Huge general problem - stability

Hi all,
I'm experiencing huge stability problem for the past few weeks.
Most of my programs (excel, iPhoto, safari...) are crashing without any reasons ... I keep sending reports to apple,... but I thought that if I post something here, someone might have an idea on what's going on ...
I think it's starting after safari crash (due to java and/or flash)... then, I can't work anymore. I have to reboot my computer and hope for the best.
I have saved few crash report if that can be of any help.

You need to follow up your crashes with repairing your disk drive.
Install OS X to an external drive - so you know it is safe. And then run Disk Utility to repair your drive and permissions. I would not rely solely on DU though to repair drives, I'd invest in Alsoft Disk Warrior.
Before you install or update your system or add software, always boot from another drive and do repairs, and make sure you have a current working system.
You may need to update your backups and do a fresh install. Or try using a new test user account.
At the least use the Reset for Safari to empty and delete the cache files and folders that Safari creates.
~/Library/Caches/MetaData
~/Library/Caches/Safari
~/Library/Safari/ - everything except the bookmarks.plist (might want to move everything to another location temporarily).
Same for java, flash cache folders.
Then look into why and what is causing this. Could be bad memory.

    Hi,
    I had HUGE issues with a BlueAnt Q2 on the 4, and after five exchanges, I had to get rid of the phone becuase the Apple store admited that they had "some bluetooth issues."
    I still have the Q2, and I was wondering the same thing becuase I realy want an iphone.

    Also, when I try to close firefox and restart it, the process doesn'y get killed with the normal Command + Q in Mac.
    I need to use Force Quit instead.

    Try updating Flash. You appear to be running an older version dating from September 2010 which might be the cause of the problem. Download from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    If the problem persists after updating, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • What is the general problem with this OriginLab VI?

    I'd like to use some VIs provided by OriginLab for their graphing and analysis software.  They apparently haven't updated their VIs since Labview version 8.5  The attached screenshot is an example of the general problem I'm seeing in their VIs.  If I hover over the property nodes, the Labview context help gives the error "This property is not valid for this class."  It looks to me like these are Origin classes and Origin properties, so I'm surprised by that error.
    Any idea about the reason for this problem?  I'd like to explain it to them in a little more detail and try to motivate them to fix it.  Still, I doubt it will happen soon.  Any suggestions about whether it's something I could fix myself?
    Thanks!

    The activeX interface might be inside a *.ocx, *.dll and even a *.exe file. So manually browsing and trying files with these endings might work. You could even try a text search with a hex editor to identify possible ActiveX components, you should find the keywords IDispatch and IUnknown in them.
    The proper way would be when they show up in the list. This actually is derived from some registry keys (I think it was a bit cryptic to track in the registry, as it involved searching for CLSID or the like). Proper registration is done by command line regsrv32 (if memory serves right). Normally this is automatically called from the installer.
    So it might be the best you just try to reinstall Origin.
    Also search the Origin folder if there are some other examples included there (and if they work).

  • Firewire 800 general problem?

    Hello, I have a BIG problem in my hands and I'm wondering if there's anyone out there to help me.
    I have 3 LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Drive eSATA 1.5Gbits, FireWire 800, FireWire 400, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 that I use to backup my music. I copy my music in the first one and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the information when I turn on the second and third disks. I only turn on the disks when I'm using them, the rest of the time they're all off.
    Today I came into the office to backup a new CD but got an error message when I turned on the first HD: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and 3 options: Initialize (which takes me to Disk Utility to see the brand of my disk listed but no details about it), Ignore and Eject.
    This happens with all 3 disks whether they're chained or not. Sometimes I get this error message, other times I get no message at all and just can't see the disks. I tried to plug them into 2 different twin 27" iMacs and 1 MBP 13" with different cables and power supplies. These are their characteristics:
    For both iMacs:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
    8GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    For the MBP:
    Mac OS X 10.7.3
    2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    But the same problem occurs: I either get the error message or just don't see the disks at all.
    Then I moved the disks to another iMac with the following characteristics:
    Mac OS X 10.7.3
    3.1GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    And they worked. All 3 disks with the same cables and power supplies I'd been using. So I thought "Maybe it's a Snow Leopard thing" and tried to make the disks work with the MBP (which has Lion) and they worked again! I moved the disks to their original location and once again plugged them to the MBP to finally work with them and the problem showed up again. Same error message for one of the disks, the other 2 simply don't show up.
    I also tried making them work in the following Mac Pro:
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5
    4 GB DDR SDRAM
    And I still couldn't.
    This is all through FW800 which only worked that time I tried it with the third iMac. The only other time I got the HDs to work was plugging them to the Mac Pro but through FW400. I also tried plugging a Little Big Disk through FW800 and USB to the MBP and it didn't work. Then I plugged it into the Mac Pro using USB and there it is, with CCC slowly making the backup.
    My workmate is telling me now that last week she plugged in a different pair of LaCie d2 Quadra to the MacPro and she couldn't make them work through FW800 and had to settle for FW400.
    So my question is: Is there some kind of general problem with FW800 that I don't know about? Or is it a thing with LaCie? Like you see, my problem is not definite, I can't say "It works under these circumstances and it doesn't work under these" because it's a bit intermitent and annoying enough to not let me use the HDs at all. I sadly don't have another brand of HD to see if this occurs. I've run tests all morning in all the computers and I can't figure out the source of the problem. There are no software updates available for any of the computers.
    Is there anyone out there with the same problem? If it's a general problem, are there any posts about it? I can't find one.
    Sorry for the long read! I'm going to take a look at the LaCie support page to see if there's anything there.
    Thanks to anyone who read all this

    Well, external WD drives (or rather the cheap enclosures they use) aren't necessarily or generally a good way to rule out problems, but may be in this case.
    In any case, have you tried two things: a) a different (brand new) FW cable and b) an SMC or PRAM reset:

  • Huge G5 Problems

    Well, here my sad story:
    In 2004 I bought a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz, 1GB RAM (2x 512MB), ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256MB.
    Approx. One year later I decided to upgrade my G5 with additional 2 GB RAM to 3GB. Being aware of the fact that Apple hardware is quite restrictive with what you put in I ordered these "extra high quality value RAM from Corsair that was extra manufactured for exactly and solely for this G5 I was owning and cost a fortune".
    I placed the bricks as specified in pairs after the existing ones. As I started up I realized that the bricks in socket 2 weren't recognized. I tried several PMU-resets, PRAM-retets etc. but slot 2 was not recognized, so I decided to leave that slots free and placed the bricks in slot 3 and 4 respectively. After I started up again, the G5 recognized all my 3GB. Tip top. For some months.
    After half a year or so I stumbled upon the fact that my G5 told me about having 2.5 GB of RAM. Checking the System Profiler Bank 3 (on both sides) were reported to only have 256 MB each. After resetting PRAM the whole 3GB were recognized again. But every now and then these 512 MB bricks were downgraded to 256 MB until it never stated them as 512 MB anymore. From then on I just lived with the fact that I lost 512MB... oh well.
    The real troubles began when I wanted to install 10.5. I got several "Failed to verify the contents of Essentials.pkg" etc errors during install. The errors were quite random until I finally got that cat running on the G5. First I thought this was a software issue with Leopard as many persons here reported same problems with G5's. But when I installed the Adobe CS3 package I got several random failures as well during install. The same with the Developer Tools. Each time downloaded it told about another corrupt package.
    So this was the time I decided to replace all my bricks with fresh ones so I got 8 x 512 MB from the same brand thinking that this might also solve that slot-2-not-recognized problem. But that was obviously too optimistic thinking.
    Slot 2 was still stated as being empty. But the other slots were perfectly recognized and my G5 was running smoothly with 3GB again. Mo more package verification failures and random errors with disk images etc anymore. Perfect. I thought.
    After some hours of happily working with Photoshop, Illustrator (especially since the general performance of these programs and others have been significantly improved under Leopard) I got Photoshop crashed as I switched back to it. I couldn't relaunch it anymore so I tried to restart my machine what resulted in a kernel-panic. After restart several things seemed very odd - I got crashes everywhere and after the third restart I decided to test my memory with memtest from the FreeBSD repository. That tool showed me a whole bunch of errors just at the first test stating that expected memory and given memory (BUFA & BUFB) didn't match. ****, I thought, the RAM damaged already??
    I gave it a second try and reset the PMU unit, booted up in Single User Mode and ran memtest again. This time the test passed. But after approx. one hour of work things were getting very odd again and despite my calm nature I used swear-words in combination with names of christian deities in a not very calm way what made my girlfriend check if I'm alright. I was but my G5 wasn't.
    Now I tried a lot of things. I replaced all modules, checked every module separately and so on. Fact is that after resetting the PMU things work fine for an hour or so but then I usually get nasty kernel panics. A funny thing I noticed was when I was watching a Dr House episode with VLC, I suddenly got strange 'mutations' in the video. white dots appeared randomly and some decompression oddities appeared. The mutation (looked like radiation hitting a surface) got stronger until it also reached the sound track with "ticks" and ended in a kernel-panic.
    Now, what could be wrong with my poor G5?
    - Bad RAM again?
    possible. But why are tests passed after PMU reset and only after hours of work it starts to fail again?
    - Problem with the video card?
    It would some kind of explain the video-playback oddities. But can RAM-test failures be connected with a malfunctioning video-card?
    - Damaged CPU?
    I think this would explain the video-playback oddity as well as RAM check failure. But then again why does a PMU reset fix that for an hour or more? Could it be a overheating problem? What is the max temp a G5 processor can operate under?
    - Problem with the RAM slots
    Obviously with the slot 2 on both sides. But could this result the other slots behave erratically as well - after 1 hour?
    I would really appreciate your inputs on this one. what could I test to nail the problems down to a component? as I can't really bring that piece of heavy-metal to service easily since I don't have a driver license. The commuter service is good here in Zurich, CH but I just can't lift that nearly-a-ton from bus to bus and tram all the way to a Mac-service center . Also I can't afford really much right now so I'm really kind of forced to fix that thing myself.
    I really hope that my beloved G5 has not turned into a $3'500 piece of bulk waste.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas

    Hi comradeTJH,
    I own a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256 MB, which I bought in 2004 too.
    I have the same white dots problem that you have. During playback of some videos, white dots seem to appear and disappear randomly, in a kind of a noise effect. Those white dots also appear when compressing video (for instance, when using iDVD).
    Everything else seems to be working fine for me: no kernel panics, no other symptoms. Leopard installed without problems.
    I think that might be a video card problem. I tried removing the dust over it, but that did not work. I have not tried a PMU reset lately, but last time I did, it did not solve the problem. I have two displays attached to my G5, but using just one does not seem to make any difference.
    My Apple's Hardware Test is not reporting any hardware failures regarding the video card.
    From what I have read in Internet forums regarding this video card (also when used in PCs), the white dots problem could be caused by the card's overheating. This might be an explanation in my case, since I detected the card's fan is not spinning at a very high speed.
    The ideal solution would be to order a new fan or even a new video card. However, it seems difficult find a suitable replacement and change the fan on the card. Buying another card is more feasible, but they are quite expensive and since you would be buying an AGP card, it would be already obsolete.
    I hope that helps. Please, if you find another solution to this problem I would be very grateful if you could post it here.

  • From NTSC to PAL .mov - huge, urgent problem!!

    Ive shot a shortfilm on a Canon XH A1 NTSC, 24 fps, HDV, 16:9.
    It has been edited in FCP and exported as a Quiktime Movie (.mov)
    Then i burned it to a DVD and discovers that it lags annoyingly when played on a DVD player (Im from Denmark so its PAL).
    Now, i thought running it through FCP would have solved the NTSC / PAL problem automatically, but I was wrong.
    How do I make my 23.98 fps Quiktime Movie play on a PAL DVD?? I tried Cinema Tools, but it wont open and conform the .mov file.
    I have to turn it in tomorrow and seriusly need help.
    Thank you so much...

    Hi,
    welcome to FCP discussion area.
    A great standard converter is [Nattress Standard Converter|http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconvers ion.htm].
    However, if you have Compressor you may convert from NTSC to PAL at no cost.

  • HUGE VIDEO PROBLEM!  The colors are all wrong!  Quicktime Gamma Bug!

    I'm on a Mac, and there is a huge problem with video.  When you view or playback videos, the color is all wrong!  It's desaturated and faded.  If you import your videos into premiere or playback through vlc, then everything looks correct. If you play them back or edit them in lightroom, the colors are all wrong.
    Nice try Adobe, but you failed.

    Ok, but we'll need more details.
    Your OS version, how you calibrate your monitor, whether you see the same playing through Quicktime standalone on your Mac, what camera the videos came from, whether they've been edited in other software, etc.
    This is a beta so there will be bugs - that information could help narrow down and fix issues such as these.

  • General problem: WLAN to VLAN forwarding

    Hello together,
    I try to find a general solution to the following problem:
    Cisco WLAN environment, >50 intelligent APs, >300 WLAN User, multiple SSIDs. Behind every SSID is a different VLAN. DHCP enabled on the clients. The users standard of knowledge does not provide the means to configure their WLAN Client. Users are in an active directory.
    The objective:
    The user must be able to connect to their VLAN without knowing the key of the corresponding SSID.
    The momentary solution is an correspondingly hard konfigured WLAN Adapter with RJ45 connector which provides access to the requested SSID / VLAN.
    To clarify: WLAN Adapter A -> Access to SSID A / VLAN A
                   WLAN Adapter B -> Access to SSID B / VLAN B
                   etc.
    Now there are users with i.e. iPads without an RJ45 port, who should also be able to connect to their VLANs.
    How can I do this?
    I thought I could get a running 802.1X network based on a WLC 4402 and controlled APs, but if I enable 802.1X the old hard konfigured WLAN Adapters stop functioning because they do not support that standard. The withdrawal from service of the WLAN Adapters is not an option.
    If anyone has suggestions, I would greatly appreciate.
    Thanks in advance.

    At first: thanks for the responses:
    @b.garczynski
    What you described was my first intention, but if I understand it right Radius is only possible with 802.1X. But that´s unfortunately not supported by the WLAN adapters.
    @stefan.angerer
    My "corpus delicti" is the Siemens Gigaset WLAN Repeater 108
    http://gigaset.com/at/de/product/GIGASETWLANREPEATER108.html?tab=data
    This Adapter does not support 802.1X and just crashes if it is assigned to an WLAN where the .1x standard is running. If it´s disabled, it`s doing its job.
    @all
    Furthermore the VLAN Association must be safe and flexible, so an Authentification via MAC or similar is also not an option.
    Customers can be quite demanding...
    Thanks in advance.

  • Huge Oracle Problem please help!

    Hi All,
    Our PB app that has been working for the past 8 years all of sudden (today) seems to have a huge problem with Oracle: when one record is updated, 23000 other records are being updated with the same data! That's why I am still at work at midnight!
    here is the sql stmt captured at the sqlreview event when the dw_1.update() is being called:
    UPDATE "MASTERNAME" SET "SLCO_PIN" = :1, "UPDATED_BY" = :2, "UPDATED" = :3 WHERE "MNI_ID" = :4
    the problem started at 11:22 am on 06/28/2005, again at 2:13 pm. Then I tested for hours and it did not happen again. But at 10 pm, it happened again.
    I have been checking all the triggers for such an unthinkable problem and I don't see any trigger that does a massive update like this! Remember, it has been working in the past 8 years with the same update statement and I have not made any changes recently.
    We are using PB7.0.3 build 10180, Oracle 9.2 standard edition. We recently downgraded Oracle Enterprise edition to standard edition (on 5/29/2005). Ever since we have been having strange problem but I am not the DBA and I am only a consultant here.
    Anyone has had similar problem? Appreciate any help and thanks a lot.

    Hi Damir,
    Basically, it's possible the NLS_LANG parameter for your
    database install is invalid or isn't a available default
    value. This is a known problem.
    I didn't any specific about one connection route working
    and the other not, as in your case. However, I did find
    some information on this problem when connecting through
    Developer to a DB install.
    The quick fix is to ensure your client initialisation
    files have the 'NLS_LANGUAGE' parameter commented out.
    If the client doesn't have an "NLS_LANGUAGE" parameter
    entry the client and server use the language parameter
    indicated by the server.
    If that doesn't work (or you want to keep this parameter)
    check the NLS_LANG parameter in the DB using your working
    SQL*Plus connection. Try a default value like:
    AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII
    Also, you can try this:
    SELECT * FROM sys.v$nls_valid_values;
    Whatever you set for NLS_LANG should exist in the values
    returned for this query, otherwise you'll get the error.
    Unfortunately, resolving NLS_LANG issues is not always
    this easy. If commenting out or changing the parameters
    above still doesn't fix the problem, it is possible you need to reinstall the DB and choose the default language option. How you do this depends on the installer options
    for DB version you are using.
    One last point - I suggest you post your query to the
    Forms & Reports forums here on OTN too. This forum is
    ideally for Designer, rather than Developer questions.
    Hope all this helps.

    Dominic

  • Huge tree problem

    Hello,
    I want to store huge amount of combinations in memory. For each combination I want to store an integer value.
    A combination looks like: 2,4,3,8. For this combination I build a tree composed of nodes: 2, 4, 3, 8. Then for node 8, I set the int value to be 1. if the same combination is encountered again, the in value will be incremented to 2.
    I can also get the combination: 2,4,3. Then the int value of node "3" will be incremented to 1. The combinations are randomally generated, but they have limited length. For example, I know in advance that I can get combinations:
    3 * 4 * 2 * 20 * 12. Then, I know that the first number in the sequaence will be between 1-3, the second between 1-4 and so on ... Valid combinations are can be either all the sequence or a part of it. For example:
    - 1
    - 1,3
    - 1,3,2,19,10
    all are valid combinations that can be excepted.
    As was mentioned before, for each received combination an integer value of the last node in the sequence is incremented.
    My problem is that I need to store this entire tree in memory, and I expect it to be very big.
    I there some algorithm for dealing with huge trees allowing it to be compressed or arranged in a manner that will reduce size and efficiency of the tree ??

    I wrote you an encoder and a decoder, that will convert an array of answers to questions to an integer and back. This will let you eliminate the overhead of a tree encodeing. (I rather arbitrarily wired the shape to be {2,3,5} so Q1 has two possible answers, namely 0 and 1, Q2 has 3 answers, 0,1,2 etc.)
    They can be used to help in several of the schemes that have already been mentioned.
    I would mention one other, just a varient on the last one, use byte[] rather than short. Then you are only burning a single byte for each unused combination. When a byte hits 255, you add a pair (encodeValue, fullCount) into a list. Which you can grovel over however you choose.
      public static class ED{
        int[] shape = {2,3,5};
        void decode(int[] a, int n){
          int base = 1;
          for(int i=0; i<shape.length; i++){
            if(n < 0) {
              a[i] = -1;
            } else {
              a[i] = n%shape;
    n = n/shape[i] -1;
    int encode(int[] a){
    int result = 0;
    for(int i = shape.length-1; i>-1; i--){
    if(a[i] >= 0){
    result += a[i];
    if(i>0)result = (result+1)*shape[i-1];
    return result;
    void printArray(int[] a){
    System.out.print("[");
    for(int i=0;i<a.length; i++){
    System.out.print(a[i]);
    if(i<a.length-1) System.out.print(", ");
    System.out.print("]");
    void test(int n){
    int[] a = new int[3];
    for(int i=0; i<n; i++){
    System.out.print(i + " - ");
    decode(a,i);
    printArray(a);
    System.out.print(" - " + encode(a));
    System.out.println();

  • Huge OS problem

    I have got this really huge problem with my Z10 since I did my upgrade. Anytime I do a restart most of the things on my hub gets wiped off.Calls,email messages and several other things got wiped. I even did a security wipe hoping it would solved the problem but it didn't. I need help with this, or better still go back to my previous OS. Please reply with ways I can solve this ASAP.Thanks in advance

    George,
    If the computer is off, you can power on while pressing the shift key to enter Safe Mode:

    A few questions...
    - Have you been successfully running 10.2.x or 10.3.x with the exact same memory configuration, or is this the first time for OSX on this 'book?
    - How much memory is installed and in which slot?
    - Have you tried a PRAM reset?

    - Disconnect any and all peripherals while troubleshooting this issue.
