Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Fixed Size VHDX Have VMs Paused Due to Disk Space Shortage

I am running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core).  I have an SSD boot drive and a 10 Tb Storage Space HDD (Double Pairty - RAID6) where all VMs are stored.
I have one VM setup with an expanding VHDX file.  It is setup with thin provisioning for 2 Tb and about 1.5 Tb is currently used.  The VM paused due to physical disk space (SS drive) being low.  I turned off this VM and tried to start a different
VM that has two fixed size VHDX files (also on the SS drive).  This second VM would not start either.  I got the same error message, as occurred on the first VM, about the physical disk space being low.  There was about 10-20 Mb of physical
space left of my SS HDD when these errors occurred.
Given the first VM is setup with an expanding VHDX that makes sense to me that at some point there may not be enough physical disk space for the VM to expand and continue to run.
But given my second VM is using a fixed VHDX it doesn't make sense to me that I cannot get this VM to start.  Even if the Storage Space disk were completely full I would expect this VM to be able to start?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Theokrat

Hi Theokrat,
"The HDD was setup with approximately 5 Tb storage pool as double parity."
"My first VM has a 4 Tb fixed VHDX. Thus there was only about
1 Tb free space left for the second VM."
"And for the VMs I'm asking about I set up those options to point to my HDD which is the D drive."
So, there are two VMs (the first VM has 4TB disk , the
second VM has 1TB disk )and all of the VMs'  files
are stored on the 5TB HDD (the 1TB VHDx is dynamical) .
You turned off the second VM when it was paused due to lacking of disk space (before this the first VM is off ).
When you start the first VM , it still can not start and the error arose again ,right ?
If there is no any other factor led to disk usage increasing , I think the issue might be the startup memory of first VM is larger than or equal to the second VM's .
Please try to check that , if it is true , you can try to set lower memory for the first VM then start it again .
Best Regards
Elton JI

  • How to reduce image size on account of disk space shortage?

I import images from my camera to iPhoto on my MacBook. I want to reduce their size on import because hard disk space on MacBook is limited.
Is there any smart way how to perform it? I have not found any presets on Import dialog to reduce size.

If the photos are important then get an external FW hard drive and move the library to it and operate from there. Delete the library from your MacBook.
Next create a new library on the MB and copy only the photos that you have an immediate need for from the external library with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will copy the metadata, keywords, faces, places, and edited versions between libraries. You will a lean, mean travelin' library for the MB.
You you add photos to the library on the MB while you're on the road you can copy them to the main library in the same manner with iPLM when you get back home.

  • Since moving to a Windows 8 Surface Pro, I have been running out of disk space.

I finally got my library moved to the sdsx card located in d:\.  Now I find that I have a iTunes folder located in the root directory.  C:\iTunes it has in it folders with artists names on them and a itunes library dated 2006.  Can this folder be deleted safely?  I also had a folder in the music folder.  I deleted it and everything seems to be working fine.

    Hey mwiesehan
I would make sure that your library is organized first before you start to delete files. Check out the article below to make sure that you go through those motions first before continuing.

  • Disappearing disk space Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise

I've got an interesting problem with a virtual machine in our VMWare environment.  It is Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise installed.  I started out with a 60GB disk and it started running out of space, so I increased
it in VMWare and extended the partition to 100GB.  Well, that lasted for a bit and so I extended it again.  I've done this 3 or 4 times and now I've got a 160GB disk with about 2-3GB of space remaining (and it started with 10GB remaining).
WinDirStat shows 105GB of <Unknown> space being used, which is probably my issue.  However, I can't determine what this is and it keeps growing like a tapeworm.  The context menu on the <Unknown> files has all the options disabled,
so WinDirStat doesn't appear to have access to whatever the file(s) is/are.  I've performed several chkdsk /f on the C: drive and nothing bad is reported.  I don't have any restore points and am not running VSS (that I'm aware of).  The pagefile
reports as being about 4.9GB, so that's not the issue.  No large files are shown anywhere and my explorer settings are set to show me all files, including system files.
When I try to run WinDirStat with elevated permissions, it hangs and becomes unresponsive.
I've even resorted to running CCleaner to see if it found anything, but it simply found the standard temp files and such...about 1GB.
I'm pulling my hair out...and I don't have much to start with.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Russ

It appears that somehow, Microsoft Fusion Assembly binding logging was turned on and many of the temp folders located at c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\InetCache\IE were filling up with hundreds of thousands of Fusion HTM log files.
This is controlled by an entry in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\ForceLog which was set to 1.  Hopefully, setting it back to zero will fix the issue.  As a result of figuring this out, I have recovered almost 80GB of disk
space occupied by the log files.
I thought WinDirStat would show me what I needed to know, but it turns out TreeSize (which I've used in the past) works much better.

thanks for your suggestion.  that is the same advice that i got from the geek squad at the local apple store.
i did what he instructed but it did not work.  i have since called apple support twice regarding the problem.  they had me start the computer in safe mode, going into the library and deleting a phlist file (i think) do a repair disk permissions, do a repair disk, empty the cache, and finally the last guy told me to unplug the computer from the wall socket and restart.
when i mentioned the advice you and the apple store guy gave me they sort of poo pooed it saying that was done when they did all this other stuff.
i am now waiting for the download to be completed to see if unplugging the computer had any effect.
thanks again for your kindness in answering my concern.

  • I get a error message: All downloads loads and file copies have been paused

I have been trying to download the new 4 upgrade and I been getting this message: All downloads and file copies have been paused. The disk you are attempting to use is full. Remove files and emptying the Recycle Bin will free up additional space. Ok I don't have anyting in my recycle bin. Can someone please help me figure this out!
    Thanks!

Start -> Computer -> C: drive, right click - Properties.
How much free space do you have?
You shold generally have 10%-15% free space on your boot )C:) drive.
If not, you need to clear some space by deleting them/ moving them to other drives.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 creating a new vhdx and copying from a source vhdx will physical file size reduce?

    Hi,
    I'm running Hyper-V 2012 R2 as part of Server 2012 Essentials.
As seems common from other threads I've read I have created an expanding VHDX with a maximum size too large (almost the same size as the physical disc it lives on). Although there is only around 350GB of data in the VHDX, the actual file size is approaching
    900GB on the host.
I'm using the "Add New Virtual Disk" wizard to make a new VHDX to replace this massive file. I want the contents of the old VHDX to be copied to the new one so in the add disk wizard I selected the option to copy the contents of my new disk from
    the original.
So my question is: the source VHDX is 900GB, the data inside the is around 350GB. What size is my new VHDX likely to be? Is it likely to reduce to nearer the actual data size?
I'm asking because I'm currently running this operation to an external USB drive and it's painfully slow - going to take hours to complete. If the size isn't going to reduce I may as well cancel it and look for a better option.
    Any comments appreciated.
    David

I am assuming that you are using dynamic virtual disks for your VHDX (they can be dynamic or fixed).
And, it is usually some type of transaction, backup agent, of the like that causes this type of behavior.  Some action that requires a cache on disk that is later deleted.
There is a shrink action that can be done, but that will not optimize fully.
The way to fully optimize is to mount the old virtual disk and create a new virtual disk and mount it, and then copy the contents from one to the other.  This lays the files out in a nice orderly way, without anything being written to the end of the
virtual disk causing it to expand strangely.
Over time, if you are still using the backup agent (for example) that got you into this situation, you will be there again.

  • Hyper-V 2012 VHDX Fixed Disk creation

I know there is a tool that creates Fixed Size VHD's quickly but I was wondering if there was a tool for creating VHDX quickly. I wanted to create a 5TB VHDX Disk but after several hours its only a small percentage of the way finished. I'd rather
do fixed than dynamic but I'll do dynamic if it means I don't have to let it run for 48 hrs.
    Vincent Sprague

In this case "higher performance" is actually very high performance.
The numbers that I have seen really show no benefit of using a fixed VHDX over the standard VHDX due to the enhancements all the way up the storage and file system stack in Server 2012.  4k blocks, growing in larger chunks, trim, etc.
The numbers show extremely close to native I/O performance.  It is only in very high I/O VMs that I would ever think of doing fixed virtual disks any longer.
But, to answer your question:  No, there is currently no built in way nor third party tool (that i have heard of) that will do what you are looking for.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Problem accessing shared VHDX file

We're in the process of building a greenfield environment based upon a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V virtual infrastructure. A 12 node failover cluster (AD integrated) was build, for now 2 CSV volumes are created. We are now working on a virtual SQL 2012 Failover
Cluster on top of the Hyper-V cluster. First we created a (Gen 2) VM with Windows 2012 R2 installed on it, then we (offline) added a new VHDX file (on the same CSV volume) and in the advanced features, we select 'Enable virtual hard disk sharing'. We boot
the VM, disk manager sees a new disk, trying to initialize the disk and an error states 'The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.'
If we disable the advanced sharing option, the disk is accessible, can be initialized and a volume can be created. Enable the feature again and we are in the same phase as where we need to (again) initialize the disk which is not possible. We have the same
problem with a Gen 1 VM.
The CSV volumes reside on a Dell Equallogic storage and are connected via iSCSI, beta of Dell Hit Kitt is installed on the Dell Blade servers (Hyper-V nodes). The CSV volumes have a 4K blocksize, could this be an issue?

    Hi,
thank you for your fast reply. Please find attached my code where I marked the array creation with green circles and the control part with a red one. I removed all the other stuff and loops which are not relevant here (heart beat loop, value initialization, DMA fifo, etc). The sampling rate should be up to 50kS/s for capturing signals with a frequency of the range of 10 to 500Hz).
    @ Spectre Dave:
I would like to do it in the FPGA because my host part (cRIO PPC) is already overloaded and I had a lot of problems to get it running and save the data to a file with the high sampling rate (50kS/s). I was thinking that simple array functions would be an easy thing for an FPGA. Or am I wrong??
Please let me know if you have any idea or if you need more information.
Thank you very much and best regards

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 generation 2 VM corrupted system partition after restart

    Hi
We have a cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V feature.
One VM that has Windows 2012 R2 Standard OS installed (generation 2) was corrupted via restart.
VM has 3 virtual disks (VHDX) - first for system (dynamic size), second for SQL_data (fixed size) , third for SQL_logs (fixed size)
Yesterday, I restarted VM and VM didn't come up, I got error
    - 'Boot Failed. Windows Boot Manager'
    - 'Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device'
Looked all three VHDX we noticed that the first one (system) was corrupted - partition and MBR are gone inside VHDX.
Second and third one are OK, we can mount them and access all data on it.
It looks like on first VHDX (system with SQL 2014 installed) partition was corrupted, so we can't do repair because it's says unknown partition.
There were no updates applied to VM, corrupted partition is 40GB size (dynamical) with 18GB of data used.
This is first generation 2 VM that we have, all others are generation 1 without any problems.
Can anyone please explain us, how can this happened, since we did nothing inside VM, also cluster reports no errors, checking VHDX looks fine, just partition inside got corrupted.
We like to find out what happened, before we deploy more Win2012 R2 VM (gen2) in production envirionment.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi Mike ,
" The most common causes of data corruption in the VHD file are from:
Data corruption due to faulty / failing physical storage
Data corruption due to transferring files over faulty / failing networks

  • Whether Hyper-V 2012 will support Thin provisioning ?

    Hi All,
I am installing windows server 2012 in Hyper V as a VM using iso images.... While creating new virtual machine in Hyper-V I am not able to see any options like "Thin Provisioning"... In Hyper V how thin provisioning will
work and how to enable it?
I install one Server 2012 in Hyper V--> It display harddisk type as "xxxx.vhdx"
Note:In Vmware the thin provisioning option is available while creating virtual machines.
    Thanks,
    Rajarajan.D

    Hello,
I hope you have a great day.
Creating the VHDX file as dynamically expanding, is the VMware equivalent to thin provisioning.
Example: Create dynamically vhdx with size of 100 GB and install Server 2012 OS. The Guest OS will see drive capacity as 100GB however the actual vhdx file would only consume about 15 - 30GB physical hard disk space depending on the features/roles you
    install in the OS.
Creating a 100GB Fixed VHDX would consume 100GB of physical hard disk space.
