Hybrid flash drive: Bootable Mac, but still readable on Windows. Possible?

I love the idea of having a bootable OS X installation thumb drive, but would also like to use another partition on that same thumb drive to transfer files between Windows machines.
A bootable OS X drive must be partitioned GUID Partition Table (GPT) - but every time I've tried to read a FAT32 partition on that drive under Windows (even if I've wiped the drive, and that's the only partition there), it's failed to even see the drive.  Very frustrating.
It appears that Windows boxes can only see drives with Master Boot Record (MBR) as the partition scheme; GPT completely stymies most such machines (e.g. photo-printing kiosks in drug stores).
So: Is is possible at all to have a single thumb drive with multiple partitions, which contain one partition which is bootable on the Mac, and another partition which can make files visible to Windows machines?

Glad to hear that newer Windows versions don't suffer this limitation - but I have yet to see a Windows machine in common use in the expected environments, which is running anything beyond XP.  Again, my main examples would be photo-printing kiosks in stores, and similar. "Lowest-common-denominator" certainly seems to apply.
And, agreed that flash drives are incredibly cheap - but I really didn't want to carry 2 around, if I could use a single one.  I have been investigating possibly using a dual-sided implementation, such as:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FPYLHY/
I had seen some references to "hybrid MBR" recently, but they were always accompanied with significant caveats regarding reliability.  If you believe this might be worth pursuing, though, I'm game for trying.  Any pointers on step-by-step guides to result in a drive in the form needed?
1) Bootable OS X Lion install/recovery partition
plus
2) General data partition (I do not care about bootabillity into Windows)

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

The 2nd and 3rd gen devices don't store anything except for photos used in the screensaver via home sharing. Even those are temporarily cached, and there is no accessible drive. Photo stream is being accessed directly from the cloud.
The 1st ten had a hard drive, but not meant to be for primary storage (syncing purposes only).
It's always highly recommended to keep regular backups.

  • Best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

format flash drive in Exfat for transferring files between Mac and Pc.
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • USB Flash Drive Bootable?

    Hello everyone,
I have a 1GB USB Flash Drive which I want to boot up from and run Drive Genius.
I made an image copy of leopard and deleted some stuff to make it go under 1GB. I have added the applications I wanted. Everything is good. My question:
How can I make the flash drive bootable?
How can I tell it which application I want it to open on startup?
    Thanks in advance,
    iloveisrael.

Well, I've just tried booting from the USB Drive from the Startup Disk. It restarted the computer and it showed the apple symbol with the circle (meaning that it's loading), but then it would just restart my computer. I didn't see any apple menu, no terminal, no nothing. The problem is, my USB Drive has only 1 GB. However, I can use a DVD (4.7 GB), but I can only write on it once. I can't make mistakes because I don't want to waste them. Do you have any suggestions of how I can boot into an application? What should I erase from the image? What should I not erase? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,
    iloveisrael.
sorry I don't know. you'll have to experiment and see. get a rewritable DVD and go at it.
i have to admit that I don't know how bootability works on DVDs. Normally one has to bless a system folder after you copy a system to a new drive. That's how normal bootable clones are created. However, you can't do it with a regular DVD which is what the leopard install disk is so an entirely different mechanism is used and I don't know what that is at all.
also keep in mind that even if you make it work the chances that your apps will actually run are very slim. most apps are not designed to run like that. they use various frameworks missing from the system on the install DVD.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
    Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.

  • In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro

In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro?

To do what? Yes you can connect a USB flash drive to the system and if it has the Recovery HD files on it you can boot from it. If it has the OS X install files on it you can boot from it. If it is large enough to contain a Time Machine backup on it you can restore your system from it.
So what do you want to do with the USB thumb drive?

  • HT4623 I upgraded my ipad to ios 7 and it's one requesting a passcode  have no idea what it is because I never had a passcode. Tried to connect to iTunes on my mac but still won't work

I upgraded my ipad to ios 7 and now it's asking for a passcode. Have no idea what to enter because I never needed a passcode. Connected it to iTunes on my mac but still doesn't work

    Hi Lmprettyman,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article has more information on passcode lock and how to return your iPod to working order:
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer
If you see one of following alerts, you need to erase the device:
"iTunes could not connect to the [device] because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the [device] before it can be used with iTunes."
"You haven't chosen to have [device] trust this computer"
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • How can I import images from my camera to my external drive instead of Mac, but still use IPhoto?

I would like to preserve space on my new Mac and import photos from my camera to my external drive instead of my Mac, while still being able to use Iphoto. Not sure how to specify this.

Move your Library to the Extnernal Disk -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Then import as normal.
