HV20 footage

Hi, well I shot a short using a HV20, with HD 24p. I have Final Cut Express 4 and the option of getting Final Cut Studio 2.
My goal is to export the edited video to tape, in standard definition and also to make a standard definition dvd in 24 p. The tape is going to be transferred to a standard dvd in the end.
Should I de-interlace or not? How should I work regarding HD and SD? Should I downconvert first or at the end? General workflow for FCP, please... I'm kind of lost here. Well, really lost.
THANK YOU!!!

If you haven't captured yet, check this article out. http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/capture_hdv_prores_fwbalis.html It starts at KEn Stone's sight and continues at the moviola site. There's a link to some easy setups to import footage as ProRes.
If you have already captured, this article http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hdv_timeline_to_sddvd.html shows how you can export HDV as ProRes for compressing in Compressor. I imagine that the process would be the same.
If you read over the PROS and CONS of capturing as ProRes (the first link), you'll understand a little better I think.
IF you need a BitBudget to determine your Compressor settings, I use this one: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/bitbudget.html There's others out there, but I have always gotten excellent results with this one. You enter in the total minutes of audio and video and get a average and max bitrate.
Using the above methods, I've gotten great looking SD DVDs. Good luck!

  • Importing HV20 24P footage

I imported 12 hours of 24P footage from the HV20 into Final Cut using the HDV 108024P preset before reading the instructions of how to make it "true 24P" that say that the footage needs to be imported as "HDV108060i".
Do I need to reimport all that footage to do the steps needed to make it real 24P?
Also, if I did not change it to real 24P and added it to a timeline that was 24P with A1 footage would the two look the same or would the HV20 footage have some issues?

    Hello,
When you say imported, do you mean imported from a file, or captured from the tape?
When you say 24p footage, have you already done the reverse telecine process on it?
The camera shoots 24p, but stores it as 60i on the tape. When you capture, you end up with 60i data, with duplicate frames on a cadence (you can check this just by stepping through your video frame by frame and watch for duplicates)
You can take captured 24p video (which is contained in a 60i format) then use compressor to remove the extra frames. Then you can then place that clip in a 24p sequence and edit as you wish.
I would guess that when you say you "imported" 24p, you mean that you captured the HDV from the hv20 something you shot in 24p mode. FCP would have captured it as 60i video, so you probably don't need to re-capture it. Just place the entire capture onto a sequence, accept the format of the input, then send it to compressor to change (reverse telecine, aka removing the extra frames) the 60i sequence into a true 24p sequence. then you use this true 24p material in a new sequence that you can then trim and edit.

  • HELP! Canon HV20 vs Panasonic NV GS320?

I've been looking at both of these camcorders and I am uncertain as which is a better buy. I know that the Canon has additional features including CMOS as apposed to 3ccd in the Panasonic. The Panasonic shot still pics at 3.1 while the Canon shoots at 2.96. Also, the Canon is High Def while the Panasonic is not. One of the concerns I have with the Canon is the comment someone made at CNET was "About 20 minutes of my raw HD footage was 17.13 GB. Yes, you read that right, GIGABYTES. I've compressed most of my footage to distribute to family, but intend on saving the tapes since the file sizes are so big. So here I am...not sure which is a better buy....the Canon at around 800 or 450 for the Panasonic. HELP!

the HV20 is no doubt the better choice!
the HV20 can record SD and thus be as space consious as the Pana
the HV20 is the best HD quality you can get below 2000 USD
the HV20 has the same quality photos as with an EOS 350. YES i compared...
the HV20 footage imported in iMovie takes the same amount diskspace as pana; why? Imovie converts everything to Apple Intermediate Coded... You will loose the top HD quality; but you will have the tape if you plan to use better software/hardware in the future
    more reasons?

  • Hv20 and Xha1 timeline

So I have a timeline with 1440by1080 23.98 Xh-A1 footage. My second camera was the HV20. I exported the HV20 footage to compressor to transcode to ProRes22 and changed it to 24 fps and selected reverse telecine.
(I did this since the HV20 footage is captured at 29.97 interlaced by FCP, and since it needs to be 24 fps and progressive to edit on the same timeline with progressive footage from the Xh-
    A1)
When I put them on the timeline together, the audio from the HV20 goes off track like 10 minutes after the sequence starts. Is this because the Xh-A1 is 23.98 and the HV20 is 24 fps? Do I need to "write-in" 23.976 in the ProRes settings in Compressor when transcoding?

So it's fixed. Having one camera with 23.976 and one with 24 throws off the audio eventually. In compressor, choosing 23.976 for the HV20 footage was crucial if the other cams footage is 23.976. 24 is no good.

  • Importing HDV Footage: System Hang After Indexing Finished

    Running Premiere CS6 with updates.
Generally solid application, but the first time I crashed it this year, was during import of HDV footage. After the footage indexes, and the thumbnail pic changes from 'media pending' to the actual footage frame, the mouse pointer freezes. The keyboard is frozen too. Can't even bring up the Task Manager in Windows 7 64. Is HDV even supported anymore? Maybe it's an invalid format? The file plays fine in VLC, so I don't think it's corrupted. But egads, I've never seen an app hang Windows 7 before!

I've confirmed that the hang does not happen with Canon HV20 footage, only Sony HVR-V1U footage. Any footage shot by that camera will hang not only Premiere, but the entire OS. I have to power down the machine to regain control.
What's so different about Sony's implementation of HDV that it is incompatible with Premiere?

  • Issues importing HDV footage

I have a canon HV20 and it seems like FCP6 has been super picky on HDV imports.
The footage I am trying to import was on new tapes and there were no stops in the tape.
Everytime I go to import them there is always a part or two that gets splitup and drops a few seconds.
So to fix this I have to go back and try in reimport the lost area. I am using Firewire basic and standard HDV import settings. This is getting very frustrating I never had so many issues with importing.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Will this work? 24 mix with HVX

I want to shoot 720 24pn on the HVX
Than work on a 24 fps timeline using the
    HV20-

DVX- F6 ADV Mode for pulldown
Just need to know if this is a usable set up. Or should I skip it and shoot 60 across the board and not deal with a pulldown.
    Thanks

If you are going to mix HDV and DVCPRO HD, you'd really be better off getting a capture card and capturing the HV20 footage as DVCPRO HD right off oft he camera. Decklink has the HD Extreme for only $1000, and it can do this for you.
Because that little article shows you how to get 24p off of that camera from a 29.97 stream...it says NOTHING about getting it out of HDV and into DVCPRO HD.
Or are you hoping that the FCP 6 mixed timeline will work for this?
    TEST TEST TEST!!!
The only way to know if things work. TEST before you commit.

  • Why is encore burning everything to 720 x 480

Everytime I burn a blu-ray disc my TV shows that it is 720 X 480.  I am using a PS3 to play it back.  The short consists of 1440 x 1080 HV20 footage and 1920 x1080 AE and 3DS Max renders and various mpeg, mp3, m4a and wav audio files.  I have exported out of premiere at 1920 x 1080 and then used encore to build a blu-ray disc from this imported, transcoded file.  I have dynamically linked to encore from premier pro and built it this way.  I'm selecting the appropriate blu-ray options.  Does anyone have any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

I'm checking this.  I get a message that windows can't read the bd.

  • Canon HV20 and HDV footage

    Hello All,
I recently purchased a Canon HV20, but have only recorded and edited in SD DV.
Today I was reading a clip on the internet that gave me a bit of a surprised. Here is a part of the clip,
[This article was first published in the Sept/Oct, 2007, issue of
    Larry's Final Cut Pro Newsletter.]
    First, Allan Tépper writes:
I am writing to offer help for Justin Ascott's 24p workflow with the Canon HV20. The 24p recording of the Canon HV20 has much in common with the 24p recording of the Sony HVR-V1.
To answer Justin Ascott specifically: The FCP Easy Setup called HDV-1080/24p will not work with 24p footage from the HV20 or the Sony V1. "
Has anyone here had any experience with FCE and capturing HDV footage from a Canon HV20? Is the statement above true?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

I wonder why my PAL one doesn't do 24p?
Normal HDV will work perfectly with FCE except it will have to be converted into the Apple Intermediate Codec.
The Easy Setup is "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60".
I don't think shooting in HDV and then converting to SD DV will look any better than normal SD but you will have the HDV master tape which can be used to produce Blu-ray DVDs at a later date when they become cheaper and more popular.
An hour of AIC will take around 40 GB of HD space.
As with everything it is worth doing quick tests involving something unimportant to determine which workflow suits you. Use DVD-RWs when testing to avoid waste.
Remember that you can export your HDV edited project back to tape in your camera and connect it to an HD TV for high definition playback.
I am not too keen on this because of the extra wear it puts on the camera and tape.

  • Canon HV20 imports footage as a single clip

I have a Canon HV20 and am trying to import my footage as separate clips based on when I pressed the record / pause button. Currently, when I import the footage automatically the footage is imported as a single clip and therefore one large .MOV file. From what I've read and heard, it's supposed to create a new clip for every start / stop on the tape. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I've only tried it on Auto. I'll have to give it a show in Manual. Is this to say you have to manually start and stop the import to create different clips? or is putting it in Manual mode a way to get it to recognize the timecode breaks?
Also, I'm capturing the full frame of 1920 x 1080 (if that helps).
    Thanks.

  • FCP 5.0.1 ingest of 24f footage from Canon Xh-A1

Hi: I am working with a Power Mac G5 running FCP 5.0.1 and Tiger 10.4.1
I have been given a mini dv tape by a client and they don't know any of the specifications about how the footage was shot. All they know is that is was shot using a Canon Xh-A1 in HDV. I am trying to import this footage into FCP 5.0.1 using my Sony Z1 and I'm having some problems.
    1. Will the Sony Z1 play back a tape that was shot with this canon camera? When I try to play back the tape using my Z1 I get no image, and the client swears the tape is not blank because he has seen it. I am thinking the shooter was shooting in 24f mode and my Z1 will not play that.
    2. Is there any way I can even edit 24f footage in FCP 5.0.1? And if so, what should the preset be?
    3. For the ingest of the footage I guess I could rent a Xh-A1, but was wondering if a HV20 could do the job?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Nope...If it was shot 24f then only a Canon camera with that option will play it back. It is a format SPECIFIC to Canon. Sony won't play it back. Sony will play back Canon tapes, if you shoot 1080i60...that format they share. But their 24f/24p formats...non-interchangable. You'll have to borrow the clients camera to capture.

  • PE7 unable to recognize Canon HV20 as High Definition

    Hello Everyone:
Unfortunately like some of you that probably want to try your hand at high definition editing, I just bought PE7 a couple of days before the announcement for PE8. For some reason I find that PE7 (and my previous PE3) cannot recognize my Canon HV20 as the high definition camera that it is.
I can easily import regular dv-avi from this Canon but when trying to import the files as HDV, it does not recognize the camera.
The camera is connected via firewire and is recognized as 'DV' Camcorder but not as an 'HDV' camcorder. The footage has been recorded in High defintion 1080.
I hope that one of you with this type of camera can help.
On another note, is it possible to record into PE7 with HDMI?
    Thanks,
    Lucio

    Lucio,
Perhaps a different capture card is needed or Vista Ultimate (instead of the Home Premium that I have).
A FireWire connection should be all that you will need. No "capture card" would be involved.
There don't seem to be many setting available for transferring beside an 'AV-DV' on-off (which I keep on).
Because my Canon is an SD-only unit, I can't really check its manual to help you. This line puzzles me a bit. What happens if you set this to OFF? Considering the number of menu options and switches that I have on my SD camera, I'd have expected your HD/SD unit to have more possible settings, but maybe I'm wrong and Canon has simplified things a lot.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Imovie cant import HD footage.

I bought a HV20 canon camcorder. iMovie cant even detect a camera conected when I shot in HD mode. Only Standard mode can import without problems. Also, when I create a new proyect, the HDV 1080i and HDV 720p format options appears disabled (grey color). Why is it so? Does it have any relation with the HD importing problem? Why are this two format options disbled? Is it because I am using the Built-in iMovie version, the one that comes when you buy the iMac? I dont think so. Is it going to be the same if I buy the full version iMovie 6? Do I really have to? Or the real problem starts in the way I shoot my footage? How can I get the best quality from my HD camera?

    Welcome to discussions, cyn23
As far as why your camera isn't recognized in the HD format-I have no idea what the problem is.
However, just to be clear, the version of imovie that came pre-installed on your Mac is the very same version that comes when you purchase iLife 6 as a bundle.
There is no other 'full' version.

  • Which? CS3 or Elements for HV20 24p work?

    Hello:
I am an ELements user and I was made an offer to upgrade to Pro CS3 for $299. Will this upgrade buy me anything?
I have a Canon HV20 and the big pain is the 24p workflow. Does Pro CS3 offer any improvement over pulldown? I can see various 24p related options in Elments (grayed out and disabled of course) so it leads me to think that maybe working with this footage is easier.
    Advice needed!
    peace|dewde

    > I have a Canon HV20 and the big pain is the 24p workflow.
Whatever you decide, keep in mind that HDV is a delivery format. Editing is
often easier when editing in a (drum roll please) editing format.

  • PC Recognizes HV20 but no frames are captured in Premiere CS5? (Or HDVSplit)

    Hi there.
Recently upgraded my laptop to a nice Sager NP8130 as a mobile editing workstation, and when I went to begin capturing HDV footage the other day, I wasn't able to!
My PC detects the camera (Canon HV20) fine, it shows up in device manager as functioning. In Adobe Premiere CS5, and HDVSplit I can use the playback controls to shuttle the tape around, and I even get timecode feedback correctly on the PC.
But no matter what, I can't get any dang video to capture!
Camera and cable are definitely working fine; I dug out my old laptop and captured the footage I needed with no problem.
If anyone has any ideas, or any experience with this error, I would dearly appreciate any input,
    Thanks!

Unfortunately, with no success, I also tried that method of switching to the Legacy firewire driver, as it used to be a common suggestion back in the vista days.
