Hybrid Hard Drives Vs Traditional SATA HDD

Usually I have no problem making comparisons especially with the help of OWC and Crucial's  websites and, of course reading here. But trying to get some kind of data to compare the new Seagate and Toshiba 1.0 TB Hybrid hard drives has been difficult. In the only recent discussion I could find here the OP stated there was only a small difference in price between the SSD and Hybrid which is not true at all when comparing same size drives. SSD above 120GB are simply not affordable. Both Toshiba and Seagate have 1.0 TB Hybrid drives which are huge compared to the 250 GB SATA 5400 RPM HD in my Macbook Model 7,1 and priced at just a bit over $100. True Solid State Drives close to that size are over $600 and traditional SATA 5400 and 7200 RPM around $75.
I don't really need an internal HD that large. I can afford the 120 GB True SSD at $99, but when OWC is making statements like "Solid State Performance" when advertising their Hybrids I have to look at what my money will buy. OWC claims SSD are 30-100X faster than traditional SATA 5400 rotational drives. I don't see any numbers being thrown around about the Hybrids anywhere. Are they twice as fast as what I have? 5X? What exactly does OWC mean by "faster" anyway?
My important data that I can't afford to lose all are documents and PDF files and takes up less than 1 GB of space. This data is backed up at Mozy and on 100 year disks. I also have a 250 GB internal HD that I made into an external and that data is also there and that's where I have a bootable back up clone that I have CCC update every week or so. Mozy updates daily and I make a new CD once a month. Looking at what's on my current in use internal hard drive, I could easily move videos,movies etc. to an external. I could easily get by with 90GB if I did this.
So, I plan on getting a 2 TB external for movies and such. If I get a 120 GB SSD I'd then have 2 250 GB externals to supplement the 2 TB external which is what I'm planning unless someone can tell me the Hybrids are anywhere near the performance of the SSD or greatly out perform what I have now.

I know this is somewhat out of date, However i find it somewhat wrong that no one as even bothered to even say Sod off or Hello.
Anyway your SSDHD are around 4 x to 5 Times faster than a normal HDD.
They will store your data into the Nano Flash and load it as fast as a SSD, Now unless you're doing some High end video editing then the Hybrid is a good option, because if you're just a standard end user then you're not really going to do much data swapping, though high end video editing Then i would go full SSD.

    Brommy, Welcome to the discussion area!
    Don't try to use the software on the disc that came with the AirPort Express (AX).
    Instead use AirPort software already installed in the /Applications/Utilities directory.

  • Hybrid Hard drive for Mac

    Hi,
    I recently read up about some Hybrid Hard Drive. I am wondering, can we replace the HDD I have on my MBP, and replace it with a hybrid one. Will I be able to still install Mac OS X on it and launch faster? In a way like make the OS install on the flash bit.

    Unless Apple specifically makes a note of it on their Leopard preview site, no one can say. People with the developer betas are under a non-disclosure agreement. So, all we know is what Apple makes public. Right now there's no specific mention of support for those kinds of drives.

    From all the articles I have seen, it appears it will only work as a 'normal' hard drive on OS X, without using the benefit of the additional flash memory. At some time in the future, the OS X may be updated to take advantage of the flash memory feature, but that is dependent on Apple's wishes and priorities.

    I read on the Seagate site that the drive would work but that you wouldn't get all of the hybrid functionality you're paying for. (lost the link.... sorry).
    The one I've read about is the Momentus 7200.2 Laptop Hard Drive. Here is a tech article about that:

They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
    would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
    Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.

    I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
    Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
    I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.

    Possible but unlikely. PATA drive remain less expensive in bulk and PATA ->FW enclosures are more mature and wide spread than SATA->FW. Larger drive cap. drives are more likely to be SATA.

    I have a few questions about replacement hard drives for my PowerBook G4 12" 1.0 GHz DVI. (I am also going to upgrade the hard drive in my wife's Powerbook G4 15" 1.33 GHz Combodrive, but I think the questions/answers below will apply to both. I'll just deal with my 12" for ease here.)
    I have read Apple's specifications and searched all over to find detailed information about ATA ratings and compatibility, and I'm still in the dark about a few things. I'm interested in a 160GB or a 250GB internal drive to replace my 80GB (which did come standard as an optional feature, although this is my second 80GB--I burned the first one before my Applecare expired), and I'm looking at the following drives, for instance:

    Questions:
    1. HDD Controller limit to internal drive capacity: I've read that older powerbooks (whatever this means, it wasn't specified) may have a 128GB limit, supposedly meaning that the HDD controller will only recognize 128GB on an internal drive. Anyone know if this is true? How do I find out? It isn't published on Apple's spec page for my machine. And, if such a limit does exist for my machine, can I install a 160 GB and get the full 128GB? (b/c a 120GB will only give me 100+ usable after all.) Will the fact that the drive is lager than the total recognizable amount mess up the cataloging, data retrieval, reliability, stability...?
    2. ATA-100 vs. ATA-6 vs. ATA-7 vs. PATA vs SATA. My present 80GB TOSHIBA MK8025GAS just says ATA in the System Profiler "Protocol" field for the ATA drive. I presume that the SATA is a later, more recent, non-backwards-compatible format/pin configuration/?. I presume the 100 refers to the 100mb/s data transfer rate, which is what the Apple specifications have for my machine. The drives I am looking at, by and large, are rated at 100mb/s. They all have other specifications, however (ATA-6, ATA-7), and I am hoping to hear that they do NOT refer to pin configuration differences.
    -Q- will PATA and SATA drives both fit my machine, or does the "Ultra ATA/100 hard drive" listed in the Apple Specs for my machine mean that the pin configuration/compatibility will only work with PATA drives? Thus, Is Parallel ATA what I have and need?!?! Will a faster SATA drive work in my machine? Would I be able to swap it out into a MacBook Pro when I upgrade next year? (i.e. are SATA drives &/or boards backwards compatible with PATA drives? And are PATA drives &/or boards forward compatible?)
    3. S.M.A.R.T. verification capability. I am unclear as to whether this capability is essential and which drives provide it. Some information states that Hitachi Travelstar drives DO support S.M.A.R.T. verification, but such is not listed on their information about the drives. My present 80GB Toshiba DOES have this capability, so System Profiler says. Before my previous drive failed, SMART notification may have saved me (though it's unclear if it actually made any difference--it's just notification, after all, right?), alerting me that the drive was failing and thus giving me enough time to get the last bit of un-backed-up data off the drive before it died altogether. (This is a presumption based on changing S.M.A.R.T. status notifications in System Profiler and from Disk Utility Repair Disk reports). In fact, however, I don't really know what SMART verification is, and thus I don't know how important it is.
    -Q- How important is S.M.A.R.T. verification capability? And what is it really?
    -Q- which manufactures support it?

    Your Intel-based Mac needs a Serial ATA (SATA) HDD instead of ATA or ultraATA, PATA etc. Not knowing the specs of your IntelMac select your Intel Mac here and navigate to your Model for a list of compatible HDDs.
    I do intend to install them myself. I haven't had this G4 open, but I put 2 HDDs in my previous G3 without issue, so I think I'll brave it, armed with iFixit instructions.
    Since you have done it before, this addition may be superfluous, but here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the correct size Torx screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.

  • Problem with momentus XT ST750LX003 hybrid hard drive in my macbook aluminium 2009

    I have change the hard drive in my macbook aluminium 2009, the new drive is Seagate (Momentus XT ST750LX003) hybrid drive.
    Each time osx turn off the drive all the applications are killed except osx. I have tested 2 different drives and i have the same problem with both.  Seagate do not have anything about this problem. 
    I even turn off the power saving of the computer and the hard drive... but after an hour of inactivity all the apps are killed ( except osx). 
    Anyone can help?

    Mid June 2012 bought a Momentus XT 750 for the just released 15" MBP. It was manufactured in Oct 2011 according to the box and firmware was SM12. I liked the speed and most of the time it would seem to work fine, however there was a problem with corruption of large files - few hundreds of MB and larger. Archives wouldn't unpack properly, md5 hash would report different results, VMware virtual machines (using huge files as virtual drives) would fail randomly.
    It took me a while to narrow it down to the HDD, as this Mac also had freezing issues with graphics drivers (these now seem to be fine with OS 10.8, also upcoming 10.7.5 should help, although pre-11G30 builds were junk). On top of this I installed 16 GB RAM which is not supported by Apple so I wasn't sure what's causing trouble...
    I returned the XT 750 (Best Buy) after reading numerous similar reports on the net and finding that there is no firmware update for this model yet (500 GB version had similar issues which were eventually addressed in firmware). I noticed that they had a new batch of these drives made in April 2012 and the PN was different: 9JB1A1-575 instead of the older drive's -574. However when I unpacked it the label still said SM12 for firmware, so I won't bother installing it and I'll go with a regular 7200 rpm 750 GB drive (got a Hitachi drive) and delay the upgrade for a real SSD when the prices go down.

    I think what is happening is that the kernel does not have the drivers for the IDE controller on the board for the CLE266/VT8235. Does this seem accurrate? And if so, how can I verify the current kernel config, then compile a kernel with everything else Arch needs to boot properly? I am familiar with the old means of setting up a kernel using the 'make menuconfig; make; make modules_install' etc method.

    Hi, not sure if this is still causing you an issue, but I just ran into the same problem.
    For me, I have a Sharp PC=MM1110 which has no cd drive and doesn't like to boot from USB. To get Arch installed on it, I had to attach it to another PC (via it's docking cradle, which lets it show up as a USB hard drive), then boot the other PC from an Arch install cd and select the USB hdd for all of the partitioning etc.
    When I rebooted after the installation, the Sharp wouldn't boot.
    First, I had to edit the grub menu entry to point to (hd0,0), at which point I got the error listed in the first post... Failed to parse block device id's.
    If i booted into fallback mode, it booted without a problem.
    For me, the solution to finally get it working was to boot into fallback mode, remount the filesystem as r/w, and run mkinitcpio -g filename to rebuild the kernel. Once completed all I had to do was point grub to the new kernel image and it booted ok.

  • Hard drive not recognized in HDD bay.

    Randomly, my laptop gave me the spinny pinwheel of death when I opened it, and upon restart, I got the good old folder with a "?" indicating there was no OS. Naturally, I booted up in network recovery, and low and behold, my SSD was not in the Disk utility list. I made an adjustment some time ago where I removed my optical drive, and installed the old HDD that came with the computer in it's place. I switched the drives, so that the SSD was where the optical drive should be, and the HDD in the drive bay. Upon startup, the computer booted up as usual from the SSD, and the HDD was not recognized. So from there I conlcuded that both the SSD and HDD are working correctly without failure. After putting the drives back where they originally were (HHD in optical bay, and SSD in Drive bay), and I booted up holding the option key, The SSD and recovery drive were there, but I received a prohibited sign (circle with slash) after a minute. Now it is not recognizing the drive again. I'm not sure whats going on, anyone hav any input?

    You have a faulty hard drive to logic board cable. Replace that and you should be fine and the drive put in the main bay should show up.

  • Hard drive problems - cant repair HDD

    Hi!
    Ealier today I left my MacBook Pro to download som things while I was going uot for a while. And when I came back and woke up the display it wouldent wake properly. just running the screensaver with the "I'm thinking"-rainbowdisk for a mouse icon for like 5-10min. So I did a hard reset, and started i up again. only to get a grey screen and a flashing folder with a questionmark. So I started searching the Apple support pages, tried reseting the vram (or whats it called (the cmd+opt+r+p reset command)), tried the shift+cmd+v reset command (nothing happened) and lastly tried booting from the installdisk. That worked, but when I first tried to run the "startup disk" the hard drive dosent show. so I ran the disk utility, and found it only showing the DVD-drive. then I ran the systemprofiler to look for the HDD, and found it in the S-ATA folder. so I tried to run the disk utility againg, but still just the DVD-drive showing. then, suddenly, after some random clicking at the different menu buttons, the hard drive is showing. and so I mark it and press verify. it verifies but I still cant press any of the "verify disk premissions", "repair disk permissions", "verify disk" or "repair disk" buttons in the "first aid" window. but I thought maybe the "startup disk" utility now also could see the HDD as disk utility did, but no..
    I'm getting kind of frustrated now, and would appriciate any help I can get!

    This is a "canned" set of directions I wrote, so I realize you've coverd some of it:
    Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > select Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” (good) or something more ominous like “Failing.”
    If S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified," run Repair Disk > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.
    Do you have a backup? Do you have any data that needs to be saved?

    I have a TouchSmart tx2-1275dx and bought a SATA hard drive. Connector pins are same config, but  different connector. Can a SATA be used in place of the old ATA..If so how to connect?  Thanks!

    An adapter for this does exist.
    However I seriousely doubt that you could install it in your notebook whilst
    the adapter is attached.
    Aside from that I couldnt tell you that it would actually work.
    I would suggest buying a PATA drive as it was designed for.
    If you want to check on the adapter, I know that Frys sells them.
