HW RAID Config for Oracle DB on Windows

We are currently running Oracle 8.0.5 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server. This is a DELL PowerEdge 6600 server with 8 73GB Ultra SCSI Hard Drives. We will be upgrading to Oracle 9i in the future. Question: What would be the recommended Hardware RAID Configuration? We've heard that RAID 10 would be a good configuration to implement. What would be the best way for us to configure our server? We would like a high fault tolerance, good performance system. Our database isn't very large in size (10GB). By the way, switching to a different operating system is not an option for us.

Hi
In we use 9i on Win 2k3 with RAID5, it is fault tolerance and i think RAID5 is the best configuration for performance and security and fault tolerance. but keep in mind that RAID has the small write penalty.
And it is suggested by many consultants that if you're using RAID you should put the control files and the redo logs on disks outside the RAID array, but this configuration is for very large DBs.
RAID5 is working perfect with me, i have dual XEON 2.4 4 x 15000 x 34 GB SCSI HDD and 4 GB Ram ofcourse our DB is almost 30 GB.

  • How do I set-up on %ORACLE_HOME%\bin for Oracle client on Windows XP

How do I set-up on %ORACLE_HOME%\bin for Oracle client on Windows XP?
The Oracle bin directory is: C:\oracle\ora90\bin
    Thank you!

If you are asking how to setup the resolution of %ORACLE_HOME%\bin to C:\oracle\ora90\bin, you must create a system environment variable called ORACLE_HOME that is set to a value of C:\oracle\ora90.

  • Microsoft ODBC for Oracle on a Windows 7 64Bit OS and Oracle 11g Client

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle 11g client 64Bit edition on a Windows 7 Professional 64Bit OS. Trying to connect to Oracle DB through ODBC Driver I get the following Message:
    Microsoft ODBC for Oracle:
"The Oracle(tm) client and networking components were not found. These components ar supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the Oracle Version 7.3 (or greater) client software installation....".
Any ideas how to resolve that problem?

    Hello,
Please verify the ORACLE_HOME directory is listed on the PATH system variable of Windows 7. Please open the Command Prompt
and examine the result of the command PATH.
    Hope this helps.

  • Optimal NTFS block size for Oracle 11G on Windows 2008 R2 (OLTP)

    Hi All,
We are currently setting up an Oracle 11G instance on a Windows 2008 R2 server and were looking to see if there was an optimal NTFS block size. I've read the following: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/win.112/e10845/specs.htm
But it only mentioned the block sizes that can be used (2k - 16k). And basically what i got out of it, was the different block szes affect the max # of database files possible for each database.
Is there an optimal NTFS block size for Oracle 11G OLTP system on Windows?
    Thanks in advance

Is there an optimal NTFS block size for Oracle 11G OLTP system on Windows?ideally FS block size should be equal to Oracle tablespace block size.
or at least be N times less than Oracle block size.
For example - if Oracle BS=8K then NTFS BS better to be 8K but also can be 4K or 2K.
Also both must be 1 to N times of Disk sector size. Older disks had sectors 512 bytes.
Contemporary HDDs have internal sector size 4K. Usually.

  • Trial Version for Oracle Databse on Window 7

    Hi All,
I am new to oracle and looking for a trial version so I can learn.
currently using window 7.........was wondering if Oracle have any trial verison for the lastest 11g .
I did some research and heard that only 9i have a trial verison- if so where can i find it
    thank you

No version of Oracle is certified on Windows 7. 11g R2 will be the first version of Oracle certified on Windows 7. That is expected some time in the first quarter of 2010. You can (and I have) install 11g R1 on Windows 7 assuming that you ignore the warnings about it being supported. So far, it's worked reasonably well for me, but I wouldn't try to run a production system on it.
I'm not sure what you mean by a "trial version." All Oracle software is freely downloadable from OTN under the OTN license. That probably meets whatever your definition of "trial license" is, but you'll want to read the license agreement for yourself to confirm that. You are free to download 11g R1 from OTN (choose "Download" on the main OTN page) and install that on your Windows 7 machine so long as you agree to and abide by the OTN license.

  • S20 *new* RAID config for retail Windows 7 install...questions

I’ve recently ordered a S20 and I have a few questions about my situation/configuration, if anyone has the knowledge and time, I'd really appreciate it.
I’ve configured the workstation to be shipped without an installed OS, a single SATA hard drive, and no optical drive.  I have a new retail copy of Windows 7 Professional that I will install, two Seagate 1TB SATA hard drives that I will install in RAID1 configuration, and a new DVD multi-recorder ready to install.  The drive that comes with the workstation will be used as well, but not as the boot drive.  I wish to boot off of a partition on the RAID1 set.
I’ve looked into the hardware/user guides for as much information as I could find, but I’m not clear, and thus concerned, as to what I will need to do to get RAID setup with a boot partition and install Windows.
I see that there are three SATA ports for hard drives on the main board.
    1)  Can RAID be configured using ANY combination of these ports, and is the unused port still available for normal SATA drive hosting?
For instance, can I configure two 1TB hard drives on the first two ports and configure a third non-RAID drive on the third port?
I am now familiar with the BIOS RAID configuration utility from reading the guides.
    2)  How do I install an OS (Windows 7 32 or 64) on a new RAID partition, once it is configured, if my retail version of Windows doesn't have the driver?
For instance, can I provide the driver during installation via the Windows 7 setup?
I understand that there are also two SATA ports for optical drives on a separate controller (for five SATA ports total).
    3)  If I attach my DVD drive to one of the SATA ports intended for optical devices, will the system see it as a bootable device?
I need to make my DVD drive a boot device in order to install windows, so I'm hoping that the system will see it that way.  I also hope that the SATA ports are labeled on the main board!  (Optical 0, 1 / Disk 0, 1, 2)  ???
If anyone has the time to help me with these three questions I think I will be more at ease.  I worry about going off the path and ordering a blank machine, but I am adamant about a non-OEM OS.
BTW, I am moving to the S20 from a five year old IntelliStation M Pro which is the best machine I've owned so far.  I also keep a ThinkPad X61 at my side.  Really looking forward to the new workstation!
    Cheers!

    erik, thank you so much.
I was thrown off by the Marvell driver in the S20 download page, I think.  Now I'm ready to go.

  • Best practice for # of drives for Oracle on a Windows 2003 server

I need to know what the best practice is concerning the # of drives that should be built on a Windows 2003 server to ensure best performance and most effective back up and recovery, for both the application itself and the data base.
I'm not certain, but it may be only a 32 bit machine. I'll update this once I know for sure.

We are in the process of migrating our Oracle 10 database (20G) to a new maschine.
How should we configure our disks (8 in total)?
    1. SAME: "Stripe and mirror everything"?
    2. Doc 30286.1 "I/O tuning with different RAID configurations" and 148342.1 "Avoiding I/O disk contention" say:
    database files on RAID01
redo and archive logs on RAID1
    temp on RAID1
So, what is the best practice?

  • Minimal linux config for Oracle

Does anyone aware of documentation of what minimum config. (packages, compilers, kernel versions, etc.) will allow Oracle 8i to install?
And also does anyone aware of a pure command line Oracle install so I can run the process at background.

for suse linux 7.2 you have to have the following(minimum):
    -the linux base system
    -the series d pakages mainly:
    -gcc
    -binutils
    - since there is need to change the kernel parameters for shared memory and semaphores, you will need to install the kernel-source and linux(ie rest of linux sources) as well. if there are some missing packages from above, installing these two will detect any missing packages and all you do is press the key to solve dependencies(F4 I think(??)
    - basic window manager if installing 8i rel 3 (8.17), you have to have the basic x11 capability on your system
I think thats about it. Good luck

  • Symantec antivirus Best practice for oracle database on windows server 2003

    Hi all,
I have an oracle database server on windows server 2003 platform of version 10.2.0.4. what would be best practice of running symantec antivirus on that server as well as database file exclusions from scanning them.
My server had rebooted unexpectedly for many times. in event log i have id as 6008. what may be cause of it..?

Normally, you don't run a virus scanner on a database server because your database server isn't vulnerable to viruses. It's behind firewalls, people aren't reading mail on it, people aren't plugging thumb drives into it, etc. If you do decide that you need to run a virus scanner on a database server, at least exclude the Oracle data files from the scan. Oracle gets very unhappy if someone else tries to open its data files (or, worse, if someone opens a data file before it gets the chance to acquire exclusive access).
