Hvrm25u vs. hvrm15U hdv deck

I'm considering purchasing one of two sony hdv decks in the near future. Either the Sony HVR-M15U or the HVR-M25U. The HVR-M25U has an HDMI output and runs the price tag up about $1000. Does anyone have any recommendations on whether this output will be worth the extra price.
Thanks

well the HDMI output would be a big benefit when coupled with the Blackmagic Intensity card, which would allow you to capture direct to DVCPRO HD, currently the peoples choice for compressed HD editing. the M25 also offers an adjustable edge crop when you're downcoverting to SD 4:3, plus a 720P downconversion option that you wont get with the M15.
you also get , of course, the built-in 2.7-inch 16:9 LCD monitor which allows you to see Timecode, Audio Levels and/or picture on the deck itself, which is pretty useful feedback for reviewing tapes.
worth the extra price? depends on your needs.

  • Unable to initialize HDV deck.   Please make sure a deck is connected....

Ok, this is driving me nuts. I've done this before. I have a Canon HV20. I spent HOURS and HOURS on Sunday (two days ago) capturing 1.5 hours of video (DV, not HD) from my HV20 using iMovie09. Then spent more hours burning a DVD using iDVD09. Results were less than glamorous. Quite disappointing, video-quality-wise....
So today I reinstalled FCE 4.0 (HD) and decided to capture a few minutes of the same film and compare the results when making a DVD. My expectations are that it will look better. Naturally, I was hoping for the less-expensive, easier to use product (iMove09) would win, but so far, I can't compare because I keep getting "Unable to initialize HDV deck...". Folks, I have a firewire cable connected. I just used the same camera on the same cable on the same computer (macbook pro). the ONLY thing i changed was the software. Even switched back to iMovie for a minute to see if the cable still worked and sure enough, it's fine.
So, I'm blank on ideas here as to why "FILE/CAPTURE" in FCE would give me this error now. I'm waaaaaaaay open to ideas and even open to "stupid user error"... just tell me what it is....
This is soooooooooooo frustrating. Now I remember why I don't do video that often. Real pain in the butt sometimes...
    Thoughts????

    "Unable to initialize HDV deck...".
You seem to be trying to capture DV?
At the moment FCE is looking for a HDV camera and there is not one attached, a DV camera is.
Change the Easy Setup to the correct DV option to match the cameras output (audio and video), save, then try again.

  • Unable to Intialize HDV deck - can anyone pls help me with this FCE Issue?

I have recently moved from a MacBook Pro (circa 2 yrs old) to a new MacBook Pro with the NEW firewire 800 port. I have bought a new firewire cable and my camera does not want to be capture from my Sony A1E.
I have a MacBook Pro 2.8ghz running on OS X 10.6.2 and have all the updates installed for FCE.
Every time i try to capture the message comes up "Unable to Intialize HDV deck. Please make sure a deck is connected and try again".
The System is set up to receive the correct frame rate footage and type of footage (which is: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50. Formats: All formats). I am running on PAL, so 25fps.
Is there any advice / direction that you could give me at all as I am struggling!
Any help support would be appreciated!
    Thanks, Martin

    Hi,
Would you confirm that you are using a 9-pin to 4-pin FW cable to connect to your camcorder and that your camcorder is the only FW device connected to your Mac.
When you start up FCE with the camera connected to your Mac and already powered on in VTR mode, does FCE 'see' the camera, or do you get a warning message that FCE is "Unable to locate the following external devices ..." ?

  • Unable to initialize hdv deck problem

    Hi all,
I'm having the 'unable to initialize hdv deck' problem. I am trying to capture HD footage from a Sony HVR-A1E camera. iLink and down conversion are off (like they should be) and I have just captured a HD tape before the problem started.
I don't understand how I could capture HD footage just fine and then without touching any settings (just trying to start capture again) I suddenly get the error message, "Unable to initialize HDV deck. Please make sure a deck is connected and try again."
    Any ideas?

Definitely. Shot on HDV, definite difference between the clips I've captured so far (HD capture that worked fine before this is high quality sharp image, where as when capturing in SD, image quality is poor and smaller).
Everything has been filmed on the same camera with no setting changes between shots. Like I said before, I have already been able to capture today in HD just fine, but for some unknown reason (which I don't think is the prefs.) capture will not work. I can 'trick' FCE into HD capture but it gets stuck on cueing tape (even though video is playing fine on camera).

  • Final Cut Pro 7 not recognizing Sony HDV Deck on older 2008 version MacPro's

I am trying to connect a Sony HDV deck to Final Cut Pro version 7 on an older 2008 version MacPro.  The problem was with the firewire mini port on the back i believe because i used a different deck which was the same model - but the only difference was it had a firewire 400 port instead of mini firewire port.  Anyway, the deck with the 400 firewire port worked for logging and capturing, etc... (this also worked when i re-tested it on the 2008 MacPro)  Im wondering if anyone else has had problems with the firewire mini port on the Sony HDV deck because it seems like almost every HDV deck i have with mini firewire has problems connecting to final cut pro or any editing application.  I know now that the deck i had in question the mini port is not working correctly but is there a way to fix this or prevent the cable - deck from terminating the connection with the mini cable being used.  I dont need an answer to the deck problem because i figured it out but just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem.  Thank you...
    Kyle

    >I dont need an answer to the deck problem ... just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem
So you don't want an answer, just insight. OK, I'll give it a go.  I've had several Sony VTRs with the 4pin Firewire port (proper name for what you refer to as "mini"), which is the same type of port that most DV and HDV cameras use as well.  One of the main things you need to be wary of is plugging in and unplugging a Firewire cable while either the device or the computer is powered on.  I know that marketing hype claims that Firewire is hot swap-able, but it really isn't safe to do so.  The pins in both the 4 pin connector as well as the 6 pin connectors are very close together and if they aren't aligned exactly right with the socket, can easily cause arching and damage a Firewire port on either or both ends.  Is that the kind of insight you were looking for?

  • Cannot preview or monitor on hdv deck

    Hi,
I have a Sony HVR-10P HDV deck connected to FCP 5.1.2 with a dual 2GHz G5, 2.5GB Ram. I've just upgraded with the intention of running HDV but I can't seem to get a running signal to this HDV deck. When I select the the 'video playback' the HDV output settings are greyed out. What does this mean?
I have selected HDV editing from 'Easy Setups'. I've re-connected firewire and rebooted FCP. I can output a still frame through Firewire DV, but still, this doesn't run as video, it only presents a still frame when paused.
Is this something to do with the deck? I've also tried all the HDV Firewire Basic and 25fps HDV for PAL options.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    thanks,
    Sam

you can not preview/monitor HDV live from the timeline via FW
if you want to edit with HDV and view the timeline to an external monitor, as you might with DV, then you must use third party equipment such as the Matrox MXO box, or a suitable HD card from AJA or Decklink

  • Trouble with a SONY HDV deck HVR-M10U

I have a DSR-11 that operates thru firewire.  It works properly.  A client recently loaned me an HDV deck and gave me some HDV tapes to digitize.  So I plugged that into the deck's Firewire connection.  When I do the EZ setup for the HDV codec, it says it's not connected.  Athe Mac Pro end I have a Firewire 400 cable end converted to Firewire 800.  That works fine for the DSR-11.  So now I don't know what to do.  I'm thinking there's some way to capture without control using composite video out and RCA audio jacks.  I have a decklink extreme card but I don't think it accepts composite video, only Y-in.   I'm out of ideas.

When you choose HDV from the Easy Set Up, FCP looks to find an HDV deck.
If the HDV deck is set to down convert to DV, the deck identifies itself to the firewire bus as a DV deck and FCP reports not being able to find an HDV deck.
Not saying this is the problem, but it is something to check.

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 not recognizing HDV deck

I have tried a couple different Sony HDV decks and my Final Cut won't seem to recognize them. I have made sure all the A/V settings are correct, i have restarted the software and the deck. Everything is set to 1080/60i, and it still won't recognize it. Any help please?

    Welcome to the forum!
You'll get good advice here and it's worth a visit even if you don't have a problem - you'll learn a lot from reading the posts.
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Can't preview 1920x1080 timeline on HDTV via Sony HDV deck - help!

I am trying to play back from my 1920x1080 HDTV timeline (from FCP on MacBook) on an LG HDTV by connecting to a Sony HDV deck via firewire 800, and then going out from the deck via component to the tv – however, I am having problems not being able to get a clean video signal & it seems that the deck cannot process the video stream properly.  After scouring the internet and various forums, the only conclusion that I can reach is that because the HD video needs to be processed, it is impossible to properly view the footage back via this method without something like a Blackmagic Decklink card/conversion syste.  This is quite a big problem for me, as I will probably in the future have to use the same method just to play out to tape (on the HDV deck) and no matter what settings I have tried, it just doesn't want to work!
Any hints or tips to bypass this without the need for any other external hardware?  Would something like  a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Cable help at all – we have one of those.

FW800 can't stream full uncompressed HD video, which is what the HDTV needs.  You need an HDMI connection.  You're going to need an AJA Knoa LHi or some other such card.  You may want to look into a less expensive option such as the MXO2 if you only want to see the image on an HDTV and not on a qualified Production Monitor.
Going from FCP back to the deck is a totally different issue and not a problem.  HDV is highly compressed so it can stream via FW connection.  FCP using the Print To Tape function will take your Sequence and send a native HDV signal back to your deck, just when it captured from the deck.
HDTV will not be good enough for evaluating image quality and color correction, FYI.  It will only give you an idea of what your vide will look like on that specific brand and model of HDTV.
DVI and VGA have nothing to do with what you're trying to do.  They are only for going out to a computer monitor (not the same as a TV) or a projection system.

  • Connecting a HDV deck

    Hi,
I am using a Sony HDV deck - HVR-M15U as a basic DV deck for my project. I use the latest intel pro mac -quad core with 4GB Ram - FCP 6.0.2.
I have had no problem capturing from DV tape from this deck. But the moment I pop in an HDV tape and select the HDV capture setting (1080i 60i firewire basic), I get a dialog message telling me FCP cannot see the deck.
    What am I missing here?
Is there a weird set of reconfigurations needed to take in HDV?
    Any thoughts?
My DV project will have to use HDV material it seems.
    Any thoughts?

  • HDV Deck suggestion

I have a XL-H1 and am l looking for an affordable HDV. I frequently shoot 24f and have heard there might be compatibility issues for playback. Anyone have any suggestions/input?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Did I answer this same question in another forum...because it sounds familiar...
Canon does not make an HDV deck, so you are stuck using the camera. All the HDV formats are exclusive...A tape shot with the Sony, JVC or Canon HDV cameras will not play on any of the other companies cameras or decks.
There is no standardization for HDV...but then again there is no standardization for HD either...

  • Log and capture with Sony A1U camera, Sony HD700 HDV deck

    Hello,
I am still having problems capturing HDV from a Sony GV HD700.
It sees the deck, can capture some, but then crashes. Anybody have experience
with certain decks and cameras not able to capture with Final cut 7?
I am stumped. Settings are HDV.....1080I 60 ... on presents.

  • No external video from HDV timeline through Sony HDV deck.

Without buying an external video card, is there a way to view an HDV timeline on an external monitor? I can capture HDV footage easily and see it play back fine in the Canvas on my Mac Pro, but I can't see the captured HDV footage on my external monitor that's hooked up via FireWire to my Sony HVR-M25 deck.
Here are the Audio/Video Settings I'm using:
Sequence Preset is HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset is HDV
Device Control Preset os Sony HDV Firewire
I'm also noticing that the Video Playback HDV options are grayed out, so I'm assuming I would either need an external video card to play back the capture HDV footage the timeline on my external monitor, or use another combination of codecs to (maybe) use my stock Mac Pro setup. Whew.
    Thanks in advance.

No. Sorry, but the format doesn't allow it. You can send a downconverted SD signal out via firewire in realtime, but it won't be your full HD image. If you want the full HD image, you need an HD capture device. #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • Capturing from a Decklink HD Extreme card and HVR-M15 HDV deck

Probably not the best place to post this but I sent a request to Blackmagic Tech Support and also posted on the COW.
I was wondering if anyone is using this card/deck and how they are cabling it into their Mac. I am using a Quad G5 and have both the consumer and professional cables to go into my card. Installed it today and everything is working great but want to get the best quality.
    Thanks all...

ah, much worse than I feared. After spending the day with this gent it turns out several things are wrong w/ the system.
One: The new LaCie Big Two drive always comes up with a dialogue box saying the drive isn't readable, but we are to ignore that. There is something wrong with the way LaCie's config file is set... they know about it, but can't do anything about it. that dialogue box comes up every single time you start your computer. LaCie says it's a Leopard thing!
Two: The Blackmagic HD Extreme card and JVC BR-U50 is a waste of money as it turns out. When tech support finally asked if I was trying to capture HDV 1280 @ 24p...that's when the tech guy says, 'Oh, there's your problem. We don't capture 24p...sorry. You can only edit and output, you can't capture. You have to use firestorm instead.'
Okay. He now captures his HDV via firewire and doesn't even use the Blackmagic card now.
    wow.
    anyway, thanks for your advice...

  • Looking to buy an HDV deck

    Hi,
I need to dub working copies of my master tapes. We shoot in HDV. Could anyone recomend some decent decks that copy HDV tapes?
    Thanks,
    Tom

You could buy a Sony M15, but a used HC3 would be way cheaper.
