HVX200 - 720/24pN - Raid or Drive

OK, so I have searched and read a lot of enourmously helpful info on shooting 24pN and editing it in FCP. So I have one final question.
Can I edit DVOPRO HD 720/24pN footage on a 17"MBP with FCP5.1.1 and 2 gigs RAM with a G-DRIVE (not G-RAID)? I have 2 250 gig G-DRIVEs that we have because we need to travel with them and they take up less space and weigh less than G_RAIDs. Will they be fast enough on FW00?
Thanks
K

DVCPRO HD at 24PN will be fine on firewire 400 drives.

  • 720 24pn to 1080 24p upconvert,  and DNxHD or QT uncompressed

I've finished my P2, 720 24pn documentary in Avid and want to deliver a 1080 24p master on hard drive to put to HDCam tape for a Da Vinci color correction.
I've exported a quicktime reference to After Effects and nested the 720 project in a 1920 x 1080 composition (to include all the 4k photos and titles).
Is this the best way to upconvert 720 to 1080? It looks great...
And is using the DNxHD 175 10 bit codec for the quicktime export as good as an uncompressed 10 bit quicktime? The resulting file size on a 100 minute file is 150 GB's vs 1.5 TB's.....
I have searched and searched the forum, but it's not easy to find the Truth!!

FYI for anyone wondering in the future, this is what my Da Vinci artist said:
"At my day job, doing HD spots for Sony Pictures (who are very particular about picture quality), the editors are also using Avid's DNX compression. The settings they are using (at 1080 lines) are: 175X for 23.98 and 220X for 59.94. We've run tons of resolution tests and the clients find this acceptable quality for big media buys (Superbowl, American Idol, etc.)."
Another said that if my original content was film he would go uncompressed QT, but since it was P2, DNxHD 175 is the way to go.
And this article (now a year old) evaluated DNxHD vs ProRes422 and Uncompressed.....
    http://www.studiodaily.com/blog/?p=97
    excerpt:
As a control, I used Apples Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 codec. I rendered the animation to the ProRes 422 (HQ), ProRes 422, Avid DNxHD 175, Avid DNxHD 115, and Avid DNxHD 36 codecs. (Note: The DNxHD flavors are specific to 1080/24p format video. The 30i versions would be DNxHD 220 and 145.)
After re-importing the results in After Effects, I placed each file in a composition along with the Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 version and used the Difference transfer mode to illustrate where the compressed image varied from the uncompressed. The results were quite surprising.
The DNxHD 175 files difference from the uncompressed was barely visible to the naked eye, but the ProRes 422 (HQ) codec showed significant differences. In fact, in my test, the DNxHD 115 codec also outperformed the ProRes (HQ).

  • My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. And now it will not mount despite my various efforts. I don't know what else to do. Can someone help me with this?

My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. I copied some files from another drive onto the RAID drive, ejected it, and worked on another project for a few hours. When I went to mount the RAID drive again so I could work on the project associated with the drive (I'm a freelance video editor) it would not mount. I've tried everything. It boots up perfectly fine, the drive seems to have no hardware problems. It shows up on Disk Utility and in System Information but is listed as not mounted. I've verified it on Disk Utility and it tells me everything with the drive is fine. I've tried all the various restarting my iMac, ejecting and reconnecting the drive, shutting down the whole system and starting it back up, relaunching Finder, and nothing works. Starting to panic because this is a client's drive, I have no idea what the issue is, it worked perfectly fine only hours ago, nothing happened to it in the meantime, and I fear continuously connecting and ejecting it because I don't know what the state is with the data and if this is only going to further aggravate the problem. I've been up and down Apple and g-raid forums and can't get a straight answer anywhere. I need to know that the data is safe, the drive is undamaged, and how to get it to mount on my iMac. Can anyone out there help me with this??

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Is the latest iMac compatible with external raid 1 drive setups?

I'm considering different new Mac options to replace my first gen Mac Pro. The new and most outfitted iMac seems like a good solution for my mostly Photoshop work. But, is the new iMac compaticle with Thunderbolt external RAID multi drive enclosures?

Sure, why not contact OWC (www.macsales.com) where they sell RAID solutions for Macs. Because they specialize in Macs they test every product they sell.

  • Software raid 1 drive(s) failed

Curious on what to do with a RAID 1 Drive (s) failure? I've searched the community and cannot find similar issue/answers.
    Configuration:
One 1TB OS & App Drive is fine
Two 3TB RAID 1 Drives for Video scratch are fine
Two 2TB RAID 1 Data Drives are my issue
I'm using the software raid in OSX and it shows "2TB Data Drive/Mirrored Offline"
Both drives have "Failed" next to them
I have backup this Data Drive in Time Machine and a recent full back up to a single drive that is off site.  I believe I have a good back up strategy with Time Machine and offsite back ups via Voyager S3.  I guess we'll find out!
My question is how do I find out if it's a HW issue or SW issue with this configuration ?  And then how to go about recovering them?
Initially when I looked in Disk Utility it appeared that only one of the 2TB drives had "Failed" next to it but now after a reboot "Failed" is next to both drives.
My initial hope was that one of the drives had failed and I'd be able to just replace that drive and the RAID System would rebuild from the other drive.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks

RAID 1 just copies the same data to two (or more) drives at the same time, it's only for mission critical data loss requirements where a drive failure during writing would be catastrophic. Like taking purchasing orders or getting a phone call from ET for example.
RAID 0 is dangerous as the data path is separated to how many drives in the RAID 0 set, one drive glitches and all data is lost. But provides insane speeds.
RAID 5 is a much more reliable, it combines many drives (4 or more for more speed) splitting the data path but also has redundancy factor that if a drive dies it can be replaced and the data is recovered from the other drives. Usually a RAID 5 is in a external enclosure with it's own cooling and hardware controllers, not software based RAID where your CPU is being overloaded.
There are other forms of RAID some combinations like RAID 1+0, RAID 6, 10 and so forth, you can find out more about the more eclectic RAID types online.
RAID 5 is more ideally suited to video requirements for data storage, with perhaps a RAID 0 as a scratch disk or a RAID 0 + 1 (the RAID 0 is mirrored to another RAID 0) if your going to take a while working on it that increases the potential of failure.
Once the work is completed, it's sent to the RAID 5 where it's safe with it's redundancy and speed.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/RAID/Desktop
The thing to remmeber with the failed RAID 1 Data drive is the data is still on the drive, even though it failed and perhaps things are messed up a little on it on the directory. All the drive needs is to be told it's not part of a RAID 1 anymore, that it's a normal drive, a simple fix, but I don't know how to go about it.
You have two drives and two chances to recover the data off off, simply disconnect one data drive and reboot, see if it will mount and or you can repair the drive in Disk Utility.
If not pull one drive out and stick another blank one in there and download Data Rescue and simply recover the files to the new blank drive. DR works by simply reading the files themselve, not the file struture or anything else.
Software RAID is unreliable, it depends upon the CPU. Opt to get a external RAID where it's based in hardware instead. Use eSATA if all possible.
Also consider using backup software, like Carbon Copy Cloner which can be scheduled to make a backup of your data during the middle of the night. This way if something happens to either your boot drive or a data drive, the clone won't immediately copy the issue to the other drive like a RAID 1 does.
Also Carbon Copy Cloner makes "hold option" bootable OS X boot drive clones, which TimeMachine doesn't.
Also TM kicks in what, like once a hour? It's likely what caused your issue, CCC will work when you schedule it.  TM is for consumers, not video pro's like yourself.

  • Playback of 720 24pn footage

I have a project that was shot on the Panasonic P2 camera, I have the footage in my timeline and it plays at 100% but the actual speed seems to be less than 50%. I'm not sure why. Compressor seems to be correct and the files are straight from the P2 card. also it seems to be a bit stuttery how can I smooth that out. I'm using FCP7.
    Thanks
    Mark

That may be as I did not change the settings on the camera when I rented it. I saw that it was 720 24pn and expected that would be ok. Guess I'll have to manually speed the footage up. It's a good thing I didn't need the audio.
    Thanks

  • HVX200- 720/60P in 23.97 timeline... ramp problems.

I am having difficulty trying to modify the speed of my timelapse shots (1F per 1sec) that were taken in the 720/60P mode in a 23.97 timeline. The clips play fine (after rendering) when I do not modify the speed.
Basically most of the project is being shot in the 720/24PN mode but I did a few timelapses with the 720/60P mode that I wanted to ramp up, but when I put it in the timeline, modified the speed and rendered it the clip goes well then stops about 3/4 of the way through.
Is there a specific modify speed % for this situation? Would I be better off trying to do the timelapse at 720/30P for this specific timeline?
Understanding that I can not use the intervalometer function (1 frame per 1 second) in 24PN or 24P.
    anybody? thanks.
    g5 quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

To avoid glitches with different modes in the same project, I edit the section with the odd mode (your 720/60P) and then export it as a separate clip into the mode you want to use in your timeline (your 720/24P). It cuts down on your editing options later, but it also cuts down on hassles especially when exporting the final file.

  • Trying to unload a Sun Server & 720 Gig RAID

Trying not to be too obnoxious about this, but...
I was trying to get an venture off the ground and it fell through. Spent alot of time on these boards as I got Oracle running on Linux then Solaris. I now have a 4 CPU / 4 gig sun server an a 720 gig RAID collecting dust in my basement and my wallet is significantly lighter. If anyone is interested in picking up some fully operational equipment, let me know. I will sell it for much less than it is currently listed if I get to the end of the auction without any bids.

  • Boot from external raid hard drive in new iMac 2012

Just owned iMac 2012 21.5", but seemed internal drive is pretty slower than my previous iMac 2008.  Planning to buy external raid hard drive like Lacie 2big Raid or G-Tech 4tb G-Raid (Thunderbolt) to be my main boot drive instead of internal one.  Would this would solve the problem?

If your new Late 2012  21.5" iMac was Not ordered with the Fusion Drive option, then it came with a much slower standard 5400 rpm hard drive.  Your 2008 iMac had a 7200 rpm hard drive.  That's why this one is slower.

  • Settings for a 720/24pn downconvert to SD 29.97?

I have a 720/24pn sequence in FCP. I want to output it to a miniDV tape. I know that I can drop the sequence into a DV sequence in FCP, but won't it look better if I use Compressor to do the downconvert? Intstead of having FCP add the pulldown on the fly as I output?
In Compressor, I use the "DV NTSC" preset, but while that converts it to DV and 29.97, it doesn't add letterboxing. What setting do I change to use letterboxing? Padding? Dimensions? Something simpler?
    Thanks for your help,
    Garret
    2x.2.66 GHz Dual-Core Mac Pro, 5 GB RAM, FCP 6.0.1, OS 10.5.1, QT 7.4

Actually, the only way you can add pulldown - at least the standard 2:3:2:3 pulldown that most folks desire - within the confines of Final Cut Studio is via FireWire output. If you dropped your 24pN footage into a 29.97 timeline, you'd get what some folks generously call 2:2:2:4 pulldown. To be more honest, FCP simply doubles every 4th frame as the 5th frame. Most (battle-hardened) post professionals consider that nasty.
The benefit of using Compressor to do the downconvert - maintaining 23.98 fps, of course - is to use Frame Controls (you'd need to manually trigger them On) to produce a better quality DV file than what FCP would give you.
In terms of getting letterboxed output from Compressor, if you've got Compressor 3.0.1 or later, there is a preset under the *Pad to:* drop-down for +16:9 (1.77:1)+ that should fill-in the padding numbers for top and bottom (this is all in the Geometry pane of the Inspector). Otherwise, if you can output an anamorphic DV file and have FCP letterbox it for you, (once you drop it into a standard 4:3 DV timeline).

  • 960x720 video from shooting 720 24pn? shouldn't it be 1280x720?

I'm confused, i use to shoot footage on an HVX in 720 24pn, and when i'd edit it and export it in final cut it was always 1280x720.
now all of a sudden, all my footage is coming into final cut as 960x720. what's the deal?
I'm shooting onto P2 chips and using the 'log and transfer' feature in final cut.
is 720 footage suppose to be in 1280x720 or 960x720?

The 960x720 is part of a compression scheme. If you were to output a self-contained QuickTime movie of a 960x720 clip, it should come out as 1280x720.
    Try exporting a test clip

  • 720 24pn to 1080i

    Hi!
I'm shooting a project with a Panasonic HVX200A and I'd like to shoot 720 24Pn(Native) because of the longer record times. However, my final deliverable is HDCam 1080i. Could I just edit in an Apple Prorez 1080i 60 timeline, or would this "look weird" or be sub-optimal? I guess I could shoot 1080 24, but the short record times would be problematic. The shoot is the day after tomorrow, so any advice would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

With P2, FCP imports what you shoot. If you shoot 24pn, then you are shooting 23.98 native, and FCP will import it as such. The main issue you will face is that that format in a non-drop frame timecode ONLY. It does not drop frame timing. This makes timing the show tricky, but not impossible. If you require commercial breaks to have specific timing, that is another matter.
You might want to consider shooting 720p24 at 29.97. Same cadence, but drop frame. If you still want to do 24pn, I am available as a workflow consultant.

  • Can I install windows on a RAID hard drive?

    Hi,
I recently purchased a used macPro. This mac pro had a raid set so 4 1TB hard drives were created to make one 4 GB partition. This made the raid utility pop up frequently saying there was something wrong so I just broke the RAID set and tried to set the disk up as their on storage partitions (Just as if they were 4 normal hard drives. Now that I did this, only 3 out of the 4 hard drives are visible in disk utility. Also, I reinstalled macosx snow leopard and tried installing bootcamp but when I partition the hard drive and restart using the windows installation disk, it doesn't show that I have any available hard drives to install windows on. Is this because of my RAID disks? (Sorry I don't know anything about raid disks and didn't know this computer had it before I bought it)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

As stated in the Mac Pro RAID card FAQ you can't install Windows if you have the drives controlled by that card.
Question: Why can't I install Boot Camp on my Mac Pro or Xserve that uses a RAID?
Answer: Boot Camp does not support the installation of Windows onto a Mac using hardware or software RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Drives). Boot Camp is not supported on the Xserve with or without the Xserve RAID Card installed.

Look inside and see if there is a RAID controller from Apple, proably top slot #4. Also look in System Profile under SATA interface.
Pull non-graphic card, seems you don't need it if you have one.
You are not getting something: internal hard drives are one thing. RAID card is another. The RAID card just replaces the normal SATA controller that otherwise interfaces.
Take a look at the photos and manual for the card.
