HVX200 P2 files. Why keep them once backed up?

I am in Russia and I am capturing on average over 10 4GB cards on 30PN a day (8min per card).
I know how to download the cards and all that jazz but what I want to know is once I import the cryptic P2 files and they are converted to MOVs that FCP and Mac can read and change, why do I need the bloody HVX P2 files and folder?
I can't preview the bloody things, I can't change the names of the clips, they are useless (on a Mac) until they are imported. If I backup the imported files, what good are the original HVX files? If I rename my actual clips so that they represent something, a re-capture from the original files is useless as far a reconecting media. If I just rename the clips in FCP I have all these bloody clips in my capture bin that have meaningless names.
I really don't like the naming structure of the HVX. Why I can't at least set some kind of uniform file name so that clips I shot on the same day have similar names is beyond me. Did I miss something in the manual? Can I set a standard clip naming structure or am I stuck with the random shotgun blast naming scheme of Panasonic?
Thanks in advance..

The CONTENTS folder and all the MFX files are basically your source tapes. Don't toss those. They contain metadata information that FCP doesn't import at this time (but might later). Would you toss your DV tapes after you captured them? What if the media drive you are using dies? Then what? All your media is gone. You save these MFX files, but when you finish your project you delete the converted MOVs.
Or...if you really want, once the project is complete, you can back up the converted files and toss the MXF files. That is up to you. You are losing a lot of information (camera used, shutter speed, F-stop, tons more info) that FCP doesn't access yet, but might in the future. Other non-linear editing systems access the MXF files without converting, like Edius Broadcast and some Avids. If you moved to a different editing system in the future, wouldn't you want the source files, and not the ones converted by one application that might not work well in the new editing app? You never know what the future holds.
The files are given random names so that if you run multiple cameras, they don't create the same file name and you run into a conflict. Panasonic reps have stated that if you run 40 cameras simultaneously for 2 years, you will not run into the same clip name twice.
And the numbers aren't completely random. 0001GH, 0002D4, 0003NX...the first number is the order in which the clip was recorded on that P2 card at that time...then random numbers. And you can always name the clips after you import them...by adding it to the existing number (don't lose that). So 0001GH - Man walks down street, 0002D4 - Man enters restaurant. Or put the name before the number so that you can organize better. But keep the number, so that you can find the original in case the imported one becomes lost or corrupt.
You didn't miss anything in the manual, this is the way it is. You are stuck with the naming scheme. But learn to work with it and life is grand. Don't fight it...move with it. The more you fight it the more you will be annoyed by it. Adapt with the technology, and you will be happier. IMHO.

  • Is it possible to save files to one desktop so that they remain on that desktop and don't follow to other desktops when swiping between them? I want to save files and keep them on desktop 2 so that I can keep desktop 1 free of files but they follow.

I want to keep my school files on desktop two so they are all in the same place, and use desktop one as a place to perhaps save photos or other files not school related. When I swipe between desktops, the school files move between the desktops as I swipe but I want to keep them on one desktop all the time.

No, that can't be done.  All desktops will show what is in the 'Desktop' folder in your home folder.

  • Can I cut dv files and keep them as dv files?

Hi, I have just spent the last few days importing about 60, 45min VHS PAL analogue tapes through a Canon Mini DV camera into my iMac and out to an external HD. All the files have been saved in .dv format and each is about 9.1 GB is size.
The videos are from 1995 throught to 1998 and are holiday video and as the camera use was in its infancy there was a LOT of very bad and useless shots captured.  I didn't have the luxury of stopping and starting the capture, as was not able to capture it through FCP, I had to capture it in one tape at a time as I was digitalising it at the same time using an old application called Vidi.
So now I have all of them there I would like to be able to cut out the rubbish bits, before I bring it into FCP for the serious editing.
What I want though is to still keep the files as .dv files after I have done this and everything I have seen seems to, once I have opened them up, want to save them in a different format.
Has anyone seen an application, with features like QT Pro 7, that I can use that will scrub through the files, cut out the rubbish and save it in its original format?
    Thanks
    Matt

What you want to do is really very, very simple.
Step 1. Switch on your camera and make sure it is set up to record in SP mode with audio at 16 bits.
Connect your video deck, camera and computer. Switch all devices on before starting FCP.
Step 2. Open FCP. Before you do anything else go to the menu bar...
The Easy setup window opens. Make sure it looks like this...
Click the Setup button when it does.
    Back to the menu bar...
The Sequence settings window opens. It should look like this. You can skip the next step if it does...
You have something else? No need to fiddle about. Click that "Load Sequence Preset" button at bottom left.
Click OK to dismiss this window.
You now have the correct settings. Click OK to dismiss the Sequence Settings window.
Go to the File item in the menu bar and choose Log and Capture. Adjust the settings on the right side so that they look like this...
Don't change anything else. Start your tape and click on the Now button at bottom right. To stop a capture, press the esc key. The captured clip will land in FCP's Browser.
You have two basic ways to trim the clip:
    1. Load the clip into the Viewer. Mark in (press the i key) on the first image that you want. Mark out (press the o key) on the last image you want.
Edit this clip to the Timeline by doing one of the following: Drag the clip to the Timeline. Drag the clip to the Canvas. Press the F9 key.
There may be other sections of this clip that you also want. Find it and repeat the mark in/out procedure.
    2. Place the entire clip on the Timeline. Mark in and out on the section that you don't want. Press the Forward Delete key.
Eventually, you will have a result that you want to save. To save on your computer go to the File menu...
You will see the Save dialog. Make sure it looks like this (obviously your destination will not be the same as mine) and press OK...
    Most of all, have fun.

  • How do I move photo files and keep them connected in Elements 12

I have filled up the C drive in my PC with about 8,000 photo files.  I have installed a second hard drive in my PC and want to move all of my photo files to what is now drive F.  How do I do this while ensuring that the files remain connected to the thumbnails in Elements 12 when they take up residence on my F drive?

Even if you have the same folder structure, the organizer will find that the internal serial number of the drive is different and show all files as missing; you'll need to reconnect. That's why the backup and restore method is better. It also recognizes the need to upgrade (convert) the catalog format to the new version of Elements.
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later

  • Time Machine copies all files, but keeps growing during back up

    Hi there!
I just bought a new internal HD for my MacBook, because the old one is full. Now I hooked my external HD to my MacBook and selected this HD for backing up in TM. It said at the beginning that it would back up ±150 GB. When it got there after backupping a whole day, it kept on growing! 150GB became 160GB and is now even 175GB! I really don't get this, it doesn't really seem to be needing a coffeebreak soon, so I don't know how long this will go on. Is this a common issue?
My internal HD isn't even 175GB large, so this is why it's extra 'weird'.
    Thanks a lot in advance!!

    I'm sorry if I've been unclear! I am a computer n00b...
Anyway, the current internal drive is indeed 160GB, I bought a 500GB to replace it.
I used an external HD to back up the old one, so I could replace the internal HD and restore my system as it was.
But I didn't know I needed 320GB of free space in order to make a back up of the 160GB drive.
    EDIT
When TM didn't stop at 145 (aprox. the data I have on my drive), even though it said it was finished, I didn't know what was going on (still don't). So I think I must get myself a new external also? Isn't there other software for this?

    Lanny -
Thank you for taking the time to help with this problem. Can I just say however that as someone who has posted a first comment here and quite clearly never used a forum like this before, your comment unfortunately comes across as very excluding. It makes me feel there are a set of unwritten rules that I should know, and that I don't know them shows that the forum is not for me. In short, it's exactly the kind of response that stops people like me using forums like this.
I'm sure it's not intended to be received like this and I am sure that the way you have responded is quite normal in the rules of a forum like this. However, it is not normal for those of us who aren't familiar with forums and who only encounter them when they have a genuine problem. This is why I hope it is helpful to respond in full.
The reason I posted here is as follows. I was directed here by the apple support website. The original comment seemed to be the only one I could find which referred to my issue. As there is no obvious guidance on how to post on a forum like this it seemed perfectly reasonable to try and join in a conversation which might solve more than one problem at once.
Bee's reply however is both helpful and warm. This could in fact be a template for how new members should be welcomed and inducted into the rules of the forum in a friendly and inclusive way. Thank you very much indeed Bee!

  • I have multiple devices backed up to the same computer each with different data. how do i keep them from syncing all data when i back up or transfer stuff from the computer to a device?

i have multiple devices backed up to the same computer each with different data. how do i keep them from syncing all data when i back up or transfer stuff from the computer to a device? one is an iphone 6 and the others are ipad mini first gens, each ipad has 64gb and the iphone has 128, need to keep the data seperate as they are not all mine

Itunes content and pics are NOT part of the backup that itunes performs.
Backing up, updating, and restoring iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone software
You should transfer any purchases from iphone regularly:  File>Transfer Purchases  , if they fail to be transferred when you sync.
You buy one and only one download.  It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your purchases.
You can try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception, but they are under no obligation to allow.

Actually, I suspect you can't. You get various behaviors based on a combination of settings in Preferences > Interface; namely Open Documents as Tabs and Enable Floating Document Window Docking; but it doesn't seem to make much sense as far as I can tell. Throw in the additional "application frame" wildcard on a Mac, and even just exploring the effects of the settings and drawing conclusions about them gets tricky. It sounds like you've got your windows floating, whereas I suspect many if not most users have opted for the more structured and seemingly more logical tabbed/docked method, in which case they haven't encountered your issue and don't really understand it. One might ask; if your new/current document is "in front" then what difference does it make if others behind it are minimized, maximized, or something in between?

Plus address book will NOT import old address book contacts from Snow Lepoard 10.6 and keep them.  This Lion OXS 7 is .. becoming very frustrating ... it will NOT keep changes made in the Address Book and it has destroyed my contacts which I only have electronically since 10.4 in my address book. Please help!
Wished I NEVER upgraded to this Lion!!!

Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
    Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.

  • Need multiple 'MAIL' Icons.   Have two mail accounts and i want to keep them separate but want to EASILY switch back and forth from the main screen instead of going through, Settings, Mail, and selecting account. Major pain

Have two mail accounts and i want to keep them separate but want to EASILY switch back and forth from the main screen instead of going through, Settings, Mail, and selecting account. Major pain the butt.  This has been a request from Apple users for many years.    it's great you can now combine all emails into one, but some people want them kept separate and have separate icons on the main page.   They could easily do this by having one "MAIL" account as white and another red.  Or put MAIL 1 and MAIL 2.    Or an actual label that the mail accounts are called on the ICONS!!
    Help!

    eshghoolak wrote:
...I could switch back and forth between accounts while in the mailbox, with one button.  I think that is what you are referring to?  Whoever said it's just a simple switching - you obviously haven't had the pleasure of using an Android device.  It's not that quick to go back and forth - definitely not efficient...
Not that it matters a lot, Android vs iPhone interface is largely a matter of personal preference and what you know... I'm not sure which one you're saying is not efficient...
    In any event...
I currently have two email accounts setup.  My iPhone main page Mailbox settings reads:
    Mailboxes
    Inboxes
    All Inboxes
    Gmail
    [email protected]
    Accounts
    Gmail
    [email protected]
I wish there an efficient way to move back and forth while in the "Inbox" between accounts.  Also, Why does one gmail account show as "Gmail" and another as the actually address?
The names are based on the names you gave the accounts when you set them up.
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap the account you want to re-name. Go to the "Description" field and put in what ever you want.
Second, there is no way to quickly choose a bunch of emails to delete. I have to manually go into each one and move it to the Trash folder.
If you tap the edit button in the upper right while in mail, you can select multiple items to move, delete or mark (flag).
I don't want any of the condescending remarks, that I've read here and in other forums.  I'm honestly looking for a solution, which I think you are too!  One thing I realized is that iPhone users in these forums are really defensive and quick to say "that's how it is, live with it, if you don't like it go away"  Um...the only thing that tells me is you are pretty bitter and have kept telling yourself that, to force yourself to like your device.  I prefer to express my issues, and find solutions.  There is ALWAYS a solution...
I think what you will find is that many people here, myself included, tend to get a bit short with people who start off with attacks or whining about how something has been asked for for years and should be easy, rant about things that have already been beaten to death multiple times in the forums, talk about how much better Android or BB are at something (really... if it's that much better, why did they buy an iPhone to begin with?), etc., or continue to ask questions that could easily be answered with a simple search, or even just by looking back at the last dozen posts to the forum, half of which probably asked the EXACT SAME question.
I don't think any of us go out of our way to be rude or uncivil.  That said, attacking the people who are attempting to help you is much more likely to generate a response of 'if you don't like it, go away', than it is to generate something that will be truly helpful.

  • 2 computers at home working with the same files i keep on an external hard drive to free up space the internal drives. I have an airport extreme time capsule to back up both computers. how can i get it to back up the hard drive plugged into time capsual?

I want to run both my macbook pro and imac from a single external hard drive.
i bought a time capsual and set it us as my network and plugged my external hard drive into it. so now both my computers can access it and work on the same image and film files. the time capsual does a lovely job of backing up both my computers and my wifes. but i cant get it to back up the external hard drive that is conected to it. ive looked on the forum and it seems to me that its not possible, which seems odd to me that mac would enable you to plug a hard drive into the time capsual but not let you back it up, what is the point in that!?
so my question is can i back up the external hard drive with time machine, and if not how do i set up my home network so that all my computers can access the same files and time machine will back everything up?
I did the upgrade to maverics on my imac which has caused me a major headache as now all my apature albums have been updated to 3.5.1 but my macbook pro can no longer open them because im unable to upgade it to maverics, but thats another story.
If anyone can help me with my time machine issue i would be very greatful.
    many thanks

The TC for whatever it is promoted as,, is still a simple hard disk in a router. It was designed for laptops to use as a backup. A desktop can use a USB drive, faster cheaper and more reliable than a network drive but the laptops need a network wireless storage. Hence the TC. It is NOT nor was it ever designed to do the job you are trying to use it for.. it is not a NAS.. it has no internal backup.
What is more Time Machine has no ability to backup network drives no matter what their format.
So the solution is to either use a real backup software.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner which can do far more than TM can or ever will. It is around $40 so hardly expensive. But since the TC was never designed for it, this will be slow.. and the next question is where are you going to back to. Using the TC as backup location for your files is less than great. Primarily because all your files are still on the same device albeit on different disk. It is also because mixing data and TM backups is not so great. The TC cannot be partitioned although you can alleviate some of the issues..
    See this info.
    Q3 here http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Let me go back to the question.
so my question is can i back up the external hard drive with time machine, and if not how do i set up my home network so that all my computers can access the same files and time machine will back everything up?
Fundamentally the TC is the wrong place to do this.
The right place is to plug the USB drive into the iMac.. since it is a desktop machine and you are probably not lugging it around. Simply share the USB drive to the network.
The MBP can then access the USB drive, and it will be around twice the speed of networking to the same drive on the TC. TM on the iMac can then also backup the USB drive to the TC as part of the normal TM backups.
The only thing is the iMac needs to be turned on to allow MBP access.

  • Transfer songs and library file from PC to Mac KEEPING them on external drive

I am struggling to find a definitive answer to this. I have all my files stored on an external hard drive on a PC.
I recently got a Macbook and want to transfer all my files to the new Mac.
I know that I will need a new Mac compatible external hard drive and that I will have to copy the files onto the new hard drive.
However I cannot find instructions on doing the transfer to the new Mac that explain doing this AND KEEPING the files on the external drive.
To clarify...I don't want to put them on the new Macs hard drive as I have around 300GB of music, I want to keep them on the external hard drive.
its probably very simple simple but am struggling to get a decent answer. have read loads of stuff that explain moving it to the mac hard drive ...buts thats not what I want to do!
    thanks in advance

See Make a split library portable. A portable library can be stored entirely on an external drive and moved between Mac and Windows computers. iTunes takes a little longer to open the library the first time after each switch. If your drive is currently formatted to NTFS then you will need an additional driver to enable OS X to write to the drive, or simply clone the library to an HFS+ drive.
