Huge file size discrepancies when manipulating images

I had some help from some of you last week with some conversions from Word to FrameMaker that made me realize it would be a good idea to start pasting plain text in from my Word documents, and now I have come up with a real puzzler.
See if this makes any sense.
I created a chapter using the paste plain text from Word method. I don't have the exact size, but the chapter turned out a reasonable size, maybe 100K at most. Then I realized all the graphics were in by reference. Now, I have worked places in the past where we never put our graphics in by reference because of the graphics management issues, so I reimported my graphics (all JPGs, 5 of them, and varying anywhere from about 10K to 150K each) directly into the document. My chapter became a whopping 5000K! This is a five-page chapter folks! With a document of about 70 pages to convert, I will easily and quickly run out of disk space before I can check it in.
So, I reimported all my graphics to "by reference." Was I naive to expect my document to return to the original size? Now my chapter is nearly 2500K, about 10 or more times its original size.
I don't remember ever having any size issues with FrameMaker when I used it before (for about 15 years, from FM2.0 to 6.0). Does anyone have any suggestions of how to return this document to a reasonable size without starting over again, pasting plain text in from Word?

I just tested that myself: Created a new document, imported a JPG file by reference (file size almost didn't change, something around 40 kB), then deleted everything, imported a JPG file by copying (file size was now about 1 MB), deleted everything and saved, and the file size was around 40 kB again. Changing the setting "Save FrameImage with Imported Grahics" didn't make a difference.
Therefore FM is able to get rid of the imported graphics file.
Did you really delete the imported graphics file first, before you imported the same graphics file by reference?
You should also delete all graphics (copied and by reference) and then check the file size. If it still has 2.5 MB, convert to MIF and check whether there is anything left. Use the free MIFBrowse utility to search in the MIF file (or any other text editor) and search for "jpg" or the file name.

Huge file size grow when using external editor

Hello,
I want to use an external editor such as Photoshop or Pixelmator. When I set one of the applications to be the external editor everytime I open a file for editing a version is created with a file size of approx. 57 Mb.
Any ideas what is going on here?

Lt, it's also worth seeing if you have the setting for the TIFF so that it best suits you. If you don't require a 16 bit TIFF make sure the it's set to create an 8 bit TIFF instead. The 57 meg size sounds like a 16 bit image. An 8 bit one will be half that
. Before Aperture I used to stay16 bit right up until I passed the image off to whoever it was going to, at which point I'd make them an 8 bit version because that would usually be what they wanted. But now so much of whatever advantage that brought me (exposure and tonal changes, especially in solid areas) is being done in Aperture, even before creating a TIFF, so it can be argued that for many people the advantage of exporting 16 bit to the external editor isn't gaining them that much. If it's going to a consumer printer (that is not 16 bit aware) even more so. 16 bit is better, but if size is an issue and Aperture is doing 90% of the global tweaking, I don't think sending the editor an 8 bit TIFF is a crime : )

Errors when using "Limit file size to" when exporting images

When I try to use the "limit file size to" option in Export, I often get at least one image that doesn't export, and I get a dialogie box like the image attached here:
As I am exporting in batches, it geats really messy and risky too!I have tried various file size options but that doesn't seem to be a factor.
Any ideas on solving this, or is it an unfixed Lr bug?!

Huge file size reduced by unlocking

I ended up with a 2.7GB file that consisted of 8 locked tracks that had been locked and unlocked lots of times. I knew that was about ten times the real size. The only way to get rid of whatever was causing the huge file size was to unlock the tracks and Save As Archive which reduced the size to 400MB.
Why did this happen?
Also, is there a detailed manual available that tells you all the tricks about GB? Things like: exactly what does locking a track do (Help is not very informative); and how do Save, Save As and Save As Archive differ in their treatment of purple, orange and other regions. I have had problems saving everything when I backup to an external drive, so I'd like to find out exactly how these Saves work.

Yes I just did that. I saved a copy of the song and then trashed the freeze files that should not have been there. The song played fine, no problem. THe file went from 1.6G to 176M.
I have found this situation in a few other files also.
These are my saving habits when I'm working on a song. I work for a while using "Save". Then after a while I start to save many major changes as "Save as Archive". I always end a session this way. Usually I'm not concerned about disc space. I use "Save as archive" all the time because I would rather have a file with everything I'm using contained within that file. Last year I accidently trashed 10,000 loops and I have since found that "save as archive" is a helpful backup when I'm acting stupid around the trash.
I may be one of the few folks who uses "Save as archive " so often and somehow it seems that every once in a while a hiccup occurs and the freeze files do not erase when the tracks are unlocked.
Since this discovery I have gone thru many other files and found this to be the case every now and then. Some of the files didnt hint at being over stuffed but had a few errant freeze files. Normally I would never go and check a files contents but that one file at 1.6G grabbed my attention

How can I minimise the file size of a greyscale image ?

Hi,
What methods are there for making as small as possible the file size of a greyscale image. I need to keep the resolution at 200pixels per inch. The image is going to be big, 5835mm wide and 1780mm tall ! Some of them have some fine soft detail so I need to keep an eye on how that degrades. Others are better.
Can the same work for colour images or are there different approaches for those ?

My need is to enlarge up a plan for placement in, then tracing over in a CAD program, retaining the fine detail prior to tracing. I have some at 1/10th the full size item at 200ppi, others still as digital slr raw files. I have found that less than 200ppi the detail starts to go. considering this, if I am now working full size item surely I would need 200ppi also ? I could try simply enlarging it up 'as is' but would imagine when I am zoomed in that the ability to work closer in would be lost as I would be seeing great big pixels. Certainly taking an image currently raw and making it 200ppi and 5800 wide would give me better detail retention.
I had hoped for some suggestions on how to save at lesser colour or grey numbers than 256. Some scanning of large plans can for storage purposes use 17 colours for example. Do I need 256 shades of grey, can I save as 64 shades perhaps ? Certainly LZW is the right direction here, retaining detail but using compression. JPG compression starts to frogspawn the edges below quality 6, so losing detail again. What about png or gif, thats what I had hoped for. Does anyone know how to reduce colour palette numbers to 64 or 32 shades ?

i would like to know how can i check this Server parameters in SAP PI Configuration :
u2022 UME Parameters : To look into the pool size and poolmax wait parameters - UME recommended parameters (like: poolmaxsize=50, poolmaxwait=60000)
u2022 Tuning Parameters: To look/define the Message Size Limit u201Clike: EO_MSG_SIZE_LIMIT = 0000100u201D under tuning category
u2022 ICM Parameters: To consider ICM parameters (ex: icm/conn_timeout = 900000. icm/HTTP/max_request_size_KB = 2097152)
This is required for allowing huge file size to pass through XI.

Hi Michael,
I did the settings you just mentioned in the link.
I got through the First step where the file got processed and 50000 record data got divided into on 50000 idocs.
But when its is posting this in BW system, then the outbound status of the message is " Message has error status on outbound side"
And when i see BW there are no idocs in that system. Is it that the RFC connection between XI and BW had timed out and so it did not got processed at outbound side. Or there is some other setting required ?
Also, when we tried it with 20 K file then the outbound status is also successful.
Please let me know how to resolve this issue .

Is the file size of a selected image shown on Adobe Bridge CC 2014? If so, where?

Is the file size of a selected image among the filter categories? Or anywhere else? I know I can find it in Photoshop, but that is cumbersome.

The file size is shown in the Metadata panel.
You can not filter on file size but you can sort by file size.

Is there a Maximum file size limit when combining pdf files

I am trying to combine files 8 PDF files created with i Explore using Acrobat XI Standard, the process is completed but when opening the file not all 8 individual files have been combined only the first two have been combined, the process shows all eight being read and combined.
I can open and view each of the original 8 individual files and read the content without any issue, the largest of the eight files is 15,559kb and the smallest is 9,435kb
if anyone can assist that would be most appreciated

This should not have happened as there is no maximum file size limit when combining PDFs.
Please let me know if there are some password protected PDFs also?
Also, I would suggest you to choose 'Repair Acrobat Installation' option from the Help menu.

Raws, even if not compressed, Sould be smaller than a 24-bit Tiff, since they have only one bitplane. My T3i shoots 14 bit 18MP raws and has a raw file size of 24.5 MB*. An uncompressed Tiff should have a size of 18 MP x 3 bytes per pixel or 54 MB.
*There must be some lossless compression going on since 18 MP times 1.75 bytes per pixel is 31.5MB for uncompressed raw.

Report file size limitation when printing?

Does anyone know of a file size limitation when printing a .NET run Crystal report? We run a browser app, which opens a new browser when a report is printed. That works fine. When we PRINT, the ActiveX print dialog box appears. If the report is large (> 40 pages or so) it crashes our entire application. It works ok if we export to PDF then print, but I am trying to get to the bottom of why it is crashing.

What version of Cr and .NET?
Does your printer have limited memory?
Is it local printer?
Have you tried installing the latest Drivers for it?
What Browser are you using and have you tried any other?
40 pages not much local memory so it shouldn't be a problem.
Create a new Printer and select File rather than port or LPT as the destination to see if it's a physical printer or network issue.
Try a different printer altogether also.
Also refer to Rule of Engagement posting before submitting your question so you provide as much info first.

Why is image file size increasing when changed to CMYK?

When converting the colour of a Jpeg to CMYK in Photoshop CS5 the file size is increasing.
The original image is 352KB and after saving as CMYK it is 2.1MB
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?
I'm using a lot of images for a print project so need to keep file sizes small with resolution of 300dpi. The image dimensions are really small, only about 30mm high so they shouldn't be this large a file size
I am using a clipping path but this doesn't seem to be effecting file size (I checked by saving it as RGB with a clipping path which stayed small, and by saving one without a clipping path in CMYK which was huge)

Two things may be happening:
1)      you may be making the file pixel dimensions (width and height) larger due to the 300 dpi requirement.
2)      CMYK files, with 4 colors per pixel, are expected to be larger than JPG files, which are 3 colors per pixel and the data is compressed in a way that throws away information.
You will not get CMYK files anywhere near as small as JPG files, as you are finding.   If there are compression options available when you save the file, perhaps those can make the files smaller.
What pixel dimensions is the original JPG and what pixel dimensions are the CYMK files?

HUGE file sizes when editing with Photoshop CS5

Reluctantly I've set Photoshop CS5 up to process photographs for things like barrel distortion that my 18-200 Nikon seems especially prone to.
I open any given photograph with apple-shift-O, make my changes and save. However, the copy that's then put back into Aperture 3 the file size comes out as anything between 30mb and 70mb per photograph - far too big.
I've tried both TIFF 16-bit) and PNG (16-bit) options in Aperture which makes no difference. I've had a look through Photoshop CS5 options but can't see anything which looks correct.

Like jade said, it is not ridiculous. Ideally you would be shooting RAW not (lossy) JPEG to start, but even if you do shoot lossy JPEG you should convert to a lossless format like TIFF or PSD for the entire process of any editing. Large file sizes are a good thing not a bad thing because larger sizes represent more image data. And, hard drive capacity is cheap.
Note that JPEG is a lossy compression algorithm, so when you open a JPEG in Aperture, Photoshop, whatever, the file is decompressed and becomes larger. You can again compress the file (such as back to JPEG) when done editing but be aware that each new compression by a lossy algorithm like JPEG loses image data and may also add undesirable visible artifacts.

Huge file size when export

Ok so i use Premiere CS3 and when I want to export my video (one single audio track and one image as 'video', total of 5 - 6 minutes) i get a file size of 1.26 GB (!). The imported files have a total size of lower than 10MB. What I do is i export -> movie and choose AVI format. I've tried PAL & NTSC but there is only a slight difference in file size. How is it possible that this exported movie is so big?

when you choose avi format you will see something called " settings" ...when you open that up what do you have selected for your settings ??
when you take a still image which is one little image...with a low byte count....and make it a "video" you are duplicating that little image many times...for example, at 30 frames per second, you are making thirty of those little images for every one second of video time.
If you then multiply 30 of those images (per second) by the total amount of time of the video you get a WAY bigger file size than what you put on the timeline....know what I mean ??
by using some "settings" on the avi file you may be able to "compress" the video a bit more than you currently are...but you will never get the same size file because you are making many frames ( still images) per second and all that adds up to a bigger file

Huge file size when importing clips

When importing clips from my Sony Handycam (HDR TG3E) in HD 1920 X 1080 the file sizes get extremely large. A 10 minute clip results in a filesize (.mov) of approx 8 GB. Is this really meant to be? I use iMovie '08 v. 7.1.4.
Would appreciate any help in adjusting the software or hardware preferences resulting in smaller files.

for editing HiDEf, it gets automtically converted into some 'intermediate' codec, which has ~40-60GBs/h.
on export, these files will get 'shrunk' again..

Why do file sizes change when I use "Process Multiple Images" to add watermarks?

I'm using Elements 11. In order to add watermarks to many JPG pics at once, I use the function "Process Multiple Files".
I select a source folder and a destination folder, and adds a three digit serial number to each file. I do NOT tick the checkbox marked "Change picture size". After that I define the watermark I want printed on my pics and hits OK. All the files in the source folder are processed and saved, with a new name in the destination folder. Fair and square.
But. The file size of the new file is heavily reduced, compared to the original. It goes from 10 MB down to 500 KB (in general). Why is that? Is there any way I can prevent it?

Or you can uncheck the convert files box to save them in their original format, or select one of the lossless formats PSD, BMP, TIF. What is most appropriate depends on what you intend to do with the watermarked versions.
