Huge problem with AirDisk ! !

Ok so I purchased an airport extreme basestation yesterday. Was prompted to upgraded to latest firmware and I did so. I connected a 500gb mybook to the usb and it comes up no problem, but everytime I drag a file to/from it or if my macbook pro accesses it in anyway, I get a kernel panic and need to restart my whole computer. it happens everytime and it has prompted me to not use the airdisk. The external is fine, I can use it plugged in strait to the macbook pro with no problems, it only happens when connected to the basestation. anybody know whats up with this?

I can suggest a couple of things.
I am using a MyBook as an Airdisk without problems.
Assuming there is nothing on the disk you want to keep....
Try plugging the Mybook into a Mac and reformat it using DiskUtility.
(Create a single GUID partition - and use the MacOS Format)
- If you use the Journalled flavor - you will be allowed to use TimeMachine on the remote disk.
- If you don't it will be a bit faster.
The processor in the AEBS is smaller and dumber than a real computer. It makes sense to make its little life easier.

I will edit, save, and then realize once i've sent it to myself to test the color is WAY off. This only happens in photoshop. I've read some forums and have tried different things, but it seems to be making it worse. PLEASE HELP! Even viewing the saved image on the mac's pic viewer is way off once i've edited in photoshop. I am having to adjust all my colors by emailing myself to test. Its just getting ridiculous.

Check the color space in camera raw, the options are in the link at the bottom of the dialog box. Then when saving make sure you save it to the srgb color space when sending to others. Not all programs understand color space and or will default to srgb. That won't necessarily mean it will be accurate, but it will put it in the ballpark. Using save for web will use the srgb color space.

I have a huge problem with memory usage.

I am having two very huge problems with the amount of memory the game I'm working on is using. The first is that the background image for a part of my game takes up ~45mb of memory, but believe it or not, that's not my worst problem. i'm not worried about that right now.
The really, really big problem does involve that image, though.
Whn I'm done using the image, I can't get the resources it uses to be freed. As a result, the program uses more and more memory every time you go into that area of the game, because the memory used by tha area is just sitting there.
I used Jprofiler to figure out exactly what wasn't getting released, because I do everything I know how to make everything be garbage collected, including setting all the references to the image to null after you leave that area of the game, but nothing worked.
After I leave the area with the huge memory leak and give everything time to garbage collect, the main screen for memory usage shows about 45mb of memory used by 20 or so instances of int[], which is obviously the image.
However, this obscenely huge int array doesn't show up in the heap snapshot, which according to them means there's no reference to it or the image anywhere in the program.
Here's my question: If there's no reference anywhere to this int array, then why isn't it being garbage collected?

Maybe you haven't actually released all references to that data.
Or if you have one 45mb image, maybe you have a bunch of other huge ones and you're just seeing those.
Why do you have a 45mb background image, though? Can't you use a standard technique like tiling it?

HUGES problems with display after waking up from hibernate mode

Hello everybody,
I hope that somebody can help me soon, because in the last 15 days I'm reaaaaallly annoyed with MAC's issues.
In the last 15 days it seemd I had to reboot it a lot of times, because it freezes, it crashes, etc...
Neverthless what happened today it passes all the limits: in the last period, because of these often crashes, I turn the mac off at night, on the other hand when I go to work I simply close the display and let it hibernates.
Today when I came back after work I opened it and it was amazing:
it has a different desktop!! With different icons in the dock, diferent icons in the top-right part, and it was freezed! I had to force it to shut down, restart it...and since then, I had huge problem with display.
It shakes everything while scrolling mails, web pages or icons in the dock. If I scroll between desktops, it takes year lights more than yesterday!!
Nothing happen if I restart as many time as I want.
In my simple opinion it seems a virus issue, but..as far as I know, there is no need to install an AV on a mac, right???
I tried to record some of these probls with the QT, but when you start recording all the desktop, it seems A LITTLE better, smoothing all these shaking effects. NEverthless they are still noticeable.

I am going to add my problem to this as I believe it fits and may add to the conversation.
I have a MacBook Pro, am using Parallels, and have an issue waking it up from sleep.
Circumstances:
I close the lid and walk away from the device in my office. When I return, (over night or an hour later) I open the lid, and if nothing happens swipe the touchpad or press a key, the power light changes from pulsating to steady. then in less than 15 seconds it goes back to pusating. The display never energizes, only remain black.
I usually try opening and closing several times, and occaisionally that will work. Other times, I hold the power key until I hear the drive halt, then turn it on. The grey screen will display, then blue, then just before it gets to the log in, the screen goes black (not energized) and the light pulsates.
I have tried the PRAM reset and Safe Mode starts with no luck.
*Now the really wierd thing.* I decieded to contact Apple support on line and pay for help (yes that is weird in an of itself for me). As I began the process it came to the part for me to enter my serial number. With the lid open, I turned the MacBook on its side to try to read the number and the screen energized and the password unlock prompt was waiting for me to enter the password.
Observations
I had read where the light sensor could be blocked by dirt or the light in the room was too dim, but I clean the screen and there is plenty of light. Dales Post is the first that I have seen Parallels and the Sudden Motion Sensor. That makes some sense to me because of what happened when I turned it on its side. I have verified that it happens regardless of using Parallels. as teh last time I did it I had closed out of all my VMs and I believe exited Parallels.
I am going to try the deleting the power preferences file and will report back.

Huge Problems with WD Mycloud... files disappearing...

I recently installe done of these in a small clients office (they have 4 or 5 users) and wanted a simple storage device. I had used these before andf they loooked good so I bought one. It has been a huge embarrassment and I hope you can help me resolve my users issues. Here is the behavior described to me:I had a file saving problem in FileA. It could have been around 5:41. Detailed: - The original file was saved in the "FolderA" folder in Share1 (saved there on Tuesday). - I hit save and it said it could not be saved. I hit okay, and then save again, and it said "file not saved". - I copy/pasted the data into a new, blank document, and closed the original file. When I tried to reopen the original it told me Excel cannot open this file, it may be corrupted. - I saved the copy/pasted version to my desktop and continued working in that. My client is repeatedly going back to using their desktops becaus eof saving and corrupt file frustratiopns on wd mycloud.Firmware is up to date.Please help.

If one maps the WD My Cloud through WD2Go.com connection to their local computer then there will be problems with saving and opening files on or to the WD My Cloud. The problem actually lies with Microsoft Office in that case. tv streaming problems with AirDisk

Hi all.
I have an AirPort Extreme g network running with my MacBook Core Duo and my tv. There is an extensive video library on two external AirDisks attached to the AirPort Extreme. Streaming works fine for all media and for used to work pretty well for most of the videos. Recently, however, is is more a rule than an exception that video streams stutter and have to rebuffer, and this is really unusable. I don't know what have changed, I have perused the forums for some concrete advice, but not found any that could help me. I have been toying with my ethernet cable to see if wiring the MacBook would help, but it didn't.
Is there a problem with the network as such? Do I need to tweek the configurations in AirPort Utility, and if so, what should I tweek?
Are there any tips out there that might help me?

I don't have anything encouraging to add to the conversation, but I thought my experience trying to do what you are might be helpful.
In short it never really worked. When I tried to use a setup almost exactly like you describe, I finally gave up because even with the video encoded at an average bit rate of 1800 Kbps (slightly higher than the iTunes Store sells) the video was never smooth, it constantly had to re-buffer every few seconds and iTunes locked up a lot. In my opinion, what you want to do simply isn't possible.
I ended up settling for having the external HDD that contains my video directly connected to my MBP via FireWire. Now, it works perfectly. I can stream video from my MBP to my Apple TV with almost no stutters or buffering.

Huge problems with Amazon and Firefox 5 (& IE, Chrome, Opera)

I have Firefox 5 and Windows 7 Home. I have been having increasing problems with amazon pages hanging- not just with Firefox but with IE, Opera & Chrome. Sometimes everything is fine but increasingly amazon is becoming unusable. It has got worse since updating to Firefox 5 from 4. Can anyone help ( in non-technical language!)

Try clearing the Cache in Firefox.
Tools-> Clear Recent History -> [v] Cache
or
Tools->Options->Advanced->Network -> Offline storage -> [Clear Now]
Youtube may have made some changes recently. Clear the Youtube cookie if above does not do it.

Huge problems with wireless, would need some help

Sorry for the bad topic, and sorry for my english.
And now the problem.
I have just bought my first laptop, and got almost everything to play nice in arch, except the wireless.
My card is a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (iwl3945), and i have a Dlink 524 router (abg).
Using WAP, but can change this if its help.
Right now I'am using NetworkManager (0.6.5-3 from rep) and KNetworkManager (from AUR), and it works very very bad.
It can't connect at startup (or atleast it doesn't...), it takes several attempts to get a connection, it drops the connection and dont reconnect when it does, and so on. Its almost unusable and force me to use wired a connection just to be sure to be able to write this.
After what i read in different forums and mailinglists, there seems to be a lot of problems with wireless at the moment?
Anyone got this combination to work fine? Or are there any other way of configuration i should try? Suggestions?

I've had a lot of problems with wireless networking for several weeks recently, ever since I upgraded vanilla kernel26 from v.2.6.22 to v.2.6.23 (see http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40145). I'm using the Windows driver bcmwl5 for the Broadcom 4311 chipset via Ndiswrapper, and I'm using WPA-PSK (TKIP) encryption. I also use a D-Link DI-524 router. What finally cured the problem was to install the new wicd (v.1.3.1) network manager which is now in extra and to set up all networking interfaces in that GUI, abandoning using Arch network profiles and all the detailed setup in /etc/rc.conf.
My /etc/rc.conf now only contains (I'm only showing entries pertinent to networking)
MODULES=(ndiswrapper capability sg acpi-cpufreq cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_performance cpufreq_powersave)
HOSTNAME="RFDellLT"
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng @nfslock @nfsd @netfs @crond !network hal cpufreq portmap wicd sshd cups alsa @openntpd privoxy)
i.e. no more INTERFACES, not even "lo", gateway, ROUTES, NET_Profiles. Everything is set up through wicd. You only need to put the wicd daemon in the DAEMONS array (after hal which also loads dbus), and the network daemon isn't needed anymore. Also you should uninstall any other networkmanager.
To put the wicd icon in the system tray, create a shell script (give it any name) in the .kde/Autostart/ directory in your home directory (if you use KDE, otherwise do the equivalent thing for any other DE/WM) that contains the command /usr/lib/wicd/tray.py.
You may want to try wicd, perhaps it'll fix your problem. It certainly has gotten good press in this forum.

Huge problem with Firefox3

Could you go http://metalreviews.com/ in Firefox3 from unstable?
I asked people on irc but they had no problems with it, I don't know why I have, maybe because Radeon card?
Go to the website and then click on "New Weekly reviews".
Problems:
- everything works terrible slow
- there are visible errors, for instance firefox menu is visible in the website
I had no problems with it on Firefox2 and lots of other websites work OK.

Problem with Airdisk: files not copying

This is a strange one: I copy large movie files (several hundred of MB) over to my Airdisk, the progress bar goes through the whole process - but the files do not show up afterwards. No error msg, they just aren't there. This happens in about 50 percent of the cases. When I repeat the copying, I don't get the warning that the file is already there, and most of the times it works on the second try, sometimes on the third.
It might be a general OS problem, but I'm posting this here because I haven't encountered that phenomenon in my 20-year Mac experience, so I have the suspicion that it has to do with the Airdisk.

Anyone?

Airport Extreme 7.1 Firmware Upgrade - problems with Airdisk

I recently upgraded the Airport Extreme firmware from 7.0 to 7.1 but have experienced several problems.
After the initial upgrade, I encountered a double NAT warning, which was fixed by switching into Bridge mode, followed by an invalid IP address warning. I rebooted the AE and the warning disappeared.
Connecting to the wireless network is ok, except that it can never remember my connection (which is a closed WPA2 Personal network) and I have to manually re-connect every time I switch on the nac - with my previous Airport Express this would remember the network and re-connected automatically.
Worst of all however is that I can no longer see my AirDisk - a LaCie 500 GB USB HD connected to the AE.
The disk name is simply upper case ASCII and so I cannot understand why this is occurring. It worked perfectly using version 7.0. Has anyone else had these problems or aware of a workaround?

Huge problems with both Linksys site and HND

Hello,
As business user of CISCO products and for @home using Linksys by cisco WRT610N with the Mediahub ive always been a huge fan of your products and still support it every day, however, i have been talking 3 times over chat support now about the 2 problems i have and it seems no one understands what is going on.
1) I updated the firmware on my WRT610N to the latest from january 2009, succesfull
2) I installed LELA and run the Home Network Defender setup, product installed, got a serialkey
3) I click on a device change its security settings and then : PRODUCT NOT ACTIVATED.
Trying to log in over and over doesnt solve anything and reinstalling i tried already 3x aswell, i had to use a different emailadress now everytime, very annoying.
Apart from that, i couldnt use my original login on your site anymore i am getting the request a new password emails with a new pass and link but when i then try to login, it keeps saying that the information is not correct, over and over, repeated the process already 10x, no difference.
Therefor im now using a brand new registed username so i can at least post about my problems and hope Linksys (CISCO) will fix these issues so we can all make sure things work perfectly as with Cisco business products.
I hope to hear from anyone asap as i wanna get my problems solved soon,

Problems with AirDisk permissions/connectivity.

I started out assuming that the problem was related to the Airport Extreme drivers, but it could be a number of things (airport extreme driver, Time Machine conflict, Network settings).
I had purchased a new hard drive and disconnected my airdisk to transfer files between the two. Around the same time that I moved it back to the Airport Extreme, I also made some changes in my network configuration. I have Comcast and my connection to the NFL GameRewind service would downgrade video into a 8-bit-looking, blockish mess. Speedtest.net returned "normal" speeds, but I hypothesized that it was a choppy internet connection and since GameRewind pushes video as a series of flashlets it was causing it to think there was no internet if it requested something during an outage. Upon putting the hard drive back on the Airport Extreme, I was surprised to see that the drive was still recognized as my Time Machine drive (I have not tried a TM backup over the network, maybe I'll do that next).
After making those changes, my Twitter apps on my iphone would no longer connect to the Twitter server. This, despite the fact that speedtest.net still returned a very good internet connection, and Safari worked normally. So I made some more changes to my network settings again, and all seemed well with the world. However, when I tried to add some media to my "Automatically Add to iTunes" it would not let me (user does not have permission). It gets a little fuzzy here, because it would "disconnect" from the drive, while continuing to let me browse it.
Then, my iTunes podcasts stopped downloading (error -50). I found that it would work, if I disconnected from the airdisk, reopened iTunes, and reconnected to the airdisk. One of my network settings is to refresh the DHCP every 12 hours, which was the same with the original configuration. However, when I was working with the Twitter server problem, I switched it from sharing an IP address to distributing a range of IP addresses. It seems as if the airdisk does not recognize my MBP after it changes its DHCP?
How can I make my airdisk and computer stay connected? How can I make my airdisk autoconnect when returning from sleep?

The Finder will let me explore my disk, but if I try to transfer a file to it it says:
The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
Ejecting the airdisk "can't be completed because iTunes is using it" but if I try to update my podcasts, they immediately stop with the status "zero KB of xy.z MB - stopped (err = -50)".
If I quit iTunes, it will allow me to eject it. Then reconnect, and it works properly again both with file transfers and podcasts. Sleeping, momentarily, does not affect the connectivity, which points back to the DHCP issue. Maybe I can assign my computer a set IP?
Hmm... that didn't seem to work, still "disconnected" after sleeping overnight.

Huge Problem with iCloud...

Hopefully someone can help me out here.
I have an iPhone and an iPad. Ever since setting up iCloud I've had a ton of problems and I don't know if what I want is possible.
How can I set a criteria for when my contacts sync?
My phone synced to my company's Gmail account and pulled a ton of contacts with ONLY email addresses. I don't want my contacts list to be populated with accounts that only have emails. However, I do still want contacts synced that have a phone number....
I still have the iCloud on both the iPhone and iPad. Should I remove it if it's just going to continue causing these problems?

I have nearly the same problem. I had an IPhone 4. Resotred an older backup. This backup had an old apple ID that I thought I knew the password. I tried the e-mail recovery but no recovery link wsa sent. (I still have accesss to the old apple ID e-mail)     I simply need to reset the phone to factory. But with out the icloud password I can't reset. I tried recovery mode but since the phone is updated to 7.1 it won't enter recovery mode.
I belive I can't recover the old apple id from e-mail is because my new apple id was an e-mail change from the old one rather than two seperate accounts.   The orgianal applie ID therefore no longer exisits.
How can I factory reset my ios 7.1 phone to factory with out the icloud password.   Thanks for the help.

Suddenly I am having a HUGE problem with slow response.

Thunderbird has worked like a charm for over a year. Now, all of a sudden, it keeps hanging up when I try to write or send an email. I haven't changed my anti-virus software which is MS Defender. I can't think of anything else I could have done to cause the problem. For a while, I couldn't open MS Word attachments. That seems to be solved now for some unknown reason. I really like this email program when it works, but I need more dependability. Is anyone else having this problem?
