HVR-Z1U Capture Issue

Issue: FCP 7 will only recognize the HVR-Z1U in "log and capture" when using "DV-NTSF" and I notice that the cam display on the firewire port (HVR-Z1U) switches to "dv".
HVR-Z1U display on cam playback confirms that the footage is in fact HDV.

Hi
Your camera has the ability to downconvert HDV to DV on the firewire output. *Make sure that feature is not turned on.* If it is on, then the camera is converting the HDV to a DV signal on the firewire output, which would explain your problem. See page 70 of your owner's manual.
Hope this helps.

  • HVR-Z1U capture settings.

First off.. if you can get one... do it. Amazing.
    The question is...
I'm looking for the ideal capture setting for this camera and getting a little lost in the options. I shoot most of my material using Cineframe 30 and importing the footage using the in camera "Squeeze" feature which gives you a stunning letterboxed image. While shot in the HD setting, Im cutting the material in DV format for now and wondering which capture preset to use.
Everything was shot HD but our footage needs to be DV and eventually put out on Beta masters. Other than capturing at full HD... any suggestions for the best looking footage?
    thanks in advance

    looking footage?
You don't capture at full HD if you're going to need DV for the edit. If you are going to edit in DV, the camera should have a switch that down-converts your HD to DV through the firewire, so you can use the standard DV (pal/ntsc... where ever you are)...
I don't know... are you talking about a camera? the sony Z1? i Suddenly realized i might have totally missed your point...

  • HV20/FCP6/FW Problems/Capture Issues/WTH?!?!?!?!?!

Hello everyone. I have a Canon HV20 that was working fine for a day or two while I was capturing both HDV and DV footage from MIni DV tapes. I opened the log and capture window after changing tapes and BAM! it said it couldn't find the deck.
At first, I set the app up just like the Apple site said, and everything worked perfectly, even when dumping DV footage. Cameras setting never changed from factory default. Now this, and what's worse is that my computer won't recognize the FW device. I do have a G-tech plugged in as well, and with no HV20 the computer recognizes it in the FW800 port, but as soon as I plug in the HV20 the computer doesn't recognize anything though the drive still operates.
    I get this from FCP:
"Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device."
I get this from System Profiler:
    "FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec"
If your advice is to purchase a new 17" MBP, I just might since i have had it with this POS right now.

Assuming the your FCP6 setup has not changed:
Canon cameras do not play well with other devices (hard drive for example) on the same FW bus. My son had capture issues with a Canon HV30 and G-Raid 2 on a 2007 Quad Mac Pro.
    The work-around:
Capture to an internal drive and move the media to the external, switch scratch disk, and reconnect media. (not ideal).
    The "fix":
Purchase a FW card for the MBP Express card slot and connect one of the FW devices to it. (Each device on different FW Buses.

  • Macam or Parian cause capture issues???

Hello all - I've been having capture issues with my HDV stuff (Crashes during capture - I posted the details under 'Crash under HDV log and Capture' if anyone can help me out with that issue and this is slightly related...
People elsewhere say that Macam or Parian can affect Final Cut - any experiences with that? any other programs that I should avoid that could negatively affect my fcp performance?
    Thanks!
    - John

I'm using FCP7 on Snow Leopard.
Any idea as to what could cause fcp to crash during capture (HDV to ProRes) if it's worked more then a dozen times prior??? Any other programs could affect such things? Nothing has been installed or changed on my system in over a month.

  • 24p advanced capture issue

    hi, folks...
posing an old question that was never completely resolved because i've bumped up against it again.
here's the situation: i've shot and edited hours of footage at 24p advanced on a canon xl2. captured using 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal without problems-- edited nicely into sequence.
but somewhere along the line something happened. now when i capture 24p footage and edit into the timeline i get motion blur every fourth frame (the pulldown frame?) the only way i can get a clean clip is if i capture 23.98 footage using the DV NTSC (30 fps) setting rather than 2:3:3:2 pulldown, then use the "advanced pulldown removal" feature from the tool bar after the fact (thanks patrick for this work-around).
so... situation is i can deal with this funky capture issue but it's an extra step and a pain in the rear-- anyone have any theories on how this happened and/or a permanent fix so i can shoot and capture the way fcp is supposed to work?
btw: checked the camera set-up again -- still 24p advanced, triple checked my fcp capture and sequence settings-- it's all at 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal and 23.98 as it should be. clip analysis on captured clips shows frame rate coming in at 23.98... as it should. couldn't find anything on topic in the search. appreciate thoughts. thanks much.

have you changed or downloaded anything at all that
might force the change in procedure, like a quicktime
update perchance, ipod update maybe???? just fishing
    for a clue......
thanks, zeb... but no. i do remember the day things went haywire-- i captured footage off one of the reels and noticed two of five clips had captured at 29.97 instead of 23.98. it was puzzling but i went back through capture presets, sequence, etc and remember double checking and resetting all the pertinent settings before going back and recapturing the footage that had come in a 29.97. it then captured at 23.98-- but the every-fourth-frame motion blur issue cropped up at that point. and it's been happening ever since.
i know the fcp settings are correct -- i just don't get it.
fyi... i notice that as footage plays out through the firewire from the xl2, it looks fine in the camera viewfinder but i can see the motion issues on the log and capture window as it plays-- this is obvious even before initiating capture.

  • So many capturing issues...Can anyone help?

    Hello fellow editors,
Over the past 2 weeks I have been struggling to fix my capturing issue. I have read the forums and have tried everything people have said about revlevant issues. So I ask for some help please.
I am editing on FCP 5 I use a Duel 2.0 G5 2.0 GB ram, I use 2 internal drives and 2 Lacies external. My deck is a JVC Mini DV/SVHS combo model number SR-VS30U.
So here are the issues either the deck fails to initilize or FCP sees the deck but the Preview is disabled and not allowing me to capture.
How do I fix this, I have been capturing often but just recently have started seeing all these issues.

So here are the issues either the deck fails to
initilize or FCP sees the deck but the Preview is
disabled and not allowing me to capture.
An obvious question: any adjustments - upgrades to Mac OS X, FCP, QuickTime 7 or alterations in hardware - in your system since your system decided to go AWOL on you?
Also, in terms of FireWire control, (not familiar with the exact model, so sorry if this isn't applicable) do you have device control but just not the ability to preview within the Log & Capture Window?
And do you have the ability to monitor externally? I've found that - in FCP 5 - if the deck is turned off for any reason - I shut it off once when a tape got jammed - the Log & Capture window will not be able to Preview but I was still able to Capture - and Batch Capture, at that - thanks to external monitoring.

  • Capture from Sony HVR-Z1U

I have recently purchased a Sony Z1U and was unable to capture in FCE4. I later found out that FCE4 will only capture from the Z1U in DV mode and NOT in HDV. Why is this? Is all my HDV media useless now that I have FCE4? Should I only shoot in DV mode from now on? I also have a small Sony HRD-CX7. Will FCE4 capture from this device?
Any help for this newbie would be appreciated!

"do not connect to the computer. Connect it to the hard drive so they are on a single FireWire chain. The computer will have difficulty passing information back and forth on FW when there are multiple devices on multiple ports but on a single bus"
In theory this may be true, however my external drive only has (2) 1394b ports. My camera has (1) four pin 1394a port that converts to a six pin 1394a through the cable assembly. There is no way to chain these components together (via my external drive anyways) as far as I can see. Is this a critical issue? Should I invest in a different drive? I guess I could connect to my ED via esata using an express card. Would this approach lessen the load on the FW bus during capture and delegate a separate bus for ED control?
    Any thoughts on this?

  • Capturing HDV 1080i50 with Sony HVR-Z1U

Long winded question... hope someone can offer some insight.
The answer to this may have been posted earlier, but sifting through the topics, I couldn't find any relating. If someone could be so kind to link me to any related topics, that would be helpful.
I'm editing a project in Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 that is a mix of HDV and DV, but will be finishing the final product in HDV. I've edited the original project in regular DV, but am batch capturing in the HDV footage according my XML.
But I can't seem to connect the camera.
Easy Setup: HDV - 1080i50 gives me an error "Unable to locate the following external devices: HDV (1440 x 1080) 2 fps)"
Going into Audio/Visual Settings and setting Capture settings to HDV and Device control preset to HDV Firewire gives me an error "Unable to initialize capture device and device control" (or for any device control preset with the HDV Capture setting for that matter)
Any device control preset with "HDV - Apple intermediate codec" will give me an error with "Unable to initialize HDV deck. Please make sure a deck is connected and try again".
Camera: In/Out VCR mode is set to Auto, i.Link Converter is set to "Off", A/V->DV Out is set to on.
Camera is on and plugged in. I've tried plugging the firewire into different ports and have also tried various firewire cables. Sometimes the device is controllable, but all it does is play the tape, never gets around to capturing anything.
    .... sigh....
    Thanks in advance,
    _tess
Power PC G5 (iMac)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

AIC is not going to work for recapture, AIC doesn't use the original timecode off the master tape. Make sure you setup HDV 50i and before connecting the firewire cables go into the camera vtr mode then menu, then rec in out and set the ilink convert to off for HDV. the Camera will show HDV lights. Then connect to the computer and open log and capture.

  • Freakish capture issue

I have been successfully capturing HDV footage from my Sony Z1U over 86 reels since last year with no problem.
Until today, Reel 87 comes up with a conundrum. And it's an important job (graduation) for a big client (to us.)
What happens is this: At 10:38 into the clip, the captured clip starts back at an earlier point and continues that until media end. In other words, we are unable to capture the final four minutes of the footage beause it is overwritten with earlier footage from the same clip.
I have been using Capture Now a lot, and have never had such an issue. One of my attempts to fix has included logging and batch capture, which results in the exact same clip error. The clip looks the same in Quicktime, so it's not just an FCP viewing error.
After deleting the clip, I have tried to recapture several times, changing hard drives by unchecking the first one where the problem occurred. Every time the result is the same: last four minutes overwritten by earlier footage, even though the missing footage is visible on the monitor as it is being captured.
Is there any other way around this?
I would really appreciate any help on this issue.
    G4, dual 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 internal, five firewire

I went back to the original drive, and found that in Quicktime the clip is fine.
But when I import that clip into FCP, it goes back to the truncated condition, just as before. Making a copy of the clip on the desktop does not work, nor does importing into a new project.
So the problem resides in FCP, not in the capture process itself. Timecode appears normal, as it does in the truncated FCP clip.
Needs more work. Thanks for the suggestions. All helpful.
Did FCP make some error in its internal data during the original capture? Is there any way to clear that data?

  • Sony HVR-HD1000E capture setting in FCP 6.0.6

One of my clients has a Sony HVR-HD1000E mini-dv camera & contacted me when they were having trouble capturing video.
The camera captures at HDV 1080i50, so set FCP to this but says it cannot communicate with the camera. If I set FCP to DVCPRO HD-1080i50 then it communicates with the camera but when I try to capture, Preview is disabled. With the capture window open I then change the setting to DV PAL Anamorphic & apply the setting the preview window becomes active. I then change it back to DVCPRO HD-1080i50 & apply, the preview window is active & I can capture without any problems.
I spoke to Sony & they agree with me that FCP should be set to HDV 1080i50 & cannot explain why there is a problem other than FCP is having a bit of a wobble & needs reloading/updating etc.
I have connected the camera to three different machines with FCP 6 & all do the same, also tried different firewire cables but no difference.
I can tell you that it worked fine for about 6 months but no one knows on what settings so I'm hoping that someone with the same camera reads this & can tell me what settings they use.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Bob

    Hello there,
I am owner of HVR HD1000E and I am working with FCP 6.05. Here is the setup you should have in FCP and everything will work just perfect:
    OPEN - File - Audio/video settings:
    Summary: Seq.present - HDV 1080i50
                    Capture preset - HDV
Device control preset  - Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
Video Playback (if use) - Digital cinema desktop Prewiew
                    Audio Playback - Default
    Sequence preset: HDV 1080i50
    Capture preset: HDV
Device control preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
    Thats it!
Open Sequence in FCP and check Settings:
    General: Frame size: 1440x1080 (16:9)
                 Pixel aspect ratio: HD 1440x1080
                 Field dominance: None
                 Compressor: HDV 1080i50
                 Audio: 48kHz, 16bit, stereo
For export use: Quicktime movie, CURRENT Settings! If you want small file size and very quick export, than unchecked "make movie self contained". But if you wish your mov file transport to other computer..., than you must check "make movie self contained". In booth cases you're movie will be 1920x1080 HD crystal picture!
I hope my help isn't too late!
    Best regards from Slovenia

  • Canon  Vixia HV30 capture issue on CS6 (Mac OSX)

This might be (hopefully) something in setup, but under Mac OSX Lion (10.7.4) / Premiere CS6, i am unable to capture video from my Canon Vixia HV30 - it's either i get a monstruous noise or simply get a 'capture device offline' message.
No one ever had a similar problem even withanother cam here? I posted weeks ago but never got any reply.
Am using the same cam under Windows with Premiere CS4 and never faced such an issue.
Matter of some sort of CODEC ?  Does not seem to require any specific driver for Mac based on Canon website.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Solved... (Almost!)
Someone pointed out that Canon has a software (they said there was no driver for Mac OS X so I had stopped looking...) But if it may help others, there is a ''CameraWindow'' for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8  available.
As soon as I installed it, I could capture both from Adobe Premiere CS6 and iMovie.
One problem remaining though : the noise (feedback-like) that gets out from... the system's sound card ! (when capture is ongoing). I have to shut down the volume completely.  Never had this issue under Windows, need to figure out why this happens now.
Jeff thanks again for your assistance, even though the solution was somewhere else.
If anyone has a clue for the noise issue ... please let me know
    Rob

  • DVCPRO capture issues - FCP or tape issue ?

Can anyone help me rule out whether this is a tape issue or a problem with my system ?
Trying to capture from DVC PRO tapes - problem is I don't know if they are DVC PRO 25 , DVC PRO 50, or HD
(we inherited these tapes from another company, who shot them but is not being forthcoming about how they shot...)
I have a Panasonic AJ-SD93 deck hooked up to Final Cut 5.1.4 via 6pin firewire (G5)
I start playing tape with regular DV NTSC settings in Log & Capture, timecode seems to be rolling continuously, the deck display says i is DVC PRO 50 - then I hit Capture Now and I get a freeze frame, and an error message :
Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted.
So is it the tape ?
The weird thing is I was able to capture up to about 10 min of the first tape.
Even when playing back, something changes on the tape at about 10 min - but what ? Timecode is continuous - what coudl change and make it uncapturable ?.

Did you choose the proper Easy Setup? You need to choose the Easy Setup that matches the footage, so FCP knows what sort of signal to expect. If you try capturing DVCPRO 50 as DV/NTSC, then you would get this error.

Problem: Whenever I capture anything through my AJA Kona LHi Capture Card, I have an issue of a thin strip of distorted lines at the top of the capture screen and a thin black strip on the right of the capture screen. Why it is capturing this along with the footage is the question. In order to prevent the those areas from showing up on the final product, I have to zoom the footage somewhat outside of the frame which lowers the quality of the footage. Below are screenshots of what I am describing as well as screenshots of my capture and sequence settings.
