Hyper-V 2012 R2 Gen 2 VM failed to boot from SCSI DVD drive using ISO image file

Hello:
I'm having a problem trying to install Windows 8.1 Professional on a new Gen 2 VM. I created a new Gen 2 VM using Hyper-V Manager running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and then told it to boot off DVD drive which pionts to the ISO file that I copied to the E:
drive.  The ISO file mounted in the virtual DVD drive is the Windows 8.1 Professional x64 VL ISO that I downloaded off of TechNet. When I start up the VM to install the OS, I receive this error:
"Synthetic SCSI Controller (Instance ID 7512B228-F7BC-4DD8-B4F4-72A5B042C2E9): Failed to Power on with Error 'The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.' (0x80070570). (Virtual machine ID 4195A398-3531-4A34-8588-D1FC3F3DD2D4)"
Basically the SCSI controller can't read the ISO file. However, the IDE controller on a Gen1 VM can read and boot from the ISO just fine. Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there a way to resolve this issue and allow me to boot the ISO from a SCSI
controller?
Or is there a bug with the Hyper-V SCSI controller that makes it unable to boot from ISOs properly?
-JP

Hi JP,
In addition , please try  :
1. copy the ISO to an not shared local folder or drive
2. uncheck the   "enable secure boot" in VM settings .
If the issue still persists , maybe you can try to down load a new ISO file then try to boot again .
Hope it helps

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

  • IMac fails to boot from DVD

I want to repair my HD, but my iMac fails to boot from either the Leopard install DVD or the original install CD for OS X. What can I do?

    Gary:
Thanks for your reply.  How and what with both installers:  I hold down the "C" key until the Apple logo appears. The only thing that happenshat happens is that the little "sunball" spins interminably.  I waited at least 10 minutes before deciding that it was hopeless.
I hear ya regarding the external HD but unfortunately don't have one.   Mario

  • Hyper-V 2012 Gen 2 VM SCSI DVD device fails to boot from iso files

I am running Server 2012 R2 in Hyper-V Server role for my home lab. I am trying to create a gen 2 vm, with Server 2012 R2 iso loaded in the SCSI DVD device, but every time I try to start the vm it fails to start with the following error:
This is the current settings for the vm:
This error occurs with any iso file loaded into the SCSI DVD device, and the error occurs even if creating a new vm from scratch. I have seen several similar gen 2 vm boot issues posted, but none with the exact issue that I'm having. The iso files all
work fine when creating a gen 1 vm.

    Hi Kaedron,
Maybe the UEFI files is broken and you need to download a new ISO to retry .
Here is a download link for windows server 2012 R2 evaluation :

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 roles, access denied, failed to connect to service, AzMan....

    Hi All,
I have followed dozens of tutorials to set up roles for Hyper-V, but I keep coming up short. I have no problem managing the five domain-joined 2012 R2 Core Hyper-V servers we have remotely from my Windows 8.1 PC, but I have a lab box I would like to grant
specific permissions to some Help Desk users on.
The key tutorial I have followed is from John Howard (http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2008/04/01/part-4-domain-joined-environment-hyper-v-remote-management-you-do-not-have-the-requested-permission-to-complete-this-task-contact-the-administrator-of-the-authorization-policy-for-the-computer-computername.aspx),
but it still does not allow a non-admin account to use Hyper-V Manager remotely. Without his tutorial, I get access denied with my "TestUser" account. After following his steps, Hyper-V Manager appears to connect to the server, but says "The
Virtual Machine Management service is not available." Even using his HVRemote with the /show flag, everything shows as PASSED.
Digging deeper, I see dozens of failed audit Event Viewer logs saying "TestUser" is requesting READ to Service Control Manager. That sent me searching, and I found
    http://arnoutboer.nl/weblog/?p=300 and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa374928(v=vs.85).aspx.
After granting "AU" (Authenticated Users) every permission resembling "read", Hyper-V Manager now shows "There are no virtual machines to show" (or something along those lines); even though I know there are about 30 VMs on this
host. I try to create a new VM (out of curiosity, and now that those options actually appear), and I get permission denied immediately after the create VM wizard pops up.
Why is this such a convoluted process? I would appreciate any help creating Roles for Hyper-V 2012.
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi Eric (cool name BTW!)
Putting them in Hyper-V Administrators is definitely not an option.
I absolutely believe Microsoft would do something to push you into buying their software; just as we had to purchase Windows 8.1 Pro to remotely manage our 2012 R2 servers. However, as far as I am seeing, AzMan is still in 2012 R2. Whether it works or not
is another story, but AzMan.msc is still there and I can run it on any of our 2012 R2 GUI installs.
    Actually just found this:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303411.aspx. According to that, it has not yet been removed, but it has been deprecated. From what I am seeing, the Hyper-V portion of it is definitely broken.
I will look into the remote endpoints solution you mentioned. Thank you for the suggestion. I just recently took the plunge into learning C++, so maybe a Hyper-V manager of sorts will be an app to
    attempt to write, haha.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 creating a new vhdx and copying from a source vhdx will physical file size reduce?

    Hi,
    I'm running Hyper-V 2012 R2 as part of Server 2012 Essentials.
As seems common from other threads I've read I have created an expanding VHDX with a maximum size too large (almost the same size as the physical disc it lives on). Although there is only around 350GB of data in the VHDX, the actual file size is approaching
    900GB on the host.
I'm using the "Add New Virtual Disk" wizard to make a new VHDX to replace this massive file. I want the contents of the old VHDX to be copied to the new one so in the add disk wizard I selected the option to copy the contents of my new disk from
    the original.
So my question is: the source VHDX is 900GB, the data inside the is around 350GB. What size is my new VHDX likely to be? Is it likely to reduce to nearer the actual data size?
I'm asking because I'm currently running this operation to an external USB drive and it's painfully slow - going to take hours to complete. If the size isn't going to reduce I may as well cancel it and look for a better option.
    Any comments appreciated.
    David

I am assuming that you are using dynamic virtual disks for your VHDX (they can be dynamic or fixed).
And, it is usually some type of transaction, backup agent, of the like that causes this type of behavior.  Some action that requires a cache on disk that is later deleted.
There is a shrink action that can be done, but that will not optimize fully.
The way to fully optimize is to mount the old virtual disk and create a new virtual disk and mount it, and then copy the contents from one to the other.  This lays the files out in a nice orderly way, without anything being written to the end of the
virtual disk causing it to expand strangely.
Over time, if you are still using the backup agent (for example) that got you into this situation, you will be there again.

  • Windows 7 fail to restore from hp dvds when almost finished.

I have a windows 7 computer that was compromised by virus then viruses, then the viruses removed themselves.
As such, the compouter was considered compromised including any recover partitions.
    So,,,
    backup data
I order recover cds from HP, paying money for them.
I turn on computer , press F9  choose to boot from dvd drive .
Follow instructions to erase computer, and reinstall OS.
    put in all 3 discs.
It formats hdd, copys files to drive, reboots a number of times during process  like it is susposed to
Then it says install failed withthe following details
NOTE- The WIFI on the computer was turned off prior to the reinstall., I saw some mentions of this being a problem with hp for some reason.. But the wifi light is on after install progresses a little..
I looked at the following log file and the main stuff I saw failing was extra  - usless applications
When it fail, no options to access windows, just retry. That is pretty usless since retrying the same thing usually gives the same result.
The system also PASSED all the hp system tests  - memory, hdd....
It appears to be poorly designed HP restore disc.
for it to actually be failing because a drive ir not active then the os is installing???  Or one of the bloat ware programs did not install?????
Right now the computer is a paper weight.
The virus was better than the hprestore dvd.
I will be contacting Costco ( place of purchase) on this in a few days. Maybe they have some pull with HP

Your problem is not the same one I have.
there three discs in the restore process, and to be clear so you do not misunderstand
when the restore process finishes with EACH and every discs, it EJECTS it IMMEDIATELY.
And since this is a laptop computer, the drives can only be physically closed.
On an different note for anyone else  for someone with experiance with my problem,
during the restore process the only real option is to skip the supplemental disc. _______Same result.
I changed the computer date to 2012 ._____ same result
Just before it reboots the final time, after it installs the system drivers, you can see there is a windows desktop screen including an icon for the sample/test drive Office 2010
After it fails, I run a program to look at the partitions of the 750gb drive,
these some small ones ( one or two 5 gig or less)
A 70gb partition that looks like normal windows partition.
and 670 gb FREE unallacated as a partition.
So either the software automatically deleated the real windows partition when a "failed install" is detected
Or the HP factory created restore discs are improperly coded
The invoice did state "hp Costco restore" discs.
Which leads me to understand there is something different about Costco restore discs. That would increase the changes of a alternate variation with less persons buying the restore discs could  actually be  nonfunctional and not noticed .

  • Macbook 2012 not booting from internal drive but booting from external usb drive

    hi everyone!!
    here is what happened:
i have worked all day on my macbook pro, normally. when i got home and turned it on (i always power it off for rolling with it) it just didn't load the OS.
i run mavericks on a i7 mid 2012 macbook pro 13". it had an accident on last december and fell on the ground, but i've changed the hdd and it worked normally until last week when this happened.
i have a copy of my system on a usb drive and tried to start up from it and it worked.
i took my hdd from inside the lap top and started from it (yes, the same hard disk that was inside the machine) and it worked.
i took the macbook to an apple store and the "apple genius" that was there started up my machine from inside with another hdd running yosemite that they have in the store for testing.
today i bought a new hdd and put it in. but i can't format it or install the system. i had these 2 errors on disk utility
"partition failed with the error: wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed"
    and
"restore failure an error (32) occurred while copying. (broken pipe)
    so:
it loads from my internal drive, but only when its connected via usb
it loaded the apple store drive internally
it does not format my new drive nor install the system on it
ANY suggestions, please??? it's really difficult to me to solve this problem...
    thanks a lot!!!

Must be a bad SATA cable undetected by Apple Techs. A result of the drop but they are also quite fragile.
Disturbing the cable can cause it to work for a while. Cheap repair at iFixIt.

  • 27" (Late 2012) iMac won't boot from any external drives.

I just got my 27" iMac (late 2012) with Fusion Drive. I can't get it to boot off any my external LaCie drive. I just get an "Ø" symbol. tried this so far:
Ensured the OS on my external drive is 10.8.2 - didn't help.
Updated (reinstalled) Mountain Lion on the external drive, using the Recovery HD that comes with the iMac, just in case it's a "special verision". - didn't help.
    Connected via Thunderbolt-to-FireWire 800 adaptor - didn't help.
Connected via USB2 port on HDD to USB3 port on iMac - didn't help.
Used "Startup Disk" system prefs - didn't help.
Used "hold doen ALT key" after startup chime. Can see the drive but - didn't help.
So - has anyone had any luck booting a new iMac off an external device at all?
I might try a Carbon Copy Clone of the Fusion Drive - but I'm thinking it's a waste of time - instinct tells me it's a Firmware limitationin the machine that prevents booting from externals.

trying a clone after all due to this discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/20938457#20938457

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster - Drain Roles / Fail Roles Back

    Hi all,
In the past when I've needed to apply windows updates to my 3 Hyper-V cluster nodes I used to make a note of which VM's were running on each node, then I'd live migrate them to one of the other cluster nodes before pausing the node I need to work on and
carry out the updates, once I finished installing the updates I'd then simply resume the node and live migrate the VM's back to their original node.
Having recently upgraded my nodes to Windows 2012 R2 I decided to use the new functionality in Failover Cluster Manager where you can pause & drain a node of its roles, perform the updates/maintenance, and then resume & fail roles back to the node,
unfortunately this didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped, for some reason it seems like the drain/fail back decided to be cumulative rather than one off jobs per-node ... hard to explain, hopefully the following will be clear enough if the formatting survives:
    1. Beginning State:
    Hyper1     Hyper2     Hyper3
    VM01        VM04       VM07
    VM02        VM05       VM08
    VM03        VM06       VM09
    2. Drain Hyper1:
    Hyper1     Hyper2     Hyper3
                    VM04       VM01
                    VM05       VM02
                    VM06       VM03
                                   VM07
                                   VM08
                                   VM09
    3. Fail Roles Back:
    Hyper1     Hyper2     Hyper3
    VM01        VM04       VM07
    VM02        VM05       VM08

Step 8 was a rather hairy moment, although I was pleased to see my cluster hardware capacity planning rubber stamped, good to know that if I were ever to loose 2 out of 3 nodes everything would keep ticking over!
So, I'm back to the old ways of doing things for now, has anyone else experienced this strange behaviour?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

  • When importing files from desktop to laptop using home sharing, files fail to copy "An unexpected error occured (-50)"

So I'm trying to copy my library from my desktop computer to my laptop. I'm using the import feature when browsing the other library through Home Sharing. Some files wil copy, anywhere from 6-150 songs then it will fail. I have 6000 songs to copy, so I really don't want to babysit my way through this. I'm having to use my wireless network (no external drive available), but it is pretty sturdy. It hasn't been giving me any grief to stream the music, just to copy Is there any fix for this?

The following comes from the LaCie web site but is applicable to any other external drives whether home brew or commercial.
Getting error -50 when copying data in OS X.
Some drives ship out formatted FAT32 so they will be ready to use on either a Mac or a PC. If you are getting error -50 when copying to a drive formatted for PC, it is because of the following:
Certain characters that can be used in a Mac OS X filename are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. This can prevent the file from being copied, and can occur when a filename contains non-printing ASCII characters, or any of these characters: ? / \ < > " | > *.
Either copy the data off of the drive and use Apple's Disk Utility to erase the drive in Mac OS Extended format, or change the filenames of the documents that cannot be copied.

If we reboot the quest domains now, it works.
It seems the disks are not ready at the
    time the guest domains boot.
We see this on systems with many guest domains.
Is there any logfile, where we could find the reason for this?
Or is this a known issue?

Press F12 on boot to choose CD/DVD as a temporary boot device.
My hunch is that there's something wrong with the SSD itself, though.
    Good luck.

  • Working windows install on ssd but fails to boot when old hdd is removed

I bought a Samsung 840 ssd for my Thinkpad T510 to use as my primary hdd and an Ultrabay Sata adapter to mount an additional hdd. I clean installed Windows 7 64 bit on the ssd . Previously I was using 32 bit Windows but I because I also upgraded to 8 gb ram I needed to switch to 64 bit. I used the Windows USB DVD tool to create a bootable USB to install Windows from.
Everything went fine. Because I have two hdds both running windows, when I boot the computer it prompts me to pick which Windows 7 to run. Both run fine. However, and this is the problem I need help with, when I remove the original hdd leaving only the Samsung ssd the computer won't boot - it says no valid operating system.
I tried updating the BIOS but that didn't help.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!*
*Update: I used EasyBCD to copy the boot file to the ssd. Now I am able to boot fine on the ssd with the old hdd removed. So it would seem as if not having the boot file on the ssd was the problem. Still, when I boot up, I'm prompted to pick between booting Windows 7 (new ssd) and Windows 7 (old hdd thats no longer connected). Obviously if I pick the latter it fails to boot. If I pick the former it works fine (problem solved!), but I'd like to be able to skip this prompt  when I turn on my comp. Any ideas?
Also, I'm curious why the boot file wasn't on the ssd already once I installed windows 7 on that drive. Is it because the old hdd was still physically connected while windows was installing? If re-installing windows on the ssd without any other drives present would likely make all these problems go away I'm inclined to just do that, but does anyone know for a fact why this would be necessary?
    Thanks!!

I have had similar issues in the past, but it was nothing to do with the T510. It is solely a windows issue. It is happening because , with both the drives installed the system can "see" the modified boot file. When you take out the ultrabay hard drive the system can no longer see the boot file, hence no valis operating system.
For me to fix it in the past, was a bit of mucking around. First off see if you can download "vistaboot" pro v3.3. With that you should be able to copy the bootfile to the SSD. If you can't do that you'll probably have to use a Windows install disk, booting from the DVD drive, wait till it loads up, select keyboard info, and at the next screen choose "start up repair" .
Sad to say, even that is not a guaranteed fix; it failed for me last Friday and I had to do a fresh install. If you don't have a Windows DVD, google for X17-59465 or GSP1RMCULXFRER_EN_DVD. They are the latest version of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. You should find valid, and legal, download links at digitalriver, the official microsoft site and they most likely be posted somewhere on the mydigitallife forums.
    Have fun !!
