HUGE increase in TC speed

I have had TC for about a week now and have been pretty unhappy with the speeds. I have been running in N only mode at 5GHZ and have averaged about 5MB transfer speed to the TC hard drive or to a SMB shared drive. I decided to try and change the Multicast rate from 6MB to 12MB and now I see an average transfer speed to and from other devices of about 12MB. The speed test was using Activity Monitor.

Sorry but the "wide channels" option is ONLY available if you are using 5 GHz, 802.11n only network setting in your Time Capsule/AEBS. As soon as you throttle it back to 2.4 GHz for compatibility with older standards b/g then you loose that speed. There is another option. You can set up a "dual-band" network by adding another b/g device (like an AirPort Express) running at 2.4 GHz at the same time as the Time Capsule running at 5 Ghz. This is explained (not very well) in Apples "Designing Airport Networks 10.5". Then you get full 270 Mbit/sec 802.11n for your n compatible computers and your older macs would connect to the b/g network. You would give the networks different SSID names.
Thanks Jeffrey, probably will leave it as is, I only have one n compatible machine out of 3 so probably not worth the extra setup. Even so by making my TC my base station I did my final first backup (the G4 ibook) and wow with making TC my basestation and using the new 7.3.1 firmware this backup (which I am doing as wireless since this machine is elsewhere in house) is booking unlike my first attempt with old setup and 7.3.0 firmware. It is going to finnish in 5-6 hours as opposed to several days when TC was added to my existing computer to computer network and using old firmware. So it is worth making it the basestation so I could use the 7.3.1 firmware (which could not to the old WEP my computer to computer network could only do).

  • Huge increase in monthly payments AND billed for w...

     I moved back to BT for calls a couple of years ago and set up a monthly payment plan to help with the cost as I'm on  a low income. In March I also signed up for BT Broadband. My payments up until then had been £45 a month, BT anytime plan ( I use about £12 a month on non-inclusive calls to mobiles)  I thought this was high  just for calls but was told this was as low as they would allow.  On checking my online account recently I discovered that the monthly payment has now increased to £81!?   I knew that adding the Broadband would increase the payment but almost double it??
    This was apparently due to the way BT now bill. Fair enough but surely it's unfair to pass on such a huge increase in payments for something BT have chosen to do - and with little notice.
     Anyway, long story short - I decided to allow a couple of these £81 payments to come out of my account so as to clear what was a £36 CREDIT and is now a £124 Debit, due to the changes,  and then call and ask if the payments could be reduced.
     Imagine my anger when checking my bank account the other day to discover that BT had tried to debit £82 from my account for the WHOLE BILL AMOUNT! Unfortunately I did not have the money in the account and the direct debit was returned - leaving me with a £30 bank charge for a returned debit that should not have been taken in the first place. I phoned CS an was told  'sorry, our mistake'.
     Where do I stand with regard to having this charge reimbursed to me? I cannot afford to lose £30 due to BT's incompetence.
    Could a mod please look into this for me and let me know how I can reclaim the bank charge? And is there any chance my monthly payments could be reduced?
    Thank you.

    Hi onlythebun
    I'll be happy have a look into this and see whats going on.
    Could you email me at [email protected] with your BT account and telephone number please along with a link back to this thread.
    Cheers

  • Huge increase over past few months on data usage.

    Huge increase in data traffic, even at times when systems are in sleep mode - like at 6am in the morning.  For months by usage levels varied between 10Gig and 12 Gig and I would adjust my plan as needed to prevent single Gigabyte overcharges.  However, in the past 4-6 months I have had to go to 15GB then 20GB, and what we actually do internet wise has not changed any where near that much.  Yesterday I had 600 meg of data transferred at about 6am when all systems were either off or in sleep mode.  The usage tool on verizon is no help in identifying what is driving this other than broad categories.
    Last night I turned off the MiFi device and there was no data recorded until I turned on at 8:30am then it recorded 800 megabytes only based on turning on the PC and not even using it.  And the hard file light was on solid for a long long time.
    I really need a tool that runs on the PC that shows what program or service is doing this much internet traffic.  I have seen disk I/O using Windows Task Manager that shows a number of Chrome services actively working I/O, as well as Google sync, but there is nothing new here that I have done over the past 6 months - my usage is very consistent. And that tool does not show who is driving the MiFi load.
    How can I get a handle on this?  This is getting very expensive and there is no obvious answer why.

    Personally, I use BitMeter OS for my PC. Any bandwidth from your computer (down/up) is logged & you can view certain days to see when it was used.
    https://codebox.org.uk/pages/bitmeteros
    Also, you may be able to view Mobile AND WiFi data usage (separate tabs) on your mobile devices, under Settings > Data Usage. Click the 3 dots for options.
    I had the same issue, but it was due to Verizon Cloud backing up... all 12gb (mostly pictures I don't even care about!).
    You may have that or another app that syncs data. It should tell you under Data Usage, though.
    I disabled Verizon Cloud through the App Manager.
    Hope that helps!

  • Since regrade no increase in Upload Speed? Is this...

    Hi all,
    My BT Infinity has now been upgraded to the 80/20 service for just over a week. The download speed has doubled from 35 Meg to circa 70 Meg. But the upload speed is stuck at circa 7 Meg, which is good but it hasn't increased from the 40/10 service. I would expect the upload to be circa 14 Meg. Is there a reason why? Is there anyway to increase the upload speed even at the expense of download speed?
    Thanks
    Download speedachieved during the test was - 72.43 Mbps
     For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12 Mbps-77.43 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
     IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps
    Upload speed achieved during the test was - 7.68Mbps
     Additional Information:
     Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

    Try the upload speed test at http://mcslhr.visualware.com/myspeed/myspeed_line_capspeed.html.  The bt tester grossly underestimates upload speed, especially if you have significant latency.  It was giving mine as around 6 or 8, when a proper tester (as above) or a good real site was giving 17.
    If you have problems with the capspeed tester above (it sometimes has Java issues), http://speedtest.net/ still suffers a little from underestimating upload, but not nearly as badly as the BT tester.  It gave 12 or 13 at the same time I was getting the above results.
    Now my line and latency are improved the differences are there but smaller: capspeed 17.0, speedtest 15.7, BT wholesale 13.7, BT retail 9.17.

  • Will a new router increase my broadband speed in this configuration

    How much (if at all) can I increase my broadband speed by getting a faster router. Here's my config:
    DSL line --> DSL modem --> Lynksys BEFSR41 Router --> Ethernet cat-5 wiring in house --> TimeCapsule WiFi
    The computers using this network are an Intel iMac (10.6), a PowerPC iMac (10.4), and two Intel MacBooks (10.6).
    The modem/router are located in an in-wall distribution box in a utility room. I want to keep the hardwired ethernet available in case the WiFi quits temporarily. The TimeCapsule is in a good location (top shelf bookcase on first floor) for coverage of my 2-story house. In principle could eliminate the Lynksys modem, and use the TC as the primary router, but it would be difficult to physical locate the TC where it could both distribute to the house ethernet and have good radio reception.
    Testing via the hardwire ethernet (using Speakeasy and speedtest.net) shows download and upload speed 1.27Mbps and 0.32Mb/s. My ISP is pacbell.net. I get the same result via my W-Fi. Speedtest.net tells me my result is about 40% of the average for pacbell.net to my zip code 94301.
    I've heard there are much faster routers than the BEFSR41, but I don't know if my internet speed is limited by my current router or by pacbell's DSL service.
    Any insights would be appreciated.

    Will a new router increase my broadband speed
    No...your speed is only going to be as fast as your weekest link, which in your case is the DSL modem and the connection speed package you subsribe to.

  • Increase Mousewheel Scroll Speed of my jScrollPane?

    Hi,
    Im having some trouble increasing the mousewheel speed in my application... im using Ubuntu as operating system. Currently im doing the following:
    jScrollPane.getVerticalScrollBar().setUnitIncrement(90000);I tried with 16, 30, 100, 300, and 90000 and the speed is not increasing. I also read on Ubuntu forums that mousewheel scroll speed seems to be a problem but in all other applications on my computer the speed is ok...
    anyone knows how to solve this?
    thanks

    You need to override getScrollableUnitIncrement to return a larger value. SSCCE: the table on the right will scroll 5 times more than the table on the right.import java.awt.Rectangle;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JScrollPane;
    import javax.swing.JSplitPane;
    import javax.swing.JTable;
    import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
    public class TwoScrollSpeeds {
       public static void main(String[] args) {
          SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
             @Override
             public void run() {
                new TwoScrollSpeeds().makeUI();
       public void makeUI() {
          JTable tableLeft = new JTable(100, 5);
          JScrollPane scrollLeft = new JScrollPane(tableLeft);
          JTable tableRight = new JTable(100, 5) {
             @Override
             public int getScrollableUnitIncrement(Rectangle visibleRect,
                   int orientation, int direction) {
                return super.getScrollableUnitIncrement(visibleRect, orientation,
                      direction) * 5;
          JScrollPane scrollRight = new JScrollPane(tableRight);
          JSplitPane splitPane = new JSplitPane(JSplitPane.HORIZONTAL_SPLIT,
                scrollLeft, scrollRight);
          JFrame frame = new JFrame();
          frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
          frame.setSize(700, 500);
          frame.add(splitPane);
          frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
          frame.setVisible(true);
          splitPane.setDividerLocation(0.5);
    }db

    I have an MS5182  with an AMD K6-2 400. I recently swapped the processor for an AMD K6-2 500. I changed the DIP switch settings to change the multiplier from 4 to 5 but whenever it boots it still claims to be running at 400MHz.
    Everything seems to work OK but I don't understand what it hasn't registered the increase in clock speed.  I am still using ver 1.1 of the Bios - is this providing some limit on CPU speed?
    When I do get this sorted I'll have 320MB of Ram and a 500 MHz clock - well above the minimum for XP - so should I be able to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP OK?

    Hi
    Try clearing the cmos so that the bios can recognize your new processor.
    You should be able to use xp even with the old processor.
    Here is a link to an newer bios that mentions the K6-3 450 but nothing about the K6-2.  You can also download a copy of the manual if it is needed.

  • No increase in estimated speed

    I'm looking at getting infinity but was suprised to find there was no increase in estimated speeds between infinity and infinity 2 is this often the case? The estimated speed is 30mb/s for both.

    I understand about distance to cabinet and line quality. However and maybe this is where I'm going wrong, the same thing affected ADSL speeds (although this was distance to exchange). I expected that if the connection "lost" 25% of the speed because of distance and line quality then it would still only lose 25% of speed if you increased the maximum. Again just like ADSL you lost a certain % the long your line was.

  • Huge increase in saturation onupgrade to LR3

    I have searched the forums and other sites to see if anyone else has this prob lem on upgrading from LR2 to LR3, but I cannot find anything similar.
    I have upgraded to LR3 but in doing so ALL of my Library (Photos) have seen a huge increase in Saturation - mainly Red which is bordering on Pink.
    This is on a Lenovo W700 with built in calibration. Anything I have tried to do hasnt worked. There seems to have been an issue with Logitech Setpoint but I updated that and eventually uninstalled it. I also downloaded LR3.2
    When upgrading to LR3 on my PC nothing similar happened. I also tried to report this as a BUG but to no avail. Has anyone had similar problems and has anyone any idea how to remove this significant saturation issue
    thanks

    just to let you know that after a lot of further research I have temporarily resolved the huge saturation increase. It meant an awful lot of work in moving the HSL sliders to get my images back to normal. I have read a good few other items on the forums about a big magenta hue on a number of peoples images after upgrade to LR3 .. so there is an issue there .. some of the contributors were very critical of the LR3 developers and I have to say that I am pretty upset as well.. I was a very very early user of LR1 and progressed to LR2 without any difficulty. I even used the LR3 Beta for a while with no problems. I hope the LR4 developers do a better job on any future upgrade because it seems to me that there are a significant number of "real" issues with this new LR3 - there are too many questions on the Forum for the case to be otherwise. Thanks for your contribution

  • How to increase internet access speed of OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia

    Is it possible  to increase internet access speed of Mackbook Pro OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia?
    How can i do this?

    Network Utility (in the Utilities folder) can tell you, in the Info pane, what speed you are actually connecting at.
    Just set the interface to the one you are using (which may show up as en2 or something). Link Staus and speed are shown along with error counts.
    If the data rate is very different from what you expected, you may have it manually set to a lower rate.
    YouTube files are enormous -- that may be the best it can do.

  • Stupid question, is there anyway to increase the processor speed?

    i have been using my computer since november 2000, then i decided to get an ipod touch and so i had to install usb 2.0, a new HD, and some additional SDRAM. I know that conventionally there are limits to the amount of SDRAM that will get recognized, and stuff, but is there any way to increase the processor speed aka the MHZ of my computer that would be easier and more cost effective than just buying a new one?

    In addition to Tom's good advice, there's a chap on eBay who modifies CPUs for AGP models who goes by the eBay name of 'ijnuhb'. I've never used any of his mods, but he's been around a while and I've corresponded with him. Seems reliable.

    I don't always have luck with links, but here's a go at it.

  • Any way to increase BIS polling speeds?????

    Is there any way to increase the polling speed of the BIS for Earthlink? I have a mindspring email account (Earthlink) and it doesn't get pushed instantaneously to me. It usually just pulls a group of emails every 15 minutes or so. My other email account pushing to my BB Tour from my GoDaddy accounts come right away. Help anyone??

    No, there is not.
    A 15 (roughly speaking) cycle is routine on POP accounts. You can't change that. If the RIM servers find new mail, it reverts to 2 minute polling for a couple of cycles and should it find new mail yet again, retains that 2 minute polling cycle until which time it doesn't find new mail waiting, and then reverts back to the 15 minute cycle.
