Huge CPU temperature, low fan rpm, is it normal?

Hello!
I'm a new mac user, I have a new macbook 2.0Ghz, 4GB Ram and a hdd 160Gb.
I compared the temperatures of my mac with other macs and my values are huge.
In normal CPU usage I get 60ºC, but when I turn on my virtual machine the CPU temp can go to 84ºC and the fan is only at 3265rpm!
For example, now I got CPU usage of 70% and it's at 80ºC and the fan is at 2456rpm, is it normal?
Above there is a list of CPU temp and respectively fan rpm
84ºC - 3265rpm
80ºC - 2427rpm
78ºC - 2004rpm
60ºC - 2000rpm
45ºC - 1998rpm
40ºC - 2001rpm

Hello All, I have a early 2008 Macbook 4.1, with a 2.1 Ghz, 4G ram, and a 7200 RPM HD, and I am also frequently between 60-85 deg C. (140 - 185 deg F.)
My fans runs between 1800 rpm up to 6200 at higher CPU temps.
Sometimes I wonder if running the Macbooks wifi, bluetooth, and an external 24" monitor, increases the interior temp?
I have had on occasion, doing some encoding with a slew of programs running, had the temp up to 96 deg C (205 deg F), and it still was running fine, mind you I was freaking out.
But when I checked on the Intel site for max CPU temp for my model processor T8300, it said that it was 105 deg C as the maximum. 105 deg C converts to which is 221 deg F.
I figure that they must have some kind of CPU shutdown/slowdown mechanism so if it gets too hot.
And if it doesn't, my 3 year AppleCare will have to deal with it.
I am more interested in the Hard Drive temp, since if that cooks, there goes my "restore plan" into action. But it generally stays around 90 - 100 deg F.
My buddy has an iMac, and it runs between 70-100 deg F. Go figure, it's cold as ice
Just thought I would share my 2 cents worth, IAN...

    HI
I have MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III OC
Problem is with very low fan RPM
same is on Adia64 and GPU-Z.0.7.8
    What i can do?

    Hi
For last few weeks graphic card was not working properly even when I was playing games. Today I open computer case and I saw that the one fan is compliteley stopped.
Could you please give me some advise what to do now as I have no idea what happened?
    Thank you very much

  • First Backup on Time Machine - CPU temperature and fan speed

I attached my external WD drive and started Time Machine. Works just fine however I watched the cpu and temp and fan speed as reported by iStat.
During the hour long "first backup" I reached an incredible 160 degrees cpu temp and 6000 rpm fan speed. Cpu was 70 percent or so. When this temp was reached it looked like some limiter took over to reduce cpu consumption and temp. CPU dropped to 30 percent and the temp came down. Fan rpms reduced as temp did.
I don't know if iStat reports the feeds on a MacBook Air properly or not but if so......interesting.

160F is not very high - 160C would be a different matter.
Under sustained 100% load, my Macbook CPU is at about 190F, with the fan at about 6200 rpm, in a room at about 68F.

  • Satellite C855 - Average CPU temperature and fan speed

    Hello!
I've had this toshiba Satellite C855 since march this year. it's only recently that the CPU temp and Fan speeds have been worrying me.
When I'm not playing games or doing a livestream my CPU temp stays around 35-40% with the fanspeed at steady 50% or not on at all due to it been cool.
When I do play games however the fanspeed is going up to around 66-68% with the CPU been around 55-60%
I was wondering if this is normal? or do I need to clean it out by taking it apart. if it is the second option then I am worried since I do not want to damage anything inside. plus I am not that great with the inner workings of a computer.
Any help or information would be very appreciated thanks.

In my opinion there is no reason for panic. T is logic that under stress CPU activity is higher and CPU produces more heat. Notebook must be cooled down properly so sensors that control cooling fans register growing temperature and cooling fans will run on higher speed.
There is no reason for cleaning. And one day if that must be done please dont do it alone. You are not authorized for doing this.

  • My cpu temperature showing 84'c. is it normal, my cpu temperature showing 84'c. is it normal

temperature of mu macbook pro showing is 84'c. is it normal?
I can't keep my laptop on my lap as it is very warm.

Before downloading SMC Fan Control as per the suggestion of ivanhernandezeuropa you should check first why the computer is showing such temperatures.  My first step would be to use Activity Monitor to check if there were a runaway process.  Flash is a possible culprit.  If there is some application using large amounts of CPU capacity, it may be a good idea to quit that (if necessary Force Quit) then see how the temperatures and fans react.
I have the 13" and the 15" MacBook Pro and these both get a bit warm sometimes.  Usually, the cause is a process, like mds which may appear when Spotlight is indexing; and of course Flash (often a problem).
Putting the notebook computer on your lap is not really recommended and recent research suggests that you could suffer more than burned knees.
Check too that the fan vents are not obstructed in any way.

  • CPU load LOW - Fan speed HIGH - WHY ?

    Hi
I'm watching youtube videos on my mac - under Windows XP (bootcamp) - I'm monitoring my CPU usage while watching the videos because my fan is spinning at full speed - yet the CPU is not working hard - about 5 to 10%. Does anyone know why the computer is getting hot and fans spinning faster if CPU load is still very low? Is it possible that I only see one of the cores in the windows monitoring system? I press control alt delete to access the info.
    Any suggestions would be helpfull
    Thanks

    Hi tcdm1972,
A lot of postsfrom fellow users report their fan kicking out loud mostly when watching or using application that related with video or streaming video.
I'm not an apple tech, so I guess that fan also try to cool down the GPU chip sets since it is dinamically adjusted in and out of allocated memory and rendering or streaming video to the screen and become hot as well. (I could be wrong).
And most of the time the fan kicking when macbook plugged with mag safe (processor runs optimal clock speed).
Hope other user have different opinion.
    Good Luck.

  • Hight temperature, low fans speed. A problem_

I have a problem with OS 10.8.3 on macbook pro retina 15.
When temperature increases, above 75°C, I notice no change in fans speed, not increase.
Only with a external program (the smcfan control) is possible to increase speed and decrease the temperature.
    Anyone else have this problem?

The first thing you should do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, you may have a hardware problem, so connect your computer to a power source and run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 To start in Apple Hardware Test, hold Option (Alt) and D keys while the Mac is starting.
Then, select your language, mark the option for extended mode and start the test. If you see an error at the end of that test, copy it here. Make a backup of your computer and take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller to get it replaced or repaired

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.
    Cheers

  • Sun PCi II and Chip Temperature and Fan Speed

    Dear All,
I have just installed a Sun PCi II card and am running it under Solaris 10 all seems to be working fine.
Looking at the environmental stuff in the BIOS revealed that the CPU Temperature is 94*C and the CPU Fan Speed is 0 RPM. Should I be worried ?
Do you think the fan has failed or is it just a bogus report. I would have thought if the chip got that hot the system would shutdown.
    Thanks in advance,
    Hugh

Getting exactly the same CPU temperature and fan speed in a SunPCI II just installed in a Sun Blade 2000. Also noticed that the BIOS PC Health Status Page reports a Shutdown Temperature of 60 *C, i.e. the reported CPU Temperature is above the Shutdown Temperature but the system is still runing...
Not sure if the "micro cooler" device fitted over the CPU has a fan, or uses some other cooling technique.

Not the best gaming machine, but if your fans kick in and keep the temperature stable, you're ok in the short term. Over time, heat will degrade the battery prematurely and lessen the life of other components.
    Keep it well ventilated.

  • Z68A-G43 - Bios shows cpu temperature incorrectly - noisy fan - SOLVED

    Hi
I have i7-2600 + Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro rev.2 and when I use Z68A-G43 (G3),  the cpu temperature shown in the bios is around 20 degrees higher ( 52-53 degrees C ) ,  than while I am using the same components on MSI H67MA-E35 or Asus P8H61M-LE/USB3 (30 -32 degrees in both cases ) !
I use the same thermal paste and the cpu  & heat sink are definitely seated properly.
The on-board  sensors are fine as when Windows is loaded, programs like HWINFO, PCWizard show the right, much lower temperature .
It wouldn't bother me that much since I know that nothing is getting overheated (the heat sink is cold ) ,however, the higher bios indications make the cpu fan spinning much faster ( 2000 rpms + ), I cannot slow it down thus I get a lot of noise coming out from it .
I updated bios to the newest 2.3 ( btw brilliant tool by Svet ) but there was no improvement, I still get the high temps and no option to control the fan.

Just checked again, Smart Fan works at the bios level too, so just the temperature shown is wrong (50-52) instead of ~ 30. I am happy customer now. Thanks again for your help.
This is pretty normal behaviour, my bios temp is ~40°C - 42°C, whilst in Windows the idle temp is ~25°C (depending all on ambient temps).
There are 2 reasons given, which one is correct or if they are both correct, I dont know, but they told me that in BIOS, the cpu utilization is much higher then in idle Windows desktop and/or it is as Jack already described, that powersaving options are not enabled in BIOS, but doing such a good thing in Windows, that the cpu drops its temps significantly.
The reason for the higher BIOS temp then others, can be in the cpu itself, some are just plain hotheads, or have flaky temperature sensors, for instance one core of my cpu will always be at 62°C max, while the other three peak at ~71°C, it just will not go over 62°C.

  • Tweak the balance between fan speed and CPU temperature / Dell M6400?

    Hi all,
I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. It has always been noisy, btw, but I recently noticed that the CPU fan was blowing a lot of air even though the CPU temperature is lower than 70°C. When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?
    Aurel.
PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

I have tried everything you can find on the net. From unplug the cable cord to cleaning fans. Smc reset en pram reset. Eeven more. Its a Intel imac 24 inch 2009. Help

    Hooray, I think I found a solution.
Using terminal commands there actually is a way to force smcFanControl to set a tolerable max rpm for the CPU fan.
    WARNING:
Be aware that this solution should only be used if you know what you're doing and you are absolutely sure the CPU fan on your iMac is indeed out of control.
Forcing a low max speed on a healthy CPU Fan with fully functioning sensors can seriously damage your Mac. You have been warned.
    The solution:
    Install smcFanControl
Go to the terminal and use these commands to regain control of your noisy iMac:
    /Applications/smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/smc -k F2Mx -w 12c0
This will set the CPU Fan to max at 1200 rpm: (Oh yes!)
To revert to standard settings use:
    /Applications/smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/smc -k F2Mx -w 3cf0
This will set CPU Fan to max at the default 3900 rpms
You might have noticed that the last 4 digits are the fan speed (in hexidecimal)
Other fan speeds you can try:
    1100rpm = 1130
    1500rpm = 1770
    3900rpm = 3cf0
Now all I need is a way to make the setting permanent. Anyone know how to run the above terminal command automatically on bootup?

  • MBPr CPU temperature 100c+ at low usage!

I'm new to Mac having been a Windows user for many years and love my new Macbook Pro Retina. I switched because I am now doing a lot of Photoshop work and HD video editing and the Macbook and OS X just seems to do everything I want but better. I was a bit unsure because of the price but managed to get a good deal on an ex-display (that never actually went out on display) 2.6ghz 8gb 512gb model so took the plunge.
I have read a lot about concerns over CPU temperatures with the retina models so deided to install iStat and see what mine was doing. Having read the results other people have been getting I am a little concerned about mine. I have been backing up a lot of files from an old USB drive to a new network drive via the Macbook (using Thunderbolt/Ethernet adapter) and my CPU core temperatures have been spiking to around 100'c while the files are transferring (currently at 103). I have been doing a little web browsing at the same time but CPU usage has barely gone above 10%. The fans kick don't seem to be going much above 4000rpm and the case is just warm, not hot. Considering the low CPU load I am puzzled as to my the temperatures should be so high. Having read comments about iStat being outdated I also installed the latest version of Temperature Monitor but that show the same results. All software including OS is up to date.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Just switched the Macbook on again and only have Safari open. The system is sitting at a steady 75'c with CPU uage at 8% and both fans running at around 2200rpm. This is really strange as the Macbook doesn't seem particularly warm anywhere on the case either.
Is it possible that both temperature monitor apps are giving false readings? Is there any way that these can be 'reset'?

  • CPU temperature increases considerably as well as fan speed after upgrading to 10.7.4

I'm running an 8,1 MacBook Pro and just upgraded to 10.7.4. While idle, my CPU temperature now stands at around 180 degrees Fahrenheit and my fan runs at 4000+ rpm. Is anyone else having these issues? How should I try to fix?

    Start here:
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
How much green? under 1/6 pie?
    How many pageouts?
When you are comfortable with that information switch to this view:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime
What is the biggest CPU User, and how much is it using?
