Hunting down incomplete Path in a layer...???

I am currently tracing a piece of my artwork in CS3 and have multiple little pen tool objects that some of which are not complete paths. Consequently, I am not able to perform a compound path out of the two layers I have created and receive the message "Can't make a compound path. All objects in the compund path must be paths..... Is there a too in Illustrated that can hunt down incomplete paths in a layer?? Thank You!! Brian

Go get Rick Johnson's (http://rj-graffix.com) Select plugin. It will give you a list of Object types which can be selected much larger than the stock installation.

  • How do I move or copy a shape layer's path to another layer?

    i'm looking how to apply an existing vector shape from a layer to another, before it was simple as hell just by alt + drag 'n drop from a layer to another.
    But now this command doesn't work anymore ? so how i can do it ? i need to simply apply a vector clipping mask to a bitmap layer or a group or just apply a shape to another vector layer (not the blending option)
    why it's not anymore possible ? it was simple and easy since CS1 or 2 why have you changed that ?

    It's unclear to me from your keyboard shortcuts whether you are on Windows or Mac, so here are the keyboard shortcuts for both platforms:
    Command-drag (Mac)/Ctrl-drag (Win) the shape layer thumbnail to move the shape path to another layer.
    Command-Option-drag (Mac)/Ctrl-Alt-drag (Win) the shape layer thumbnail to copy the shape path to another layer.
    We had to make this slight change since there is no longer a separate vector mask thumbnail on shape layers.
    For non-shape layers with a separate vector mask, the old keyboard shortcuts should still work for moving/copying the vector mask.

  • Transfer rotoscope path to different layer

    A novice rotoscoper, I got a little confused from having read and watched tutorials with several diffeent styles of rotoscoping.
    Some said to use a layer in between path and actual subject layer with the eyeball turned off.  Then lock the actual target layer so as not to move it around inadvertantly.
    I may have that confused a bit... if so, it not the tutorials doing but mine.
    Cutting to the chase; I have a solid light grey layer with the opacity turned down to 1. above a footage layer of my great grandson doing his first zombie walk.
    I spent a lot of time getting a mask to follow his little head in his trek across the floor.  Now I wanted to transfer the mask path points over to the target footage layer.  I clicked the footage layer with the pen tool to get a mask started, then with focus on the grey layer/Mask/mask path (all the points are lit up so selected) and copy... then to the footage layer Mask/Mask path - paste.  So far so good.
    But somehow I must have moved either the grey solid layer or the footage layer sometime during all the pulling and hauling.so the mask misses the head in a perfect offset all the way thru.  The attached screen shot illustrates it well.  The first one shows the mask on the grey layer, the second on the footage layer.
    I tried lining up the layers by setting the `position' parameters the same, also by just eyeballing the crosshair thing that shows the center of each layer.
    Trouble is I can't find a way to see the crosshair from the one layer as soon as I focus on the other to move it.  Ditto for the path itself.  Soon as focus changes the path does to.  I may be going the opposite way of what I should, but tried it both ways with both layers and am just not getting how to get it right.
    I know I can just do it over, and that isn't really a problem since I can clearly use the practice.  But I feel like there must be a a clearcut way to match up a layers position to a path.
    At this point I've thoroughly confused the heck out of myself and would like to hear someone lay out how to get two layers to match up

    Haa, the footage layer is turned on but the solid layer above was
    set to 1% opacity.. with the eyeball off. cranking that up 100 fixed
    it.  Now I can see the babies head, and the rest is masked out as
    expected.
    You'd
    think the opacity setting on the solid layer would not matter if the
    layer eyeball is off anyway, but apparently it does.  If I scroll the
    opacity up and down with the layer eyeball off,  the babies head
    appears at higher percentages and disappears below 10 or so.
    If you think about it, it makes sense.
    A track matte set to "alpha" applies the opacity value of each pixel in the layer directly above to current layer. So, if Opacity for that layer is 1 per cent, that affects the opacity value of all pixels. Leaving it at 100 per cent, means that fully opaque pixels are applied as fully opaque, and fully transparent pxiels as fully transparent.
    The visibily control (eyeball) for the layer above is turned off aumatically (if it's not already off) as soon as you set a track matte mode. So, the layer is "seen" for the operation regardless of the visibiliy status.
    The column is headed with `T'  and when you check it, it says `preserve transparency'.  I don't quite get what that is for.
    That's called "Preserve Underlying Transparency", and it's a very convenient option... but I am surprised by how many people enable it without knowing what it does. It's not the first time someone gets bitten by it
    And what it does is... this layer (the one with the switch turned on) only exists in areas that are not transparent, when taking into account the combination of all layers below. Example: if you have three circles placed in different places, and then create a large text layer and enable this switch, text will only exist in places that match the circles underneath.
    More info in Preserve underlying transparency during compositing, in After Effects Help on the web.
    Another aspect of this:  I wanted to rotoscope the whole body... so as to be able to insert it on differnet backgrounds.
    I
    could use some ideas on that too.  I started with just the head to get
    an idea of how its done... but I'm guessing it might be easiest done by
    taking several masks to enclose various chunks of the babies body.   Is
    that how its done?
    There are many valid approaches, and whatever works for you is fine. But you can be happy to learn that many experienced roto artists suggest doing exactly as you just described
    I really recommend Mark Christiansen's book After Effects CS4 Visual Effects and Compositing Studio Techniques. It has a lot of useful information on roto work with AE.

  • Can't click drop-down lists in curves adjustment layer

    Odd behavior in released x64 version of CS6 for Windows: on my laptop (ASUS G73S with 1.5 gb nVidia GeForce video), when I crop an image, the drop-down menus in a curves adjustment layer become unclickable. But I can still access the RGB channels using the Alt + 3, 4 and 5 shortcuts. This behavior doesn't occur on my workstation, and if I don't crop the image, the drop-down menus work fine. I have the crop tool set to delete pixels. Also, if I apply curves directly (not with an adjustment layer), the dialog box works OK. And the other adjustment layers seem to be working, too. It's only the curves layer that's doing this.
    Any ideas what this could be? I'm wondering if I should report it as a bug.

    I've noticed that a few times on windows 8 32 bit, photoshop cs6 32 bit with 4gb of ram, a nVidia 8400 gs graphics card and open gl seems to work fine.
    I guess that's probably some kind of glitch.
    One way to get back the dropdown is to click on the Curves Display Options in the flyout menu and then just click OK in the dialog.
    Added: It doesn't seem to happen if the crop tool is set to Classic Mode.

  • Put objects on artboard that are enclosed by a path in one layer

    I have several maps of the world with various adminstrative boarders. The states/provinces their own sub-layer but the counties/districts are not within layers of the corresponding state/provinces in which they are contained. Basically, I'd like to put all the smaller objects within the biger object (compound path).  Is it possible to do this with a script.

    Hi, Last week i got into same problem. But this a bug in one of the patches we applied. We uninstalled the patch and its working fine. Did you applied any patches recently.
    and also check about any special characters like & , ( in presentation layer table/column names of subject area which is not working. I do have some, not sure that might caused some problem. Try to remove them and test.
    and One more thing, check access permission on the columns, hope every one has read access.
    If nothing worked/relevant then try to create a new subject area and add table by table /column by column and test it. So that you will know where is the problem.

  • Clipping paths to varnish layer

    I'm trying to use an applescript that I found for CS2 to copy all images to a varnish layer, apply clipping path, convert to frame, delete image and then fill with color. I will also need to add a stroke and set the object to multiply. I'm thinking it will be better to do that with an object style. I'll put the original script below. I changed CS2 to CS5 but the only result I get is the new layer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS2"
    set myDoc to active document
    tell myDoc
    try
    make layer with properties {name:"Varnish"}
    end try
    set theLinks to every link
    repeat with i from 1 to count of theLinks
    set parentID to id of parent of item i of theLinks
    set oldPath to clipping path of image id parentID
    if the clipping type of oldPath is photoshop path then
    set oldGraphic to parent of item i of theLinks
    set newGraphic to duplicate oldGraphic
    set properties of newGraphic to {item layer:"Varnish"}
    set newpath to clipping path of graphic 1 of newGraphic
    tell newpath
    set convertPath to convert to frame
    end tell
    set properties of convertPath to {fill color:"Magenta"}
    delete graphic 1 of convertPath
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
    end tell

    I also found a javascript that works on selected images. It might be better to just loop that through all the images, but I'm not sure how.
    Thanks!
    if(app.selection.length == 1){
        mySel = app.selection[0];
        try{myClipping = mySel.graphics[0].clippingPath;
            if(myClipping.clippingType == ClippingPathType.ALPHA_CHANNEL ||
                myClipping.clippingType == ClippingPathType.PHOTOSHOP_PATH){
                    alert("Clipping path name: " + mySel.graphics[0].clippingPath.appliedPathName);
            myFrame = mySel.duplicate(undefined,[0,0]);
            myFrame.graphics[0].clippingPath.convertToFrame();
            myFrame.graphics[0].remove();
            myFrame.fillColor = app.activeDocument.swatches.item("Registration");
            myFrame.select();
        catch(e){alert("There is no clipping path applied!");}

  • Is it possible to copy groups/paths from one layer and paste to other multiple layers?

    Note Layer > Duplicate will not work in this regard, because I want to copy one group of paths/elements from one layer to other existing layers, not to a new layer.
    I have not found a command for this, nor have I found any scripts. Note I'm using CS3 but have been thinking about an upgrade.
    Thanks in advance.

    I actually use the Release to Layer (Sequence) function frequently to build my animated steps, for example when animating some text in a way that Premiere won't handle. This releases all the intermediary objects in a transition to new layers, but the background image still needs to be manually pasted into each newly created layer.
    I have read about "Paste to all Artboards," but that feature was not included in CS3. I believe it was released in CS5. Perhaps I need to get an upgrade. Thank you for your kind replies.
    I am a Mac-based CAD user going back to the mid-1990s, and it's interesting how many of the helpful, time-saving features we took for granted in those drawing programs are either not included in Illustrator products or are just being added in recent releases. I would still be using programs such as PowerDraw/PowerCADD if they hadn't gone out of business. Even with some of the expansion packs I've used, Illustrator doesn't hold a candle to PowerCADD.

  • DefaultMutableTreeNode.getPath() returns incomplete path

    My application is quite complex, I'll try to explain the problem:
    I'm using a JTree with nodes derived from DefaultMutableTreeNode and without a
    TreeModel.
    Everytime I close a node (collapseNode) I delete all subnodes
    (node.removeAllChildren) and add a dummy-node to make the node still look
    expandable.
    Everytime I open a node (expandNode) I delete the dummy-node and add subnodes
    via node.add(newNode).
    Now here's the problem:
    If some nodes have been collapsed and expanded again, the child nodes seem to
    contain invalid data. Their getPath() method doesn't return the full path from
    root to childNode but only the childNode!
    I couldn't find similar problems in the bug database or in the forums.

    I am also facing the same problem

  • Shut down incomplete

    Hi, my MacBook Pro does not complete shut down normally.
    After shut down command, the dock + menu dissapear normally but the sceen stays lit indefinitely, either with the standard image or with a blue screen.
    In order to complete shut down, I need to "kill" with prolonged pressing the power button.
    Apple Assistance hanv'nt found the cause so far.
    Anyone with an idea ?

    HI, I have tried to source the problem or course, suspecting applications / server conections / external hardware and trying in all possible combinations. This includes  shutting down with all visible applications shut manually, restart in "safe mode", alternative locations (including ethernet connection in Brazil during a recent trip there). Problem continues to occur in these instances. One of the difficulties is that the problem is intermitent and usually does not occur unless the computer has been running for some time. It sounds to me that it could be caused by some invisible application or process running in the back-ground and only being active at some times or in certain occasions.

  • Draw a path and straighten layer beneath?

    I'm sure this has been asked before but is there a quick fix to this.
    I have a panoramic where the horizon is a little wobbly. I can then draw a path along this path. Can I then straighten this line out?

    You could do this with Puppet Warp. It's far from automatic, but I'd call that horizon more than "a little wobbly", so it will take a lot of time and patience to get it right.

  • Hunting down a Illustration Technique?

    I've seen this type of Illustration before, some of which I've seen looked as if the Illustration was square. Either way does anyone know how to create a look like the one seen in the image, or a secondary look that I described ?

    For my part you are welcome, StrongBeaver.
    Doug,
    Jacob, how  in the world do you expect to be helpful to StrongBeaver with an  outlook like that?! He WANTS to know "what is in them"! How else will he  be able to emulate the illustration style?! He's expressly asking us to  deconstruct the artwork... identify its component parts so he can  reconstruct  them himself.
    And  besides, why are you so certain her reputation will be compromised  because of a seed? In some parts of the world, she would be aggrandized  for that seed!
    I assumed that StrongBeaver knew her well enough to know, and that others did not have to.
    In addition, I sense a certain shyness and innocence, judging from her posture, the bare knees and flat shoes, and the way she has chosen to (almost) cover her hair; which, by the way reminds me of chi mijikash, and makes me wonder where Harron is, and what he is doing that is more urgent than this.
    But all this is just another challenging and pleasant case with different interpretations of the OP.
    I apologize to both of you for the late answer: the night before yesterday the router took a direct hit of lightning, and I had to wait for shops to open before I could start repairing the wired network; with many hours wasted, and the inability to post in the forums round midnight (here, 3PM PST), I decided I had to catch up with other duties.

  • How to get the full path or name of the Layer to which Filter is applied?

    Hi All,
              I have created a layer using some background image as source. How to get the name or ful path of the background image?
    I checked the documentation and found GetPathNameProc(SPPlatformFileSpecification*) function, but I couldn't get the parameter SPPlatformFileSpecification*.
    Is there any other way to get the file path of background layer in my custom filter?
    Thanks,
    Dheeraj

    If this is a client side application then I'd say look into drag-n-drop tutorials.
    i.e. drag file to your application, action listener fires, create File object giving you full name and path of users action.
    If this is a web application then look into the "multipart/form-data" content type specifications on how to upload files.
    i.e. user specifies file from <input type='file' ... /> type, submits, servlet receives data and recreates file locally on application server side.
    If you are thinking that all you need to send a file to a program is the full path and name in a textbox its a little bit more complicated then that.
    Good luck, hope that helps!

  • Path Layer Deselecting after Making Selection

    Hello,
         As I use this tool for multiple fast renderings, I love to use the Path Selection tool to modify the selection as such in quick succession. However, it seems as though after my slection is made, usign the path, the path layer disappears, needing reselection in the Path Window to do so. Here's what happens:
    Step 1
    I my paths, in which I want to first select this box, and then combine them at differing feather overlays. So naturally, I select the center most item, and...
    Step 2
    Up comes the dialog box as normal. I set the feather, hit enter and...
    Step 3
    Where did my other paths go?!?!
    Step 3 (Previous to CC, at least in CS5)
    Here I had the option to grab another path with my tool, overlap a feather at a different amount. Why does this happen?
    Is there a way to revert the tool back to the CS5 way of Selecting? Please let me know, thanks.

    I believe your paths are still there, if i look at the path's palette.
    When you deselect the path in the path's palette, no path will be visible in the stage. Try adding fill color and see.
    Step 01 and 02, your path was still selected in the path's palette but in step 03 it wasn't. Once you made the selection click on the path in the path's palette and see if it is visible or not.
    Check my tutorial on 'How to hide the path when adding layer style'. If the path is not selected in the path's palette, then it looks like it is not there.
