Hyper-V 2012 r2 Clustering issue

Hi All
We have the following issue and I just thought of why this could be happening
We are using a 3 node cluster with a witness disk
The problem is that the nodes in the cluster fail daily and its not a specific node it happens to any of them, but there is always 1 online thou
Here is the specs we are running :
*3 identical high end desktop hardware
*Server 2012 std R2
*ISCSI using free nas OS on a separate physical machine
*Teamed NIC's for Management, Clustering, ISCSI and Migration with weights defined
*9 VM's shared on this cluster between the 3
*The server have the exact same config except for the one server which is also running hyper-v with 1 vm which has our AD on
*Currently there is no backup software running for these VM's
*All the update have been done but no hot-fixes have applied
My theory why the system is crashing is because the 1 Host is running the AD VM on the HyperV which is different setup compared to the other servers.
Could this be the issue ?
Thanks

What does the validation wizard tell you?  The validation wizard should always be the first thing to run when trying to troubleshoot, as it does hundreds of tests on the environment and will alert you to anything it finds wrong or questionable.
Out of the box, it sounds like you are running an unsupported configuration since you state it is configured with "3 identical high end desktop hardware".  One of the basic requirements of clustering is that you use hardware that the manufacturer
has tested for supporting Windows Server 2012 R2.
www.windowsservercatalog.com lists all that hardware.  Since you are using desktops, I feel comfortable in saying that those servers are most likely not on the list.  That is not to say that clustering won't work, but it does mean that you are
running an unsupported configuration.  Since clustering is usually done to provide highly available access to business critical applications, building the environment on unsupported hardware is not a good way to start.  This also means that you might
be using NICs that are not of server quality, meaning that you may be running into networking issues, as suggested by Darren.  Then there is your iSCSI configuration.  The validation wizard will tell you if you have issues with the storage - a free
NAS OS may not provide the features necessary for clustering.  Suggestion is to get proper hardware.  What you are describing might be okay for a learning lab, but not for production.

we have a two node cluster
we have volumes configurred on both the clusters.we are using  EVA san storage.
    Data(C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1)
    Logs(C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2)
i am able to change/move Clustered disk drives from owner node A to Owner node B.I cannot see the clustered drives on both active/passive nodes.
i am also not able to view the volumes on node b in the windows explorer. Can someone please tell me how to look at the volumes once we move between the drives on the cluster.
    Thank you
    lucky

Since you are showing us that you have configured Cluster Shared Volumes, that means there are no volumes to be seen in Windows Explorer.  This is expected behavior.  When you create Cluster Shared Volumes, the cluster software creates reparse
or mount points for the volumes.  That is what the C:\ClusterStorage\Volumex is - it is pointing to the actual volume.  When you want to use storage, you need to point to C:\ClusterStorage\Volumex and whatever subdirectory you create for the location.
CSVs are not meant to be used by all applications.  They were initially designed for Hyper-V.  But that is not how you would set up you cluster if you want to offer a something like a regular file share.

  • 3 Node hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Clustering with Storage spaces on one of the Hyper-V hosts

    Hi,
We have 3x Dell R720s with 5x 600GB 3.5 15K SAS and 128 GB RAM each. Was wondering if I could setup a Fail-over Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clustering with these 3 with the shared storage for the CSV being provided by one of the Hyper-V hosts with storage spaces installed
(Is storage spaces supported on Hyper-V?) Or I can use a 2-Node Failover clustering and the third one as a standalone Hyper-V or Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and storage spaces.
Each Server comes with QP 1G and a DP10G nics so that I can dedicate the 10G nics for iSCSI
Dont have a SAN or a 10G switch so it would be a crossover cable connection between the servers.
Most of the VMs would be Non-HA. Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 would be the only VMS running as HA-VMs. CSV for the Hyper-V Failover cluster would be provided by the storage spaces.

I thought I was tying to do just that with 8x600 GB RAID-10 using the H/W RAID controller (on the 3rd Server) and creating CSVs out of that space so as to provide better storage performance for the HA-VMs.
    1. Storage Server : 8x 600GB RAID-10 (For CSVs to house all HA-VMs running on the other 2 Servers) It may also run some local VMs that have very little disk I/O
    2. Hyper-V-1 : Will act has primary HYPER-V hopst for 2x Exchange and Database Server HA-VMs (the VMDXs would be stored on the Storage Servers CSVs on top of the 8x600GB RAID-10). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
    3. Hyper-V-2 : Will act as a Hyper-V host when the above HA-VMs fail-over to this one (when HYPER-V-1 is down for any reason). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
The single point of failure for the HA-VMs (non HA-VMs are non-HA so its OK if they are down for some time) is the Storage Server. The Exchange servers here are DAG peers to the Exchange Servers at the head office so in case the storage server mainboard
goes down (disk failure is mitigated using RAID, other components such as RAM, mainboard may still go but their % failure is relatively low) the local exchange servers would be down but exchange clients will still be able to do their email related tasks using
    the HO Exchange servers.
Also they are under 4hr mission critical support including entire server replacement within the 4 hour period.
If you're OK with your shared storage being a single point of failure then sure you can proceed the way you've listed. However you'll still route all VM-related I/O over Ethernet which is obviously slower then running VMs from DAS (with or without virtual SAN
LUN-to-LUN replication layer) as DAS has higher bandwidth and smaller latency. Also with your scenario you exclude one host from your hypervisor cluster so running VMs on a pair of hosts instead of three would give you much worse performance and resilience:
with 1 from 3 physical hosts lost cluster would be still operable and with 1 from 2 lost all VMs booted on a single node could give you inadequate performance. So make sure your hosts would be insanely underprovisioned as every single node should be able to
handle ALL workload in case of disaster. Good luck and happy clustering :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • DPM2012 R2 protecting Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster VMs, some appear offline in DPM

    Hello,
We have 2 separate Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clusters using iSCSI SAN CSVs as storage. For these I have set up 2 PSGs for VM backups using checkpoints (As new in DPM 2012R2/Hyper.V 2012 R2)
90% of the VM backups work in online mode but some shows as Offline when running the DPMGuide to add a VM to a PSG.The server OS versions differs between WS2003 R2 SP2/WS2008 SP2 / WS2008 R2 SP1 / WS 2012.
Windows Server Backup is installed on all VMs and vssadmin list writers shows no errors. How can I elaborate and solve this issue?
    Thx /Tony

    Hi Elton,
Thanks for your answer, My comments in bold indent below.
The Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
Installed and enabled on all those VMs
A virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
I know this is a supposed issue, however all other VMs with both Dynamic / Fixed disk VMs
does work. And among these failing we have both dynamic / Fixed disks as well.
A virtual machine has one or more volumes that are based on non-NTFS file systems.
    All Vms has NTFS
In a cluster configuration, the virtual machine Cluster Resource Group is offline.
The Cluster Resource Group is online
A virtual machine is not in a running state.
    All are running
A Shadow Storage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
Interesting, how do I check this in the VM itself ?
    Thx /Tony

    hi Team ,
i recently build 2012 R2 Hyper-v Cluster with three node. Everrything working fine with out any issue . Cluster working also fine. Later i came across one issue when tried to Live migration virtual machine from one host to another . it failed all the time

  • RDS - Issue using Windows 10 build 9926 as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure on Hyper-V 2012 R2

We currently have a production Windows 8.1 as a VDI/RDS on Hyper-V 2012 R2. On testing the last build of Windows 10 (98??) we had no issues deploying this in same RDS as pooled desktops.
The latest build 9926, although correctly sysprep-ed (either by removing AppX modern apps that have been updated, or not connecting the template to the internet), the build is only ever partially successful. Some VMs build others do not, and the ones that
build cannot be managed via RDS/Server Manager, functions such as logging a user off  with server manager, result in an error. (WTS API failed)
Build Error on connection Broker - Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-SessionBroker

Any guidance on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated, although I suspect something regarding the auto-deployment/unattend and management systems though RDS no longer works with the latest Windows 10 build.
    Already posted this in the
Windows Insider Program site, but was asked to re-post here. Thanks

OK, I've carried out some more testing on the client site and have been able to move a couple of existing VMs from their 2008 R2 Hyper-V server to the new 2012 R2 server.
Both VMs are Windows 7 SP1 with the RDP 8.0 update installed and I can connect to them from a Thin Client running RDP 7.1 and a laptop running RDP 8.0.
When I add the RemoteFX vGPU to them both I can still connect from both devices but, as suggested, when connecting from the laptop with RDP 8.0 I don't get the vGPU performance (but the vGPU is still shown in the device manager).
It all looks good at the moment but I'm still concerned as to why I was unable to connect to the first VM I moved over (it was complaining about a error in the License network communication or similar).
I'll keep testing and post anything else that might be useful.
    Cheers for now

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2, integration services issue on multiple VMs

    Hello,
I came to you because we encounter a technical issue on one of our Hyper-V (2012 R2).
Our backup (Veeam backup in last version) are still failing with error :
Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version)
After checking integration service states of those VMs on the Hyper-V, we get this result :

The status is OK, but If I retry my backup I have the same error.
So, is there a way to reinstall integration service component without rebooting ?

    # Processing:
    $VMInfo = @()

  • Virtual Machine Generation 2 Boot Issue!!! (Windows Repair Bootloop! ) Hyper-V 2012 R2

Hello people, I'm having the following with the GEN 2 in Hyper-V 2012 R2.
Issue: After bouncing my GEN2  Hyper-V VM I get this.
Then I get the Windows Repair and nothing happens after this point!
Does someone have experience this issue ?
The bad thing with it is as it's production there's no checkpoints and I cannot recover it!
    Note: this doesn't happens with GEN1 VM's.
Any help will be really appreciated

Hi, thanks for the quick response. Now the images are appearing... oh well...
    Quite familiar to me this one.  I have a couple of, or more, remedies;
1: increase the available memory to at least 4096 - just whilst installing you can alter it later.
2: make sure the enhanced session switches (both in Server and User) in the hyper-v manager are not enabled - you can re-enable them later
3: Disable "Enable Secure Boot" in the VM settings - Firmware - you can enable it after the install
4:  make sure Heartbeat is enabled in the VM's settings - Integration Services
5: Last, but not least, make sure the Smart Paging File Location is the same as the VM's location. Eg: VM: <D:\VMS\Machines> Smart Paging Location: <D:\VMS\Machines>
One or more of these has "always" worked for me in the past.  I don't offer any warranty with these "solutions", but by disabling or enabling the various options I have nearly always been able to get the VM started.
Is the ISO you are utilizing good?  One client of mine assured me he had never touched the ISO saved in that 'special place'.  A quick peer at the files inside the ISO revealed that he had been at the files and changed a minor file and then changed
it back to what he thought it had said...
    Cheers

  • Hyper-v 2012 r2 slow throughputs on network / live migrations

Hi, maybe someone can point me in the right direction, I have 10 servers 5 Dell r210s and 5 Dell R320's, I have basically converted these servers to standalone hyper-v 2012 servers, so there is no clustering on any at the moment.
Each server is configured with 2 1Gb nics teamed via a virtual switch, now when I copt files between server 1 and 2 for example I see 100MBs throughput, but if I copy a file to server 3 at the same time the file copy load splits the 100MBs throughput between
the 2 copy processes. I was under the impression if I copied 2 files to 2 totally different servers the load would basically be split across the 2 nics effectively giving me 2Gbs throughput but this does not seem to be the case. I have played around with tcpip
large send offloads, jumbo packets, disabled vmq on the cards, they are broadcoms. :-(  but it doesn't really seem to make a difference with all of these settings.
The other issue is If I live migrate a 12Gb vm machine running only 2gb ram, effectively just an o/s it takes between 15 to 20 minutes to migrate, I have played around with the advanced settings, smb, compression, tcpip not real game changers, BUT if I shut
town the vm and migrate it, it takes, just under 3 and a half minutes to move across.
I am really stumped here, I am busy in a test phase of hyper-v but cant find any definitive documents relating to this stuff.

    Hi Mark,
The servers (hyper-v 2012 r2) are all basically configured with ssvmm2012R2 where they all have teamed 1Gb pNics, into a virtual switch, then there are vNics for the Vmcloud, live migration etc.  The physical network is 2 Netgear Gs724T switches which
are interlinked and each servers 1st nic is plugged into the switch1 and the second nic is plugged into the switch2.See Below Image)  The hyper-v port is set to independent Hyper-v load balancing.
The R320 servers are running raid 5 sas drives, the R210s have 1Tb drives mirrored.  The servers all are using DAS storage, we have not moved to looking at using iscsi and san is out the question at the moment.
I am currently testing between 2x 320s and 2x R210s, I am not copying data to the vm's yets, I am basically testing the transfer between the actual hosts at the moment by copying a 4Gb file manually, After testing the live migrations I decided to test to
see the transfer rates between the servers first, I have been playing around with the offload settings and rss, what I don't understand is yesterday, the copy between the servers was running up to 228Mbs ie (using both nics) when copying
the file between the servers, and then a few hours later it only was copying at 50/60Mbs, but its now back at 113Mbs seemingly to be only using one nic.
I was under the impression if you copy a file between 2 servers the nicks could use the 2gb bandwidth, but after reading many posts they say only one nic, so how did the copies get up to 2Gb yesterday. Then again if you copy files between 3 servers, then
each copy would use one nic, basically giving you 2Gbs, but this is again not being seen.
    Regards Keith

    Hi Guillaume Pincon,
Please first update both server to latest update and turn off the Windows firewall for narrow down this issue then try build the cluster again, one of the cluster create condition is all the servers should have the same software updates (patches) and service
packs. If all above steps not work please post the second validation error information.

  • Hyper-V 2012 Breaks Ubuntu 10 and 11

    Hi All,
With Hyper-V 2008 R2 installing Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 used to work with no issues. The synthetic network driver worked and was stable.
However, we recently upgraded to a Hyper-V 2012 environment. Upon moving the exsting Ubuntu VMs (versions above) all kernel panic if the Synthetic NIC is loaded. If the legacy NIC is loaded the performance is appalling (pinging local gateway at over
    2000ms).
A fresh install of those OSs also fails, with a kernel panic as soon as you include the synthetic network adapter in the VM profile. The legacy network adapter misbehaves on all of them and is not usable in production.
    Note that Ubuntu 12 and 13 both work 100% fine on both Hyper-V 2008 R2 and Hyper-V 2012.
    Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, 11.10 work 100% fine on Hyper-V 2008 R2, but not on Hyper-V 2012.
We have some clients who need to run Ubuntu 10 or 11 and we have no way of continuing to provide them services using Hyper-V. Does anyone have a solution for this (please only answer if you have a tested solution, we run hundreds of VMs across many operating
systems in clustered and non-clustered environments, so we know what we are doing)?
    Thanks,
    - Will

    Hi,
In Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008R2 with SP1 and Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V supported operating system list, the supported Ubuntu version is 12.04. And it mentions for Ubuntu 12.04 Integration services do not require a
separate installation because they are built-in.
    Integration services here include:
Drivers: IDE, SCSI, networking, and mouse
Services: Time synchronization, operating system shutdown, and heartbeat
Since integration services are built-in from Ubuntu 12.04, so it should also built-in in Ubuntu 13 or later version.
But for previous Ubuntu version, there's no guarantee that it can work with Windows Server 2012. You may contact Ubuntu support to check whether they have some solution or extra driver package to run previous Ubuntu in Windows
    Server 2012.
Thanks for your understanding and support.

  • How do I turn off Hyper-V 2012 server sleep mode?

Just installed Hyper-V 2012 server on a HP ML360 G8. Also installed Corefig 1.1.1. It seems after about 10 minutes if idle time the monitor goes black and the unit goes into sleep or hibernation.  I have used powercfg to set it to the High Performance
power scheme and set screensaver to none in Corefig.
When the monitor goes black, if I move the mouse the sconfig screen, corefig, etc windows do not show until I run the mouse over them. Even then the windows do not 'repaint' until I run the mouse over the whole window or make some kind of key stroke in each
    window.
Worried what this will do to my VMs once I start building them and would like to see the screen at all times.  This is the first 2012 box and I have never had this issue with any of the Core 2008 products.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    “I can't locate the GUI you show, it's Hyper-V 2012 Server,so i can't edit the settings.
Sems like it may be the monitor itself is going to sleep”
The other possible is you don’t have the administrator rights, or your server has got the Power Management, after you configuration the power option, the GPO refresh then

  • Delegate permission on Hyper-V 2012 R2

    Hi
I'm having problem to delegate permission on Hyper-V 2012R2,
Error - " you do not have the required permission to complete this task contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer 'localhost' "
Everything is working great on Hyper-V 2012 (NOT R2).
The steps that i'm doing are:
    1)Using the AzMan.msc i'm opening the 'InitialStore.xml'.
2)in the Role Definition i'm creating new Role Definition.
3)After creating the Role Definition i'm adding the following tasks :
     a. Allow Input to Virtual Machine.
     b.Allow Output from virtual Machine.
     c.Pause and Restart VM
     d.Read Service Configuration
     e.Start VM
     f.Stop VM
     g.View VM Configuration
4)In the Role Assignments I'm creating new group.
5)Adding the user from the AD.
6)Adding the user to Remote Desktop Users in the server management.
As i mentioned in server 2012 (NOT R2) it working great, since i started to install 2012R2 it's stopped working.
    Any idea?

When searching this forum, you will find that issues with AzMan have been previously reported.  The reason is that AzMan for Hyper-V has been deprecated and no longer supports what you are attempting to accomplish.  This is now handled via
    System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

  • VMs on Hyper-V 2012 R2 are shutting down automatically

    Hello Guys!
I'm having a huge problem in my Hyper-V 2012 R2 environment. Yesterday, 9 of 40 VMs were shutdown automatically, and so, caused a downtime problem to my customers in the business hours.
I checked in the Event Viewer (Application / System /  Microsoft - Windows - Hyper) of the Host and VM but I couldn't locate any log related to this unexpected shutdown.
It occurred twice yesterday, the first in the morning and the second in the afternoon. I'm afraid that this issue can happen again. I've tried to locate some logs to identify this problem, but no luck here.
My question: Is there any other place where it can help me in this troubleshooting to find the root cause?
Obs: All the VMs are licensed / activated.
Obs2: The VMs are Win 2008 R2 Std

    Hello Brian!
The customers doesn't have access using the RDP / ICA. The role machines is web servers.
In the VMs I can find only the following log:
    Log Name:      System
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
    Date:          24/06/2014 11:09:04
    Event ID:      41
    Task Category: (63)
    Level:         Critical
    Keywords:      (2)
    User:          SYSTEM
    Computer:      xxx
    Description:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
But on the Host Hyper-V I cannot find any error related to this failure as I described in this thread.

  • Moving VMs From One Hyper-v 2012 R2 to Another Hyper-v 2012 R2

Hi everyone, was hoping for some help in something I am confused about
    Currently I have SERVER1 running hyper-v 2012 R2
I want to move all my VMs (around 20)  to SERVER2 also running Hyper-v 2012 R2
But I am confused on the best way to do this
    1) should I just click on "MOVE" on SERVER1 to move to SERVER2?
    2) Should I do an export and then import
    3) should I setup replication from Server1 to Server2 and then do a failover?
    4) or should I shut the VM down, copy the VHDX file and then create a new VM and use that VHDX
I just want to be cautious and use the best method to ensure it goes smooth and not worry about any corruption. Can anyone offer some advice?
    thanks

It all depends on your environment and your current Hyper-V configuration.
I asume both servers are domain-member of the same domain and don't use SCVMM. If so, then make sure you do the following:
First enable the "Live Migration" feature in the Hyper-V settings on both Hyper-V Servers.
Make sure both Hyper-V Servers have a vSwitch configured with the same display name and connectivity. They must be somewhat identical, but not everything. As long as the connectivity is the same.
Make sure you have a location to store the VM files on SERVER2.
Then do a Live Migration from SERVER1 to SERVER2, follow the wizard. By using the Hyper-V Manager console on SERVER1.
NOTE1: Without computer certificates and Kerberos configuration on your Live Migration settings you cannot initiate a Live Migration from the Hyper-V Manager cconsole on SERVER2. With the default configuration, you have to login on (or connect
to) SERVER1 en then initiate the Live Migration.
NOTE2: If you can't configure the vSwitches the same. Then you have to shut down the VMs and do a Quick Migration. Then re-configure the VM network properties and power on the VMs.
I hope this information will help you goin on. If you need more detailed information use the following link:
