HV20/FCP6/FW Problems/Capture Issues/WTH?!?!?!?!?!

Hello everyone. I have a Canon HV20 that was working fine for a day or two while I was capturing both HDV and DV footage from MIni DV tapes. I opened the log and capture window after changing tapes and BAM! it said it couldn't find the deck.
At first, I set the app up just like the Apple site said, and everything worked perfectly, even when dumping DV footage. Cameras setting never changed from factory default. Now this, and what's worse is that my computer won't recognize the FW device. I do have a G-tech plugged in as well, and with no HV20 the computer recognizes it in the FW800 port, but as soon as I plug in the HV20 the computer doesn't recognize anything though the drive still operates.
I get this from FCP:
"Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device."
I get this from System Profiler:
"FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec"
If your advice is to purchase a new 17" MBP, I just might since i have had it with this POS right now.

Assuming the your FCP6 setup has not changed:
Canon cameras do not play well with other devices (hard drive for example) on the same FW bus. My son had capture issues with a Canon HV30 and G-Raid 2 on a 2007 Quad Mac Pro.
The work-around:
Capture to an internal drive and move the media to the external, switch scratch disk, and reconnect media. (not ideal).
The "fix":
Purchase a FW card for the MBP Express card slot and connect one of the FW devices to it. (Each device on different FW Buses.

  • Problems capturing clips

I using the latest version of FCP with a Blackmagic card. Everything has been working fine until today. I'm having problems capturing clips. I'll start Log & Capture, grab a clip, the window displays it is capturing it, and then when I look at the logging bin, my clip is not there. But if I look in the capture scratch folder, the clip is there.
Now, if I try to import that or any other clip, FCP gives me an error message. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I would appreciate your help.

Probably a Black Magic issue so be prepared to talk to them.
To debug this, you have to take the Black Magic stuff out of the equation to determine if FCP is at fault. If you have any DV device, try to capture from it.

  • Problems capturing audio track

I am having a problem capturing from my DV camera into Final Cut Pro (version 5.1.4) on a souped up G4. I made a few changes to the hardware configuration recently, but the problem started prior to these upgrades so I don't think it is related. I installed an ATA drive and replaced a defective USB2/FW800 Sonnet card.
I thought I had a problem with the playback head on the camera when the capture issues first started. I got black horizontal bars on the screen of the camera as well as on the screen when I attempted to capture footage. I also got timecode error messages. I was able to capture some of the tape in FCP using a different camera, but upon examination I noticed both audio tracks are missing small segments of data. There are a few blank spots scattered throughout the footage. The picture is fine. The problem is in the audio tracks only. both tracks in the same area.
One of the camera repair people I talked to said the tape could be bad. Does this make sense if only the audio track is missing segments and the picture track is complete?
Thanks, I appreciate any help you can give me in figuring this out.

Thanks for your suggestions and opinion. I am reading everyone's comments. In order to get the most from this discussion, please answer each of these questions separately so the people who are following it will have no trouble following the answers that apply to each.
I distinctly remember when I was shooting the footage of the problem tape, the picture looked fine. It was not until I tried to review the tape that the problem appeared.
    1. Is it possible that the camera works for shooting but the camera playback head is causing problems?
    2. Can a bad playback head damage the tape on playback?
    2. Can shooting onto a bad tape damage a camera?
    3. Is it possible to shoot with a camera with a bad playback and then use another drive for playback?
Thanks for your help. I do know a few people who are having playback problems, since all the tape cameras are getting old, so we appreciate this discussion.

  • Problems Capturing Video via FireWire

I have had problems capturing video via firewire on my MacBook Pro. It is an early 2008 model. I have tried capturing video using multiple programs, cables and cameras. In both Final Cut Express and iMovie ('08 and '09) I loose the connection mysteriously. It just stops sensing my camera mid capture. I can shut the computer down, programs down and cameras down but nothing seems to work consistently in getting it to work. The weird part is that it does work some times. Recently I tried an auto capture of a whole miniDV tape through a sony handicam via iMovie '09. It got 20mins of the tape then stopped and rewound the tape. When trying it again it read "connection error". I could not get it to work. I put the computer to sleep and came back later. It worked but only captured about 10 minutes then shut down the whole camera and import completely. I switched to manual import and it will now only let me capture about 20 seconds at a time. What is going on? To me it seems like the port itself is malfunctioning and disconnecting the signal randomly. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the cause and what can I do about it?

I've been reading the forums and it seems that there is an issue with the Firewire port in general. I have an external firewire 800 HD and when copying large files or a large number of files the HD gets dismounted unexpectedly. Your case seems similar in that we are both transferring large files via Firewire. Anyone have any fixes for this?

  • 24p advanced capture issue

    hi, folks...
posing an old question that was never completely resolved because i've bumped up against it again.
here's the situation: i've shot and edited hours of footage at 24p advanced on a canon xl2. captured using 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal without problems-- edited nicely into sequence.
but somewhere along the line something happened. now when i capture 24p footage and edit into the timeline i get motion blur every fourth frame (the pulldown frame?) the only way i can get a clean clip is if i capture 23.98 footage using the DV NTSC (30 fps) setting rather than 2:3:3:2 pulldown, then use the "advanced pulldown removal" feature from the tool bar after the fact (thanks patrick for this work-around).
so... situation is i can deal with this funky capture issue but it's an extra step and a pain in the rear-- anyone have any theories on how this happened and/or a permanent fix so i can shoot and capture the way fcp is supposed to work?
btw: checked the camera set-up again -- still 24p advanced, triple checked my fcp capture and sequence settings-- it's all at 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal and 23.98 as it should be. clip analysis on captured clips shows frame rate coming in at 23.98... as it should. couldn't find anything on topic in the search. appreciate thoughts. thanks much.

have you changed or downloaded anything at all that
might force the change in procedure, like a quicktime
update perchance, ipod update maybe???? just fishing
    for a clue......
thanks, zeb... but no. i do remember the day things went haywire-- i captured footage off one of the reels and noticed two of five clips had captured at 29.97 instead of 23.98. it was puzzling but i went back through capture presets, sequence, etc and remember double checking and resetting all the pertinent settings before going back and recapturing the footage that had come in a 29.97. it then captured at 23.98-- but the every-fourth-frame motion blur issue cropped up at that point. and it's been happening ever since.
i know the fcp settings are correct -- i just don't get it.
fyi... i notice that as footage plays out through the firewire from the xl2, it looks fine in the camera viewfinder but i can see the motion issues on the log and capture window as it plays-- this is obvious even before initiating capture.

  • Are there problems capturing with Quicktime 7.3.1?

Are there still problems capturing video on FCP or Xpress using Quicktime 7.3.1. or later?
I'm using Quicktime 7 which does work, but for some time any newer version of Quicktime would not capture video more than 5 mins.
    Has that problem been solved?

I'm going to have to disagree with you.
I've gone through every upgrade of QT 6 and 7 without issues. Am I lucky or do I just keep a clean system with no added junk or simply edit mainstream formats while staying away from Facebook/YouTube/fringe consumer formats? Who knows what keeps my machines happy? But they are.
Specific updates of QT did not break EVERY installation of Final Cut. If you have a specific issue with a specific piece of software (ie FCE) , its best to ask questions in the forum dedicated to that software.
Of course, it's always best to let the early adopters suffer and if your machine is working fine, don't upgrade anything.
    Good luck.

  • I have a Sony NEX-VG10, edit with Prem Pro and am having serious capturing issues.

I recently purchased the Sony NEX-VG10 and am really excited about it.  I have run into some serious problems capturing the footage, though.  I have a 2010 iMac, am running OSX 10.8.2  Mountain Lion and use Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 to edit.  I've discovered that the files on the camera are .MTS, a file format with which I am unfamiliar (not surprising, I'm not exactly a newb, but the past few months is the first time I've started editing seriously - I am more a writer/director/producer and could do basic stuff with FC7 and Prem Pro - now I own my own production company and am getting down to the nitty gritty).
    But I have found that
    1. I can't capture using bridge, it doesn't recognize the file format.
    2. When I plug the camera into the computer and go straight to the files, I don't even get individual files.  All the information is contained in what looks like a Quicktime movie, but isn't recognized by Quicktime or any other program as anything.
    3.  When I go into the camera files using the import function in Premiere Pro, I find the individual .MTS files - which say they are Unix Executable files (no idea what that means), I can import them into PP, but the quality is atrocious.  Grainy and pixely.  Even when viewing them in full res playback mode.
    4. I bought Bigasoft Total Video converter (wicked cool program).  I import the files using PP, then go find them in this program, and convert them into .mov files - the quality is still atrocious (not surprised, as the .mts files look cruddy, what could I expect when I converted them - but was worth a try).
I need to capture these files in full quality (oh - the file information says they are in 1920 x 1080 (1.0), so it's not like I filmed in a low res.
The software that came with the camera is for PCs, I've searched for answers to these problems, and although I've found similar, I can't find anything that actually helps me.  Can anyone out there tell me exactly what to do?!?  I would be most appreciative.  My new company's success depends on it!

If you'll type mts into the search field for these communities, you will see a plethora of threads on the subject - I was going to link to one, but there are so many, it'd be best for you to read through several. In any case, of note is the fact that you might be able to import into iMovie directly as long as you do not shoot in 50/60 fps - in order to be able to read it, it has to be either 30fps for NTSC or 24 for PAL.
Not sure if the frames per second problem has anything to do with your lousy quality problem, but it might. The other concern is that Sony has not and does not really play nice with anything Apple - that was one of the reasons I chose a Canon.

  • Panasonic DVCPRO HD VTR capture issue

Hi, I am new to Final Cut and am having a problem capturing recently shot DVCPRO HD footage into Final Cut. I set it up to the proper settings and went to the log and capture window. THe problem is that the Final Cut doesn't seem to have control over the device. If I press play on the VTR (Panasonic 1200A), the footage comes through and plays in the capture window. BUT, I cannot control the device with my mouse (by pressing play, stop, etc) in the capture window. Also, when I type an In and an Out and try and "capture clip" it says it is "cueing" the clip but is never able to connect with the VTR. Any ideas? Something I'm missing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Brendan

Are we to assume that you have installed the optional AJ-YA(D)120AG board?
    and are connected via FW?
    And in menu 600 you've selected 1394?

  • Problem capturing PAL video into FCE HD

I'm having a problem capturing video from a PAL MiniDV tape. The tape was recorded on a PAL camera during a shoot in India; when I got home with the tapes the cameraman gave me, I was unable to view them on (or capture them from) my (NTSC) Canon GL-1 to my PowerBook G4 running FCE HD3.5.1 (external hard drive).
I borrowed a friend's Sony Handycam and CAN view the tape without a problem on that, AND get a "VTR OK" message in the FCE "Capture" window (though I get color bars and a "Preview Disabled" screen). I can also control the tape playback from the FCE Capture interface.
However, when I click "Capture Now", after clicking the "Play" button, I get a dialogue box that says "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
I have tried a number of different "Easy Setup" device control options, but to no avail.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm going to correct myself ... although I was able to capture the contents of ONE tape, after that the problem returned and I cannot capture anything else (even that same tape). So it seems the "solution" was not "FireWire-all-the-way" but remains out of my reach for the moment ...

  • Problem capturing with Final Cut Pro 5.0

I'm capturing from my MiniDV camera via firewire. I've checked if my scratchdiscs have enough room and it has plenty (250gb).
Everytime I go to capture, a box comes up that says "General Error" with no error code. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong or what's wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello ,
I have a problem in Issues/messages table in tx RMMAIN
Problem:When i click on create "Issue" tab in RMMAIN,issue tab is disabled.
Please let me know what i have to do?
    Regards,

    Hi,
Is this problem with a roadmap assigned with a project or a roadmap not yet assigned with a project?
If this roadmap is assigned with a project, then:
    1. Go to tcode: SOLAR_PROJECT_ADMIN->select the project to which this roadmap is assigned.
    2. Go to tab->Project Standards->Select the tab "TABS".
    3. Check the visibility of the tab "Issues/Messages". It should be "Visible".
If still the problem persists, then check whether you have this SAP_RMMAIN_EXE authorization.
Check also that you have activated BC sets for service desk.

  • What kind of real time problems and issues arise in Data Modelling

    Hellooo experts,
I am not a BW expertise, so just want to gather some knowledge on Problems and issues related to DATA MODELLING, if any body have a document or a link can you please snd it to [email protected] or reply to this post. I promise to reward you for proper answers hope this is the way i say thanks for your help.
    kishore

    hi kishore,
The first and most important problem is to understand <b>Clients requirement</b>. Clients even some time not aware of how to utilize efficiency of BW, as they are very much use to with traditional SAP R/3 reporting. So most of time we have to suggest options to client.
If we come to technical aspect, than identifying <b>Key Figures and Characterstics</b> is the most important task. And how you map that to <b>available infoobjects</b>. Attributes also plays major roles, like which attributes is better to use as navigational one and which as exclusive attribute.
Their is long list for data modelling issues, its better you refer either <b>Mastering BIW</b> book by Mac'Donalds. And SAP Help Library is also having good material.

  • Problem capturing and/or importing hd video

I have always edited standard def video but I trying to switch to hd. I have no problem capturing standard def video into final cut.
Final cut express 4 will not capture my 1080i hd footage that I shot on a professional sony cam. So then I captured the footage on quicktime thinking I could import into final cut from quicktime. When I try to import, the only thing that shows up is the audio and when I put it in the timeline it says 'codec could not be opened'. I called apple support and he suggested that I need to convert the footage but I don't even know what program to use. I would think this sony camera shoots pretty standard format that would be universal. Is there a setting in final cut that I need to change? Whats going on? If I can't get this fixed I may have to go back to standard def video. Thanks.

Exactly what model Mac do you have, what versions of OS X, QT and FCE are installed?  What is the capacity and free space on your system HD?
Are you using an external hard drive for your video ... if so, what make/model, capacity and free space, and is it connected to your Mac via USB, FW or TB?
(FYI, dropped frames typically occur when your hard drive cannot deliver the video fast enough; this usually happens if your system HD and/or external hard drive are more than 50% full and/or if you are using an external USB drive. It can also happen if you have other programs running the same time as FCE.)

  • PROBLEMS CAPTURING, DROP FRAMES ON 4.5

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO SINCE I HAVE UPDATED TO THE LATEST VERSION I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS CAPTURING.

I'm not at my Mac right now to check, but it should be something like this:
Open System Preferences (usually located on the Dock).
    Click on the Spotlight pane.
Click on the Privacy tab or button.
There should be an ADD button, click that and add whatever volume(s) you've assign as FCP capture/scratch discs.
That will keep Spotlight from trying to index files as you capture footage which is the root cause of capture problems when using a non-recommended version of FCP with OS 10.4.9.

  • Problems capturing onto an external harddrive

I just got a new Lacie Brick external harddrive, and looking around these forums, it seems that was a bad choice. I have no problem capturing footage right onto my computer, but when I try to capture onto the Lacie then Finalcut freezes and won't shut down. Is there any way to fix this or should I just get a different harddrive?

    > However, it
can be used as a back up drive....
    And an excellent one too!
There's a lot of rubbish talked about LaCie external hard drives - my "Big Disk" 500 GB unit has worked hard, flawlessly for a year or so now.
Unfortunately (maybe because they're small) hard drives get moved around and abused during use. If they aren't fan cooled, they can overheat if there isn't free air space (and common sense) around them.
Moving an external HD while it's working is a pretty sure way to wreck it - and so is allowing it to get too hot.
Use your brick - it's a pity it isn't Firewire but it will still be a valuable asset to you for backup as X said.
