For no reason and all of a sudden when i hover over a picture in Aperture I get a HUD window showing me info about the picture.... This is really annoying, how do I stop this happening? I must have pressed something as it didn't happen earlier but having gone through all the options I can't see where to turn it off!
thanks

I must have pressed something
Yup: T. Press it again and you're good as gold...

  • HUD Display (edge sharpening)

I frequently use the edge sharpening controls. I would like to know if there is a way to keep these controls permanently in the HUD display, along with other frequently used controls such as exposure, contrast, white balance, etc. Unlike the regular sharpening adjustment, I have to select edge sharpening from the HUD drop down menu each time I want to use it. As soon as I move on to another image, it disappears from my HUD window. There must be a way to select frequently used adjustments in the HUD window permanently isn't there? I can't figure out how to do it. I am NOT talking about saving presets. I understand how to do that. This would be a big timesaver.

Steve- I can't thank you enough. This has been bugging me for ages. I just never got around to researching it on the discussion boards til now. I am a bit technically challenged When I opened the AdjustmentsDefaulsts.plist it was opening by default with OmniOutliner. After reading the old threads on this topic I see someone else had the same problem. I went back and opened it with Text Edit and added RKProSharpenOperation to the list and voila! Upon re-launching Aperture the edge sharpen adjustment is permanently in my HUD. To anyone else reading this, you must make sure to enter it EXACTLY the same as the other items on the list, in other words like this:
<string>RKProSharpenOperation</string> The first time I tried I left out the forward slash in the second <string> and it didn't work.

  • Using photoshop elements 9 as an external editor - after saving in Photoshop the results do not display in Aperture

I set up my external editor as Photoshop Elements 9, I follow the instructions to edit a selected image in the external editor. When finished editing in Photoshop, I hit Save (not Save As), and go back to Aperture, and the work I did in Photoshop does not display in Aperture. Is there anything else I need to do to make the work I did in Photoshop display in Aperture?

I had the same problem with PSE 10, and this soution worked for me.  Thanks.  But is this the real answer?  Isn't there a way to save the file without having to add an "f" to the suffix?  It doesn't seem to make sense to me.  Is it an Aperture problem or PSE?  I went to the Apple store amnd the so-called aperture/photoshop expert spent an hour trying to figure it out and finally got the answer by reading this post!!!

  • No preview displayed in Aperture and Preview after Lion "upgrade"

    Hi everyone,
something (well, maybe many things) has been blown by Lion...I'm only just trying to figure out what exactly is.
Generally the system performs well but I have a big issue with previews within Aperture 3 and in Preview/Quicklook itself.
I'm testing Lion onto a late 2009 unibody macbookpro 13", 2.0 ghz, 8gb Ram; Aperture library is managed, around 100gb, all files are from Canon 30D and 350D, plus some jpegs and videos from a Powershot A620 (I didn't test the videos imported in Aperture yet, in SnowLeopard everything was fine).
In Aperture 3 (I have upgraded to 3.1.3 before installing Lion) my Canon 30D files are displayed correctly both in browser and viewer...Canon 350D files (raw images) aren't...well, the small thumbnail in the browser view is looking fine but when I double click to display the large image..it suddenly disappear! gray or black background, no image at all...back to browser view and the small thumbnail correctly display the image.
So i tried to regenerate the preview...nothing, same behaviour...if I press P for quick preview nothing is displayed, I get nothing even if I press M for master image.
Ok, I said...let's try this...I decide to export a photo, as master, onto the desktop...fine, the image icon is good, correctly displaying the image thumbnail...if I select it and press the spacebar i obtain ...absolutely nothing,a gray window that should be my image.
This happens also for the 30D files when I export them ...within Aperture they're good.
I also tried to export a version (jpeg)...all I obtain is a totally black jpeg.
Seems that Preview is not working anymore or uncapable to display any raw format, only jpegs are correctly displayed, I mean original jpeg shot.
I went through all the basic library maintenance for Aperture, repaired system permission before and after Lion installation...nothing changes.
Anyone experiencing a similar behaviour under Lion? Is Preview not working only in my system? Any suggestion?
I'm trying to find something to fix this...I have Time machine backups, Aperture vault backups so reverting back to SL is only a matter of patience and time...but I would like to stick with Lion and keep testing.
Any help or suggestion will be appreciated...I'm also searching for similiar behaviour (mostly for the problem with Preview) in the Lion OSX forum, this is heavily affecting Aperture.
    Best regards,
    Alberto

I found a solution that worked for me. Seems like my firewall did not accept the afp connection permissions anymore after installing lion... Since everything worked well turning off the firewall.
So if you don't want to keep your firewall disactivated here is what worked for me:
    - Leave your firewall activated.
    - Turn OFF afp file sharing in the sistem prefs
    - Restart your Machine
    - Turn ON afp file sharing
    - You should now get a message if you want to accept afp connections...
    - click YES
Thats it... Everything fine on my network now.

  • Pictures Not Displaying When Aperture Is Opened.

I recently installed the latest update for Aperture which was supposed to help with RAW format pictures. Last night when I opened Aperture to find a picture, none of my pictures would display. The libraries that came with Aperture would display but nothing from my library would come up.
Any suggestions on solving this problem. The library does not seem to be corrupted because I can access it through iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    Veryl

I guess I wasn't clear with my question.
I am using Aperture 2.1.2. What I installed was the update fix to make Aperture more compatible with some RAW formats. It was one of the regular Apple software updates that they send out periodically.
Up until now, I have opened Aperture and it has shown the photos in my library in the browser and viewer. Now when I open it, that whole area is grey and there are no pictures. From past sad experience, I always leave data for a program in the default location. Nothing has changed except the installation of the RAW update.
Has anyone had a similar problem?
    Thanks,
    Veryl

  • Display and Aperture

I am using my 32 inch HD TV as the monitor for my Mac mini. I am not sure if I am adjusting the colours correctly. Are their gadgets available to calibrate my display.
    Or
Is it a must that I should have a proper computer monitor before adjusting my pictures with Aperture.
    Badrakumar

For working on at your computer? Cinema Display, by far.
You need to color calibrate it, BTW, with a hardware calibration device like the Eye One Display 2.

  • HUD display for Here Drive...

Garmin has announced a HUD for it's NAVGON applications:
    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/apps/head-up-display-hud-/prod134348.html?utm_source=gar...
It would be TREMENDOUS if we could do something like this with our Lumias.. Even if it were an 'alternate' (i.e. mirrored) display whereby if we mounted the phone on the dash, it would reflect onto the windsheild in readable format.
A BT-enabled projector would be even better....

  • Using multiple displays in Aperture 3 and FCP X

    Hi,
I was looking around apples website and I noticed on the Thunderbolt Display page that they had aperature running with the picture fullscreen on one display and the photo library open on the other, I have 3 displays so I would like to do that.
Does anyone know how to do this in Lion because Fullscreen mode isn't great for Aperture imo.
    http://www.apple.com/displays/
I also notice they have FCP X with three displays with the clips, timeline, and preview window all on seperate displays and if anyone knows if you can do that with iMovie '11 it would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Blake

I think the preview window you see in the FCP 3 displays setup is a QuickTime window, not a FCP window.
In Aperture you can currently use only 2 displays, not three.

  • Photoshop layers do not display in Aperture

    Hi folks.
I searched the forum for something on this but didn't find anything.
I just opened a JPG in my external editor (PS CS2), made some adjustments, saved and closed. In Aperture, the image (and thumbnail) do not represent the PS image.
I have a layered PS file - top layer is a subject cut out from the b/g layer, which I have blurred/desaturated and is the bottom layer.
The file is RGB/8-bit and both layers visible. In Aperture, I see the subject, but in the thumbnail, the b/g is white; in the main image, the b/g is black. The actual b/g does not display.
Any suggestions why/how to correct without flattening the image in PS?
    Thanks
    Tony.
    iMac2GHz1.5GB RAM*20; PowerBook1.5GHz2GB RAM; iPod 10GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for the efforts - much appreciated.
The only 'Ask' option I have in CS2 preferences is for layered TIF files. From memory, I don't believe I get asked anything by PS when I exit, other than to save.
The only other thing worth mentioning is that in Aperture prefs, I have External Editor File Format set to PSD - presumably TIF doesn't enter into the equasion and so I'm never prompted per the earlier-mentioned PS setting.
I changed the APerture setting to TIFF and re-opened my problematic image in PS. I made a subtle change just to force a save, and again - was not prompted for anything other than to save. Back in APerture, I see no change.
The file itself has 3 layers - Background (orig color image); layer 2 is a B&W version of the bg...one part of the image was masked to preserve its original (bg) color; the third layer is an Old Photo filter effect, again with part of the image masked to preserve the original color. The mask itself was saved as a channel. I'll be happy to send you the PSD if you like - email me at tonygoulding-at-mac.com.
    Thanks
    Tony.

  • I am unable to get the HUD display to appear...help

My first use of my new CS5 is was to try the new HUD color picker.  I picked a brush tool...held down shift+alt+right-click and went of the image and held it.  Nothing happened.  I just get a cursor with the eye-dropper and a plus sign onder it and a little circle above it.  I watched it on Lynda.com. but was unable to replicate what I saw.  I tried it on my laptop and my desktop.  Both...nothing.  I set it to both wheel and strip in preferences.
    Need help with this...thanks.

I tried to set this in preferences...but it will not allow me to with the laptop.  I upgraded the drivers to the desktop and it works there...but the Fujitsu T5010 does not have the openGL capabilities needed.
Thanks for the input.  Sure appreicate that.

  • Media Browser Displays Partial Aperture Library

I have a large Aperture Library (80K photos), but when I use the Media browser in other apps (Pages, Outlook, etc.), only about 1100 of the photos are visible. There are no photos left to process in Aperture. Since the issue impacts both Pages and Outlook, I figure it must be an Aperture issue. I'm running the most current release (3.1.1).
Any advice would be appreciated . . .

More detail would certainly help such as is the library referenced or managed. Also is there anything common to the 1100 that do appear?
    Allan

  • Aperture doesn't display some managed masters

My Aperture 3.5.1 library has 11,000 referenced masters plus  1000 managed masters (mostly images saved from shared photo streams). Recently, Aperture has started listing some of the managed masters as missing. I replace them from backups but then other managed masters go missing (usually just after I import some new managed images). Referenced masters never go missing.  I have tried all three library repair options including rebuilding the database, but the problem keeps recurring. I've checked the drive with Disk Utility and found no problems.
Today, I tried using "Relocate Masters" to move all 1000 managed masters to a folder on the same drive and then discovered that the Masters folder in the library package still contained over 3000 photos that had not been moved and are not displayed by Aperture when I search for managed masters. Presumably, these are the files that went missing. Rebuilding the library located 16,0000 versons in the progress bar but the final rebuilt library displays only 12,000 versions even with all stacks open and "Showing All".
I'm tempted to manually drag the 3000 "forgotton"  masters from the Masters folder using the Finder and then try a rebuild. Everything else is working and I have Time Machine and other backups available in case this causes major problems. Alternatively, I could just leave the 1.6 GB of orphaned files alone and stop using managed masters entirely.
Any ideas on why these managed files are not recognized by Aperture?

I think I have figured out where the “orphaned" photos in the managed masters folder came from.
To recapitulate: I emptied the Masters folder inside the library package by using finder to drag all images to the system trash and then emptied the trash.
I then rebuilt the Aperture library. When I turned on iCloud in Aperture preferences it spent 30 minutes downloading the shared photo streams from my children.
Each photo stream was copied to the Aperture Masters folder in its own folder. Example:
Only the single image in the top folder (which corresponds to “My Photo Stream”) shows up when I search for managed masters in Aperture. The others are hidden from the user. Thus, the images from the shared photo streams ARE NOT MANAGED FILES despite being in the Masters folder.  This appears to be by design.
When I unsubscribe from a shared photo stream, the corresponding folder is deleted from the managed masters folder.  Thus, Aperture in OS X appears to use the managed-masters folder for temporary storage of shared streams.  I suspect that the database that keeps track of these files may have become corrupted in my library. We’ll see if deleting these files and rebuilding the library fixes the problem.
These same photo stream images were also downloaded to the user Library at ~/Users/dickweis/Library/Application\ Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub/. However, there are many older images in this location that have not been modified in years and were not deleted when I deleted the contents of my photo stream and turned off iCloud sharing in Aperture.
Léonie, you previously advised using Aperture to delete these files (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/19375439#19375439). However, most of these files are no longer accessible to Aperture or iPhoto and appear to be orphans. If I continue to have problems, I will be tempted to drag these to the system trash to see if it helps (I have saved the images I want to keep). Any advice here would be welcome.

  • Aperture 3 Display Bug and Export to Flickr Bug

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and if so what systems do you have and what graphics card are you using?
The issue is the way images are displayed in Aperture. There seems to have been a change in the anti-aliasing between 2 and 3 so than now images with strong highlights display nasty aliasing artefacts and black ringing around highlight edges. It's as if Images are being over-sharpened. Also, when you first move to an Image it displays perfectly fine while it’s loading then when it’s finished it pops into the over sharp aliased version.
I'm having this issue on my iMac 24" running a ATI RadeonHD2600. It seems to only show when the onscreen display is zoomed out to 25% or less. If you go to fullscreen the artefacts disappear on landscape oriented images but remain on portrait. If you zoom in, once you pass a certain zoom factor they disappear.
I have posted some samples of the artefacts here - as well as what they should look like.
    http://www.thomas-fitzgerald.net/2010/04/28/aperture-3-is-really-ticking-me-off/
    and here
    http://theapertureblog.com/2010/03/29/aperture-display-bug/
The bigger issue is that when exporting using the built in fickr tool it uses the same antialiasing and so over sharpens and degrades images the same way.
The problem is not always apparent and it really only shows with images containing high contrast areas, particularly if they clip to white. I would really like to know if this is limited to certain graphics cards as I've talked to someone who has this issue when using the faster gfx card on their macbook pro but not when they turn on the slower one.
If I need to upgrade my mac to make this issue go away then so be it but I'd really like to hear form others who may have seen it?

I have had issues with Aperture's anti-aliasing performance in the Viewer since version 1.5.
To summarize, Aperture's Viewer produces quite jagged edges from Canon RAW files compared to Preview's and Lightroom's renderings of the exact same files. There doesn't seem to be any radical improvements with the 3.x upgrades, and aliasing performance didn't seem to be affected by the updates to Apple's Canon RAW converter (I reprocessed). Images that I had a problem with are still problematic.
I thought that [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=669881&tstart=0] referring to Aperture 1.5 laid out the issues pretty clearly and I was surprised at how little other users were affected by it (or so I infer from the number of responses.)
Until your post I had not looked specifically at Aperture 3.x. I haven't been able to exactly reproduce the issues I had (so many versions ago...) in Aperture 1.5 and it seems the situation has improved a bit.
Aperture still produces a much sharper rendering than Preview, though the aliased edges are not as prominent. To recap from Aperture 1.5:
And here's what I see in Aperture 3 on the same image:
Which looks about the same to me on near-horizontal lines, but much better on the high-contrast vertical lines (check upper left corner of the frame).
And today's Preview 5.0.2 rendering of the RAW image is even softer and less contrast-y than back in the day:

  • Aperture with triple display?

Does anyone use Aperture with three monitors? I just connected a third display and Aperture seems confused and there seem to be bugs.
"Secondary display" seems to mean two rightmost monitors for me.
When cropping, I sometimes see the same crop box on both of them, but with different photos?
I'd like Aperture to just forget the third display — is that possible?

Regrettably, I was having the same issue. I would have been fine having Aperture 3 leave my third monitor alone. DVD player, iTunes, Hulu, Front Row, etc. all seem to "mute' that third monitor, but I had a number of bugs including hanging and crashes.
I was using a displaylink USB card, which may have been partly to blame. Best to get feedback from someone running a Mac Pro, or someone with a MBP that has an more supported express card and video driver combination.
I ended up having to remember to unplug the adapter before I launched Aperture 2. I scrapped the two monitors for a large monitor for that reason shortly before Aperture 3 came out.

I want to run Aperture on display 1 and 2, and Keynote on display 3.  When Aperture is active display 1 has most of the application, and both of the other displays show images of whatever is selected on display 1.  How can I limit aperture to just two displays.

    Hi a.
What ì assume John means to say is you have to block access to your "guest accounts". What John describes is what you should use for any folders and files you keep outside the Home folder of your Admin account. There's also a more advanced thingy called Access Control Lists, but I'm not going to discuss that here.
Inside your Admin account's Home folder things work a bit differently: by default, at least on my Macs, an account (even it's Administrator) doesn't have access to another accounts data except for the Public and Sites folders. All other folders are unaccessible, which is indicated by a small stop sign in the lower left corner of the folder. Exception are of course folders are that you shared on purpose through File Sharing in the System Preferences menu.
You also talk about Applications. I don't have experience with this but I believe you can create an Applications or Application/Utilities folder in your Admin account's Home folder. In this case you'll be the only one to have access to the software installed. I'm quite sure not all applications support this, and application updates might not succeed.
Which brings me to a question: you talk about "guest accounts": what is the purpose you created them? If it's just to discover the world of Mac OS X, do enable login on a Mac OS X Guest Account: good riddance of the stuff they created when they log out. If it's a bit more don't hesitate to share your thoughts. Note that these forums are in general very helpful.
