HVR A1U

My name is Brian and I am an intern with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Oklahoma. We are doing a population survey of the Ozark big-eared bat using infrared cameras and lights. We are using the HVR A1U with external lighting to video the bats flying out. I am looking for a way to unlock the nightshot settings. I am willing to verify who I am and what this is for. I need some contact information on who can help me from Sony or any other ideas. I have contacted the customer service department with no luck, they didn't know who I needed to talk to. Unlocking the frames per second is key to this project so I can have a clear picture when I slow the video down during analysis. Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Problem Capturing from Sony HVR-A1U to FCP 5 using HDV preset

    Hi,
i just got a Sony HVR-A1U and am new to HDV. I am a professional editor so i have a full understanding of FCP. Here are my problems and questions.
Specs of system : Power Mac Dual 2Ghz G5, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200 64mb (Do i need a better GFX card?)
    1) When i setup the project settings at the start I selected HDV 1080i/60, it automatically states "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding Hardware card." I am quite sure that i have all the codecs i could have without having a hardware card, since i don't have a hardware card. Does this mean that i need a blackmagic HD card or a Kona card just to process the HD into FCP as HDV 1060i/60 even though it is through firewire?
    2) I advanced to the Log & Capture mode with the HDV settings, set properly across the board. I can not see picture, can hear audio and can log clips. When i capture it captures black for video but captures the audio just fine. I figure this is because of the missing codec which encodes HDV for FCP from Sony's HDV encoding?
    3) I can capture on the fly with the Apple Intermediate Codec, no Log and Capture screen comes up, just a dialogue box that asks me to name the clip. I understand what this codec is and find that i am stuck at the moment using this until I find a way to capture the other way. Is there anyway to have the Log and Capture screen launch using this codec?
    4) I can not have pre-logged clips using other methods and then batch capture them using the Apple Intermediate Codec, it just reverts to capturing on the fly. Anyway to Batch Capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec?
Funny thing is that i can digitize fine in iMovie HD although i don't know what codec it is using. This totally baffles me that it works in a certain manner, i can get the job done, but not the way i should be able to. I've been using FCP since '99 and have never encountered something in this manner. And since this is my first experience with FCP and HDV i have nowhere to go from here except get some help or settle for what i can do and change my normal post-production workflow.
A question i really want to know about is whether i need an extra hardware compnent, i know i asked that question above, and i could understand if i did. (i.e GFX card or Capture card - even though i am going through firewire)?
I appreciate any help, i might not respond over the next couple of weeks because i am shooting in Europe and will be back stateside at the start of February, so i will not be active on this post until then. Any input would be great and when i get back i will have loads of footage that i will need to digitize, so i will be very open to help with troubleshooting as well.
    Thanks again!!!

All the settings are proper, like i said, it captures with the apple codec for HDV but that is only good for on the fly. iMovie captures it fine, it's just when the settings in FCP are set for HDV it won't capture picture through log and capture.
Are you guys actually reading my post??? I have given all the information that i can, settings are proper, so the post so far are completely redundant.

  • Sony hvr-a1u connection to macbook

Has anyone actually connect it up via firewire? I have trial and errored it to death to get it to connect. Anyone have the settings of the camera to help me out?
    Thanks

Also learned that iDVD doesn't burn in HD so what is the point of shooting HD when my DVD's will not be HD.  Is this also true.
your device has TWO modi: HDV and DV ... HDV=HDef, DV=SDef .. FCE is right, ignoring a DV-shot to import as HDef ...
DVDs are by standards SDef only... iDVD supports 'only' standards.
disks with HDef are BluRay - additional burner, additional software.
consider a 'Mediaplayer' for playback instead of disks.

  • Capture video from camera (Sony HVR-A1U) to Premier -Premier Crashes

I have Firewire connected between the video camera and my mac. Usually I capture my clips easily - they are shot on mini HDV tape. But today it causes the whole program to freeze and I have to Force Quit. The camera is on and connections on before I go into Capture.
When I begin to play the video before hitting Record -Premier stalls and a message "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Pro to shut down. We will attempt to save your project".
I am starting a new project, but even in a previous project it crashes. What is the problem? Is there any other way to access the video without using Premier while I resolve the issue.

All the settings are proper, like i said, it captures with the apple codec for HDV but that is only good for on the fly. iMovie captures it fine, it's just when the settings in FCP are set for HDV it won't capture picture through log and capture.

  • My Sony HVR-A1U and Final Cut Express HD 3.5

I just recently purchased both of these products and I am having the hardest time trying to get the captures to last longer than five seconds without the picture being dropped because of the frame rate or something at the bottom that says that it can't keep up with the speed or something? I have set the Easy Setup to do it at 1080i NTSC and other things but I am just lost. I own a MacBook but I saw in another thread that the MacBook compatibility isn't the problem. HELP?!?!?!?

Try Small Dog and see what they're going for. Prices keep changing. Size keep going up. See what you need and what you can afford.
Apple doesn't support the use of USB for video applications. It may work. You could try it, but don't be surprised if it doesn't, especially as the drive begins to fill up. May work in the beginning when the drive is empty and fast.

  • I have a Sony HVR-V1P, can i successfully capture and edit with Final Cut Pro X

I have a Sony HVR-V1P, can i successfully capture and edit with Final Cut Pro X

My HVR-A1U was able to capture just fine.  The only issue I had is that it has mroe frequently than FCP 7 ever did find Timecode breaks and split my clip apart.  I never had breaks before, so while it is possible I had them on this latest tape, I think X is just more picky.  I mean heck, it found three in a one minute timeframe.  My A1U worked with X without me needing to adjsut any settings form how I had it setup for 7.

  • Problem with Print to Video in FCP 6.0

In the past I have been able to print to video with FCP 5, now not working with FCP 6. My Sony HVR A1U is seen by FCP, I can log & capture no problem. When I go to print to video, the sequence does not show up on my camera LCD and I cannot capture it. I have checked the system profiler and under firewire the camera is listed. In the print to video window I have checked Automatically Start Recording, but this has no effect.
    Thank you for your advice

Just curious. How do you get your computer too see the HVR. I am using I movie HD and it does not see anything. Is there a camera setup procedure? I looked at the vague manual which was no help.
    Thanks in Advance

  • New to Adobe  Please evaluate my build

Hi there. I have been lurking for the past week and thought I would get some advice. I have learned a ton just by reading the guidance section by Harm. Good stuff. Answered a lot of questions. I would appreciate it if you guys would look over my current set up and provide me with some feed back on what to improve first and what to change. I am new to using Adobe and have really only been doing video work for about a year. I built my own PC (one of many) and run a small yet busy PC repair/ Video editing service at home while still working a full time job. I just purchased CS5 and have had a pretty steep learning curve. Now I am begining to understand enough of what I am doing to know that my machine could probably use some help in its set up. Its main purpase in life was to "play Crysis' until now. Now it must work. Gaming is all but done and relegated to a second machine. So after that long introduction here are my specs and what I am doing on it.
    CPU-i7 930 @3.8Ghz
    MOBO- EVGA SLI LE
    RAM- 6GB Corsair Domintator 1600
    GPU- 2 GTX 260s SLI 216 cores
    OS - (2) WD 74GB Raptors Raid 0
Media (personal)  WD 750GB black - Soon to be replaced by something larger This drive has been a huge disapointment. SLOW.
Project files and everthing else WD 2TB green drive ( I know, no green drives but I got it for $70)
    PSU-Corsair 750TX
Case - full tower Lian Li
    4 LITE ON DVD burners
I am working with large amounts of HD content shot on this- Sony HVR-A1U.I edit the footage then author it to DVD's.
What should I upgrade/change first? I am already planning on a second 6GB kit and another 2TB drive. Thank you all in advance for your help.

    >GPU- 2 GTX 260s SLI 216 cores
PPro does not do dual-GPU SLI and those cards are not supported for hardware MPE/Cuda anyway
For a list of supported nVidia CUDA cards go to the FAQ
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_current/cs5_faq_sheet
For others, the nVidia Hack http://forums.adobe.com/thread/629557?tstart=0
    >RAM- 6GB Corsair Domintator 1600
Go to the http://ppbm5.com/ site and then the benchmark results... from what I have read in these messages, there is about a 30% performance improvement by going from 6Gig to 12Gig
    >PSU-Corsair 750TX
There is a link to the computer I built in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652694?tstart=0 - with fewer total drives an an 850w power supply... I think you may need a larger power supply

  • Using Macbook Pro to do HD video editing?

    Hi all,
I recently purchased Sony's HDR-HC1 high-definition camcorder, and I found out my current computer is way too slow for HD video editing. I want to purchase a brand Mac to get the job done. I am wondering if the Macbook Pro is powerful enough? Anyone has any experience editing HD video footage on Macbook Pro?

Yes it is. I have the HC1's bigger brother the prosumer HVR-A1U and I just received my universal final cut studio yesterday and just played a little, but yes it can. I have the 17" MBP and have both played high def. H.264 quicktime movies on it and have also imported some HDV content and that too plays fine. The only problem I have is that I went with the 7200 RPM drive so that I can edit on the go with just my laptop, but between the system software, and my document from my current machine, I was down to barely any space available. What I'm gonna do now is keep my old machine and the documents on that, and so I can keep the majority of my HDD open for video editing.

  • Capture Problems

I am capturing footage from a Sony HVR-A1u to final cut express via firewire. Recently my captured footage is corrupt and plays green with overmodualted sound!! ANy ideas to fix this problem please let me know at [email protected]

thanks for responding to my ?, my employeer only purchased 5 tapes so i have had to record over them. Old clips already captured and saved onto a hard drive are fine. Also the footage plays back fine in the camera. everything was working fine originally but now it is becoming almost intollerable. i contacted Apple and they told me to reinstall quicktime, which I did and that did not fix the problem. The tapes I am using are Sony HDV DV CAM. Do you think the problem is b/c of taping over old footage. Finally Apple told me the HVR-A1U is not registered as a working tested camera and if the problem continues we are out of luck any ideas on what could be done. Much appreciated.

  • Final Cut Exp - Working with HDV format & exporting for web in 16:9 format

I'm working with SONY HVR-A1U prosumer camcorder which captures footage in 1440x1080resolution. My goal is to produce movies fro web in 16:9 size and upload them on "Brightcove" website
After editing this footage in Final Cut Express I'm trying now to export my movie using "File-Export-Using Quick Time Conversion" option ... and I ran into the big issue with video size settings and how the video gets squezed when uploaded on Brightcove website.
To get 16:9 size out of FCE, I need to:
Set the "custom" size 640x360 and set "preserve aspect ration" - use letter box
Then the resulting movie plays as 16:9 in Quicktime ... however after uploading it on Brightcove it chages the aspect again ... and becomes squashed.
I would appreciate any advice how to overcome this "squashing" of export when working with HDV footage.
    Thanks
    Peter

  • JUST GOT FINAL CUT STUDIO (UPGRADE) in the mail!!!

Hi Forum! Long time no chat. I send off my FCP 4 Disk to Apple and just got the new FCP Studio disks in the mail! Whooo hoooo!
SO, question, I've read a lot of horror stories by people installing this and having thier "perfect FCP 4 System" lock up on them...
Is there a link I can go to for "proper preparation" of my current FCP set up (saving a back up, etc.) in order to insure a "perfect install" the first time?
ALSO: I just picked up a nifty little Sony HVR-A1U HD1080i camera...and was wondering a bit on "Capture Cards"....I am going to attend a Larry Jordan Seminar next week in Boston, certainly going to learn about that...but wanted to do some research on options/pricing before I go...
Thanks forum! Just FYI...great forum! I've learned a lot from you guys...projects as of late have come out "picture perfect"

No experience with the firestore - is there a HDV model now ? - seems like an additional complication (what if it runs out of charge / space etc.)
I record once to a tape, rewind it and capture it in one go when its full - no timecode shuttling (which does not seem to work very well from HDV footage anyway) so I don't think drive wear is that excessive. Once its on hard drive, I use it from there. I will put an edited 'master' back to a fresh tape.
Personally, I would get a second camera instead of a deck, one that offers something different from the one I have, but is tape compatible, so the HC3 for example to go with the A1 - you may have different requirements. (In my case, I might get a A1 to go with the Z1).
Pro's would go with a separate deck, of course, and I'm not suggesting you don't.

  • Best Camera for Documentary work?

Hello, I am looking for a camera to make a documentary. I have looked at the Canon 70D while using a zoom capture device for sound. I recently looking at the Canon XA25, would this be better? And do I need to use an external capture device for sound?
I wanted something that can take stills but am willing to let this go for superior video quality and better sound. As it stands I have a budget of around £3500 to buy a camera, audio equipment and everything else (batteries, memory).
    thanks, Tom!

I would guess that most of our elitists (humor here :)) would say that mini-DV is crap and HDV is just a larger form of said crap due to the high compression needed to get all that HDV data onto a mini-DV tape.
Having said that, I soley use an HDV cam (Sony HVR-A1U). I always shoot HDV and in cam downconvert when capturing into FCP.
If I had had the money and transport (inconspicuous travel) wasn't my thing, I would have gone with that Panasonic P2 one (can't remember the name) or another true HD cam.
But, I'm extremely happy with my choice. When the money is there I'll add the HD cam and use my A1 as a second an my travel cam.

  • Best camera for compositing

I don't know if that's the best place to ask this but anyway ... I'm considering buying a HD camera for some short-movies and other minor projects but since I'm also interested in studying Shake, I'd like to know which specification I should take a closer look at for maximum results when doing compositing/etc ? Or in other words which of these specs are more important for compositing work ?
Color spacing ? (DVCPRO HD's 4:2:2 vs HDV's 4:2:0) ? High resolution (XLH-1 and JVC HD100's high res vs HVX200's lower res) ? Sharpness ? Progressive chip ? And how do you compare (for compositing purposes only) these flavors of HD with Super 16mm shot on a pin-registered camera using a sharp lens and Spirit datacine ?
(I mentioned these codecs before but my idea is to move to uncompressed for this kind of work)
    Appreciate any help.

  • Setting up your system

    Hey guys,
Been using Premiere Pro CS5 since it came out but I've run into a problem.  I purchased a Sony HVR-A1U and I'm trying to capture footage by connecting DV/HDV to 9-pin firewire and I also have a G-RAID Drive that has 9 to 9-pin firewire running to the iMac (only one 9-pin port on iMac)  I can't seem to find a multiple 9-pin hub or port device to connect multiple 9-pin firewire.  Temporarily I'm having to unplug my external drive, create the project and cache files and dump footage on a USB drive, then plug G-RAID back in and copy files over... it's absolutely an efficiency killer.  Any workaround for plugging both G-RAID and camera in at same time with 9-pin firewire.
    -Thanks guys

Your right JEShort01.  The G-RAID does have 2 9-pin connections but I tried to plug Sony into G-Raid and then G-Raid to iMac the Capture Format in Premiere will not read footage.  It seems as though the camera has to be directly plugged into the iMac for it to recognize the device. I need a 2 to 1 9-pin connection but the only thing I've found is capture card devices that are expensive.  Thanks and if you have another route please let me know!
