Hyper-V 2012 R2 Remote Management with Windows 8.1 using Microsoft Account (Workgroup)

Hello,
I've set up a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Server and tried to manage it from a Windows 8.1 with a Microsoft Account. Everything is in the same workgroup. After many searches, the only way is set up the server for remote access, install RSAT and log on with an Administrator
account from the server in Server Manager console.
So, this situation generates a question: since it's impossible to set up a Microsoft Account in Hyper-V server as a local user, it's impossible to use "the same account and password" way to establish a link between server and desktop? I must use
a remote account for connection? Why Windows 8.1 local account and online account can't be merged as a single account?
By the way, there are some consoles that cmdkey doesn't work, so it's not an option.
Best regards.

I have not fully tried this myself but I know this:
A microsoft account can only be added to Server as a User, and only after Desktop Experience has been added.  This is also how you enable the MSFT Store on Server.
This also requires a Full install of Server and is not possible on the free Hyper-V Server SKU.
But, the legacy Server Manager console that Hyper-V Manager is built on has no concept of this new user account type.  And neither does Kerberos (the default security mechanism).
So, my guess is that the best you can do is treat it the same as any workgroup machines.
If you use Azure AD and sync your domain credentials, you have the password equivalent.  But you still require some AD in the middle.  This is simply the current state of affairs.

I know exactly what you mean. I wanted to use iManager, as when used
with RBS allows you to just give your helpdesk and other support staff
just the tools you want them to have, except when it comes to ZENworks.
We now have our staff using iManager for doing usual administration
tasks such as setting passwords, group membership etc and use C1 for
remote controlling PCs and assocaiting users with ZEN apps. That said
the app mentioned in the previous post works well if you just want your
    staff to remote control/view PC's
Apparently later versions of ZENworks will have the ability to be
    managed from within iManager.
    Hope this helps

  • Hotsync with Windows XP without using Outlook?

Can I Hotsync with Windows XP and use a program other than Outlook. I am using my old M100, thanks.
    Post relates to: Palm m100

    Hi,
I am brand new to this...bought an m100 at a garage sale...trying to use it on my windows xp...so I bought a trendnet usb to serial converter and set it up...i try to hotsync and it says "the connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established.  Please check your setup and try again".  At one point, COM4 was the port that was being used on local, but now it's saying that COM1 isn't available.  I don't know what i'm doing.  I just want to put some text into this device that i currently have stored in WORD on my PC.  Can someone help me in very simple terms?  I don't understand any of this lingo.

Not directly; OE is not supported by iTunes. You need full Outlook. Address Book in later versions of Windows is supported.

  • Login to Windows 8.1 VM using Microsoft Account

I created a Windows 8.1 VM from the gallery for MSDN subscribers.
It took me a while to figure out that I need hostname\username for login.
Now I added a new user using my Microsoft Account email address.
But I am not able to login to the VM using this MS Account.
    Any ideas?

Hi, Thomas, sorry for the inconvenience. You can follow the steps to sign in using Microsoft Account.
    1. Open "Control Panel\System and Security" and click "System\Allow remote access".
    2. Uncheck "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)".
    3. Connect to the VM from Microsoft Azure Portal again, download and save the RDP file. Edit the RDP file and replace "prompt for credentials:i:1" with "enablecredsspsupport:i:0".
    4. Save the change and connect to the VM. You will be allowed to choose the sign-in account.
    5. Once you successfully sign in using the Microsoft account, you can re-enable "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)". Next time you can use "microsoftaccount\account email" as user
    name in remote desktop dialog.

  • Using Microsoft account on domain-joined Windows 10 Technical Preview

    I have in-place upgraded a domain-joined Windows 7 machine to Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9860.
I can log on as before using my domain account, but I'd also like to be able to log on using my (personal) Microsoft account.
I tried typing [email protected] in the "user" box but this didn't work.
Any clue? Maybe the only way is to first create a local account and then associate it with the MSA but IMVHO this shouldn't be necessary...

    Hi sba,
If we updated to Windows 10 Technical Preview from Windows 7, Windows will keep your Windows settings, personal files, and most apps. And based on what I know, if we haven’t create a Microsoft Account on Windows 10 (or there is no Microsoft account available
before we update to Windows 10), it will not allow us to sign in with a Microsoft Account.
To make it able to sign in with a Microsoft account, we need either connect a local account to a Microsoft account (Under PC settings->Users and Accounts-> Your profile)
    or
    create a new user account(under PC settings->Users and Accounts->Other users->Mange other users-> Add a user);
    Best regards

  • Unable to Connect to WS2012R2 Hyper-V manager with Windows 7 version of Hyper V manager.

Just brought up a new WS2012R2 host server and created a gen 2 VM on it . I already have a WS2008R2 Host server with several VMs running. I manage the WS2008r2 WM from my Win7pro laptop using Hyper-V remote management tool. But when I try to connect to the
new WS2012R2 host server the  operation fails with the message 'The operation on computer 'HOSTSERVERNAME' failed'
I've checked for downloads to update the remote HyperV management tool and cant find any. Am I correct in assuming that I can  only connect to the Hyper-v Management tool for WS2012R2, from Win8 or higher? or is it something I've over looked. remote
management is enabled on the host server and the vm.

  • Server 2012 R2 - Remote Management Exception - Not working 100%

    So,
I am spinning up a ton of VM's for the University I work at in preparation for migrating to 2012 completely and I discovered something interesting today.
The "Allow Remote Management from these subnets" option, only partially enables remote management.  You still need to run the remote management enablement with NetSh (http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2008/06/05/how-to-enable-remote-administration-of-server-core-via-mmc-using-netsh.aspx)
for the certain functionality (Remote Firewall, VDS, FRS Options), which to me seems really weird.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    ----------------------------------------- Dan Sheppard

    Hi Dan,
If you want to manage remote server core with MMC (Microsoft Management Console), we need to configure Windows Firewall firstly to allow MMC snap-in(s) to connect on the remote server core, since your servers are Server 2012 and newer, so we can also use
the powershell cmdlet instead of cmd netsh:
    Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup "Remote Service Management"
In addition, you can also use Windows Powershell to help you to remote access with Powershell Remoting, Powershell has substantial Modules and Cmdlets to help us to manage server.
For more detailed information to manage server core, please refer to this article:

  • Remote Management and Windows VNC clients

    Hey guys,
I recently had a go at getting the built-in VNC server in Leopard (as part of remote management) up and running.
Remote control works flawlessly from other Macs, but it refuses connections to Windows clients most of the time (throws up errors like 'Error waiting for server message' or something).
Any ideas? I thought it might have something to do with the Windows client not understanding the encryption, but haven't found any way to change security settings.
    Thanks in advance!

Have you giving the server a VNC password?
System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Management -> Computer Settings -> VNC viewers may control screen with password: xxxxxxx
What VNC client are you using on Windows. Not all VNC clients are created equal? I know about TightVNC (which has been reported to work), RealVNC, and UltraVNC are 3 that I've heard about.
You can also install your own VNC server (in parallel using a different port or instead of the Mac OS X VNC). Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) has been used successfully for years. After all not all VNC servers are created equal either

  • Windows 2012 & 8.1 ADMX with Windows 7 System

    Hello,
We are a Windows 2008R2 & Windows 7 Ent Shop with System Center 2012 R2 & PKI Servers.
We need to deploy 30 Windows 8.1 Enterprise Lenovo Tablets to the field.
Would all our Windows 7 GPO still work if we upgrade/update our Central Store with Windows 2012 & 8.1 Definitions?
Can any problem occur that we should be prepared for?
    Thanks!

    > Windows 7 and 8.  I need to know if ALL of my existing Windows 7 GPO’s
    > will still work if I update my ADMX templates to the newest versions.
Existing GPOs don't take care of ADM(X) templates as long as you don't
edit them, so yes, they will continue to work perfectly.
THere was an issue in WIndows Vista with ADMX from WIn7 or above (Vista
doesn't support the new reg_multi_sz possibilities introduced with W7),
but W7/W8/W8.1 all support the newest ADMX templates.

  • SCCM 2012 Software Update Management for Windows Servers and how to automatic set SCOM maintenance mode?

    Hi,
We planning to go one level higher to automat and have more dynamic Software Update Management for Windows Servers. We have SCCM 2012 R2, SCOM 2012 R2 and SCO 2012 R2.
Our plan is to pur server in an AD-Group to get Update Schedule, from the servers will be importet to an Collection for Automatic Update and reboot. If I understand Everything right SCOM can't read AD-Group and put then in an Schedule maintenance mode. SCOM
can read reg value as exempel.
IS there any smar way to make the SCOM Maintenance Mode Schedule dynamic?
    I found this
    http://www.scom2k7.com/scom-2012-maintenance-mode-scheduler/?
    /SaiTech

You could use Orchestrator to put the servers from a specific collection, or AD group, in maintenance mode in SCOM. For an example see:

  • 3 Node hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Clustering with Storage spaces on one of the Hyper-V hosts

    Hi,
We have 3x Dell R720s with 5x 600GB 3.5 15K SAS and 128 GB RAM each. Was wondering if I could setup a Fail-over Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clustering with these 3 with the shared storage for the CSV being provided by one of the Hyper-V hosts with storage spaces installed
(Is storage spaces supported on Hyper-V?) Or I can use a 2-Node Failover clustering and the third one as a standalone Hyper-V or Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and storage spaces.
Each Server comes with QP 1G and a DP10G nics so that I can dedicate the 10G nics for iSCSI
Dont have a SAN or a 10G switch so it would be a crossover cable connection between the servers.
Most of the VMs would be Non-HA. Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 would be the only VMS running as HA-VMs. CSV for the Hyper-V Failover cluster would be provided by the storage spaces.

I thought I was tying to do just that with 8x600 GB RAID-10 using the H/W RAID controller (on the 3rd Server) and creating CSVs out of that space so as to provide better storage performance for the HA-VMs.
    1. Storage Server : 8x 600GB RAID-10 (For CSVs to house all HA-VMs running on the other 2 Servers) It may also run some local VMs that have very little disk I/O
    2. Hyper-V-1 : Will act has primary HYPER-V hopst for 2x Exchange and Database Server HA-VMs (the VMDXs would be stored on the Storage Servers CSVs on top of the 8x600GB RAID-10). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
    3. Hyper-V-2 : Will act as a Hyper-V host when the above HA-VMs fail-over to this one (when HYPER-V-1 is down for any reason). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
The single point of failure for the HA-VMs (non HA-VMs are non-HA so its OK if they are down for some time) is the Storage Server. The Exchange servers here are DAG peers to the Exchange Servers at the head office so in case the storage server mainboard
goes down (disk failure is mitigated using RAID, other components such as RAM, mainboard may still go but their % failure is relatively low) the local exchange servers would be down but exchange clients will still be able to do their email related tasks using
    the HO Exchange servers.
Also they are under 4hr mission critical support including entire server replacement within the 4 hour period.
If you're OK with your shared storage being a single point of failure then sure you can proceed the way you've listed. However you'll still route all VM-related I/O over Ethernet which is obviously slower then running VMs from DAS (with or without virtual SAN
LUN-to-LUN replication layer) as DAS has higher bandwidth and smaller latency. Also with your scenario you exclude one host from your hypervisor cluster so running VMs on a pair of hosts instead of three would give you much worse performance and resilience:
with 1 from 3 physical hosts lost cluster would be still operable and with 1 from 2 lost all VMs booted on a single node could give you inadequate performance. So make sure your hosts would be insanely underprovisioned as every single node should be able to
handle ALL workload in case of disaster. Good luck and happy clustering :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • SCP, SSH and SFTP in CMD / File-Explorer and SSH key management with Windows Credential Manger

Please add SSH, SFTP and SCP in CMD and File Explorer.
Also, allow us to copy to FTP in File Explorer.
Would be nice to have the SSH credentials managed by Windows Credentials Manager.

Even with the RHEL firewall completely disabled, it has the same upper limit. SCP between the Solaris systems, with ipfilter running on both systems and both systems on completely different networks, is not a problem. Between Solaris and RHEL, same network but different subnet, RHEL with no firewall running (only while troubleshooting this, don't panic), still a problem. Using PuTTY SFTP from/to any of the systems is fine, even though on different networks. The mtu on the RHEL was the same as the Solaris systems (1500) - changing values on the RHEL increased the upper limit but still hit a ceiling. Only have one RHEL system so I can't see whether RHEL-RHEL transfers are affected, only those between Solaris, PuTTY on Windows, and the one RHEL system.
