Huge photo file size

Hi, I'm happy with the quality of the photos that I've taken with my IP4, but they are all a whopping 1.0 or more megs, and I can't post those on the sites I frequent on the net, which usually have a 400kb limit. Is there anything I can do to get my photo size down to something more net friendly? Thanks!

Email the photo to yourself. The iPhone will then prompt you wether you wish to resize or not. Resize, wait for the email and then save the resized photo to your camera roll.
OR, you can just download an app from the App store.

Haha yes i forgot that you may not be using Apples Mail. Lets try the export then file>export, then under the heading "format" click JPG. Then click "scale images no larger then:" in the width field type "800" then the height field should change by itself. Thats what i do for emailing, it's usually the best trade between quality & size, that should be small enough to email. Best wishes JAG
P.S. when you first click "scale images no larger then" what's already in the width height fields? thats your actual photo resolution.

Photo File Size and Photoshop processing

On previous discussion, Steve Grisetti noted that problems with burning are sometimes associated with photo file size. The post stated that Photoshop Elements has a batch processing selection that can resize photos all at once. I when to Photoshop, selected process multiple file, selected source, save in same as source, and resize images 1000. When I viewed my photos after, about 50 of my photos were now duplicates of other photos For example, I put all my pictures in timeline order prior to doing my video. If I found a NEW photo after I had already scanned and named the photos, I would place the NEW photo in the picture folder by adjusting accordingly: 1.jpg, 2.jpg 3.1.jpg 3.jpg The 3.1.jpg would be the NEW photo. Photoshop replaced 3.1jpg with the picture in 3jpg. Does anyone know how to restore my photos back to the original "3.1jpg"? The backup is not accessible at this time.

If I understand you correctly you have been using the renaming feature and the parameters you used caused file1 to be renamed to a pre-existing filename (file2). If this is so then you probably have lost the original file2. An undelete utility may help (try Piriform Recuva).
For the future when using batch conversion it is good practice to select a new folder for the outputted files.
It is also good practice to burn all image originals to a CD or DVD immediately after importing from your camera. This way you can always recover originals.

Photo file sizes for emailing

Greetings
I normally take photos at the highest resolution, making for some large file sizes.
I was wondering how or if its possible to email pictures taken from the camera as a smaller file size, without having to convert/crop/manipulate the picture so that we don't fill up anyone's inbox with 50megs of photos. Especially since we have some friends still on dial up.
This is basically for the wife, who just wants to take pics off the camera and send them to friends as easily as possible without sending huge emails to people.

Hi new2mac222: It is quite easy to do actually from within iPhoto. Select the photo(s), then select the eMail Icon. The first dialog box that pops up will allow you to select the size of the files to be sent. There is also a selection box in the bottom right corner of the new eMail dialog box.
Note: These instructions based on iPhoto '08, so yours may be slightly different.

Photo file sizes

I just started making an iWeb site recently, but I've stopped way before it's finished. I really love the software, but I'm worried about the file sizes (photos). The welcome page is really slow to load, and the photo on there is apparently a png. I've checked the boards here, but I don't know how I can speed this up. Without Photoshop, can I resize it? Doesn't iWeb resize for us?

Also, if you look in the Photos section, under Discovery Museum, the second pic on the page of my little boy leaning on the huge tree trunk (for eg.) was 2.0MB in iPhoto, and is 192KB on the site. Over my parents' prehistoric dial-up, it's painful. These photos are jpeg (not png). Does 192K seem big, or is this pretty standard as a scale-down from 2.0MB?
The site is also very slow over broadband, I'm told. What do you think? Is this slow? I'd appreciate any opinions or ideas...

I used "Modern" as a template.
Photosize looks good if I don't use Reflection or other special on the normal pages in iWeb 1.0.1.
But if I look at my Blog entries, it's terrible.
Every Blog entrie has two times the same photo, one image.jpg (with about 80 to 100kb) and one image_1jpg with the original filesize from iphoto.
Why do I have these two files and why does iWeb upload the original file with a "_1" in the name?
I don't want the large file to be uploaded!

Different photo file sizes when copied back from external HD

I backed up some photos to an external HD (80GB, same size as in my iMac at the time), with Mac OS Standard format, under Tiger. The internal HD crashed, taking much unbacked-up data with it to the digital beyond.
Now with my new Leopard iMac (and wisdom acquired by experience), I have noticed a different file size on the different drives after copying the photos back.
Other posts have pointed out differences in memory allocation / block size as the culprits, however, can that make the large difference seen in my case?
Example 1 is a Tiff file of 8.2 MB on the external HD, which shrinks to 6,8 MB when copied to the 500 GB iMac drive (taken from the Get Info window)
Example 2 is a JPEG which shrinks from 1.2 MB to 552 KB when copied over.
Examples 1 & 2 also shrank to 6.8 MB and 576 KB respectively when copied from the 80GB external drive to another, 320GB external FAT32 drive.
So my question is: Am I somehow losing something with the shrinking files? Does memory allocation/block size difference make that big a difference?

I think I ought to mention that I also have a new laptop and have experienced file sharing permission issues with some applications. Might this be part of the problem? (Although everything seems to be properly owned!)

Huge HD file sizes in iMovie when importing AVCHD files from HD Camcorder

Although several answers have been given on different ways to import HD files from a AVCHD camcorder, in this case a Sony one, the issue is what to do with the HUGE files it creates. I recorded 2 hours of HD content in about 30GB on the camcorder. I can burn those native HVCHD files on DVD's, took 6 of them, and play them on a Blue Ray player in HD. To edit, I tested a sample 50MB file that was about 3 minutes in length. It convered to quicktime file in the same 1920x1080 quality resulted in a file that was about 800MB, looked great, but how do I store or play a 20 minute version of it? iMovie is inadequate to do anything other than produce smaller size files for an iPod or lower quality, unless it is going to be a very short HD movie if doing true HD quality. One of the reasons I took the MAC plunge was the better multimedia capabilities. In this case, Apple (iMove and Final Cut) is behind.
I ended up shifting my HD editing back to a PC with $100 Sony Vegas software that can edit the AVCHD files and author in it. I can produce a DVD with about 25 minutes of edited HD in AVCDH file format and play it. I can also store the finished product in a much smaller space using AVCHD files. I have a 1 TB drive on my Mac that would be consumed if I worked in iMovie with converting all these AVCDH files and kept them in HD quality since it looks like it needs to expand them 12-16 times the AVCHD file size.
Yes, I know I could lower the quality to better work with them in iMovie, but that makes no sense to me. I want to record and edit in the HD format. Seems like these AVCHD cameras are becoming a standard since they are so efficient at storing HD content, iMovie needs to figure out how to edit and store them the same way. Very disappointed in how iMovie handles HD, to me it is NOT very good at handling HD, no good way to store or distribute it.
Am I missing soomething here? I have spent hours looking for a different answer, but have not found one yet? Maybe the next version of iMovie will be better. I like using it for SD DVD authoring, but for HD, did not work at all for me.

Interesting you say it is not meant for editing, but there are about a half dozen editor's for windows that will work on these exact files. I know with Sony Vegas that I have the same level of control with frame precision as I do with iMovie so I think there must be more to the story why Apple has not been able to support it like other software manufacturers who support windows. Don't get me wrong, i would love to do the work in iMovie and not have to learn something new. I don't have the storage space to use the HD apple format, that 2 hr of HD in AVCHD would turn into about 500GB then what do I put it on to play it. If the BlueRay standard calls for 25 or 50G disc's and we can get full two hour movies on them today, then they must be using a file format similar to AVCHD to fit on a disc, they cannot be using anything close to what Apple uses for HD files, it is just simple logic and math. So why doesn't Apple finure it out before everyone who starts working in HD comes to the same conclusion that the Apple QT file formats for HD is going to be an issue with space, you can create content, but cannot afford the disc space to store it or play it.

How do I reduce photo file size in Pages?

I am colaborating on a report that contains photos, which I want to exchange with my colleague via email. It's too big as is, but if I choose the Reduce File Size option, Pages over reduces and the photos become blurry and pixelated. If there a way to find a happy medium within Pages, and not be exporting to a pdf? Thanks in advance for any help.

Question asked and answered several times.
Adjust the picture files to fit your needs before inserting them in a Pages document.
My own scheme is :
build a draft document in which I insert the original pictures (tiff or png)
When the document's layout is OK, grab the dimensions of resized pictures.
Use a tool dedicated to pictures edition (they are numerous even if you want a free one).
to crop the pictures.
Re sample the cropped pictures with a rez between 80 dpi and 300 dpi according to your needs.
Then and only then, save as Jpeg to reduce the files sizes.
Remove the pictures embedded in you doc and insert the edited ones.
It may be useful to re-start from scratch and copy paste the text components if you applied masks to crop the pictures during the first step.

I have a question that I've been unable to get answered on any of the other forums.I am using Crystal Reports v10.The vast majority of my 300+ reports are 8,637KB. Many of the reports that also include sub-reports are much larger 17-18MB. Only a few reports are what appear to be "normal" size - 10 or 12KB.I can see no report settings that are different in a 10KB report file and a 17MB report file. No, I'm not saving the data with the report file.Any help is much appreciated.Thanks.

1. Doing a Save As, then a Save As again. Often, for whatever

this finally gets rid of old, unused objects.
2. Create a new project and import the existing project's
slides. This
can have the same effect.
In my experience, the first is better for reducing file sizes
and the
second is better for getting rid of any playback anomalies.
Otherwise, a better approach for what you're doing, again in
my
experience, would be to cut up the audio outside of Captivate
into one
file per slide (using a tool like Audacity), import them all
into the
library, then add each individually. That's our standard
process and
we've yet to experience these huge, bloated CP files (knock,
knock).

Huge captivate file sizes

I have been using Captivate to imbed an audio recording of a
presentation into the slides for said presentation. The audio is in
the form of one large mp3 file. When adding the audio, I select the
option to distribute over many files, and line up all the slides to
the correct part of the audio. If i need to edit the slide times or
audio (this happens frequently because captivate seems to be rather
buggy when splitting up the single audio track into one for each
slide) the resulting Captivate Project file rockets in file size. I
believe this is because it is keeping a copy of all audio used in
Captivate, ie an old and new copy of the whole mp3 stream, before
and after editting.
If this happens a few times the file size grows accordingly,
and for a 50min presentation i'm looking at project files of 1.3GB.
These are clearly pushing my (powerfull dual core, 2GB RAM) desktop
to the limit. I have tried removing all unsed items from the
library but this makes no difference to the size of the projects.
To illustrate the problem to a friend I deleted EVERYTHING
from the library, added 1 new blank slide and deleted all the other
slides. The resulting project looked akin to a brand new blank one.
Upon saving (as a new cp file) the project was infact 1.16GB in
size. Eh?
Is there some way of deleting files from captivate projects
other than the library?

Huge background file sizes in CP5.5

I've noticed recently that all my background file sizes are huge - over 2 MB each. Earlier projects would vary the size of the background files - most around 60-80K, and a few the same as the current ones 2,257.21K.
I wondered if it has to do with adding more master slides, or the slides in the template (my templates include several example slides, which are removed when the project is completed). I've also noticed that the images etc. in the library are still marked after the example slides are removed, apparently because they are part of the template.
Can anyone explain this stuff? It's increasing the size of files and therefore the loading time tremendously, not a good idea.

Just an addition to this...I edited one of the background files in an outside graphics program. The file was only 42KB. I reduced it from 8-bits/Channel to 256 colors, which presumably would decrease the size of the background file. The actual file is only 32 KB, but the file in Captivate is still 2257.21 KB, though it says it is 256 colors. It should at least be a smaller file.
I tried exporting the original file, and it was 1.61 MB.
Captivate is apparently leaving a fixed amount of space for each background file, which is out of proportion to the actual size of the file.
I also tried capturing the same screens in a blank project with no master slides, in case it was somehow attaching them to each graphic. It made no difference. Each background was still 2.257 KB, which still seems larger than the capture should be.
I tried capturing at 790 x 545, and as Lilybiri says, it is 1.7 MB.
I also captured the 990x570 file with Snag-it, and it was 1.67 MB
The problem is that, while the file may be compressed on publishing, the projects are now much larger than they used to be, and are causing problems on loading.
I am trying Rod's suggestion of a blank slide at the beginning...

Photo file size

I'm being told that the total file size for photos on our business website should be 40KB or less per page. I can't seem to get the pictures that small. I usually end up in the 70-80 KB range. I know how to export and select specific pixel sizes but how can you compress/reduce them to a specific KB size?

Another useful 3rd part application for batch resizing is called Resize!. You'll have to export the files to a folder on the desktop and then run Resize! on it. It allows you to set the pixel dimensions and image quality, both of which will reduce the file size.
However, I don't think you can get very many photos on a site and keep the total size to 40 KB. They would have to be very small in pixel dimensions and at a very low quality. The smallest I could get a 640 x 480 image was 20. That was at the lowest quality setting which was very obvious. Are you sure that was 40KB for the site or per photo? Per photo sounds more reasonable.
If you go to VersionTracker.com and do a search for "resize" you'll find a number of other possible candidates for resizing photos.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Photo files size when importing from camera, uploading to facebook

When I import photos from my camera to iPhoto, then upload them to facebook, they are not the original size. This is my first mac and first time to use iPhoto so maybe that's normal. Is there a setting I need to change? How do I know if the files I have imported are being saved on my computer with their original specs? I am hesitant to clear the pics from my camera, fearing I might lose their original quality!

As for facebook, when using my old pc the photos remained the original size after uploading. It wasn't until I used iPhoto that they began to upload in a smaller version.
Are you referring to file size as in KB or MB or image size as in pixel dimension. As Terence pointed out I doubt if Facebook will accept a full image files at the original size. Most are in the MB range and Facebook would run out of storage space in no time.
It might very well be that iPhoto will resize the pixel dimension of the photos to a "standard" size for uploading and Facebook then downsizes the actual file size. That means compressing the file to make a smaller file but not a smaller image.

Photo file sizes and iPhone

My digital camera files has extremely large file sizes - around 10mb. When I sync iphoto with the iphone I'm planning to get, will it resize the files and upload a smaller version to the iPhone? I hope so or my iphone will fill up pretty fast.

Photos transferred from your computer to the iPhone will be "optimized" for viewing on the iPhone but how much smaller in size these photos will be, I'm not sure.
My iPod with video includes a setting to transfer full resolution photos but the iPhone does not include the same option.

Reducing Photo File Size

I have many photos in my library that are in excess of 1.5MB. I would like to reduce the size of some of these photos for emailing. I realize I can choose the file size I want when using Entourage, but if I want to attach several photos, can I reduce each picture's file size without destroying the original?

Hi kayjh,
Do you have Entourage set up as your default Mail program within iPhoto's Preferences? If you do, then command click to select each image within iPhoto,
hit the email icon in the bottom tool bar and choose the size in the next window. Hopefully Entourage should open up with the resized images attached to the email message. I know this works with Mail.app. I am not sure how it works with Entourage.
