Huge battery drain on 1G iPhone

Is anyone else experiencing a huge battery drain on the 1G iPhone? Particularly since upgrading to v2.0?
From a full charge yesterday afternoon to 20% this lunchtime. In addition my 'usage time' (since last full charge), tells me 12 hours 30 mins, whereas 'standby' is at 16 hours 15 mins. The numbers for usage are incorrect obviously - but why is it doing this?
I have restored the software on the phone after it became physically hot two days ago - whilst also giving me the same messages about 'usage' and 'standby' and a battery drain to 10% within one day.
Anyone else experiencing similar?

I'll chime in...
I did notice that after upgrading to the 2.0 software on my first generation 8GB iPhone that the battery life went from lasting 2 days to about 6 to 8 hours. The phone gets quite warm, almost as if I were using the browser, or speaking on the phone for an extended time.
I don't have any apps running, the camera if off, screen brightness turned way down, location services turned off. As this is a first generation phone, there is no 3G, only EDGE.
When I notice how warm the phone is, I'll sometimes hold the home button down for 8 seconds or so, to make sure any runaway process is stopped. If that does not work, I'll turn the phone completely off, wait 30 seconds and restart, sometimes stops rapid battery drain, sometimes not.
Not sure what else to check, my wife also has a first generation phone, 8GB, with the 2.0 software, but she does not seem to have the warm phone, rapid battery drain issue.
Any further suggestions? Or are we all waiting for a 2.1 bugfix?

  • Webcal subscription = huge battery drain

This thread follows on from a previous (archived) discussion from a while back:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2569061?start=0&tstart=0
Because of the battery problems I experienced in that post, I have 2 webcal subscriptions set up in the following manner:
    - Subscribe to the webcal calendars on my Macbook's iCal
    - Set the Location of the calendar in iCal to my MobileMe account (rather than "On My Mac") so that the calendars are pushed to MobileMe
    - Setup my MobileMe account on my iphone (in order to get iphone access to the webcals)
This obviously only pushes updates to the iphone if iCal is open on my Macbook to (a) sync to the webcals and (b) push any updates out to MobileMe... i.e. the iPhone itself will miss any updates that come through to the webcal calendars when my Macbook isn't on to sync to them.
So I tried subscribing directly to those webcals on my iPhone again (fetch setting was set to Manual for both webcals) – overnight my phone went from 100% to 18%... that is a RIDICULOUS amount of battery usage...
Is anyone else getting crazily huge battery usage when they subscribe directly to webcals like this?  Because at the moment I'm stuck with two less than ideal scenarios:
    1) Subscribe to the webcals through iCal, and deal with missing out on any changes that get made while my iCal machine is off; or
    2) Subscribe to the webcals directly on the iphone and get crazily ridiculous battery usage...
Anyone have anything that might help here?

  • My own Battery Drain Issues on iPhone 5

Hello guys, I've just created an account here to share my many issues with iPhone 5.
Well, this wasn't my Apple's 1st product, as I've had Ipod touch 2g and 3g, as well as an iPhone 3g. But it's my first time experiencing crazy battery issues with an Apple product, wich is really sad and disappoint, since this is the MOST expensive cell phone in my country (Brazil).
It all started about a week after I bought my iPhone 5. One morning I was on the bus, going to work, and my iPhone had about 99% battery remaining. 1h20 later, when I arrived at work, I had about 80% battery, so I panicked.
Suddenly I realized I was a victim of the common i5 battery drain. I was loosing 1% battery each 3~5 minutes IN STAND BY. And my settings are the same as they've ever been: wi-fi off, 3G off, 4G off (since it's not available in Brazil), brightness on minimum, no weak cell phone coverage etc. So, I shouldn't be experiencing this at all.
After reading lots of threads around the web, I realized that the ONLY solution to this would RESET AND START YOUR IPHONE AS A NEW ONE. No backups, no deleting apps and data. Sometimes removing email accounts would work, but as I didn't use this stuff, restarting my phone seemed to be the solution.
So I did it and, apparently, my problems were solved. My phone has worked perfectly for 2+ months. And then I let it fully discharge - but it's was not the first time it' happened. After I recharged for 4h, I started loosing battery really fast again, so the battery drain have came back. It was so frustrating.
Then I sent my iphone to an authorized reseller and they manage to give me a new replacement phone. They've checked my old i5 and detected a battery issue. My charger and cable were also tested but they were ok.
Well, after the very first charge on my new phone - and I've set it up as a new phone - the battery drain started again. I couldn't believe it.
So now I'm waiting for my 3rd iphone 5 in 3 months...
PS: My original iPhone 5 was bought in the USA, and the replacement one came from Brazil. Both were running iOS 6.1.4 when the issues started.
After all that, here are my conclusions:
    1) In normal conditions, with wi-fi, 3G and LTE off, you should expect your iPhone 5 to waste 1% of battery every 1h30~2h15 on STANDBY. This is based on my best iphone performance and on Apple's information: iPhone 5 should have 225h of battery time (in standby) at it's best. Since 100% = 225h, every 2h15min you should expect to "waste" 1% of battery, on standby.
Sometimes, overnight, your phone might have an even better battery life: my friend only lost 1% for about 8h/9h overnight. But this is just not common. Expect to loose about 2%~3% every night with all apps closed and no wifi/3G/LTE.
    2) If you detect a battery drain, GO TO AN APPLE STORE/RESELLER RIGHT THE WAY. Don't even bother trying a reset, as I did, because it might solve the problem for a while, but it CAN come back. Go to the apple store and ask for a diagnostic of your phone and battery. It will save you a lot of time.
    3) There are MANY causes to battery drains. The most common ones seem to be: 1- Push notifications/email related stuff -> Reset email, internet and settings. 2- Facebook app -> reinstall app. 3- Defective battery - go to apple store/genius and ask for a replacement phone.
    4) If an iPhone comes from factory with battery issues, expect AT LEAST ONE other issue. My original phone's touch screen was unresponsive when charging on PC and connect to iTunes and my replacement phone's microphone was not working properly. So expect other defective parts
    5) With my experience, I've realized I might have discovered A NEW CAUSE TO BATTERY DRAIN: A DEFECTIVE NANO-SIM CARD. Why? Well, because it's the only thing that I have used on both my iPhones (original and replacement ones). And it's the only thing thats has never been tested (both my charger and cable were tested on apple's reseller and were ok). And in my replacement phone, after I removed the SIM, I started loosing 1% battery every 1h20, when on stand by and with no wi-fi, 3G or LTE. So, if you have a battery issue CONSIDER THE SIM CARD TO BE THE PROBLEM.
Also, when my replacement phone was near any amplifier/pc speaker, it would make the amp make that "call or text incoming" sound. (to understand this, put your phone near an amplifier/speaker and ask for someone to call you). This makes me believe that the SIM card was, somehow, defective and making my phone receiving data (and I mean only telephone data, like related to calls and sms) when it shouldn't.
That's all my friends. If anyone has ever experienced this crazy issues, please try to help me. I'm getting a new sim card, iOS7 and my 3rd replacement phone and let's see if it works as it should.
Sorry for the MANY mistakes, my English is not good =\.
    Cheers from Brazil!

    Hi Folks,
iPhone & iPad2 battery drain issue SOLVED!!!!!
I had a serious battery drain problem on THREE devices using different iOS .... it was a simple fix and had certain characteristics that you may be able to relate to ......
    Devices;     16GB iPhone 4 with IOS6
                      16GB iPhone 4S with iOS7.06
                      32G iPad2 with iOS7.04
On or about Feb. 28th all three devices started to drain the battery like crazy losing about 20%/hour on the iPhones and 10%/hour on the iPad2 .... After messing around with settings, browsing forums and looking at what was common between the three devices I concluded the problem was with a single Microsoft Outlook/Live/Hotmail email account in the iOS native mail app .... I deleted the email account on all three devices (along with other unrelated Microsoft accounts on each device) and did a hard reboot (hold HOME and top LOCK button simultaniously for about 10 seconds until the apple logo appeared).
I then re-created the common Microsoft Outlook/Live/Hotmail account on all three devices in the iOS native mail app ...... SUCCESS! Now all three devices are behaving normaly with respect to battery drain ......
Hopefully this will be useful to others in this thread ..........

  • My Battery Drain Workaround for iPhone 4S on 5.0.1

    Hey all,
i suffered from the battery drain issue with my 2 iPhone 4S's. I found that when i used cloud backup and WIFI sync, the WIFI would continously stay on in standby mode, which was draining the battery very quickly.
I turned OFF iCloud Backup AND WIFI Sync
and this seems to have resolved my issues. Now wifi turns on when in standby.
Unsure if this is your problem?
Leave your phone in standby for around 5 minutes, press the home button to light up the screen and if you see the wireless icon straight away then you know this is your problem. You should normally see the 3G logo then it should initiate the WIFI and connect.
Has been great for a few hours now, even with Microsoft Exchange (Push Method), background apps and Siri.
Hope this helps you as it did for me. I've sent feedback to Apple and hopefully this issue will be fixed soon.
    Other workarounds that may work:
Turn off Time Zone in Settings
    Disable location services for reminders
Let your battery drain fully and power itself off and fully charge (Full battery cycle)

You may have discovered the problem. Since I bought the 4S never enabled those features. Never had the battery problem. After a day with full charge and about 20 calls, I still have 90% !

  • Battery drains sooner on iPhone 5

From past one week I am facing problem with my iPhone 5 battery.I try reset my phone 4 times and deleted all apps also but nothing helped...finally I reboot my phone with washing away everything on my phone(3 times). But my problem is same where it's started.,I use to hear more songs more hours of video calls on before but after this updates I don't use both..but still battery drains sooner...my battery comes directly from say 40% to 1 % in just if I facetime for a 4 min...guys please help me out...I am now loaded with less apps which I can't avoid and don't listen music but have to carry the charger wherever I go !!! It's terrible

When you say you rebooted did you do this:
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).

  • Battery drain on my iPhone 5 after installing iOS 7.

Ok first off I would like to point out I was getting 5-6 hours of usage on LTE with iOS 6 and 8-9 hours of usage on wifi. With that being said, I updated to the new iOS 7 and ever since I've noticed a significant drop in usage on LTE and wifi with iOS 7. Now I'm getting 3-4 hours usage on LTE and 5-6 hours on wifi. I've turned off the refresh background apps switch and I turned all but one app off pertaining to location services. So, I have run out of options to improve battery life. Is there a bug in iOS 7? Please help

Updated to iOS7 and have been watching my battery usage. For instance yesterday I noticed, after unplugging my phone from overnight charge, that after 14+ hrs of normal use I still had 55% of my battery left. I couldn't be happier. I've never had any phone last that long before. I also did the same as you, turned off as much "battery draining" apps as possible. Maybe a "hard" reset might help. Good Luck

  • Is anyone else noticing a huge battery disparity between and iPhone 5 on iOS 6 and an iPhone 5S on iOS 7?

I had the iPhone 5 and on iOS 6 I could get the battery to last from around 6 AM to getting around 10% by 9 PM through moderate usage (light web browsing, couple videos, music, games, etc). Then I upgraded to the 5S and had the same usage pattern, using it from 6 AM onwards. I am shocked to report the battery on my new 5S would be absolutely dead by around 5 pm. I turned off parallax effect and background app refresh and nothing seems to fix it. Does anyone else have this problem?

Also recalibrate your battery - let it fully drain to where your phone shuts off and then fully charge it without using it.

  • IPhone 3GS battery drains FASTER than iPhone 3G - Charges SLOWER!

I'm confirming the BATTERY life issue that others are experiencing in the IPhone 3GS I received and have been using since this past Friday.
Step 1 Solution: Condition battery by draining and charging 3X.
Step 2 Solution: go to Apple retail store and ask to swap the handset due to battery life issue.

Your step 1 solution is a great starting point. Keep in mind MOST if not all Lithium Ion batteries require several COMPLETE charge/discharge cycles before they attain their highest capacity.
My 3G iPhone got its BEST battery life about 3 weeks after I got it. Only recently (11months later) has the battery started to get weaker. Even still, my 3GS battery after 2 days still lasts longer than my 3G does...
Keep it working. Give it a week and then see how it goes.

  • Is anyone else experiencing a rapid battery drain on the iPhone 5?

I've owned a 3G, a 4 and now a 5 and have never experienced such short battry life. I've let the battery run all the way down to 0 and charged it to 100% with no affect. I've adjusted the location settings and watched my open apps- but the result is a battery that loses about 20% per hour with only one app running (not in airplane mode). Any advice or feedback is welcomed. Thank you.

I've got the same poor battery life problem.  I only get about 12hrs without having to charge it.  And I use it the same as my iPhone 4.  I read that a reboot after restoring from my iphone 4 backup might help.  Time will tell, but i hope there's a software fix and not poor battery quality or something.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite huge battery drain

Macbook pro mid 2014 running mavericks.  Had 8-9 hours of usage on a charge, which was fantastic.  Upgraded to Yosemite, now I max out at 5 hours.  Very disappointed.

Hi. Im having the same problem. I have a Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and it was averaging about 4-5 hours and now after Yosemite it only get 2. I hope this is a bug because I keep having to recharge after every class and I have back to back classes sometimes and my computer turns off! Help!

  • IPhone 4S battery drain! after update is even worse, iPhone 4S battery drain! after update is even worse

iPhone 4S battery drain! after update is even worse, iPhone 4S battery drain! after update is even worse

Settings -> General -> Backroung App refresh
Either selectively disable the ones you do not need, or just disable the feature altogether.  Esepcially for apps that would be using location services, this has the potential to be a huge battery drain.
Also, in Privacy under Locations services, system services, disable at least the "popular near me" and "location based iAds" - both of these use location services a lot as they try to track your movements in real time.  You can disable everything in system services if you wish (won't harm anything).

  • Heavy battery drain in iOS7 with iPhone 5

    Hello everyone,
As soon as Apple announced its newer upgrade, iOS 7, i've installed that but i noticed a heavy battery drain in my iphone 5. For example, yesterday night i charged my phone to 100 % and by today's morning it was at 77% ( without any usage). I can see the battery percent decreasing with my eyes. in iOS6, i used to get 24 hours stand by and 7 hours usage in 3g cellular and wifi but in iOS, i didnt even get 3 hours of usage in 3g cellular or wifi.
I got an error after downloading of 753MB of iOS 7 upgrade, i guess it is something like "error in downloading or something" and i discarded that error message and it was asked me to click on "install" option and it was restarted and installed the new OS to my mobile. Everything seems good except battery drain and weather app, which always shows "Haze" even though my city was experiencing thunderstorms. A half sun covered by clouds or ground in the "Now" position. Not even updating.
I tried restarting and resetting the phone with network settings but of no use.
    Any help??
    Thanks

I wouldn't restore at this point.
I would do this:  re-calibrate the battery.
Let the battery drain until the phone is completely dead. (the iPhone powers-itself off!)
plug it in and allow it to charge to 100% [do NOT use it, do NOT unplug it]
This will re-calibrate the charging circuitry with what is reported. It's often likely that the battery report is a false one.
At 100% charge, use the phone normally and watch the performance of the battery.

  • IPhone 5s IOS 8.1.1 battery drain using mail

Problem: battery drain is unacceptably high with -1% per five minutes
Description: after upgrading from IOS 7 to 8 the battery drain on my iPhone 5s (32GB) has hugely increased. Several tips on the internet have been tried from turning off several services to reinstalling the IOS none with no improvement. After reinstallation the drain was acceptable only to result in again a -1% drain per five minutes after a week.
Expected: using IOS 7 I could easily use the iPhone throughout the whole day with -1% per fifteen minutes. After installing an improved IOS one would expect similar or lower battery drain
Tests: as said, severals tips found on the internet have been tested none with any improvement. Deleting all accounts under "Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars" proved to be the only solution for this problem (a non-functional solution I must add since I'm using this iPhone for communication...). Even keeping the iCloud account but disabling all iCloud services did not improve the situation, only a real account deletion worked.
Question: do you know how to get battery drain back to -1% per fifteen minutes whilst maintaining my iCloud and Exchange account using IOS 8.1.1 on an iPhone 5s (32GB)?
    Kind regards,
    Ronald

Since upgrading my iPhone 6 to iOS 8.1, my battery has not been the same. I was able to get 9-10 hours of usage before and am lucky to get 6-7 hours. AppleCare thought that was on the low side and told me to visit my local Apple Store for a thorough diagnostic testing of the battery. My appointment is tomorrow. Will report back.

  • Possible solution to iOS 7.0.3 battery drain issue (iPhone 5).

Not a question as such, but for anyone who's having battery drain issues on iOS 7.0.3 and doesn't want to attempt upgrade to iOS 7.0.4 revision yet...
I was having some problems with battery drain with my iPhone 5 since updating to 7.0.3. The device is only about 5 weeks old so I was quite annoyed that I had issues with it.
This morning after a full charge I did a hard reset. Now the problem seems to have gone. I've had the phone on for several hours (about 4.5hrs) and it's only just dropped to 99% moments ago. This is a massive improvement (on even the battery life of the device when I got it, and it had 6.1.3 factory installed).
I hope that this helps anyone who doesn't want to risk 7.0.4 until it's had a chance to cool off and for people to identify/resolve any issues (as I am waiting too).

The update isn't the problem. It was a problem with your update process. millions of others have updated without any issue at all.
Also resetting has been discussed many times in the never ending battery draining threads.

  • Random iphone 3g battery drain ... appears to be a background mail check

Phone Info: Model: 16GB/Black, 3g ON, OS 2.0.1, Mail: Push On and Manual Fetch, Location SVCs ON, LCD auto bright, Own this phone for 20 days.
I noticed (twice) that my phone battery drained up overnight after a full charge 5 hours earlier. It happened once with OS 2.0 and other time with OS 2.0.1. I started suspecting background apps (while the phone is in standby - blank screen) probably doing some unnecessary work and draining the battery juice.
I did some investigation during last week to turn on/off various parameters to close on which app is causing trouble. It appears to be Apple mail program! If I turn off all mail accounts, phone "Settings->General->usage meter" goes up by approx. 1min/hour when the phone is in standby. With my 3 mail accounts (2 yahoo and 1 gmail) on, usage meter goes up anywhere from 4-12 mins/hour or lot longer in some cases. This translates to about 100-250 mins of phone usage time/day without really opening up the phone. On 3G phone, 4 hrs of usage is where battery goes from full to 10% charge.
Details: The above problem doesn't happen always! This happens only when mail application spins in the background for a *long time* to fetch or sync mail. When it happens you see a rapid battery drain in standby. This is a most common scenario when you have a network connection (web browsing OK) but somehow the mail sync up (thru' SSL POP) takes forever. This is what I tried to reproduce: Goto mail->open account1->open inbox .. when it is spinning to fetch mail manually.. 30-45sec later give up and try another mail account..repeat above and press home button finally(at this point as a typical user you waited 1-2 mins to get mail on Wifi and gave up.. we are talking about your inbox having zero new in/out mails!. This is just for syncing your phone with the server). You can press standby and turn off the phone screen. Check couple hours later and usage meter goes up by how long the mail was spinning in the background.
I think the right implementation is Apple Mail should turn off background check when the user closes the app! OR at the least detect the phone is in standby and stop spinning after a small timeout.
Mail Push on or off has no effect on the problem. No other settings (3g on/off, GPS...) have any effect.. they don't increase background battery usage!
Appreciate your posts on any workarounds or fixes to this problem.

I'm flying blind here, a little, because I'm not currently using a 3G iPhone. However, I use MobileMe on my iMac, MacBook Pro and a Windows Vista laptop. Keep in mind that MobileMe syncs not only your email, but your calendar, contacts, bookmarks, etc. If possible, turn off MobileMe at night when you don't need to sync. See if that stops the spinning globe. When Apple changed from dotmac to MobileMe--offering "push" email, calendar updates, etc.--battery drain on the iPhone was bound to happen, because it takes battery power to connect to the MobileMe server. That's true of BlackBery's as well as any other mobile device using "push" technology.
Turning your POP and other email accounts off probably doesn't change MobileMe's synching with calendar, contacts, bookmarks, etc. I've noticed when I make a change on my MacBook Pro or iMac that the change does not take place immediately, unlike a BlackBerry connected to an Enterprise server. I'm assuming you're not using ActivSync with an Enterprise server. Neither do I since I use the BlackBerry Internet Service (BES). Emails, using BES, usually hit my BlackBerry before hitting Apple Mail on my Macs, but BEST is only pushing email.
Best answer to problem? Turn off your iPhone at night and save battery power. Not a perfect solution if you want to take phone calls at night. But until AT&T improves its 3G network (more towers, more 3G radios, etc.), that's the easiest way to keep your battery powered.
I explain the battery power situation in my V1 iPhone review. Google "Mobile Telephony Innovations iPhone" and you'll see the review listing.
