[HUH?] error.

i am working on illustrator CS3 on windows xp pro.
we have started receiving an error occasionally- usually on artwork using brushes, that says:
"the operation cannot complete because of an unknown error [HUH?]"
this error pops up during saving, after selecting to save as CS2.
it will pop up on a file during a re-save.
when this error pops up we are forced to click "ok." it goes on to save, but suddenly between 50 and 100 fills appear in the color swatch box.
once this file is closed it is sometimes impossible to re open, or opens slowly. sometimes later it cannot be printed.
if components are pulled out individually to be saved in other files, they carry the swatches, even if they have been deleted.
the only way we have found to work with this is to re-create the art. usually this is art that we do not for any reason want to re-create.
we first received this error after opening some art one of the graphic designers did on a MAC. we have not previously had problems with files created on a MAC.
since this time we have had problems with art we have personally created.
has anyone else had this error? and or know how to fix/ get around it?
thanks.

I am having the exact same problem on a Mac platform. I 've encountered this problem in CS2 in the past as well and it hasn't been resolved by bringing affected files or elements of an affected file into CS3. It is a very frustrating issue and is exactly as described in the original post by Erin Chilvers. I will add that you need an extreme amount of patience when cutting and pasting elements to and from the clip board in these affected files. However, when you option drag an element to copy, it's fine. I have found that deleting the brushes sometimes helps but like bad voodoo it only works sometimes. Dragging layers from the affected file into a new doc also helps at times. I find this issue arises initially from files supplied from prepress houses. Are they using funked out plug ins that cause grief when you don't have that plugin installed on your own machine? This IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM It's been around since CS2, so what gives?
Thanks

  • The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error. [HUH?]

We work on PC's with CS5 installed on approximately 7 seats. One artist posted this error message asking what do you do when you see this? Well now I'm seeing this message. Not funny. The problem started when I attempted to paste an template into a blank document. There was a conflict between swatches. I'm not sure how many there were, around 200 or so. Each one requireing me to click OK. Has there been any fix for this error? I have looked in the messages but nothing yet on how to fix this.

Check you palettes to see if you have an overlfow of deleted color, symbols, styles, and your file size.
Every time I have seen the HUH error was a result from the problem described in the link Monika provided, but there may be other reasons such as the last post mentoning variables.
The problem in the link comes from old tags in earlier verisons of Illustrator. As Illustrator evolved a problem that occurs where tags exponentioanly duplicate, much the tribbles on that star trek episode.
If you work exclsuively in CS6 then you would not get the problem, my guess is your template was built in an older version of Illustrator, probabaly earlier than CS5.

  • Global Colors issue, in Adobe Illustrator CS 3/4

We have this issue where I work of colors remaining in swatches even when deleted, which for some reason creates huge files when saved, 1 gig + at times.
The colors that remain in the swatch are all titled "Global Color", it is possible to select and delete them all, but it is just an illusion, as soon as you copy and paste anything from the document all the Global Colors return.
I have browsed the web and seen no solution to the problem. I have many files infected with these colors and can upload a file somewhere for any one to investigate.
    Thanks.

Same problem here. Any copying and pasting between documents spreads this. Here is what I have tried so far that has not worked
Recovered the file using 'Content Recovery Mode = 1". Edited this in simpletext to remove all code that has "Deleted global colors" & the "Begin PluginObject: Object". There was lots of junk to remove and I got everything in between the open & close tags.
    Saved files as AI3
Copied & Pasted all elements into a new document
Removed all unused Brushes, Swatches, Graphic Styles
Removed all layers & did a save as, the file is still 6mb with nothing in it.
In my situation, 1000s of brushes reappear in the library(see images below) after any copy/pasting. I also had "deleted global colors"(see images below) reappearing but that has gone away since I cleaned up the code. The problem must lie in in the non-standard characters. I also am getting the HUH error(see images below) when saving. I stopped getting the swatch conflict error(see images below) after pasting, after I cleaned up the code. The file though is still huge, slow and any copying is really slow. Can't load CS5 trial here at work(to try out that new cleanup command), but am on CS4 Mac.

  • Double Swatches

Anybody else find that sometimes you get more than one instance of the same swatch in your swatches palette? I've tried merging, restarting Illustrator but they seem persistent.

You should not be able to get exact names, or else you get a warning:
Or if you try changing the color name within the docuemnt
You could have "PANTONE 123 C" & "PANTONE 123 C ", because of the difference in the space.
The only other way I know of you may have 2 exact names is more of a rare technical bug,  if you have an old file and within older postsript tags(eg: "%AI5_Begin_NonPrinting") and import an image with the same name can cause that. A merge swatches should fix that. If the colors keep coming back you may have the HUH error with deleted global colors returning.
If the color is not merging, you may have a placed image with a channel with that name, or an item on a locked/hidden layer.

  • Very slow when selecting objects

I have a problem with illustrator CS5. Whenever I select an object on the canvas by clicking on said object Illustrator freezes for a few seconds (showing me the spinner). This happens whether there is 1 object or 50 on the canvas so it certainly has nothing to do with the number of objects. Oddly, if I click on the canvas and drag-and-select objects this does not happen; they are selected immediately. Of course most of the times I forget this and have to wait constantly because I accidently selected an object directly, which is extremely annoying and almost to the point of unworkable.
Anybody got any ideas about how to solve this?

  • Thousands of brushes & styles from hell!

I need some help. We have an illustraor file that has a bizillion custom loaded brushes and graphic styles from hell, that we got from an agency. We have no idea where they came from but in the list it says brush plugin object 1-2 3 etc up into the thousands! That many just kills the file. The strange thing though is whenever you copy anything from that "infected" file and paste it into a new one, it loads those thousands of brushes/styles into that new one! Also if you try to delete these from the infected file(which takes a solid 10mins!) after you re-open it they are all back again! Whats going on? How do we destroy this menace?!!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. They dropped on you one of nastiest problem in Illustrator I refer to as the HUH error/deleted global colors,  in the UK a few call it lazy duck (why I never found out).
This post will give you a few solutions. To permanently remove this follow my instructions which involve some moderate editing the code in a text editor. There are some other solutions others provide which can help ease your pain if you want to stay away from editing code.
As you have already learned do not copy anything from an infected file to a good one. This spreads very fast, even copying 1 small elements spreads this to another file, and again to every other file that you paste into.

  • File dimension

    File dimension
I'm working on a file with AI CS4 (14.0.0), coupled with Map Publisher 8.3.3, on a IMAC (intel core 2 Duo, Mac OSX 10.6.8).
The file is a map with a TIFF as topographic base and the vectorial drawning by AI. The file was about 200 Mega in size, but after little changes, the dimension exploded to the double, something around 400 Mega. Any idea about what happened and how to reduce the file dimension?
    Thanks

    Thank you Mike.
We try what you suggested and the file dimension decreased to a value very similar to that before the accident.
    Thanks a lot

  • HUH? Error when saving

We are getting a HUH? Error when saving certain files. Once this error shows up, it will save the document, but will a
lways come up when you resave.  It only happens on some documents
We are on a network and share files, but everyone is working in CS4

I have been having this issue on one system. I get an "Unexpected Error cannot save file" when trying to save in any format.
This happens when saving across the network or locally.
    (CS3 Vista)
We have been living with this problem since the beginning.  We simply do not work on this computer in Illustrator for this reason.

  • Error Message from ITS "host parameter is null" - Huh?

I am having trouble submitting a podcast to the iTunes Store.
I have a podcast that I can access directly through my blog: blog.mindthegap.us
The RSS2 feed to my podcast is: http://blog.mindthegap.us/podcasts-only/rss2.aspx
I have subscribed to my podcast through the "Advanced" menu in iTunes. It finds my podcast and adds them to my podcast library.
BUT, when I submit my podcast to the iTunes Store, I get this message:
We had difficulty reading this feed. host parameter is null
I just spent an hour with tech support from godaddy determining that the feed is legit.
Can someone help me resolve why iTS won't take it?
    Thanks

I had sumitted the same (or variations of the same) for nearly a week and after submitting the question to iTunes Technical Support, tried one more time.
Eureka! It was accepted. The only thing that I could possibly have changed was to have added some episode descriptions. The error message "host parameter is null" isn't very helpful if that WAS the solution.
Now, I can get back to my podcasts.

  • Error Code -1401 ...... huh?

I just recently started to experience a problem with my iTunes hanging and having to force quit. It seems that I can access all of my music, and the iTunes store and play all of my movies ..... EXCEPT, that when I scroll to the bottom of my movies page, the beach ball appears and iTunes hangs as it tries to load the last few movie art.
I have my iTunes on an attached Drobo, and when iTunes hangs, and I have to force quit, it has trouble with the Drobo and I have to restart the computer. Well, I decided to see how long it would "hang" and after letting it go for several hours I came back and the movie art didn't load, but the title screen appeared in its place (DVDs ripped from handbrake) and I got error code -1401 and it told me the iTunes library could not be saved. Any ideas what is going on or how I can rectify this problem?

It is an error code for snow leopard, no?
Not if you are having issues with iTunes? Reason why I suggest you try their forums. The only suggestion I can muster up is for you to make sure your iTunes is updated to the latest version & likewise for that piece of software you have connected to it. Or is it hardware?
I could not locate anything regarding error code -1401 searching these forums or Google. I did find something in Knowledge Base but the error pertained to some "script" error in os 9.
I do not know what a Drobo is. Do you get the error if you disable or disconnect it?

  • Error Message -47 = Huh?

OK, so why after I spend hours and hours on my two and only big projects in GB, and get it perfect, does it not allow me to:
    either Share>Export Song to iTunes
    or
    Export Song to Disk
It happened twice now on different projects. Oh and Two's the count. Not pleased.
Both had imported an audio clip plus: one used midi, and the other a mic to add data to the filesize.
These are only 3 minute songs, so it shouldn't be too huge a file.
Good thing I could Audio Hijack it or I would have lost both.
"-47" means what, other than the traditional explative?
And where's the downloadable list of error messages? I looked but couldn't find much that appeared on point.
    Thanks.

Thanks to all three who responded. I got it solved based on the three posts, and it may help everybody who has had this (common) problem.
istevius suggested it might be an IO problem and that it might be looking for an external (addressing?).
Scary Larry reported a re-install solved the problem.
    xs4is said that a re-install was a last choice.
This reminded me of a topic I once posted about having problems with auto-updating iLife. And the conversation there was very similar to this one.
I was told to repair permissions, and that OnyX was a downloadable program from
    http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/
Well, just now, upon repairing permissions, the problem is solved!
I never thought to do it because I had just repaired them a couple (3-4?) days ago.
Looks like I'll have OnyX run a timed maintenance every day as iLife seems to get out of kilter constantly.
Thanks all. Looks like we have our organic neural net working.

  • MDD FW 400 won't boot OS 9 | System error "Unimplemented Trap" Huh?

Hey guys, I need help with a weird problem. I recently bought a MDD dual 1.25 with 1.5MG RAM, CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (3.3), Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2. It came with a single 60 gig drive in it with OS 10.2.6, and it used to boot directly to the OS 9 system folder just fine. I took out that drive, installed it in my old Blue & White POS, gave that to my wife and now have: a seagate 80 gig drive (originally in the B&W), as well as a 160 gig & a 200 Gig.
All three drives have 9.2.2 on their own partitions, as well as on the 2 master drives with OS 10.3.8 & 10.3.6 respectively. I can’t boot directly to 9 from any of them.
The 200 gig drive was the only one of the 3 formatted directly from within the MDD, clean install, with OS9 drivers selected on install.
When I select ANY of the OS9 partitions, even the OS9 system folders on the OSX partitions for that matter, I get:
    1. a grey screen (for a little too long)
    2. then a happy mac box (and the cursor appears)
    3. Then an empty floppy disk icon
    4. Then a “?” inside the floppy disk icon
    5. finally a system 9 style “bomb box” and:
“sorry, a system error occurred. Unimplemented trap. To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key” .
There is a restart button. Perhaps I should mention the error dialog is apparently blocking what appears to be the “Welcome to Mac OS 9.1” screen before the icon march.
Maybe that 9.1 means nothing, but I HAVE NO 9.1 system folders on any disks. They are all 9.2.2... Well that part just bugs me.
The issue is that when I click “restart” and hold down the shift key as directed, the same actions above 1 thru 5 happen, and I’m back at the bomb.
The only way out of the cycle is to “option restart”, and all my partitions show up EXCEPT the OS 10.3.8 partition I had begun the process from. Since I have another OSX partition on one of the disks, I can select that and boot to it no problem. I am then able to select the original OSX partition on the “main” drive, and return to square one, where the cycle began. All the OS 9 system folders can be used to “boot” classic mode, and Tech Tool, Disk Warrior, all are run regularly and report minimal issues. The machine works fine, except for this one issue.
So, why is my MDD preventing me from booting directly into OS9? I read somewhere on another thread that the boot ROM is system specific, so that might answer why the drive pulled from the B&W won’t boot to 9, but the new drive was formatted by the MDD disks, and I even tried a reinstall of OS9 to that disk in an attempt to “unstick” the system. All system 9 folders reside on master drives (so slave is not the issue).
But none of the 9.2.2 folders when selected will bring me anywhere but the bomb, apparently “TRYING” to boot OS9.
WHAT am I missing here? Any ideas?

B&W G3, Mirrored Drive Door G4, Beige Tower   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   Atto USB card, combo drive, super drive

    AJ,
Consider me dyslexic about the MDD. I don't know how
to reset the PMU on it. My beige G3 had a button on
    the motherboard
there is a button on the motherboard of the G4. Location and color may vary. Usually black or red, mounted on a raised silver or black square...typically about 1/4" square
the B&W had a "programmers button" on the front faceplate
That's also known as an 'interrupt switch' With the appropriate debugger software, programmers could push that button and call up the debugger, which would allow them to trace their code and issue low level commands. Sometimes useful to break out of a crashed program without pulling the plug.
I know what I know from doing & reading and yes I have a
system folder or two that began in a 6320CD Performa
I think that was one of the machines that required a special file to boot - which is the file I cannot recall the name.
If that file still exists in your system folder, then it may be the culprit.
I'm certified dangerous because of knowledge gaps....
    Aren't we all?
such as CDEVs are control panels?
CDEV is ControlDEVice, otherwise known as a control panel.
    init's are mostly extensions?
    Yes.
    and what are TSR's?
Terminate and Stay Resident. Actually a DOS term for a program that runs, quits, but remains loaded in memory.
    Apple calls them inits.
Many of the icons that appear during the OS9 boot process are functionally TSRs.
Init conflicts usually were the result of two or more of these programs fighting over the same block of ram.
It sound like you're asking me to search the system
folder for some invisible files correct?
No. The files should be visible. Since you can't yet boot to 9 (thus might not be able to get to use startup manager), I gave you the hard way to find and disable them.
Recall the OS9 startup mananager, which allows you to selectively enable and disable startup items? When you use startup manager, active items (with a check) will be in a folder named, for example, Control Panels. Inactive items, those without a check, will be in a folder named Control Panels (disabled)
To activate the startup manager at boot, hold down the spacebar. It should be the first thing to load. You can select OS9 only, none, or selectively tunr items on/off. Startup manager will automatically move items from the active to the disabled folder.
If you know the file names, you can manually move things from one folder to another, (which is the process I described)
All those files load in alphabetical order. Some of those items want to be loaded first, so the file was named with a leading space, period, or similar. ( Adobe type manager, for example)
There are a couple that are named such that they will load before startup manager.
Since your crash is almost immediate, I'm betting it's one of the first to load TSRs thats causing the problem.
The 80 gig resides in the B&W, so you're suggesting,
pulling it, installing it in the MDD & dragging the
    system folder from there?
That is one method. Or mount the BW with Target disk mode and copy it across. Or copy the system folder to CD.
or if the machines are networked, copy across the network. Or USB memory stick, depending on the size of the folder.
The object is to get a known working drive with a known working/bootable OS into the new machine. Since I know my machine will not see either the 200 or 160 when boot to 9, and on some machines, 9 will not see anything over 128gb, I suggest getting a known good copy of 9 on a drive physically smaller than 128gb (not a sub 128 gb partition of a much larger drive)
Temporarily disconecting the larger drives has no purpose beyond helping eliminate the complexity during diagnostics and troubleshooting. You know they work as intended, and are not part of the problem.
