Hyper-V 2012 R2 HOST hard drive limit

Is there a limit to the size of the HOST hard drive?
I recently loaded Hyper-V on a server with a 2500GB hard drive array.  I did not notice till it was too late (server already in production with Guests) that the install created a 2047 GB partition and left 466 GB 'unallocated'.
Is there a 2 TB limit on the HOST?

Milos,
I am afraid I am not able to figure this out.
I really want my server to use the whole disk as "C".
How do I create the full 2.5 TB disk?
I have tried playing with diskpart but either Hyper-V 2012 R2 will not install to the disk or it over rides the GPT setting and returns it to MBR.

  • Bitlocker within Virtual Machines on Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host

I'm just trying to get a definitive answer to the question of can we enable Bitlocker encryption within a VM that's housed on a hyper-V 2012 R2 host?
Some posts I've seen say it can be done and detail the steps, but others suggest that you can only use Bitlocker on data drives within the VM and not boot drives.
Can anyone please clarify the situation for me?
    Cheers for now
    Russell

Bitlocker is not supported inside VMs. That is due to the fact that TPM chips cannot be passed through into VMs.
It does however not mean, that BL won't work. You cannot use netunlock as it needs a tpm - correct. But you can use startup keys (emulated floppy disks) that provide the key so you have a hands-free reboot.
Like this: add a floppy image to your vm. Format that floppy. Tell Bitlocker to use additional startup keys and not require a tpm. Than, enable Bitlocker:
    manage-bde -on c: -sk a:
[will write a startup key to that virtual floppy].
I've just been looking at the BitLocker documentation and was wondering if I can use the ADaccountorgroup protector instead of the virtual floppy drive, as suggested by the text below (from TechNet):-
An alternative to the startup key protector on non-TPM hardware is to use a password and an
ADaccountorgroup protector to protect the operating system volume. In this scenario, you would add the protectors first.  This is done with the command:
    manage-bde -protectors -add C: -pw -sid <user or group>
This command will require you to enter and then confirm the password protector before adding them to the volume.  With the protectors enabled on the volume, you can then turn BitLocker on.
I assume that as long as the AD Group or User is present, the volume can be unlocked?
    Cheers for now

  • Mount host hard drive in Arch VM

i've got archlinux installed in a virtual machine with vmware workstation 8 hosted on win7.
the open vmware tools for archlinux aren't working.
Is there any alternative way of mounting the host hard drives in the virtual machine?
now i access them with samba.. :S

You may be able to add a 'passthrough' device.  I think Workstation can do that.  But I have only used passthrough when the entire hdd was otherwise idle (none of the partitions were mounted by the host OS).

    i buy the new imac,late 2012 with a hard-drive 3TB and i want to change with another hard-drive 1TB....where i can buy?

It's also much more difficult to install third-party hard drives in current or recent Macs than it was. See:
    http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-im acs
The 2012 iMacs are also in essence glued together and very difficult to disassemble and reassemble. The bottom line is: don't try it.
Why, if I may ask, would you want to remove the 3TB drive and replace it with a 1TB drive? What is it you hope to achieve even if it were possible?

  • 2012 Macbook Pro Hard drive failure

I have a 13" MBP purchased in September 2012 with a 750GB hard drive. A few weeks ago I noticed it running slower than usual and sometimes it wouldn't boot correctly, throwing up the folder question mark or the circle strike through symbol at the boot screen, so I went to the Apple Store. The genius ran some test on it to see if the drive was working properly and it wouldn't even complete the test. He told me it would be about $185 to replace the hard drive, including labor, but I've had this computer for barely a year and a half (my first mac) and I find it really hard to believe that just some basic student use and mild gaming (The Sims 3) would cause a hard drive to fail after just barely a year. I've read other posts about hard drive failure for the same year MBP's so my question is, how common is this and why isn't Apple doing something about it? I've also seen people who post about replacing the drive and finding out its the SATA cable or the PRAM or something else. How much should I trust this genius from Apple, and what should I do to find out if it really is the hard drive, because almost $200 is a little much for a struggling student to pay to replace this laptop that I spent $1700 buying a year and a half ago and the guy's explaination of "its like a tire, it happens" just doesn't fly with me. Help?

Thirty percent of HDDs fail within 3 years. Your case is not uncommon. Furthermore, Apple does not make hard drives. They purchase them from hard drive mfgrs. So, why would this be Apple's fault? Despite what you would prefer to believe, it does happen. Pay the money and replace the drive or just sit there and curse your computer for no longer working because you think someone is out for your money and lying to you.

  • Current best practice for Time service settings for Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host and guest OS's

I am trying to find out what the current best practice is for Time service settings in a Hyper-V 2012 environment. I find conflicting information. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have found some different sources (links below) but again the
    are not consistent. Thanks
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/11/19/time-synchronization-in-hyper-v.aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/virtual_active_directory_domain_controller_virtualization_hyperv(v=ws.10).aspx
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12709.time-services-for-a-domain-controller-on-hyper-v.aspx

From the first link provided by Brian, it does state that the time service should be off, but then the update changes that statement.  Still best to rely on the first link in the OP - it was written by the guy that has been responsible for much of what
gets coded into Hyper-V, starting from before there ever was a Hyper-V.  I'd say that's a pretty reliable source.
    Time service
For virtual machines that are configured as domain controllers, it is recommended that you disable time synchronization between the host system and guest operating system acting as a domain controller. This enables your guest domain controller to synchronize
    time from the domain hierarchy.
To disable the Hyper-V time synchronization provider, shut down the VM and clear the Time synchronization check box under Integration Services.
    Note
This guidance has been recently updated to reflect the current recommendation to synchronize time for the guest domain controller from only the domain hierarchy, rather than the previous recommendation to partially disable time synchronization between the
host system and guest domain controller.

  • TiBook 1Ghz -- Maximum internal hard drive limit?

Looking for a definitive answer to the question of hard drive capacity limitations in the TiBook --
I have the last of the mighty TiBooks -- a 1Ghz, 15". I want to replace the internal hard drive. Is there a limit to the drive capacity I can use and access in this PowerBook? Is it the 120 GB limit that affects most older Macs, or can I put a 160 GB (looking at WD Scorpio...Circuit City $79!) and be able to access the whole thing?
If anyone has the answer, has experience doing this or can point me to the KB documents, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The Drive Compatibility Database at xlr8yourmac.com contains four reports of successful installation of 160GB drives in 1GHz Titanium Powerbooks. There are no reports of unsuccessful installations in that model. There are no reports at all of 160GB drive installations in the 867MHz Tibook, successful or otherwise. There are also no reports of 160GB drive installations in earlier Tibook models (800MHz and slower), successful or otherwise. Previous posts in the Tibook forums have reported the earlier models' inability to "see" more than 127GB of a 160GB drive, no matter how it has been formatted or prepared.
Thus, Hardy Geer's report (above) about the 1GHz Tibook is quadruply confirmed, and whether or not the simultaneously-produced 867MHz Tibook can use 160GB drives remains uncertain.
To find the four reports, I searched the database for Powerbook G4s running OS X 10.3 and 10.4 in which hard drives manufactured by Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung, all of whom make 160GB drives, had been installed. Then I scanned all the reports that came up, to determine which PB G4 model each report concerned.
There were many more reports of successful 160GB drive installations in Aluminum PB G4s, including at least one in the original 1GHz 17" Albook introduced in January 2003 - the same time as the 867MHz 12" Albook. Though Albooks aren't my specialty, I suspect this indicates that all Albooks can use 160GB drives, and perhaps larger ones. There was only one report of the installation of Western Digital's recently-introduced 250GB IDE drive (the only one bigger than 160GB currently on the market) in a Powerbook, and that was in a late-model 1.67GHz Albook.

  • B&W G-3  Hard Drive Limit??

I put a new 250 gig drive in a B&W G-3. It only sees 128 gig of that. Now I remember reading somewhere that these machines have a 128 limit. Is that right.
If I put an ata PCI card in there would I be able to access all 250gig??
    thanks, steve

    Don,
Thanx 4 your indulgence. I am with you so far. We are getting closer to the kernel of information that can be memorized and universally applied.
The 128GB limit is a hardware-based drive size limit - that's the biggest drive an ATA/66 controller can 'see'. A drive larger than that will be seen as being only 128GB.
    Is there a chart of ATA controller generations? /16; /33; /66; /100; ...
This search points to an article on "How to Differentiate Between [G4] Models, including an ATA/66 bus and an ATA/100 bus.
I have forgotten if I have seen a chart of the generations and limits.
The article "Macintosh: Using 128 GB or Larger ATA Hard Drives" states:
"There are two primary requirements that must be met for higher capacity hard drives to be fully utilized within a computer. 1. The computer must have Mac OS X 10.2 or later. and 2. The computer must provide support for the drives via the BootROM."
"Once formatted [using 10.2 or later], the drive will be recognized under the version of Mac OS 9.2.2 that comes with the Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) and later products."
"The BootROM of Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors), Xserve, Power Mac G5, and any other model introduced after June 2002 can accommodate these larger drives."
    To summarize for larger drives
    No computers prior to June 2002 can see more than 128 GB of any drive;
    and
Any CPU post June 2002 that is asked to boot into OS 9, must first be formatted with 10.2 or later and the boot volume must be less than 200 GB
    Would that be over simplifying?

  • MacBook Pro 2012. Replaced hard drive yesterday by apple. Went home working and now it turns off and won't come back on till I plug it in... Help!

Have had a ton of issues with my Mac. Went to the apple store in march and they said my processor could be going bad and they basically did nothing. Yesterday I was using my computer put it to sleep. 10 minutes later I opened it up and it completely crashed. Drove 2 hours to get to apple because I am away at school and need my computer for finals. They replaced my hard drive and it was working perfectly fine till today. Now it turns on and works and then shuts off and it won't come back on till I plug it in. It's completely charged and I need it for my classes. I have apple care but I can't keep driving back to apple every day. I have a apple appointment tomorrow but this is ridiculous. Has anyone had any of these issues? What's it going to take for them to replace my computer I can't even live a day without it right now. And by the way. I could not even get any of my data off my old hard drive. So basically nothing is on this computer right now.

Let them know how this is inconveniencing you.  For a replacement, I believe Apples general rule of thumb is if it comes in for the 3rd time for the same issue they will replace it, but it may vary by store.  It cant hurt to ask for a replacement.

  • 2008 MacBook aluminium (not pro) hard drive limit?

I want to put this hard drive in will it work http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-750GB-Momentus-Serial-Hybrid/dp/B0068QO82G/ref=c m_rdp_product. I upgraded the ram to 4gb not long ago either aim also running on Lion?

    Kimako,
if you’re able to partition it externally, but you’re not able to partition it internally, then there might be an issue with your MacBook Pro’s internal SATA cable.

  • Moving domain controller vm between Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts

    Hello,
I have one stand alone Hyper-V host - hvserver01 (Hyper-V Server 2012 R2) and 3 VM's running on it. One Virtual machine is our company's additional Domain controller.
    I'm planning to install an additional hyper-v host - hvserver02 (Hyper-V Server 2012 R2) as well.
I have the following task to perform: I need to move domain controller virtual machine from hvserver01 to hvserver02.
So, for this operation which tool do i need - move, export/import or something else... ? or it will be necessary to install a new DC and then demote the old one.. ?
Is there a some special requirements when moving DC from one virtual host to another.. ?
And also, - MS Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is installed on both Hyper-V hosts.
Do you have some advices ?
    Thanks in advance,

There's no difference between a VM acting as your DC and any other VM as far as live-migration is concerned.
You should use live-migration. The VM will remain up and running during the entire process. Both Hyper-V hosts should be domain members. They should have vSwitches with the same exact name. They should have same CPU type, or configure CPU compatibility on
the VM. Configure Live-migration setting on each host. You can use Hyper-V Manager for live-migration..

  • Airport extreme hosted hard drive not recognized by Disk Utility

Hi, all.  I've had success for a month now hosting a 4T hardrive wirelessly via my Airport Extreme.  I use it for Time Machine backups and remote storage.  So I'd like to repartition that hardrive via Disk Utlity, however Disk Utility no longer recognizes the 4T hardrive hosted via my Airport Extreme.  How can I get my Airport Extreme external drive to show up in Disk Utility so I can format it again?

I'm not sure you're aware but I wanted to let you know that using an external drive connected to the Airport USB port as a Time Machine backup device isn't supported/recommended by Apple. don't be surprised if you think it's working and you go to use it to restore from a crash, and you can't.  Just a warning.

  • 500 GB Hard Drive Limit, Is it true?

I have a Mac Pro 2x 3.0 Dual Core which I purchased about 1.5 years ago (MacPro1,1 Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor Speed:3 GHz)
I remember when I purchased it the specs said 500GB drive was the max supported so I put 4 of them in. Now I have one drive that is starting to go bad. I see 1 TB drives are in the 100 dollar range and I was wondering if the 500 GB limit is set in stone, or if I put a 1 TB or 1.5TB drive in my machine will it see it? (I am hoping a OS or Firmware update would bypass this limit)
    Thanks

There is no limit. 500gb was the max available at the time. Many, many people are using larger than 500 gb drives, and I have the same machine as you so include me in that.
PS WD has a 2.0Tb drive in testing...
