Huge .fstemp files on Windows server

We have a, relatively, new Open Directory server running with our long standing Active Directory at work. The Xserve is running Mac OS X 10.4.8 Server and we have a variety of portable Macs in a "macPortables" hardware group. We've created this because its seems to be the only way to allow users to log in to their portable Macs outside of the corporate network. In the Workgroup Manager, we've checked-on "Synchronize account for offline use" which seems to be what turns on the ability to log in outside of the network.
For 75 of the 76 PowerBooks and MacBook Pros, this is fine. However, one single workstation continues to copy 60GB+ of .fstemp files over and over and over to the Windows server that holds the user's corporate network home (note, the Macs are using local home folders on their workstations). The Macs are all running Mac OS X 10.4.7 (client). This continues to fill the Windows server with his home folder and the Windows Server guys ping me to stop it. The user does NOT have a .Mac account and we do not want to use this synchronization service that's failing. It's actually handy to have all of the Mac users' network home folders mount, as these share points are on corporate servers that are backed up every day. (The Windows users at my office do use network home accounts to store all their files.) But, we don't need the Mac users synchronizing their Mac's home folder to the network.
We've re-imaged his workstation twice, but there must be some check box to uncheck or some preference he's enabling to make this happen. I'd be happy just to shut off the service on this one PowerBook if that were possible.
-Doug

Well, this user just got a new MacBook Pro and the new computer is not pushing out the .fstemp files. Also, the new user who got the passed-down PowerBook G4 is not exhibiting the same issue (it was re-imaged once again). So, I guess this is solved until it comes up again. But we shouldn't have to search the servers for a 60GB+ file every day and delete it. It must be possible to turn that service off. The file does not appear on the client's computer (he only had an 80GB hard drive that had 60GB of files, so it couldn't have had one). It wasn't clear to me why this would have happened to only one person too.

  • Missing Files in Windows Server 2008 server

There are a lot of missing files in a server that we manage.
There are no scheduled changes or activity prior to this incident.
Is there a way to determine how the files were deleted?
Are there any reported issue regarding sudden disappearance of files in Windows Server 2008?
What are the events to look / find at the logs?

    Hi,
You can check the event viewer to see if any related logs existing.
If you enabled Audit Objecr Access with both success and failure events in group policy(Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>Audit Policy>Audit Object Access - Success/Failure), add auditing to the
folders/drives and enable auditing for "Delete" and "Delete Subfolders and Files", then you can check that under security log in event viewer.

  • CHM files and Windows Server 2008

    RH 7, HTML
Support person has a customer trying to view .chm files in Windows Server 2008. They went ahead and tried the "normal" registry fix to view chm files over a network, but that didn't not fix the issue.
My understanding is that chm files can't be viewed in Windows Server at all, but thought I'd verify - is there any way to view chm files in Windows Server 2008?
    Thanks,
    -Jeff

    Jeff,
I don't think that anything has changed in Windows 2008, and .chm files are certainly viewable in this version of Windows. However, it may be that the customer needs to tinker with the security settings in Internet Explorer to make remote .chm files viewable. See this article for details:
    http://weblog.helpware.net/?p=50
To ensure that the correct registry changes are being made, the customer could try making them with the free HHReg utility. It's available from here:

  • Mount vhdx file from Windows Server Backup 2012

We have a 2012 server with a network share that other servers backup to using Windows Server Backup.  To view the files from a windows 2008 r2 backup .vhd file all I have to do is open it in windows explorer and it mounts as a drive and opens.  When
I try to do the same with a 2012 backup (.vhdx) it tells me "you don't have permission to mount the file" but if I open disk management I can see the volume, and if I right click on it and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" and add
a drive letter, then I can browse it.  I get the same issue using mount-vhd in powershell.

    Hi Adm1nMikeW,
Please try to use disk management --> action --> attach VHD (this way will  avoid  the error message).
The root cause is the attribute "nodefaultdriveletter" of the backup vhd was not set to "no".
You can try following setps :
    1. in cmd prompt type diskpart
    2. recognize the problematic volume you want to set via list volume
    3. run command select volume "volume number"
    4. run command attributes volume clear nodefaultdriveletter
then detach it and reattach the disk again .
    Hope this helps

  • Access Denied to report file on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise

    Hi,
I have a deployment problem for which I am out of ideas. I have an ASP.NET web site deployed on a server running Windows Server 2003 R2, sp2.  It makes extensive use of Crystal Reports, including both displaying them and e-mailing them to specified recipients as PDF files. It all works great.
Now I need to port the web site to a different server, running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, sp1. The reports display fine as long as I am not trying to convert it to PDF for e-mailng. When it gets to the following line in my code:
    MemoryStream memStream = (MemoryStream)rptDoc.ExportToStream(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat);
    It reports the following error:
Access denied.Error in File JobDetails {DC64A5D3-9DD7-4E4C-90F5-A08731409B29}.rpt:
Access to report file denied. Another program may be using it.
I finally got it to work by granting Modify permission to Everyone for the c:\Windows\Temp folder. Obviously this is not a good practice.  Granting Full Control  to the IUSR_servername account did not solve the problem on Windows Server Enterprise, although it did the trick on R2.
So the question is, which account needs which permission to the Temp folder to enable the PDF to get written?
    Thanks.
    Dan

What ever account the app is running under will need read / write permissions on the temp folder. Your working server should be a good place to look to see how the premissions were set there. The same will apply to any other server(?).

  • Unable to open leopard files on windows server

    Hi,
We had a mac which was on Leopard and saved files to the server
The file system we use is a Windows 2008 File Server, this has worked fine with leopard for years
However I understand that Leopard splits the files into resource forks - and that Lion has dropped support for these files.
That particular mac is now on Lion as we upgraded and encountering LOTS of issues
I unable to open or edit lots of the files as i believe chunks of the files are missing.
E.g an .eps file showed as 740KB on leopard - Viewing from a windows PC it was 730kb for the .eps and 10kb for the ._ resource fork.
Now that we are on the LION upgrade, we only see the .eps file and it is only 730kb. Information missing is things such as preview (quark), Font data, type of file, version number
Is there anyways to fix this? we have hundreds! of images, files etc created with leopard and now upgraded to lion they all have become useless!
Rejoining the resource forks and files together so that they are usable on lion
    Thanks

You also may want to post this in the Lion forum, someone there may have some insight.

  • Trying to zip / compress a file in Windows Server 2008 & SQL Server 2008 R2 server

    Hi,
We are trying to zip / compress a xml file that has been created by retrieving data from SQL Server 2008 R2 database running on Windows Server 2008.

  • Sender file adapter is not picking the file from windows server

    Hi Experts,
We have a sender file adapter running on Unix server. Now we have changed the source directory path from Unix to Windows in file access parameters.  It is not picking the files from windows directory and not showing any error.
In this scenario, input file for sender adapter is *.xml and no content conversion.
Could any one please let me know is there anything needs to changed in file adapter.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sridhar. M

    Sridhar,
What do you have in the directory path?
If it is a shared drive in unix then the directory in windows should also be a shared drive from XI system. Else if it is FTP check the address.

  • Extremely Slow Response when attempting to display files on Windows Server

I have set up File Sharing on my MacBook Pro using SMB and defined the folders that are available to be shared. When I look at the Network Neighbourhood in Windows Explorer the Macbook appears listed with all the other PCs on the network. When I try to open the Macbook in Explorer it takes a very long time to open (about 2 minutes or so) and shows me the list of folders. When I try to open a folder the exact same thing happens - it opens after a couple of minutes, this continues for every folder that I try to open. I thought it might be that Explorer needed to "catalog" the files in the folders but the same thing happens each time - if I close the connection and try again it takes the same amount of time. What is very strange is that if I connect to the Windows Server from the Mac opening and looking at shared folders/files is instantaneous so clearly this is not a network problem. If I use the Win2K3 server to look at other computers/files the result is the same - instantaneous access, so it has nothing to do with the Win2K3 server - clearly the problem is with the MacBook serving up the file information to the Win2K3 server. I have tried with AFP on and off and the result is the same. The user name/pwd is the same on both the Win2K3 and the Macbook - and I have tried with a different username on the Win2K3 - no difference. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

Yes they are on the same workgroup, on ethernet, plugged into the same switch. The Mac can read and copy files of the Win2K3 server with no problem. The problem is clearly at the Mac end as the Win2K3 server can view files on any machine on the network without the slow response, the Mac can view files on the Win2K3 server without the slow response, it is only when the Win2K3 server tries to view files on the Mac.

  • Reading .txt file on Windows Server 2008

I have a Java 7 application that we distribute, and it reads configurations from a .txt file distributed with it, in the same directory as the .jar file. On Windows 7, windows XP, Windows 8, this works fine, but on our server, running Windows Server 2008, this fails. It is a simple check that fails:
    Path p = Paths.get("config.txt");
    if(Files.isReadable(p))
This will not work on Windows Server 2008 r2. It suspect that it somehow hasn't got read permissions, but I'm not sure.
It also fails if the absolute path is specified.

And what if you use the regular old fashioned standard IO File class and not Files to check if the file is readable (File.canRead())?
Methinks (or to be honest: I guess) there is something odd with the creation of the Path object on your windows server file system, but I wouldn't be able to tell what exactly.

  • Background Job : To download file to windows server

    Hi Gurus,
Here we have to develop a program thats creates a csv file in a network shared folder( a windows folder), We have to schedule it as a background process. We cant use gui_upload function module, since it doesnt support background jobs.
    Please share your ideas.
    Any idea about ftp?
    Thanks in advance,
    Anuroop

    hi,
I think you can have a network shared folder on application server.
you said that it is a comma separated file.
    1) Using TCODE CG3Z, upload the flat file to application server , remember to copy the path (it contains file path aswellas name).
    2) Using DATASET read the filepath along with the name and read each line into workarea and split at ',' into fields.
    3) Then append those fields to internal table.
using the FMs job_open, job_submit and job_close you can go for background scheduling.
Please go through the following link for sample code on FTP.
    http://abap4.tripod.com/FTP_Using_SAP_Functions.html
    Reward points if helpful.
    Thanks and regards
