Tell me about the hush hush recall on Seagate hard drives ! And how it relates to writing large files like Mavericks.

    You mean this one? http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/
It wasn't hush hush at all and it doesn't relate to Mavericks at all either. Maybe you could explain your question in more detail.

  • Another Start Up/Random Shut Down Problem

Ok, so I know there are a million threads aleady about this, but I really cant seem to find someone who has a real good suggestion, if there is any...So I have a Mac Book 512/60GB and have had the random shut down thing happen a few times. One time (today actualy) I couldnt start up. I pushed the button about 5 times and the light came on and then turned right off. I waited a little bit and then it worked. Twice when this happened and after I started up the light for the iSight stayed on and the camera didnt work until I restarted. I was in iChat using Vid chat when this happened. I was thinking about making a genius bar appointment to see what their advice was because my local store seems to be up to date on most things and this seems to be a big problem, but I figured I would check on here first. Does anyone have an actual solution that has worked for them???
    Thanks a lot
    -Alex
    Mac Book   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2Ghz, 512 RAM, 60GB

Well the Genius bar ppl were great as always. They told me they could do it in-store but it would take more than 4 days and it seems that people have been getting theirs back fairly quick. I backed up everything on my iBook and had the macbook shipped to my school, so hopefully it will beat me there. He told me they have seen several of these, but when I tried to get details they seemed a little hush hush and confused. The common agreement from the geniuses was that it was a logic bored issue and thats what he wrote on the work authorization, i also need a topcase replacement as there is obvious discoloration. Im gona assume that they do run additional tests and not just follow what the "genius" says, if it is not the logic board that is causing the probs...right? When I get my macbook will it say the work that was done on it?? Hopefully this will be fixed, because a random shutdown macbook is baisicly a useless macbook when you use it all the time in school.

  • Amazon prime video airplay blocked on all Apple devices, why?

Why is it that Apple cannot figure out how to come to an agreement with the largest online book and video supplier in regards to making apple airplay available for Amazon prime video account holders.  Amazon Prime is a pretty cool technology but politics and money are blocking Apple users from being able to use this technology.  You can hear the movie but there is no picture.  Nothing is wrong, Amazon has just blocked all Apple users from what I can tell.  It does seem a bit hush, hush for some reason.  I love Apple, but they need to learn to play with others better or they will find themselves in decline with all the Microsoft tablet products out there.  Anyone wish to weigh in on this dilemma?

While I agree Apple cannot control Amazon, but on the other hand Apple could try to negotiate on behalf of all their customers.  Apple is pretty powerful company, no excuses for not trying to do something.  There is now an app, and we know that Amazon does market themselves as not being exclusive. This is an incredible technology and should be enjoyed by Apple customers.

  • The beginning of the end for OS X?

I would like to hear from someone at Apple about this just to ease my mind.
Now that you can run WinXP on a Mac, does this indicate the beginning of a phasing-out of OS X?
I switched to Mac because Linux did not offer ease and features that OS X offers. In my opinion, OS X is the perfec Unix distribution. I love it and I don't ever want to lose it. I have no intention of going back to Linux and I won't run Windows, I don't care how much they make it look like OS X.
So, is OS X going to continue?

Oh yeah....absolutely... OS X is here to stay.
Notice that Apple has been hush hush about 10.5 aka Leopard? The reason? i think....is that they got some new innovative features that they don't want Windows Vista to copy and implement in their 2007 release. So Apple's been taking it a bit slower, doing it better....coming up with new innovative features. The first one leaked out.... BOOT CAMP! BOOT CAMP is not for you or I since we both love OS X and don't want to run windows or Linux... but Boot Camp is the perfect solution to those people that NEED a windows box just to run some proprietary software or for school purposes (law school for example) part time.
OS X is here to stay. This summer at WWDC, we're going to get a taste of some tasty new features....AND AND...hopefully replacement towers for the G5...with intel chips, of course.
    no need to worry there.

  • 4G LTE (i mean, 1X) in Morgantown, WV

So, now AT&T has rolled out 4G in Morgantown. I also read that U.S. Cellular, a mediocre regional carrier at best, is rolling out 4G in Morgantown next month. And, where do we stand with Verizon's 4G LTE in Morgantown? Oh yeah, we don't have a clue because Verizon is hush hush on everything they do. I'll continue to enjoy my super fast 1X (sense the sarcasm?) while a friggin' regional carrier (U.S. Cellular) rolls out 4G before the mighty Verizon Powerless.

Well it happen's and that's why it's all ways a good idea to look at the maps to see what you are getting as 3g/4g gos.
I think unless you have unlimited smart phone data. You should jump ship, if they can't fix it very soon.
I know If I only had 1x, I would jump ship.( Yes I have had to deal with 1x, sprint LIKE 3G and AT&T throttled LIKE 4G LTE so I know how it's like.)
Sorry they did not even put up some kind of 3G even over there.
Good luck with what ever you do about it.

  • Samba turning itself off

I can't figure out why Samba is turning itself off. It happened once or twice last month but now it's weekly when the pc client id logged in or not. There nothing obvious in the log files. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the latest OS updates?
Is anyone else seeing this problem and do you have a fixed!
    I'm running OS 10.5.8 on a 2 X 3 GHz Quad xserve with 16gb memory.
    Thanks,

Still, go to the Apple store when you get back. They are very responsive to issues (they might be very hush hush about telling you what it is, but they will do somehting about it).
If there's one great thing about Apple is how they treat their customers. Go to the store and if they don't respond contact Customer Care (search Customer Care on the Apple website to get their number). I had issues with my iPod and they exchanged it two weeks after my warranty was over and then two moths later (that was the third time they had to fix my iPod). After the last time, the guy at the store gave me the number for Customer Care and they gave me a new iPod Video.
The moral of the story is, don't worry if you 90 days are over, they will do something for you (maybe call customer care right way, rather than their help line).
I am expiriencing the same issue with my MacBook. I am also abroad, so I'll have to wait until I get back to the States in two weeks. I do have the three year AppleCare program, so that's not an issue for me and I'll wait until I get back to the US, but I'd encourage you to contact them through other sources. Also, depending on where you are there might be a local store that will cover the warranty. I am in Venezuela and I know of one place that will honor my warranty here (I don't know if they are listed in the Apple website, but you might ask around and see if there are stores that carry apple, call them and see if they support the warranty or if they know who will).

  • Custom icon on a disk shared via Airport Extreme

I have a USB hard drive that I am sharing via an airport extreme. In the finder, under "Shared" I see my airport extreme. When I click on that, I see my external drive. I would like to change the icon for that, but the standard Get Info -> paste doesn't seem to work.
I've tried to set a custom icon on a test folder on my hard drive and it works. I also tried it on a test folder on the USB drive shared via airport extreme, and that worked. But I can't set the icon for the drive itself. Any suggestions?

No, they pulled it, even though Steve promised the wireless backup feature in his latest keynote. One hour into it to be exact.
    http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/d7625zs/event/
Now, I am very much against releasing a product before its ready, so I respect them for that. However Steve VERY clearly states that it was already working and would release with Leopard. He usually makes a very very clear distinction between things they "can/might" do and things that are working. He even goes into detail about how all the house macs can wirelessly use the same backup through the Airport Express. THEY EVEN HAVE A PICTURE of it!
So they need more time, okay. But I feel lied to. The least they could do is make a press release with an ETA! The hush hush, makes it seem like they are going to scrap it and pretend it never happened.

  • [FIXED] No video thumbnails in File Manager (Thunar or PCManFM)

    Hello,
I have a problem of video thumbnails in my file manager. I browse the web a lot to found a answer.
The only solution I found are:
    - install tumbler
    - remove all cache: .thumbnails, .cache/Thunar and .config/Thunar
    - try the svn version of ffmpegthumbnailer in aur
I try all of those 3 solution, none fix my probleme.
And in Thunar or PCManFM I have thumbnails for picture and pdf but not for videos.
I'm up to date and here the version installed on my computer:
    extra/thunar 1.2.3-1 (xfce4) [installed]
    extra/tumbler 0.1.22-3 (xfce4) [installed]
    extra/ffmpegthumbnailer 2.0.7-1 [installed]
I have a desktop file for ffmpegthumbnailer in /usr/share/thumbnailers/ffmpegthumbnailer.desktop, and when I try ffmpegthumbnailer in a shell it's works fine.
here the content of the file:
    [Thumbnailer Entry]
    TryExec=ffmpegthumbnailer
    Exec=ffmpegthumbnailer -s %s -i %u -o %o -c png -f -t 10
    MimeType=video/flv;video/webm;video/mkv;video/mp4;video/mpeg;video/avi;video/ogg;video/quicktime;video/x-avi;video/x-flv;video/x-mp4;video/x-mpeg;video/x-webm;video/x-mkv;application/x-extension-webm;video/x-matroska;video/x-ms-wmv;video/x-msvideo;video/x-msvideo/avi;video/x-theora/ogg;video/x-theora/ogv;video/x-ms-asf;video/x-m4v;
To finish I will add that I'm on awesome.
Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

  • Buying TV podcasts

I would like to buy TV episodes from the iTunes store in the US. But I am not located in the United States. If I were to open an iTunes account using a payment address either in the United Kingdom or Switzerland, will I be able to purchase TV episodes from the US iTunes store or will I only be able to purchase from the UK or Switzerland store only?

    Thormod.RK,
    You're welcome!

Firstly, there's no feature yet, not even in the US, where you could use iTunes to download HD movies. Only via Apple TV!
    Thormod.RK asked:
I suppose contacting Apple doesn't give me more information either? (Considering they're kind of hush-hush initially about new services...)
Right. However, you may want to leave feedback, by filling [this form|http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html].

  • Want to upgrade my G5 iMac to a 2.0ghz MBP

    Hello,
I am (was?) seriously considering purchasing a 2.0Ghz MBP and then selling my G5 1.83Ghz iMac.
My iMac has been really great to me but given my newish job and the fact that I've been really mobile lately, I much prefer a notebook computer.
But, after reading all the posts here about whirring problems, heat problems, logic board problems, not to mention next Tuesday quickly approaching... I'm wondering if I should a) wait or b) not get a MBP at all.
My question to you is: what do you think? Is it a safe time to purcahse the MBP given its problems and Apple's hush-hush attitude?
Or should I consider a Macbook? Or does the Macbook have similar problems??
What about a refurbished notebook (Intel or non-Intel notebook)?
Any advice/opinions you could share would be most helpful!
    Thank you!!
    christine

No, Guts was suggesting that you wait until the next version of the MBP is released with Core 2 duo processor chips. And he's betting that all of your apps would be available in UB format by then, so you don't take the speed and memory hit of running under Rosetta.
Apple has just released a new line of iMacs with Core 2 duo processors and they are a tremendous bargain, faster than your current computer. But you would still have to run Photoshop under Rosetta. And they are not notebooks.
We don't know when Apple will release the next generation of MacBook Pros. My own bet is that Photoshop will still have to run under Rosetta when they are released -- which could be any time from right away until early 2007. (Apple for some reason keeps that to itself. <grin>.)
You didn't specify whether your current PowerMac has 1 or two processors. If it has only one processor, you might find that a MacBook Pro (current model) will be competitive in most Photoshop tasks, especially if you install 2 GB RAM. And the MBP will run Photoshop more quickly when Adobe finally releases a UB version of Photoshop.
I wouldn't be put off too much by the problems you see on this site. My week 12 MBP has been perfect since I received it on 30 March and has paid for itself in productivity. My guess is that most MBP owners are quite satisfied. For Photoshop work you should consider the MacBook Pro line, as it has a better graphics card and larger screens than the MacBook line. The 17-inch MacBook Pro is a bit large for carrying around all the time, but may be worth looking at.
As you are already into Macs, I don't think you would be as happy with a PC notebook. When the next generation of MBPs is released, they will be a bit faster than the current generation. And that next generation won't be as fast as a subsequent generation. But a current generation MBP would be a much better buy than a PowerBook, because the PowerBook will be much slower running the next generation of Photoshop than a MBP.

  • Can the new iPhone allow landscape/ horizontal keyboarding for text/ email?

One of the things that made me stay with Blackberry was that it was clearly better at typing text and emails. I chose not to buy the original iPhone based on the difficulty of typing text and email in only a portrait/ vertical setting.
Viewing horizontal/ landscape web pages is available - what I would like to know is if horizontal typing for text and email will be a feature?

We will more than likely see when it comes out and we get to play with it. "Small" features like this usually don't get much airtime during a keynote, but it would be nice to see, I hope it's there.
Maybe a mag will do a report on it before we get it.
Thanks for your response. Its too bad everything is so hush hush. It would be nice to see a spread on any new features or enhancements. Hopefully before the actual hands on experience.

  • 2.X observations

My wife and I got the original iPhone(s) the day after they came out. We loved them! Not perfect but definately the coolest phone we have ever had. I was so very excited about all the great things that were coming about in version 2.0 (I am MS Exchange guy working at an email hosting company, email is my life and activesync was a hot topic).
Unfortunately the 2.X experience has been doing nothing but frustrate me since it's release. My phone was unusabe without even a single new app installed. I was using POP for my personal account like always, and replaced my work POP account with activesync. I couldn't even read an entire email or web page without the phone crashing more than once.
I tried erasing the phone and starting over from scratch instead of restoring - same result. I tried swapping the SIM cards with my wife's phone so that I was on different hardware, then set everything up from scratch again - same result. Even went and bought the 3G after that thinking it would help, even be better - same result. Killing the activesync account didn't help either.
Then one day when the newest phone was being particularily tempermental, all the crashing just suddenly...stopped. It was inexplicable, no update was released that day or anything that could have changed. Not in our Exchange environment or for the phone. Still no crashes and it's been about a week. But it's too soon to rejoice.
That day the phone would not stop switching between normal/silent mode, as if I was just constantly moving the quiet switch above the volume from normal to silent and back. Since it was killing my battery and my ability to actually tell what vibrations were valid I left it in silent mode until I could get home and erase/restore it again. Since then it no longer switches those modes randomly, but I am fighting with the ringer volume. Quite often it tries to decrease the ringer volume to the minimum setting, no matter how many times I reset or restore the phone.
I am about at wits end with this. I guess I should go see an Apple Genius again to see if I can get it replaced. Getting a replacement would be my 4th go-around on different iPhone hardware since 2.0 came out, and I'm still having the same problems or new ones.
2.0.2 also does nothing about my issues with staying on 3G. I still seem to constantly revert to Edge, or only show one or two bars when I am on 3G.
No keyboard lag yet, but that wouldn't manifest itself until awhile after a restart.
I am a geek by trade so I am feeling like I have a lemon, or somehow I emit iPhone killing lazers from my body.
I can't really be the only one having these many issues with 2.X can I?
Am I doing something seriously wrong here?
    Bueller?

Update: still no problems solved for me with this update. The keyboard just lagged again and the ringer volume still does as it wishes.
I've read about some of these problems in the forums. I also actively read patch notes when other companies publish them. I really wish that Apple would publish what is done in these updates. It's usually customary to set expectations with customers, but with Apple so hush-hush about everything, we really have no idea what to expect from one update to the next.
