Huge iMovie file won't fit DVD

Hi everyone! I have a wedding movie I have converted from my handy-cam into an iMovie. Duration about 1.5 hours. Size of file 18Gb. Is it possible to compress onto 1 DVD? If not what do you advise?
Many Thanks John Simpson

IMovie and iDVD use a very different storage format (DV vs MPEG2) so it will fit as long as the content length is below 120 minutes (or below 240 minutes with a dual layer DVD burner). Just set iDVD's prefs to "Best Quality".

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

  • Photoshop file won't fit

    Hi,
I'm working on a pal anamorphic project in which I'd like to import a photoshop file, with a gap inside to use video in. I made the file using the photoshop cs3 video preferences. Saved it as a psd 1024x576 not anamorphic. The sequence has the same size and is anamorphic. The dimension 16:9 look good, but the file won't fit in the canvas.
Resizing the file with motiontab cuts the file, but doesn't cover the whole picture.
Any ideas? Do I have to save the file otherwise?

In Photoshop: click File > New.
Click on Preset: Custom (it might display Clipboard instead), and choose:
    "PAL D1/DV Widescreen, 720 x 576 (with guides)".
    Set the background to "Transparent".
If you plan on flying the logo to or from a larger size change resolution to something higher than the standard 72dpi. 150 dpi works well for this sort of thing. Click OK.
Place your graphics inside this template, observing safe area and safe title as needed.
If your logo is not rectangular, use Layers > "Merge Visible" and save as .tiff with alpha to keep its shape.
Import to FCP and set the Distort control to zero as mentioned above.

  • IMovie file won't open

I created an iMovie file on another MAC and now want to edit it on my mac.  I have the iMovie file saved on a flash drive...but it won't open.  When I click on the file, it does say file type:iMovie. And, if I click on the file - it opens up the iMovie program - but no movie starts.  Help!
    Thanks!

What did you drag out of the Movies folder when you copied the iMovie stuff onto the Flash drive? iMovie has a few limits it puts on 'How' you do the copying first is it wants to copy onto a Mac Formatted device.
Make sure your external hard drive is formatted as a Mac OS Extended flash drive. To find out, go to the desktop hold down the Control Key and click on the Hard drive icon. Choose > Get Info
If it isn't already formatted that way you will want to erase the hard drive using Disk Utility which is in the Applications > Utilities folder on your Macintosh's hard drive.
Second limit iMovie prefers to make copies within iMovie itself. You don't want to just grab stuff and drag from within the Finder on your Mac. So go back to iMovie once the hard drive has been reformatted, go to View Menu > Group Events by Disk
This will allow you to see you flash drive in the Events Library and allow you to drag items there. The flash drive will also appear in the list within the Project Library too. If you want to copy a Project to the flash drive, drag it from where it is now in the Project Library to the hard drive icon. A dialog box will appear:
You will want to copy the project and the Events to the hard drive too. Once they are safely copied over you test them to make sure the open properly and you can see the video, skim the clips, etc. No lost clips or missing sound.

  • Why iMovie files won't open in iMovie?

I have iMovie files that won't open when I click on them.  iMovie opens but the files don't.  What is wrong?

iMovie will only see your project files if they are in the Movies/iMovie Projects folder.
Events should be in the Movies/iMovie Events/<event name> folder.
If you need to move the events or projects to an external drive, be sure to do the move from within  iMovie using the instructions in iMovie help.

  • Huge iMovie file size.

I made 3 movies in Quicktime from Keynote presentations, sizes 4, 24 and 48 MB, but when I import them into iMovie, the project file grows up to 7+ GB. Could somebody tell me why this happens, and is there a way to make it smaller or am I doing something wrong. That takes up almost all my free hard drive space, and taht is only 1 of three project I want to create.
    David

    Hi David
Karsten is 100% on this I just want to speculate around how I would do.
    Easiest way:
is to get an external hard disk BUT THIS SHOULD be:
    - a FireWire disk - no USB/USB2 - will not behave if one stores video material on it and tries to work with is here
    - has to be Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (journaled) - DOS/UNIX/Mac OS Exchange will not work
There should be at least 10Gb free space on internal hard disk (thumb-role
is 10% free space). at less than 5Gb the Mac OS gets problems due to that it
really is UNIX with a Mac interface. = lots of temp-files (invisible) and virtual
    memory management.
    Worse way:
Tidy up the internal hard disk so that it has about 10 - 25Gb free space by
storing old documents elsewhere - eg DVD disks, ext hard disks etc.

  • I just downloaded itunes and all my music is there but the files won't fit onto my computer so now i can't play the 12000 songs i have n my library y isn't this possible if all the songs are on the cloud ?this is ridiculous ...

i got a new laptop because my old one won't turn on anymore .i can only sync my account to 5 computers so how do i unsync the account from my old laptop if i can't use my old laptop ?and i have over 12000 songs that i now have to individually drag and drop onto my computer that doesn't hold that much space because none of my songs will play because there is no file on computer to back it up .all of my songs are saved in the cloud y isn't that enough to make my songs play ?so now i have a list of songs that won't play on my itunes that won't let me use my account because it's the 6th computer on my account .it's kindda pointless .

Tigon's already got you covered here. But I'll chime in with some English localisation advice.
There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

  • Huge iMovie file

I've made many iMovies and iDVDs using iMovie6. I'm putting them on a LaCie 1TB external hard drive. The current movie that I'm making by cutting and pasting two movies together is about 2 hrs long and the file size is about 500GB! It hs 95 clips, they all say the same 12 GB size in the info.
All of the other movies have been fine. I'm not sure, but I think deleting from the the iMovie trash may not be sending them to the Finder trash.
My guess is that I need to copy the clips to a new iMovie and see if it becomes a normal size and if so delete the current iMovie.
Any ideas on what the problem and the fix are?

+The thing I don't understand is that I started with two tape import iMovies, each around 25 GB. After copying from one to combine it with the other to make one iMovie and editing clips, it became a 500 GB file.+
I speculate you edited your video after importing, and then dragged individual clips from one project into another. Every time you do that, the entire source clip is copied, even if you have trimmed it down to only a small portion. If you do that with another portion, it doesn't know that you already have a copy of the source clip in the other project, and copies the entire source clip again.
To clean that up, you have to export into a .dv file at full quality, and then export that into a new project. Do this only when you are done editing, as this will render all your effects and transitions, and you cannot modify them anymore afterwards.

  • Huge .mov file. Need a DVD

    Hello,
I have a file that I uncompressed in FCP X becasue it was choppy during playback. The result is a 39 Gb monster that I am having trouble getting into a managable size for a DVD. The end goal is to burn a DVD that will be projected. Any thoughts? Thanks!

My thought would be not to use a DVD (although you  might wanr one for back-up). The size of the input file is not relevant; the length (duration) is important for disk authoring, Make an h.264 Quick Time file and run it from your computer to the projector.

  • IMovie file won't open in quicktime, Everything is updated!

It is a 29 min. .mp4 file that should be compatible with quicktime but only getting error messages. Once it played 4 min of it and that was it. Trying to export the video to an SD Card or Disc. Is there something I need to do when 'sharing' the file from iMovie? iCloud only takes max 15 min video from iMovie too so that doesn't work.
    Thanks!

    Hi
    Try to down-load VLC-player
And see if this playback Your clip.
If so - Open the Inspector here and read
    Video Format : nnnnnnnnnnn
    Frame rates : YY.yy
    What does they say ?

  • Huge size file processing in PI

    Hi Experts,
    1. I have seen blogs which explains processing huge files. for file and sftp
SFTP Adapter - Handling Large File
File/FTP Adapter - Large File Transfer (Chunk Mode)
Here also we have constrain that we can not do any mapping. it has to be EOIO Qos.
would it be possible, to process  1 GB size file and do mapping? which hardware factor will decide that sytem is capable of processing large size with mapping?
is it number of CPUs,Applications server(JAVA and ABAP),no of server nodes, java, heap size?
if my system if able to process 10 MB file with mapping there should be something which is determining the capability.
this kind of huge size file processing will fit into some scenarios.  for example,Proxy to soap scenario with 1GB size message exchange does not make sense. no idea if there is any web service will handle such huge file.
    2. consider pi is able to process 50 MB size message with mapping. in order to increase the performance what are the options we have in PI
i have come across these two point many times during design phase of my project. looking for your suggestion
    Thanks.

    Hi Ram,
You have not mentioned what sort of Integration it is.You just mentioned as FILE.I presume it is FILE To FILE scenario. In this case in PI 711 i am able to process 100MB(more than 1Million records ) file size with mapping(File is in the delta extract in SAP ECC AL11).In the sender file adapter i have chosen recordset per message and processed the messages in bit and pieces. Please note this is not the actual standard chunk mode. The initial run of the sender adapter will load the 100MB file size into the memory and after that messages will be sent to IE based on recordset per message. If it is more than 100MB PI Java starts bouncing because of memory issues.Later we have redesigned the interface from proxy to file asyn and proxy will send the messages to PI in chunks. In a single run it will sent 5000 messages.
For PI 711 i believe we have the memory limtation of the cluster node. Each cluster node can't be more than 5GB again processing depends on the number of Java app servers and i think this is no more the limitation from PI 730 version and we can use 16GB memory as the cluser node.
this kind of huge size file processing will fit into some scenarios.  for example,Proxy to soap scenario with 1GB size message exchange does not make sense. no idea if there is any web service will handle such huge file.
If i understand this i think if it is asyn communication then definitely 1GB data can sent to webservice however messages from Proxy should sent to PI in batches.May be the same idea can work for Sync communication as well however timeouts in receiver channel will be the next issue.Increasing time outs globally is not best practice however if you are on 730 or later version you can increase timeouts specific to your scenario.
To handle 50 MB file size make sure you have the additional java app servers.I don't remember exactly how many app server we have in my case to handle 100 MB file size.
    Thanks

  • Getting iMovie file to fit on DVD

I have a 1 hr 12 minute iMovie file with video clips, audio, some titles and stills that is 14.47 G total. When I use "create a DVD" I get the "duration is too long"message. I have made sure (following Karl Petersen's advice) to have ONLY the video clips I want in the iMovie file. I exported all clips to Full Quality Quicktime, deleted all clips in the iMovie file, re-imported the .dv files to get my final movie file. I also set the iDVD prefs to Best Quality, not Best performance.
From searching this forum, I read that a movie that is 1 hr 55 minutes should fit on a 4.7 G DVD. The capacity status pane in iDVD shows 4.8 G.
My question (which is obvious already, I'm sure) is what is happening? The file is only 1 hr 12 min long, including everything. My original file after converting from analog to digital was 14.96 G, so it went down a little, to 14.47 G. Seems crazy to split this into 2 DVDs.
When a video is converted from analog to digital, what settings should it have in regards to bit rate, etc? I'm new to this (like lots of people I use an old Formac unit to convert the video VHS tape to digital using NTSC, about 30 frames per second, high performance (but not best), and no compression. Not sure if any of this is helpful or not to my situation.
If there is a comprehensive answer already out there, I'd love to know. thanks for the help!

A few hours sleep and things are starting to look up! Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!
I did check the QT show movie info (thanks Hui!) and it shows the file as being 21.88GB. Yikes! The resolution is 720 x 480, 48kHz, 16 bit, NTSC. When I look at the movie in QT it shows it as being over 2 hours long, with the second hours' worth just being white screen. When I look at the exact same, unadulterated file in iMovie it only shows the 1 hr movie. When the playhead reaches the 1 hour 17 min mark, it skips back to the beginning of the movie. Therefore, I was not able to "see" and thus remove anything in iMovie that corresponds to the white screen time I found when playing the file in QT.
Now, I have no idea why there is and extra hour in QT, or why QT info shows the "true" data size of the file and it doesn't show up anywhere else, but my solution (trying it anyway to see if it works) is to convert the movie again (done), check the data size in QT (turns out to be 14 GB, yeah!) and import it back to a new iMovie file (next thing to do). Hope this works!
QUESTIONS: What resolution do people usually use when converting video to DV? Does the resolution of the original VHS recording impact the resolution when it is converted to DV?
Also, Joel, I would like more info on the AVI Divx for storing raw footage files. I am crammed tight for space and need room to maneuver on my hard drives. Could you point me to a web site with info?
Thanks everyone!! I can breathe again!

  • Huge iMovie Project file to big to do anythin with

I imported my first movie clips from 2 super 8 video cassettes. Total run time 130 minutes. This created an iMovie file that is 26.65 GB large. Now I can't burn it to DVD or import it into iDVD. Too big. Why did this import to iMovie so large? Direct to DVD transfer fits on one (or 2) DVDs just fine.
    Thanks
    Harold

    Hi Harold,
    welcome to this forum
one hour of dv (which is the internal video compression codec of iM) = ~12Gb
    BUT
a video-DVD produced with iDVD can fit up to 120 minutes (not GB...)
anything below 120min can easily transferred to iDVD by clicking on iDVD in iM....- don't care for Gigabytes....
you can seperate your project as discribed above (select a apart, export selection only), or cut off that 10minutes...
    besides:
to my knowledge iDVD DOESN'T support double-layers....

  • IMovie file size too large for one DVD

I've created my iMovie file and am ready to burn a DVD using iDVD to view on TV. Although my iMovie is only about 35 minutes, it is 7.73 GB. It is a simple movie. I only have a few titles, cross dissolves between clips and some audio.
How do I reduce my iMovie to fit on one DVD?
I don't have the option to "Export" under the "File" menu. And I've tried several of the "Share" formats which reduce the size, but none of them have given me TV viewing quality.
I am using iMovie HD 5 and the movie is widescreen.
    Thanks!

iDVD encodes (compresses) the video before burning
the DVD, so there's no problem. Your iMovie project
    will fit.
The iDVD capacity is best expressed in time instead
of size. iMovie 4/5 can include up to 2 hours of
video. A little less, counting iDVD features.
    Karl
    Hi Karl
I have an iMovie file that is 3hr and 10min long. I have a dual layer burner and dual layer DVD's to burn onto. Will this file fit onto the 8.5GB disc? or do I have to compress it somehow? If there is some software that will do this could you let me know?
The dual layer DVD's say they will fit 215 min of video on them, so why does it reject my file when starting iDVD?
    Thanks for your help

  • The new updated version of iMovie 10 won't let me open my previous files I created before the update today. I have a wedding that I'm trying to finish and deliver and now I can't because that file version won't open. I keep getting an error message

    Hello,
Please help me figure this out. I'm very unhappy at the moment. I'm fustrated and don't have any idea how to revert to the original version before the update was done on iMovie 10. I NEVER hated APPLE until NOW!! I love APPLE products and apps so please help me stay in that mindset. So I worked on some movie projects when I got my macbook pro 6 months ago. I update reguarly. I saw the update prompt and honestly, I did not think I would have ANY issuess with opening my previous files that I created only a few months ago with this updated version. The new updated version of iMovie 10 won't let me open my previous files I created before the update today. I have a wedding that I'm trying to finish and deliver and now I can't because that file version won't open. I keep getting an error message and the iMovie app closes. Last night I saw the file and tried to open it but no luck. Error message came up again. I reboot and turned off my laptop for the evening and tried again just now but nothing!! I need that video. My job depends on it! I worked so hard on this wedding video and now it's lost and won't open. I work another job and don't have much time. I really don't want to start all over again. Please help me. Thanks so much for your assistance.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?
I am running Yosemitie on a  iMac.
