Hub keeps restarting - Dynamic DNS issue?

I recently got a NAS and tried to open it up on the internet to allow me to access the data away from home...
Anyhoo since I got it wired up to the hub and configured the remote access (which I did through the NAS not the hub directly) I noticed that the hub keeps restarting. The restarts are happening about half hourly and as I'm sure you can guess is making the poor broadband we have extreamly bad.
My question is simple - before I spend hours on the phone to BT could my issue be caused by my use of a dynamic dns to access my nas? If so I will just disable and manage without the remote access.
Thanks
Nick

I use a NAS with DynDNS, and have no problems with my home hub 1 restarting. Perhaps you have a faulty home hub?
My network configuration is shown below. I use static IP adresses on my devices, and have DynDNS configured using the
options within the home hub menu.
I have specific incoming ports mapped to the NAS IP address via the home hubs games and application sharing.

  • Wireless Dropouts, Hub Keeps Restarting

A few days ago my hub started restarting much more frequently on its own and also my wireless keeps dropping out. This makes it very hard for gaming or simply watching videos when it does this. It is very bothersome. The connection hasn't been slow, my ping, download and upload speeds have been fine, but this problem persists and I do not know why.
Here is my helpdesk. What has actually come to my attention is the amount of noise and attentuation, however my connection is absolutely fine and the line is fine too, so I don't think this is the problem.
I am quite sure that my drops are nothing to do with DCHP renewing the leases on my devices' IP addresses too, as the logs do not show that.
Could someone help me please? Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The first thing to do is to factory reset the home hub, this fixes many issues.

Remember to disable smart setup again afterwards.
Recent firmware changes seem to have corrupted the configuration.

  • Dynamic DNS issues and/or confusion

I work for a small university.  We have two domain controllers running on Windows 2008 (not R2).  On dc2 we have a DHCP server running serving several VLANs across campus.  We've been having issues where the dynamic DNS entries contain an
incorrect IP address for several machines.  In some cases there are even several entries for a single machine.  I've notice two main issues by looking at the DNS server.  First, old entries aren't being cleaned up.  Second, after re-imaging
a workstation the DNS entry for that machine is not being updated.  After doing some research I came across the blog entry from Ace Fekay on how to go about setting up dynamic DNS.  I immediately determined from reading that scavenging was not setup
properly on our server.  I think I've corrected that problem, but I'll have to be patient and see what happens over time.  This brings me to the issue of machines not adding themselves or updating their records in DNS.
After reading Ace's blog I decided to follow his recommendations for configuring dynamic DNS.  I created a normal active directory user to use for configuring the DHCP credentials (it appears our server was set to use domain administrator previously).
I added the DHCP computer object (this is also one of our domain controllers) to the DnsUpdateProxy group. On the DHCP server I have checked "Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below" along with the "Always A and PTR
records when lease is deleted".  I also checked "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not request updates...".  After doing all of this I rebooted the dc2 server.  I then manually deleted all of the
existing dynamic entries on the DNS server, so they could properly be recreated.  Now, here is the problem after setting all of this up.  I'm now seeing student's personal machines, phones, tablets, etc. being populated in our DNS.  Before making
these changes only domain joined machines existed in DNS.  Our DNS is configured to allow only secure updates.  Why is it that now non domain trusted devices are being allowed to create DNS entries?  I was under the assumption that secure updates
meant domain only.  Am I not understanding something properly here?  Can someone please provide me some insight to what's going on and what I might be able to do to prevent non-domain joined devices from having entries created in DNS?

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that non domain trusted devices have been registered their DNS entries in DNS which is configured to allow only secure updates.
If a DHCP server that is running on a domain controller is configured to perform dynamic updates on behalf of its clients, that DHCP server is able to take ownership of any record, even in the zones that are configured to allow only secure dynamic update.
This is because a DHCP server runs under the computer account, so if it is installed on a domain controller it has full control over DNS objects stored in the Active Directory.
DHCP server will perform dynamic updates on behalf of its clients when you enable the option "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not request updates...",  and this means that the “owner” of the DNS entries is
DHCP server, not the clients. And the zone accepts the DHCP server’s update because the server has full permission.
You may try to uncheck the option "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not request updates...".
    Best Regards,
    Eve Wang

    Hi Eve,
You are correct in your understanding that "non domain trusted devices have been registered their DNS entries in DNS which is configured to allow only secure updates."  I also made a mistake in my original post.  I meant to say that I also
had "Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records".
Now back to your reply.  Are you saying that if I had my DHCP server running on a non-domain controller that I would be seeing a different behavior in regards to permissions of DNS objects and that I wouldn't be experiencing the behavior of non domain
trusted devices being created in a secure zone?  I thought setting the DNS dynamic credentials to a normal user account was supposed to help with security concerns in regards to DNS objects.  What would happen if someone named their personal computer
the same name as one of our file servers or even a domain controller?  Would the DHCP/DNS server actually have the power to overwrite that record in DNS?
I'll try your recommendation of unchecking the "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records..." option and see what happens.
    Thanks for your reply...

  • Hub keeps restarting

Is anyone else having a problem with their hub? I've been a member of infinity for roughly about a month now, and it had no problems up until the last 2 days where it's suddenly begin to restart itself. It's getting quite annoying to say the least.
The resetting can happen for anything upto about 20 times a day, if not more. It just randomly clocks off when I'm not even using the PC as I noticed while sat watching TV.
Is there any websites, or anywhere I can goto that will give a detailed out-put of my line, so I can post it here and see if anyone can identify any problems with my connection?
    Thank you.
    Andy.

It follows either there is a fault with your line, HH, openreach modem etc.
You have 2 choices, live with it or call it in.

  • Programming error in HH2 software: Dynamic DNS

Advanced Settings >>Broadband >> Dynamic DNS
When you try to add multiple hosts the behaviour is very erratic.
I am testing some websites I am building and need to have 3 host names in the list of multiple hosts.
The first two went in OK ... after some funny behaviour.
They have been working fine for months: keeping DynDNS informed of changing IP addresses whenever I restart my HH2.
    But the third one ...
I can add it to the list of supported hosts successfully ... for a mo ... by using the text field under "hosts supported".
It gets added to the list but then it disappears as soon as the "Apply" button is clicked.
At the same time the HH2 admin program won't forget an old hostname in the "Host" text field which I have not been using for weeks; have deleted from the list of multiple hosts and have deleted from my DynDNS account.
The routing via DynDNS works fine for all 3 current hostnames, but I just can't get the HH2 to accept the third one which means that when I next restart my HH2 I'll have to go to DynDNS website and update the IP address of the 3rd host myself manually.
I've tried every thing I can think of; also tried it in several browsers: Safari, Firefox, Opera and IE8; emptying browser cache. Finally concluded that there is a programming error in the hub software (Software version 8.1.H.J - Type A) on this page.
Shame ... in all other respects the HH2 is truly a brilliant piece of equipment.

I have tried that already, as well, and it did not work. However, the error message now tells me that the cabinet file "iTunes.cab" (rather than "QuickTime.cab" as it did before) required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, and error from reading the CD-ROM, or a problem with the package.

My I wonder if anyone on here could help me.
My 27' 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM iMac keeps restarting all the time. It's been happening for months now but has got worse and worse. It started when I was using programmes like adobe Pr & Ae but now it happens when I have only have safari or other small apps open.
What happens is the screen freezes, I can hear a clicking should and then the machine just restarts all of a sudden.
I get the message: 'Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Click report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple' which I have done ever time for about 50+ times now in total. The 'problem details and system configuration' states the below:

I use my iMac daily for work and it happens from 4-10 times a day depending on what applications i'm using. More if I'm trying to render a video. It is really furstrating and keeps me from doing any work at all, I can't keep working like this but I have no choise. I really can't be without my computer for very long as I use it to do everything and I do not have another. Also I have all my files on the hard drive. I have bought a Seagate external HD to back up my files onto so I can make a genus bar appointment but everytime I run time machine or try to copy any of my files over to the external HD the machine restarts and disrupts the file transfer. So I can't even back up my files which are really important to me. I even had to retype this whole message becuase my imac restarted while I was fulling in this question.
What is worse is that I bought the extra warrenty (Apple Care) which is due to expire sometime in March 2014 I'm unsure of the date. Might have expired already I don't know. So I need to get this fixed ASAP.
    Extra information on the machine:
    iMac
    27-inch, Mid 2011
Processor  3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
Can anyone see from the information I have given about what could be wrong with my machine?
Any help or assistance would be much appriciated.
    Thanks,
    James

Hi.  I am currently having the same issue on my 2011 27"  3.1 GHz i5  with 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
For the last couple of months I have been experiencing random restarts, power offs and so on.  I have already had this escalated and had my machine taken into Apple to run a Hardware test.  They redid the newest OSX version in store and ran the AHT for an hour and got no results.  The Genius Bar were asked by Apple Canada to run an all night test.  According to Apple they ran the test for 4 hours and got nothing.  I was then told to take the machine home and run it with just the memory that was original in the machine.  I stressed tested the video card with a benchmark tool called Heaven for 2 hours.  90C was the temp and no failure.  I did a Terminal "Yes" loop for a couple of hours and no failure on the CPU.  I ran the Apple Hardware Test for 11 minutes and this is the result.
I also have a video of what happened after I restarted the test after about a 5 minute cooldown period.  20 minutes into the test the Imac stalled and made 3 long beeps over and over again like an alarm with a long pause between.  I took the memory out of the DIMM 0 & 1 slots and replaced them in the 2&3 slots rand the test and got nothing after 2 hours.  I put the memory back in the original spot and ran it again and got no results.  Apple contacted the "Genius" techs and they informed them that I had fixed the problem and everything should be good now.  I was also told to go ahead and transfer back over my Time Machine Backup.  Since this all happened I have had the Imac restart 2 times in the last almost 2 weeks and today got this error message

I would also like to add that The Second High Level tech I spoke to told me to use a program to take an image of what my computer was doing when the fresh install of Mavericks was installed and then again after the Time Machine restore.  I sent both and have had no response back. The "Engineers of Apple" would be taking a look at those files. This is what I was told anyway's.
So I would like any advise because Apple hasn't been too helpful.  I haven't heard anything back at all. Its been a little while.  This seems that it could be an issue. I sat in the store speaking to a gentleman with a brand new iMac 27 inch that was having the same exact issues.  I was told his was newer so they were not the same.  The owner of the new iMac just rolled his eyes and laughed. James McConville seems to be having the same issue and I have read quite a few others before I saw this post from yesterday.
    Help Us Please.

  • Macbook Pro keeps restarting when watching videos online

My Mid 2011 13in, 500GB HD, 16GB Ram Macbook Pro keeps restarting whenever I'm watching videos online be it Youtube, or Xfinity or anyother video site. Browsing online works fine, nothing happens. I also watched a movie I had on my harddrive and that worked fine as well. The problem is with online video. I even tried it on both Chrome and Safari and I still get the same result.  This started about 3 days ago now my Macbook restarts around 8-10 times a day. It has become a constant hassle that I had no issues with before. After it restarts it leaves a Kernel Panic Report reading: Can anyone help me figure out what the problem might be? Please and thank you.

Before this, it said the hard drive died. However, replacing the brackets allowed me to continue using the original hard drive.
If the hard drive died, replacing a bracket (whatever that means) could not possibly have revived it.
The panic log indicates a hardware fault, probably in the mass-storage subsystem.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hi. Try repairing the disk and disk permissions by using the install disk.

Does anybody know what this means? Thanks. Running Mavericks

I went back to apple and they replaced my logic board... It has been about 2 weeks and the computer is now restarting again and I am getting this issue. I have no idea what it could be now. Does anyone have an idea? I think I got a lemon. The trackpad also just got stuck and I had to enable tap to click and I am getting service battery warnings and the battery goes from 30-40% to 0% and shuts off within seconds sometimes.

  • My MacBook keeps restarting on its own....

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook Pro (2010) keeps restarting on its own and i get the grey message upon restartup that my computer restarted because of an unknown error, or something to that effect.  I actually have taken it to Mac Hollywood, an authorized Apple repair facility but they were totally useless and said they didnt encounter that problem although I insisted that it was an issue.  Anyway, they grudgingly replaced the hard drive but after getting it (clean install) it happened again before I even got the setup complete!  Can anyone please please help me??  I do have the latest crash log and can post it to make it easier and hope that info helps.  Thank you in advance

Thank you Clinton for such a fast reply!  I actually did purchase AppleCare and even forwarded some logs to AppleCare support, but they all insisted it "probably" is/was a hard drive failure.  Even that authorized center didnt find or even suggest that my MacBook has any problems at all!  I will definitely let AppleCare know that a wise forum member mentioned to watch out for a GPU problem!
    Thanks so much!

  • [SOLVED] Local Hosting Using a Dynamic DNS

I've been trying to self host a domain to use owncloud with, through www.mydomainname/owncloud.com or something similar. I've gotten a LAMP set up with a virtual host, have signed up with https://freedns.afraid.org/, set the afraid nameservers, set my IP as an A record through my domain provider and have tried to install a dynamic DNS client on my server computer, though I have not gotten successful results. On my LAMP I've set a virtual host for my domain and I've been able to connect to it locally but not outside of my network. I was able to ping my domain that would in result ping my home IP address but now I get an unknown host. I've also tried to set up my DDWRT router with the provided dyndns. At this point I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly.
Another issue I've been having has been finding a working dyndns client, afraid-dyndns-uv from the AUR gives me a hash error, and the only promising client I've been able to find is freedns-afraid, but it's an RPM package and I don't know how to make use of the files in the tarball.
I can provide any needed configs, though I don't think that a config would be an error as I've been able to start up my httpd service and connect to it locally perfectly fine. I would greatly appreciate any help c:

0X1A wrote:Alright, so the problem with not being able to ping my IP again was with my registrar nameservers, I had to remove the provided nameservers from them and only use the afraid ones. Now I can ping my IP address but I still can't connect to my domain through my LAMP so now I'm guessing it's either a port forwarding issue or a issue with my apache configuration. What exactly should I have on my httpd conf? I have the ServerName set to my domain name, is there something I'm missing?
My "ServerName" isn't set to anything particularly special. It's "archsystem:80", which is what I call my computer locally. Here's the entire file for reference:

  • Router keep restarting.

    Hello,
I have a home hub 1 and recently, it frequently keeps restarting. It's done it 4 times so far today.
I tried phoning support when it first happened, but they arent much use.
Firstly they ask if my hub is a black one with blue lights or a white one with green lights. Straight away, this causes a problem, as mine is black with green lights. The people in the call center refuse to believe this exists.
Secondly, they always ask me to clear the cache in internet explorer. How this helps I don't know. I have 3 computers and a server. All of them loose internet access while hub is restarting, and none of them use internet explorer. 2 use firefox, one uses opera and one uses Chrome. So at this point I usually give up.
Are there any known issues to why a home hub would keep restarting?

It is definately a v1 home hub but in black. It was a limited edition one they did when I first sined up in 2007. Like this one:
    But without the phone.

  • Sky Hub keeps disconnecting... please help? New customer...

Hello there, I am a new customer to Sky only joining last month, and  my broadband hub keeps disconnecting. I use wifi which is normally good, but the last week or so, every day our hub shows an Orange face, which I know sometimes means it's updating, so I leave it for one hour or more,  and it still does  not show white and we cannot connect to wifi. We have to restart the modem everytime for it to work, and have to keep doing this every day now... please help? As i dont think we should have to keep restarting our hub everyday for it to work. Many thanks,Hayley

That might well be one of the most ridiculous posts I've seen on here.
If you want help then provide us with more information including your router statistics, the exact issue/issues your having along with what Sky have so far done to try to rectify them.

You have added third party RAM to your computer. The first thing I would look at is that, many kernel panics are caused by RAM which can be:
Incorrect RAM (iMacs are extremely sensitive to this)
    Failed RAM
    Unseated RAM
Please removed the upgraded RAM that was added to the machine and then retest. If the machine works OK, that confirms it's a RAM issue.
On these forums the experienced users tend to all agree that RAM should come from a reputable supplier such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial.

What happens when you install the original RAM?
    A 2009 15" model identifier 5.3 MBP will accept RAM with the following specifications:  204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
You have installed RAM with these specifications;  DDR3, 1333 MHz.  Should you install with the correct specifications, the MBP will probably operate correctly.
The best sources of Man compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.
