HUD color picker in CS6
I am seeing something very strange when I attempt to access the HUD color picker in PS CS6. The picker only displays when I have the PS Preferences box open. If I use the keyboard shortcut of 'control+option+cmd click' with only the image open minus the Preferences I get nothing.
I am using a MacPro with NVIDIA GeForce 320M.
Any ideas as to how to fix?
The HUD colour picker doesn't appear when certain tools are active. It won't appear with Move Tool or Rectangular Marquee, for example, but it should appear with most tools. I'm using the same GPU with OS X 10.6.8.

the HUD color picker is pretty useful, but it's buried under a complicated shortcut (shift+alt+ctrl+right button) all held down at the same time. When all buttons are released, the color picker disappears.
Here's my question: when the picker is visible, the saturation and value automatically change as you simply hover the cursor anywhere within the 'square' portion of its window. (The color ring is on the outer edges, and I'll get to that). You don't need to click on the picker to choose a new saturation or value; you only need to hover ontop of the new saturation/value and then release the buttons when you're ontop of the saturation/value that you'd like to select. As you hover within the window, the saturation/value is automatically updating in real time depending on what location your cursor is ontop of within the square portion of the window. But the problem is that when the picker first becomes visible, the cursor is automatically placed directly in the center of its window. So when you hover the cursor to the outer edges where the color ring is (in order to shift the hue), it is also shifting the saturation/value as you pull the cursor from the center of the HUD window over to the ring on the outside. Hope this makes sense.
How do you use the HUD color picker to shift only the hue without affecting the saturation/value?well, I've managed to re-map the entire process since starting this thread (using AutoHotKey). Here's what I do now:
hold down 'b' on the keyboard (hold it down, not press+release) and the standard photoshop color picker window appears. I can now choose my color, hue, and saturation (as normal). No worrying about values or saturations shifting; this is the default color picker window.
then, release 'b' and the color picker window disappears. This is essentially *identical* to the HUD color picker function, except that there are 2 improvements:
-you no longer need to press 4 keys to get it to appear (shift+ctrl+alt+right button) - you only need to hold down 'b' on the keyboard
-when you release 'b', the color picker window disappears, exactly the same way the the HUD color picker does.
The only drawback I would suppose, is that's it's a fraction slower - not *quite* as fast as the HUD color picker, but that would be nitpicking. Still works fast, and great.
But with the HUD color picker, I would still like to know if there's a way to keep the same sat/value while only shifting the hue... i find it hard to believe that Adobe implemented this HUD color wheel with such a major flaw... I'm thinking it's got to be something I'm doing wrong -
Hud color picker doesn't change
Hi
i tried different hud color picker , but it's the alway the same shape

w7 32bitthanks you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for the manual i clicked help F1 and download the pdf , is in the pdf all the help that i see online?
but is there a pdf with all the shortcut of cs5 ?
i remember there is a reg key to add to cs4 to go back to the default shortkey
is there ony for cs5? -
cs5 recently installed on mac at workplace. I don't seem to be able to switch form the wheel in preferences. Have chose strip, but still have wheel on restart of app. What I would like more is to be able to turn it off, I find it really annoying.I know if I turn off the gpu stuff it goes away, but the zoom thing is nice. Any answer?
BTW,
The HUD Color Picker is not the same as the Eyedropper tool sampling ring. I assumed you were talking about the sampling ring and wanted to turn it off. If you are talking about the HUD color picker not changing from Hue Wheel to Hue Strip, sorry for my misunderstanding. I'm not sure what might be the underlying issue for that case.
See this in the CS5 Help for more info:

thx,

I am using CS6 and I can't get the "Show Sampling Ring" to accept the check mark to make it active. I have an image up I am on the background layer and I have the Eye Dropper selected. I have tried the shortcut of alt + shift and right clicking and that doesn't work either. My video card is a NVIDIA and I thought I would try and update the drivers for that but I don't know how to do it for that card. I also am not sure if I should check or not check Use Graphics Processor under Preferrences which I tried both ways and it doesn't make any difference. Any help would be appreciated.
65alias, what you're experiencing sounds like classical problems with drivers.
Ensure you have updated your video driver, and if you don't have the latest tablet driver you'll want to remove it and install the latest from the Wacom web site (i.e., don't update it in place, specifically remove then install).

Can I pop out the color picker in Photoshop CS6?
Hey everyone,
I am doing digital painting in Photoshop CS6, and would love it if I could keep my color picker open in a separate window. Does anyone know how to do this? I've seen an artist named Feng Zu do this in a painting tutorial video, but he doesn't explain how.
Thanks! You can also get to a HUD (Heads Up Display) version of the Color Picker by holding down the Control+Option+Command keys on a Mac (Alt+Shift+Right Click on a PC, I believe)
But I personally find the HUD color picker unintuitive and problematic.
If you find a way to keep a floating Color Picker window, post back. That could be convenient. -
Shift-Alt-Right Click-Drag doesn't bring up the Color Picker HUD. Someone suggested making sure "Enabale OpenGL Drawing" box is checked, but tis greyed out (says that Photoshop Standard" not supported). Is this the problem? What is Photoshop "Standard" and how do I find out if I have it?
Good day!
What is Photoshop "Standard" and how do I find out if I have it?
Photoshop CS5 can be licensed as Extended or Standard; in Standard several features are deactivated, but I don’t think the HUD Color Picker is one of those.
Check out Photoshop > About Photoshop to see if you have Photoshop Extended.
Someone suggested making sure "Enabale OpenGL Drawing" box is checked, but tis greyed out
What is your GPU?
If it is not on this list it may be too »old« to provide OpenGL.

I have PS CS5 (version 12.0.4x32). The Color PIcker HUD doesn't seem to work (shift-alt-right click). The Enable OpenGL Drawing box is greyed out and there's a note that PS "Standard" not supported. What's going on? Do I have aversion of PS that doesn't support the Color HUD? How do I find out if I have PS "Standard" How can I fix this?
At your suggestion, I went to Help > System Info, and here's everything that I found. Note that OpenGL Drawing is now enabled (it was greyed out before but not anymore, I don't know why), but when I click "Advanced Settings" I find that Mode is set to "Basic" and it's greyed out (i.e. I can't change it). The HUD color picker still does not work. BTW, I'm very appreciative of the help and attention you're giving to this. Thanks.

Can't type Pantone values in the Color Picker with Ai CS6
Hi Illustrators,
I'm running Design and Web Premium CS6 on a Windows 7 machine. I was recently using Ai's Recolor Artwork dialogue for a CMYK document. I wanted to convert my 4 color artwork to Pantone solid coated. I decided to chose some different Pantones. In older versions of Illustrator I could easily open the Color Picker, click on a Pantone value and then just type in a new value to scroll to it. This is no longer the case with Ai CS6.
Does anyone know of a work around? Thanks for getting back. It works on Photoshop CS6 (64bt) but not so with Ai
As long as I'm griping on lost features. Here's another great one that's gone with the CS6 wind...
In the Swatch Options, you used to be able to scroll through the Color Modes by holding Shift and clicking on the square color preview icon. You used to also be able to get the compliment on the fly by holding Control (Windows) / Command (Mac) and clicking on the same icon. Neither feature works anymore. -
My Adobe Flash CS6 Color Picker has ODD colors. I'm using Mac Mini OSX 10.8.1. Is there a fix?
I click on the color picker and where I have seen the normal #0000ff blue color on my windows computer, this mac Mountain lion version shows a purple-ish color. Oddly, If I enter the hex # into the color picker, and use it as a fill, the correct color displays on the stage but when i use the eyedropper on that color, it shows it as the purple color again on the toolbar.
I've seen a similar thing like this happen when using adobe photoshop. However, the usual solution is to just make the managed color profile set to monitor RGB. The only downside with Flash is there is no preference to set that. The color palette in Adobe Photoshop displays as it should with the correct blue.
I should also note that I'm using a Samsung 941bw monitor with my mac mini which could also be part of the problem.
I figured i'd make this post anyway just in case it's the OS & Adobe Flash CS6 and not the monitor.
I've included a screenshot as well that shows that i've chosen the purple color and then made a rectangle shape on the stage and it comes out blue.
Thanks ahead for your response(s)
-LineSeems misleading that on the adobe site for Adobe Flash CS6 it says:
System requirements:
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X Mountain Lion (v10.8) when installed on Intel based systems.** -
PS CS6: stroke color picker preview in real time not working
re: NEW color picker stroke color not updating in real time (previewing).
Is it me or has the stroke color preview been removed in CS6 or is there a setting that needs to be changed to enable it?
The problem: When I create a shape layer, press enter and then chose a stroke color from the color picker, I select a color but it doesnt update the stroke color until I press enter. I'm sure it used to change in real time as you clicked on the color picker panel before accepting it.
Any sugestions or ideas as to whats going on or am I going mad?
Further update: This is when creating a shape but using the new stroke feature in the properties bar at the top (the one which gives you the new fancy options like having a dashed, transparent or gradiented stroke) and not the traditional method of adding it as an effect. This still shows a real time update, but the new method doesnt.Curt Y wrote:

You're then moving the colour picker dialogue box to one side so you can see he shape created, and you've then tried clicking on different colours and the border color has changed after each click (but before you press OK)?
If thats working so the color changes in real time for you, then unfortunatley I've got a problem with my version.
Using Win7 CS6 extended, and following your instructions it works for me.
Border changes withn I click on color pallet with color picker.
Odd, same version/ O.S. here, thanks for that though Curt Y. Are you sure you're not clicking on the preset colours and actually using the color picker dialogue box.
I've been in a bit of a rush here at the office and appologise for not being clearer and posting a screencap earlier.
To clarify, its the Cyan dialogue box not the orange box I'm talking about (nice choice of colours I know ). The top right icon in the organge box with the colours in is how you get to it. -
Color Picker in Flash CS6 Changing My Picked Color
Program: Flash CS6
OS: Mountain Lion
Hardware: Intel MacBook Pro 2012
Steps to recreate issue:
1. Paint a color on the stage (brown seems to have the most dramatic results)
2. Use the color picker to sample the (brown) color from the stage
3. Use the paint bucket to apply the selected color to the stage
Result: the color painted from the sample color is not the color that has been originally sampled.
If you then sample the new color you have just applied, it again changes the color. Repeating this process over and over again eventually turns the color into the brightest red on the color palette.
Is anyone else have this issue or know how to correct it?
UPDATED: Attached is a link to the video of the issue in progress. For whatever reason my cursor doesnt show up correctly in the video, but what I am doing is using the color picker to sample the color and then painting the sampled color. As you can see from the video, the color becomes more and more red until it maxs out, even though I am just sampling the same color over and over again. The color on the left is the control color (the one that I originally sample) and the color on the right illustrates the bug.

http://vid.ly/5x8u6dI'm updating this thread mainly because it's the only thread I could find that describes my exact issue. I am having this problem. When I select a color using the color picker, it settles on a different, lighter color. THIS HAPPENS EVEN WHEN I ENTER THE HEX CODE VALUE. It's like Flash is auto-correcting a problem that doesn't exist. Help? This is becoming a serious problem for me!
Also Flash CS6, Mac OS X (10.8.2). The monitor I'm using shouldn't be relevant; Flash is literally changing the hex code value after I type it in or select it.
EDIT: Just did some research, found out that Flash isn't 10.8 compatible. When is that going to be fixed? -
Color Picker Stops Working in DW CS6
Every so often, when I use the color picker from within Dreamweaver CS6 to select a color from an image or background, etc., then try to change that color (slightly change the brightness up or down using the system color sliders), it will act as if it is changing the color in the slider, but when I click OK, the color does not change. After many frustrating attempts to do it over, I will quit out of Dreamweaver and go back in, but it still will not work for me. I just experimented to see if it is system wide. So I opened Fireworks, tried the same change and it worked fine in there. Maybe Fireworks uses a different Mac system setting or something. But not sure what the fix is. I think I end up restarting my computer to get it to work again. Can't remember how it starts working again. But this happens often to me. Has anyone else experienced this and know the work around? I am using DW6, iMac 2.8 Ghz Core i5, 16 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.7.5.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
BrianThanks, Preran. Here are some screen shots.

Drawbacks to the new CS6 Color Picker?
What do people think about the new color picker in Fireworks CS6?
I like the new larger swatches and default palette: a revised "Color Cubes" layout that includes non-web-safe colors and a selection of warm and cool greys/neutrals. I also like the option to view and enter RGB values and to specify transparency (for fill and stroke separately)
However, one thing I'm missing is the option to change the swatches from within the color picker itself. Previously, it was possible to choose from a standard set of color swatch layouts or the Swatches palette itself, via a small fly-out menu.
Now, that option is gone. The color picker simply picks up whatever palette is currently loaded into Swatches (except for masks, which still draw from a separate greyscale palette). To load a new palette into the color picker, you need to change the contents of the Swatches palette itself. This means a little less freedom for the user.
For example, if you've added a few custom swatches into your Swatches palette, but then decide you'd like to switch the color picker layout, you'll lose those custom swatches—unless you go through the extra step of saving them as a palette. Frankly, in Fireworks, I don't even know how to quickly delete a large number of swatches in order to save a custom palette like this. (The only option I'm aware of is to Command-click, which deletes a single swatch at a time; this requires a lot of patience.)
Another aspect that concerns me is the contextual nature of the Fill color picker. Accessed from the toolbar, a complete a set of fill options are offered, which is very convenient; you can quickly choose between No Fill, Solid Fill, Gradient Fill and Pattern Fill. But this is not the case when you access the Fill color picker from within the Properties Inspector. In particular, the No Fill option is missing, whereas this used to be the place to make this change. Users who to try to set the Fill to None here may wind up inadvertently sampling colors when they try to click on the No Fill option below, while the color picker is still open.
Thinking about it, there's plenty of room here; I think the No Fill option should be added back in to the color picker within the Properties Inspector—much as it's already included for Stroke.
Finally, I'm not saying that I used it a lot (I didn't), but I always liked having the Web Dither fill option; it's definitely a unique, textured look that's not commonly available in other applications. It's gone now.
The thing is, there's room for it. So why take away a feature like this?Hi All:
Apologies for the cross-post, but I felt it important it add my message in this thread as well.
Just a note regarding the wishform. Your detailed input on that form is important and I really appreicate you taking the time to help make Fireworks a better product. So thank you for filing these bugs/concerns.
Keep in mind that even though one person may have indicated they filed the bug, you should also file your own bug on the issue if you are experiencing problems. This reporting makes the engineers aware of how prevalent the issue is and helps to prioritize which bugs get addressed first. Yes, I know, in an ideal world, they'd ALL be marked as high priority, but that's seldom the case with anything. Squeeky wheel gets the grease, etc...
While filing the bug doesn't necessarily mean you will personally hear from the engineering team, this doesn't diminish the importance of using the wishlist/bug reort form. This is a quote from the form itself:
>>We normally do not send personal replies to feature requests or bug reports. We do, however, read each and every message. We use the information to improve our products and services. Your comments, suggestions, and ideas for improvements are very important to us. We appreciate you taking the time to send us this information.<<
That said, I'm making an effort to bring these threads to the attention of the FW team, and if I hear anything myself, I'll be sure to let you know.

"Dreamweaver CS6" color picker error
Currently I am using “Dreamweaver CS6” Version. I got an error when I selecting the color picker in the application it went to exit mode could you please let me know how to fix this issue. Thanks
Note : Pleases find the error screenshot for the attached below.Does it do this every time you try to select the color picker or was this the first crash you've had from it?
A lot of "just started happening" issues can be cleared up by clearing out the program cache file/renaming the personal configuration folder...
Deleting a corrupted cache file
If that doesn't help, sometimes a conflict in your installed extensions or preferences may be causing an issue. This process resets DW back to the factory defaults...
Restore preferences | Dreamweaver CS4, CS5, CS5.5, CS6
If neither one of those work, a fresh install using the Cleaner Tool will typically get DW to 100%...
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
