At least it's dependable.

Here is my BT Hub page - this is how it looks at the moment and the noise margin is very low, however at one point yesterday this would have looked entirely different with a low speed and a very high noise margin - all you are getting is a snapshot at the moment, which I do not think is going to be particularly helpful, because as I said, my problem is that my connection changes every couple of hours - an hour from now it could be down to less than 1 meg, and that's been the problem for a few months now.  But sure, if you want to see how it is right now, then here it is.

As I said earlier, it would be fine if it stayed like this but it doesn't.  The only reason I'm able to post this right now is that I have a good connection right now - I often have periods of several hours where I cannot connect to the internet at all.
I do not have one of those modern sockets, this flat was built in 1975 and I doubt that much has changed since then.  I certainly do not have a test socket.  No extensions, no phones, just ADSL filter and hub.

  • Hub drops wireless connections when transferring l...

My HH2 is having wireless issues over the last month or so - in that when I either transfer large files across my network or download a large file from t'internet after a while it kicks ALL wireless connections off and then refuses to allow them to re-connect.  I have to reset the hub to get access again.
Is it faulty or is there something I should be checking.

The Homehub has a problem with packet fragmentation try changing the MTU values on your Network devices.
The Maximum recommended value on the BT Network is 1458.

  • Infinity Hub

    hi guys,
Am getting infinity on 2nd March. Just wanted to see what the general consensus/feedback is on the infinity hub (presumably also know as the Hub 3?). My current setup is using a Hub v2.0 type A (tried a type B but wireless was awful). It's wireless range is okayish but not great. Our main socket is in the lving room downstairs whilst my study/converted bedroom) is upstairs about 15 metres away. The wireless is a bit up and down reaching into the study. Flickers between 18 mbps to 54 mbps and even a cryptic '1.1gbps????' at times and as such the download speeds are a bit all over the place. As low as 1 mbs, as fast as 8.7 mbps. So I guess the walls are blocking out quite a bit. I have tried every wireless channel possible, 11 seems to be the best but it's still not fantastic. Our main bedroom at the far side of the house is even worse, right on the cusp of the wireless range methinks. It will work in there but drops quite a bit and as one of the missus' favourite pastimes is surfing on the iPad sitting in bed it's not ideal really.
So I guess what I am asking is whether the infinity hub yields much improvement in the wireless department? It would have to serve a mix of 'G' and 'N' devices. Would an independant router be better once infinity is installed be better, any recommendations? Is their a guide to BT settings that need inputting should I use a 3rd party router?
    Thanks in advance,
    Wayne

look on the forum there is a ton of posts on all these issues including a recent one by me! Just for a starter I would try and set the wireless channel to one that is not shared by anyone around your immediate area. Cuts out interference. Secondly and so far its proving right, wireless N on this router is broke, switch it to B & G only and see if there is any improvement? So far its sorted out my issues. Currently waiting on the HH3 coming out and then I`m gonna complain and see if they will replace the router. Its not fit for using wireless N which is **bleep** all use when you have 40mb infinity!
