HVR-V1U Compatibility with PDVM40N DVCAM tapes

Hello,
We have a user that is probably going to upgrade from an ailing DSR-PD100A that uses PDVM40N tapes to a HVRV1U that uses PDVM41N/3 tapes.
He would like to know whether or not he will be able to play the PDVM40N tapes in the new HVRV1U unit.
On the consumer site it states that the HVRV1U will record to "HDV/DVCAM/DV (SP)" format and on the pro site it lists the following as the media types: PDVM32N/3, PHDVM63DM, and PDVM41N/3.
The PDVM40N and PDVM41N/3 are similar in name, but I am hesitant to tell the user that, "Yes your new $4,000 camera will run your old tapes."
If anyone has any knowledge or other sites to check it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

  • No video when trying to capture PAL dv tape w/Sony HVR-V1U camera

    Hello there,
Im attempting to Log & Capture a DV tape with "DV SP PAL" content from a Sony HVR-V1U camera using an iLink FireWire.
I have deck control, timecode, and audio but no video. Instead I see bars for video w/the ominous "preview disabled" band. When I attempt "Capture Now," I receive the follwoing message "this operation could not be completed as there is no video." For Easy Setup, Im currently in "Format: PAL; Use: DV-PAL FireWire Basic" (ive other combinations, and again best I can get is deck control but no video).
The DV PAL tape plays fine in the camera's LCD screen. Also I had no issue capturing HDV NTSC tapes using the same Sony HVR-V1U camera.
I've checked my settings and the usual obvious stuff but no luck.
If anyone has any ideas on what Im doing wrong or things I could try it would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks,
    Sam

are you sure this camera is fully pal compatible?  Some cameras/decks will play back certain formats but will not output via firewire.  Can you shoot PAL with this camera?  If not, I'd guess you can't use it to capture PAL via firewire.  Might check the camera manual.

  • How to export to DVCAM tape with timecode from Premiere CS 6?

I am having a lot of trouble with this. I need to give a dvcam tape with proper timecode to a television station for a Show I edit. I am editing for this station for last 7 years. Before they accepeted betacam, but now they changed to DVCAM. I have Premiere Pro 6 (or CC) and SONY HVR M15U deck. I connected it via firewire, then realized firewire can't export timecode. Now I am in a pickle.
    Possible solutions (may be):
    - Buy a card, send other signal like SDI to the deck?
    - Buy new deck?
Please help. I able to print to tape via firewire, but how can I print the timecode?
    Thanks
    Raman

    realized firewire can't export timecode.
    Sure it can.

  • Is FCP X compatible with a Sony HVR-V1U camcorder?

I used the camcorder compatibility query tool but did not see the HVR-V1U or V1N listed.

Thanks, Ben.  That is indeed the plan.  I was just fishing to see if anyone had actually captured from an HVR-V1U or N into FCPX.  Agree that it SHOULD . . . a Firewire connection from tape media is a standard thing.  But I never cease to be amazed at technical surprises.

  • FCP 6 and Sony HVR-V1U 24p; can't remove 3:2 pulldown or convert to 24 fps

Hi, all, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I recently purchased a Sony HVR-V1U HD camera that has a native 24p setting (using 60i with 3:2 pulldown to store on miniDV tape).
I have just started experimenting with pulling footage off this camera into Final Cut Pro (6.0.3), and am having some problems getting things to work using log-and-capture. Specifically, it seems I can either choose the ProRes 422 setting and effectively use a "capture now" capturing method--which gets me native 24 (or 23.98 if 24pa is used) frames per second--or I can use the 60i setup--which gets me the standard log-and-capture window where I can actually log my clips, but brings them in at 29.97 fps.
I would make due with the 60i setting since that allows me to batch capture clips I want from my footage... however, I am not able to alter the frame rate or remove the 3:2 pulldown using cinema tools (I get a "unable to find clips with 29.97 fps" error, when the properties clearly list the clips as having 29.97 fps).
Can anyone help here? I'm quite accustomed to using the log and capture window so the "capture now" method seems very inconvenient; but if I can't get the clips transcoded to 24fps somehow I'm not sure what else I can do.
    Thanks in advance!
    John

Capturing HDV uses a somewhat different workflow than regular DV and other I Frame formats (if that is what you have been used to so far).

  • Canon 30i footage not being read by sony HVR V1U

    Hello out there,
So I have a whack of tapes to import, shot using the Canon XLH1- I'm not sure if they were recorded at 30F or 60i
However, I can't seem to find the correct 'tape format' on the HVR V1U to play them back.
    Anyone run into this problem?
I wanted to bring in the footage using the Sony but I can't even play back the tapes.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much,
    Deedee

I believe the incompatibility between Canon and Sony may be a tracking issue and here's why. A couple of weeks ago I was able to capture HDV footage shot on a client's XL-H1, using my Sony HVR V1U. Last year that same client had unsuccessfully tried to capture using an HVR-M10U VTR. We wound up using the H1 to capture. Later in the year I borrowed his H1 to shoot some pickups in Standard Definition DV. When I tried to playback on my DSR-1500 there were picture and sound errors. The same tape played in a DSR-11 exhibited even more errors. I was able to playback and capture from on the H1 with no problems. I suggested that he send the H1 back to Canon for warranty repair. He did and the problem was in either the tape or head drum speed, I can't remember which. It seems quite reasonable that other H1's may exhibit the same recording issue. I suggest you try to record in DV and see if the V1U or some other DV deck will play it back.

  • Verifying Shooting Parameters on DVCAM tape

I am capturing DV-NTSC footage into FCP 6 from Mini-DV tapes playing in a SONY DVCAM DSR-V10 clamshell deck. The camera was a SONY HVR-Z1U.
Some of these tapes, God help me, seem to have been shot with the camera set on 48K 16-bit audio and others at 32K 12 bit. The tapes are not marked as to which.
Is there a way of knowing what the audio settings were for a given tape BEFORE logging and digitizing? Can I tell while the tape is in the deck?
    Thanks.

    Bogiesan,
Thanks for your idea. We evidently don't have the remote to our clamshell deck, but the display on the screen as the tape plays (though not when it is in stop mode) gives the sample rate at the bottom right.
However -- and excuse me for being such a moron -- I don't know whether this "48K" at the bottom of the deck means that (a) the deck is set to play at 48K; (b) the deck is set to record at 48K; or (c) the tape that is playing was shot at 48K. Do you know?
Also, I went into menu settings, and I saw under Audio Mode the choices "FS32K" and "FS48K." The deck, interestingly enough, was handed to me set at FS32K. But I am thinking this refers not to the way the deck OUTPUTS but to the rate at which it RECORDS.
Obviously I am trying to track down where 32K has entered the picture -- when the camera shot the video/audio; when the deck output it; or when FCP captured it.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Firewire Output with TC to Tape Options?

    Hello,
I am outputting a show for cable broadcast on Discovery Science and want to know what my options are for decks that I can output the show with sequence timecode to via Firewire 400 or 800. So far, my understanding is that this is not possible with DigiBeta, but is with DVCPro50 or DVCProHD. Are there better options? Thanks.

What is Discovery Sciences delivery requirements? No doubt Digibeta. So giving them a DVCAM tape isn't the answer. You are going to need to get a capture card, color correction monitor (they WILL kick it back if it isn't properly color corrected) and rent a digibeta deck.
The thing is, you need the additional equipment...especially if you are going to broadcast. Sure you could output to DVCAM tape (after you properly format the show) with arbituary TC and tell the dub house that you need the Bars & Tone to start at 58:30:00 when you dub to digibeta, but then you are trusting that they will do this.
Wait...what format did you shoot and edit? And does Discovery Science require the odd formatting of 15-45 pads of black after each act so that your Act Break starts on the 00 frame? (I edit for Discovery Channel and National Geographic all the time)

  • True 24fps Film Project out to DVCam Tape - Proper Settings?

I have a TRUE 24fps 1080x1920 Uncompressed Quicktime of my film.  I'm  going to be using Premiere Pro CS5 connected via Firewire to a Sony  HVR-Z1U Camcorder, which is capable of DVCAM recording and playback.  I  need to record the film to DVCAM tape for a film festival....and I was wondering 2 things:
    1.  What framerate is needed for DVCam?  I'm guessing I will need to convert the film to 23.976 before outputing it to tape....
    2.  If I need to convert to a 23.976 file beforehand....what is the best  quality file for output to DVCam?  The best way I know of currently to  convert my true 24p footage to 23.976 is by going into After Effects and  converting to MPEG2...setting the M-Frame to 3 and the N-Frame to 12 so  I avoid conversion flicker problems....but I know MPEG2 will probably  be pretty lossy compared to other file formats that DVCam tapes can  handle.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Doron Kipper

DV and DVCAM are effectively the same, 720 x 480 NTSC or 720 x 576 PAL and the framerate is 60i or 50i. Assuming NTSC you need to rewrap to 60i using MS DV AVI.

  • Print hdv sequence to dvcam tape

I've never tried it, but can you print a hdv sequnce to a dvcam tape?
I've had a look at the forum and a few people mention using compressor, but I have fce 4 which hasn't got compressor.
Does anyone have any experince doing this in fce 4?
    Thanks.

Do you have a DVCAM camera or deck? Do not do this with copy and paste. Take your edited HD sequence and place it inside a DV anamorphic sequence to scale it properly and correct the pixel aspect ratio. Before you do that make the the HD sequence is fully rendered and mixed down. Then once inside the DV anamorphic sequence, render and mix down that, then print to video.

  • DVCAM tapes

So I've been asked by my church to create a DVD of a Dance Festival that will be digitally recorded by a professional service, they will be recording on DVCAM tapes, the larger ones.
I have found that a DVCAM player costs around 7000 dollars.
Any recommendations on how I can capture this video? Are there resources that would allow me to rent equipment of this nature or perhaps go to a studio and utilize some equipment?
Has anyone here had experience using DVCAM?
    Thanks

You can usually find a rental house that offers DVCam VTRs. Or you could pay the same people that are taping the event to capture the material to a FW hard drive that you provide. Or check with production/post-production companies in your area to see if they can do it for you.
Or you could look for a used DVCam VTR. A used Sony DSR-11 will often sell for around $1000.00 on eBay.

  • DVCAM tapes to FCE setup required

I need to transfer DV footage from 4 DVCAM tapes onto my G5 for editing in FCE. I'm waiting to receive my copy of FCE HD and I have located a place where I can rent a Sony DSR-11 DVCAM deck. But I am totally unsure on how to connect the DSR-11 to my G5. The DSR-11 shows (I look at brochures) a DV IN/OUT which uses a 4pin iLink DV in-out cable which appears different from the firewire connections in th G5, even if the sales rep at the rental outfit told me there is Firewire out on the deck. Can it be connected directly to my Mac using a Firewire 800 cable or do I need a capture card with the DV IN?. Will Final Cut Express see the DSR as a camcorder/deck? Incidentally I also just received a Director's Cut Take 2 Media box which I could use with the S-Video inputs and DSR S-Video outputs, but it would mean a double conversion, wouldn't it?
Any insight greatly appreciated before I commit money to the rental of the deck. Thank you

You need a four-pin to six-pin FireWire cable. Use the rear FW 400 port on the computer. Yes, FCE will see it. Make sure the deck and FEC are set to work in PAL.

  • MiniDV vs DVCam tapes

    Hello,
I'm about to shoot a 60min documentary with a Sony PD-150. Since I'd be going through a lot of tapes, I was wondering if there's any advantage to using the professional DVCam tapes over the regular consumer-grade MiniDV tapes.
Is there a difference in picture/sound quality? Or is it mainly a matter of durability for archival purposes?
    Thanks.
    TD

Picture quality, DV or DVCAM, is totally dependent on
lenses and the chips recording the images. Otherwise
    it's the same.
That's what I figured, but wasn't sure because I've never done any test shoot of the same thing with 2 different types of tapes.
I was curious partly because I just wanted to know for future reference, partly because where I am, DVCam tapes are very hard to come by, and they are quite expensive (30USD for DVCam vs 3USD for a MiniDV tape). Considering the amount of tape we'd go through for a 60min doc, using DVCam tapes would take a good chunk out of the tiny budget.
    thanks for all the replies.

  • Adobe Viewer Compatibility with Android Mobiles... anyone know which?

We've created a digital magazine using Adobe DPS and deployed it online here:  http://www.thinkingtackle.korda.co.uk/landing.html   (click VIEW under TTD3) to launch the online verison rather than App versions
It should redirect to the live mag in Adobe Content Viewer...
Works fine on Mac, PC, iOS.... BUT no joy on the plethora of mobiles we've tried it on...  Samsung Galaxy S3 and various others...
Keen to understand the limitations or extent of Adobe Content Viewer's compatibility with Andriod Mobiles/Tablets
    Can anyone advise?
    Best
    Nick@Code

    Hi Bob,
Adobe Content Viewer from Google Play (May 1, 2013) is both compatible and works fine on my Nexus 4 phone. We understand that adding the Android phone compatibility might cause poor app rating as the buttons/controls will be hard to tap on the smaller screens. But publisher could add these limitations to the app description. So my question is if support for Android phones could be added to the custom viewer as an optional feature checkbox, please.
    Thank you,
    Gennady
