Huge 114GB and 53GB Kernel logs

Hi all,
I was wondering why my iMac had such a small amount of free space and took a look at it using Disk Inventory X. Apparently I have two log files in private/var/log that are huge. kernel.log.0 which weighs in at 114GB and kernel.log.1 at 53GB. What looks to be an active kernel.log is only 813KB. I'm not very experienced in this area of the mac so while this looks highly fishy to me, I'm not sure what to do about it. The installation is a recent clean install and the machine only a few months old.
Any thoughts on how I can reclaim the disk space? Can these log files be safely deleted and if so how? And is there likely to be a wider problem that this is a symptom of? Many thanks in advance.
MrGatsby

Can these log files be safely deleted and if so how?
Yes, using Go to Folder in the Finder's Go menu to navigate to /private/var/log .
is there likely to be a wider problem that this is a symptom of?
Double-click one of the files and look for one or more lines repeated many times.

    Situation:
Since a few weeks I'm having a new little home server. An intel atom d525 cpu with 2gb ram, which seems to be a nice compromise between speed, price and power consumption. I'm wanting to use this server mainly as file server (backup, bulk data), download server, automatic backups, video streaming for the TV and my computer, mpd server and just for some experiments.
For the data I've got 2 disks, 2Tb each in a mdadm raid1 set with a layer of lvm and ext4 as the filesystem. I've used a brand new usb stick of 8Gb for the / filesystem. I know usb sticks are not made to be used as a / filesystem, but it should work and when the stick wears out (years?) I can replace it easily and cheap.
    First signs of problems:
After the arch install I went ahead and installed some services. Everything seemed to be fine and I was really happy with the new server. Until after 2-3 days uptime it 'crashed'. I didn't bother looking in the logs or whatever, so I just gave it a fine reset and it went up without troubles. Again 2-3 days later it crashed again. I plugged in the monitor again and it seemed to be the / file system giving some troubles. After some io errors on the / it remounted itself read only, which gives me an unusable server. After some ext4 checks, it happened again the reboot after.
After that I decided it must be either the usb stick or the usb controller be doing something fishy. I've put the / on an old 2gb usb stick and since then it seems to be running fine (uptime now a weak).
    Untill the / is full:
Strange, the 2gb / is full whilst a week ago when moving the arch install from the old usb stick, it only used about 1300Mb. After some smart usage of du and find I found out that the logs were to blame. Both the kernel.log en everything.log were 300+mb.
I hope there is somebody here who can help me figure out why the logs are getting filled with these messages and how to fix it. And to tell me if there is a serious problem with the raid1 set (mounted on /home), since I need to be able to rely on it to some extends.
    raid set:
    0 8 1 0 active sync /dev/sda1
    1 8 17 1 active sync /dev/sdb1

Especially the lines with 'dirtied inode' do worry me .
Ps: I do know that running archlinux on a server is not 'smart'. Same for using a usb flash device for /. Both are not considered smart choices, but for a home server which doesn't need to have a 100% uptime not always a bad choice and are not the topic of discussion .

There are both log entries about the flash disk and the raid 1 set. The flash disk (sdc) entries don't seem to be critical, but I have no clue why they appeared...
I make a regular backup of my / to protect myself against loss of data due to wear some day. I've ran a little server in the past on a 4gb usb flash medium for several years, without any problems what so ever.

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html The log does reference Airport. Are you using AirPort?
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

I think I have some mismatch between glibc and the kernel now, but the question is: how do I get out of this? This installation is on a VPS and I only have remote access. In case of emergency I can just restore yesterday's backup, but first I'd like to know if there is some other solution.
    Thanks

Lol, I had the same problem just now:) System became completely unusable!
Luckily I found the old glibc package without too much trouble, and with the help of a LiveCD I manually extracted the package and put the old files back in place. All back to normal. Phew!
I'm kinda happy I didn't have to setup a Vserver for it:)
My 10 year old pc, now performing admirably as a simple router, lives on!

  • Mac Mini Audio Intermittent over HDMI, Cuts out with Assertion in kernel.log

Hello. I've been having trouble with a mac mini (Mid 2011) that I bought on Thursday. It's running OSX 10.7. The Mac Mini is the $599 unit.
I've got it hooked up to my Sony BRAVIA HDTV (also this year's model) via HDMI, with audio configured to be delivered via HDMI to the TV alongside video. Initially the audio will play through my TV, but after an hour or two of watching something, it will cut out, and there will be no more sound coming out of the TV from the mac. Ultimately, the only way I can fix it is to reboot the Mac Mini. I've also observed that at about the same time sound cuts out, the following error message appears in kernel.log:
Aug 12 19:21:40 joshs-Mac-mini kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDAWidget at line 3957 goto handler
    Aug 12 19:22:10 --- last message repeated 5 times
As far as I know, assertions failures usually mean software problems (bugs). I suspect I may be encountering a kernel-level bug in Lion, as this error message is showing in kernel.log.
The following is a list of diagnostic steps I've taken:
    - I've double-checked the sound output device in preferences. It didn't spontaneously change from SONY TV (HDMI) after sound cut out.
    - I've tried changing output to the internal speakers. It plays sound from the mac mini (as expected). When I change it back to HDMI, still no sound from the TV.
    - I've tried turning off and back on the tv. No effect.
    - I've tried unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable. No effect.
    - I've tried replacing the HDMI cable with two other alternates. No effect.
    - I've tried other HDMI inputs for my TV with HDMI attached. No effect.
    - Note: I've got a ps3 and xbox360 on the TV that has successfully used the HDMI inputs and cables tested on. They've never had this type of problem, so I don't think there's a problem with the TV.
    - I've tried rebooting the mac and resetting the "PRAM" (Command-Option-P-R before the grey screen on bootup). Sound still cuts out after a while.
    - All updates are applied.
Does anybody else have any ideas about what I could try to fix this? This problem is pretty much a deal breaker, as rebooting the mac mini mid-movie kind of destroys the movie-watching experience.
    Thanks

I'd just like to jump in on this thread to report exactly the same problem.
2011 Mac Mini (the 2.5GHz i5 model) running Lion, Sony Bravia TV, HDMI sounds cuts out after a while with the console error "Aug 15 18:30:25 Mini kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDAWidget at line 3957 goto handler".
Interestingly, after the error occurs, I can still get 5.1 sound through Plex, but not through Quicktime. 2.0 sound and system sounds all fail until I reboot the system.
Any help would be appreciated. I would prefer not to have to return the Mini.
    Thanks.

  • Ask to reset password after booting up for no reason.  Why? When I hit next (because I couldn't do anything else) it rebooted again to my normal start up screen and let me log in like normal.  Worried I have been hacked.  Any way to screen?

When I started up my computer this morning I got a gray screen talking about reseting my password as if I had told it I had forgotten it.  I had no choice but to hit next.  When I did it rebooted and let me log in like normal.  I am worried I have been hacked or something.  How can I tell?

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • All fine and now kernel panic once a week?

After years of never having seen one, I am getting kernel panics about once a week. They seem to occur when I am online. I am running OS 10.6.8 (yes, I know) and have had no problems. I had been running Norton Antivirus (yes, I now know about that too) without incident for a few years but have now removed it. Otherwise nothing has changed except for whenever the last Apple system update was. I am currently up to date, OS not withstanding.
Below is the log for the last panic if anyone is a kernel whisperer:

  • Kernel logs flooded with ACPI messages

I just noticed that my kernel logs are full of messages like the following:
ACPI: EC: non-query interrupt received: switching to interrupt mode
These messages appear harmless enough, but I'd like to get rid of them... I've been Googling and so far haven't been able to find a workaround. Is there one? Would for instance booting with noapic get rid of this?
(I have no need for APIC FWIW, I use a single-core CPU.)

    Gullible Jones,
If you are willing, you should try the latest RC kernel (it runs just fine here).  The GPE storm detection code in drivers/acpi/ec.c was rewritten a few weeks ago, and there was a bug in it.  The latest RC has a fix.

I have bought an used Iphone 5. I dont have the password for the existing login id of the old owner. How do i use the phone and change the log in id?

Unfortunatly the only way that you can get it off is to get the old user to input the password.  You may need to contact that old user and see if he can put the old password in.  hope this helps.

I have another computer that a virus may have taken over and I cannot log into it anymore.  I just downloaded Itunes on a new computer but most of my songs are not on there.  Is there a way to still access or find those songs?  Remotely or another way?  Or do I need to take it to a tech to get my files off of my hard drive?

Edit > Preferences > Store check Music under Automatic Downloads.
Open the iTunes Store from left hand column, then select Purchasedfrom the column on the right, click the Not In My Library button and select the tunes you want to download again.
That said, you seem to be under a misapprehension as to how iTunes works, or at least how it has worked in the past. It has, until recently, been up to you take care of your purchases once they have been downloaded. You had a one-time download which you were reminded to back up. With the recent change to this policy you can at least download your store purchases again, but having a personal backup of your iTunes store purchases, stuff purchased elsewhere and files ripped from your CDs will still be preferable to gathering all the stuff together again in the event of a disaster.
For a backup strategy see this User Tip.

    Hi All,

What is the OS version of the PC you are running  and is it physical machine or virtual machine that is running the HRC client ..
OS Version Windows 7 Home Premium  64 bit and it’s a physical machine.
. The Max DB Connections for Report Client Sessions is set to 5 for each servers (There are two servers). The no of HR Sessions is set to 10.
I wanted to know if there is a way to find the HRC sessions active now and terminate the one or more or all of that sessions from the server end ?

We have had this "PRX5" problem with Exchange 2013 since the RTM version.  We recently applied CU3, and it did not correct the problem.  We have seen this problem on every Exchange 2013 we manage.  They are all installations where all roles
are installed on the same Windows server, and in our case, they are all Windows virtual machines using Windows 2012 Hyper-V.
We have tried all the "this fixed it for me" solutions regarding DNS, network cards, host file entries and so forth.  None of those "solutions" made any difference whatsoever.  The occurrence of the temporary error PRX5 seems totally random.
About 2 out of 20 incoming mail test by Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer fail with this PRX5 error.
Most people don't ever notice the issue because remote mail servers retry the connection later.  However, telephone voice mail systems that forward voice message files to email, or other such applications such as your scanner, often don't retry and
simply fail.  Our phone system actually disables all further attempts to send voice mail to a particular user if the PRX5 error is returned when the email is sent by the phone system.
Is Microsoft totally oblivious to this problem?
PRX5 is a serious issue that needs an Exchange team resolution, or at least an acknowledgement that the problem actually does exist and has negative consequences for proper mail flow.
