Hyper V 2012 VM stopping state

I have an issue with a VM that enters the stopping state. This happens every time a scheduled reboot occurs after applying windows updates. The VM was P2V using SCVMM 2012 SP1. The hosts are running Hyper-V 2012. The VM is W2008 R2.
I am unable to kill the VMWP.exe process, error: 'access denied'
I cannot move any other VMs to other host, error: 'resource locked status'
The only workaround I have found is to power cycle the host which forces the VMs to live migrate onto other hosts. This also brings up the problem VM and releases from stopping state.
I have applied hotfix KB2823643 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2823643) but no change.
This is happening when the VM is on all hosts.
Any ideas why?

Try this hotfix also -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2848344
There is a case with the similar error message but with a different symptom. I'm advised to look at the vssadmin writers to verify if at the time of the reboot I have an
issue. Related article below.

Sadly I haven't had to apply any major updates so hard to replicate this. Next reboot scheduled Monday so maybe an update then :s
Good luck

  • Strange behaviour of Hyper-v 2012 network

    Hello!
I have been testing Server 2012 hyper-v on a server with 2 gigabit nics, each one connected to gigabit cisco switch.
One nic is "straight" management with ip 10.179.10.30 and second - ip 10.179.10.31 is used for hyper-v machines.
I created external virtual switch on interface 10.179.10.31, deploy virtual machine- everything workrd fine until I checked "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" on virtyal switch settings.
After that all vms on host become freezing in stopping state, and i cannot restart hyper-v service.  But when i disconnect cable from "straignt" interface 10.179.10.30 it again works fine.
I'm very confused of such situation and i need help to understand whats going on. No vlans used in my configuration, vm gets ip address from DHCP from the same subnet 10.179.10.0/24.
I had tested this situation on different servers but always had the same results. Maybe i should configure switch ports somehow?

    Brian,
So what should we do for this same subnet situation? I also have this type of situation. I have 2 Hyper-V host with a dedicated NIC for management and for VM production ( VM connecting to the outside world).
The Hyper-V host dedicated NIC has a static IP address ( 192.168.1.11) and the VM production NIC gets an IP address via DHCP ( same subnet through 192.168.1.xxx). Cluster configuration network validation is giving a warning of same subnet.
For the VM production NIC , I created a Virtual Switch so it created a Vethernet , that my VM can use. should I allow management operating system to share this network adapter?
For the Management NIC should I leave it alone or should I create another virtual switch for it (as you say it created a multi homed scenario)?
    Please advice.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 Remote Management with Windows 8.1 using Microsoft Account (Workgroup)

    Hello,
I've set up a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Server and tried to manage it from a Windows 8.1 with a Microsoft Account. Everything is in the same workgroup. After many searches, the only way is set up the server for remote access, install RSAT and log on with an Administrator
account from the server in Server Manager console.
So, this situation generates a question: since it's impossible to set up a Microsoft Account in Hyper-V server as a local user, it's impossible to use "the same account and password" way to establish a link between server and desktop? I must use
a remote account for connection? Why Windows 8.1 local account and online account can't be merged as a single account?
By the way, there are some consoles that cmdkey doesn't work, so it's not an option.
    Best regards.

I have not fully tried this myself but I know this:
A microsoft account can only be added to Server as a User, and only after Desktop Experience has been added.  This is also how you enable the MSFT Store on Server.
This also requires a Full install of Server and is not possible on the free Hyper-V Server SKU.
But, the legacy Server Manager console that Hyper-V Manager is built on has no concept of this new user account type.  And neither does Kerberos (the default security mechanism).
So, my guess is that the best you can do is treat it the same as any workgroup machines.
If you use Azure AD and sync your domain credentials, you have the password equivalent.  But you still require some AD in the middle.  This is simply the current state of affairs.

  • Delegate permission on Hyper-V 2012 R2

    Hi
I'm having problem to delegate permission on Hyper-V 2012R2,
Error - " you do not have the required permission to complete this task contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer 'localhost' "
Everything is working great on Hyper-V 2012 (NOT R2).
The steps that i'm doing are:
    1)Using the AzMan.msc i'm opening the 'InitialStore.xml'.
2)in the Role Definition i'm creating new Role Definition.
3)After creating the Role Definition i'm adding the following tasks :
     a. Allow Input to Virtual Machine.
     b.Allow Output from virtual Machine.
     c.Pause and Restart VM
     d.Read Service Configuration
     e.Start VM
     f.Stop VM
     g.View VM Configuration
4)In the Role Assignments I'm creating new group.
5)Adding the user from the AD.
6)Adding the user to Remote Desktop Users in the server management.
As i mentioned in server 2012 (NOT R2) it working great, since i started to install 2012R2 it's stopped working.
    Any idea?

When searching this forum, you will find that issues with AzMan have been previously reported.  The reason is that AzMan for Hyper-V has been deprecated and no longer supports what you are attempting to accomplish.  This is now handled via
    System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

  • VMs on Hyper-V 2012 R2 are shutting down automatically

    Hello Guys!
I'm having a huge problem in my Hyper-V 2012 R2 environment. Yesterday, 9 of 40 VMs were shutdown automatically, and so, caused a downtime problem to my customers in the business hours.
I checked in the Event Viewer (Application / System /  Microsoft - Windows - Hyper) of the Host and VM but I couldn't locate any log related to this unexpected shutdown.
It occurred twice yesterday, the first in the morning and the second in the afternoon. I'm afraid that this issue can happen again. I've tried to locate some logs to identify this problem, but no luck here.
My question: Is there any other place where it can help me in this troubleshooting to find the root cause?
Obs: All the VMs are licensed / activated.
Obs2: The VMs are Win 2008 R2 Std

    Hello Brian!
The customers doesn't have access using the RDP / ICA. The role machines is web servers.
In the VMs I can find only the following log:

    Description:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
But on the Host Hyper-V I cannot find any error related to this failure as I described in this thread.

  • Hyper-v 2012 R2 server core recommendations for single server setup

    Hi All,
Next weekend I will be installing a brand new Dell 720 server for a client of mine.
I would like to hear some recommendations on how to install this hypervisor.
Let me state that I have had some experience with virtualization technology  in the past with VMWARE ESXi.
This is a small client with under 10 users but I have learned that with the 2012 product offering you cannot get Small Business Server any more. I know Microsoft has Windows server 2012 Essentials but you would have to have Exchange server in the cloud which
my client does not want. He wants to run his Exchange server in house.
Also he needs Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Server) because his accounting application requires it.
He has an existing Windows 2003 domain controller that eventually has to be decommissioned because it is too old and slow.
So I thought I install Hyper-v 2012 R2 core on the new server and then create 2 VMs:
    1) Windows 2012 STD to run as a secondary domain controller.
    2) Windows 2012 STD member server with Exchange server 2013 and Remote Desktop Services role.
    My questions here are these:
    1) Do I install the Hypervisor in workgroup or domain mode?
    2) When I am finished with the old server do I transfer the AD FSMO roles onto the VM that is acting as a domain controller?
The new server has 2 CPUs. How does Microsoft licensing go here? I know that Windows 2012 STD gives me 2 instances with the same product key on the same server for 1 CPU. What happens if you have 2?
Can someone give me some insight on how to go about this? I remember that I found this easier with VMWARE Esxi.
Now with Hyper-V I need to also get a management workstation with Windows 8 professional on it to manage the Hyper-V core server.
    Thanks and regards
    Alfred

    In regard to the VM's:
1.) DC: If you're going to be installing a second domain controller that is 2012 R2, you might consider reading this guide first.
    http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2012/07/30/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-or-windows-server-2003-r2-to-windows-server-2012.aspx
2.) Exchange: Here's the guide for installing Exchange 2013 on Server 2012.  I don't believe R2 is supported yet for 2013.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14506.how-to-install-exchange-2013-on-windows-server-2012.aspx
3.) Host: You'd install the host in domain mode....but that point may be moot after you read #5.
4.) FSMO: I would verify the health of the 2012 DC before moving the roles.  All too often I'll see a new DC get stood up, sysvol won't be published, the engineer will be in a rush to move the FSMO's, and things get a little sideways.  Ultimately
you don't HAVE to move the FSMO's until you are ready to decommission the 2003 box.
5.) Licensing:  No licensing rights convey with Hyper-V Core, so this may not be best for your scenario.  See the queen mother of all Hyper-V licensing posts here -
    http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=13090
For what it's worth, plenty of SMB's are going to Office 365 to avoid the on-prem administration headache, but your client wants what your client wants. Sorry if this isn't the news you wanted but I hope it helps.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2, integration services issue on multiple VMs

    Hello,
I came to you because we encounter a technical issue on one of our Hyper-V (2012 R2).
Our backup (Veeam backup in last version) are still failing with error :

After checking integration service states of those VMs on the Hyper-V, we get this result :

Enable-VMIntegrationService -VMName MyVM -Name VSS,Shutdown,"Key-Value Pair Exchange"
The status is OK, but If I retry my backup I have the same error.
So, is there a way to reinstall integration service component without rebooting ?
    Many thanks for your help.

On the Windows VMs that are not 2012 R2, insert the Integration media ISO, install it, and reboot.
When all is done, run this:
    # Input:
    $HVHost = "YourHostHere"
    # Processing:
    $VMInfo = @()
    Get-VM -ComputerName $HVHost | where { $_.State -eq "Running" } | % {

    $Info | Add-Member "IntegrationServicesVersion" $_.IntegrationServicesVersion
    $OS = Invoke-Command -ComputerName $_.Name { (Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem).version } -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
    $Info | Add-Member "OSVersion" $OS
    $VMInfo += $Info
    # Output:

    $VMInfo | FT -AutoSize
    $VMInfo | Export-Csv .\VMInfo.csv -NoTypeInformation

  • Current best practice for Time service settings for Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host and guest OS's

I am trying to find out what the current best practice is for Time service settings in a Hyper-V 2012 environment. I find conflicting information. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have found some different sources (links below) but again the
    are not consistent. Thanks
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/11/19/time-synchronization-in-hyper-v.aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/virtual_active_directory_domain_controller_virtualization_hyperv(v=ws.10).aspx
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12709.time-services-for-a-domain-controller-on-hyper-v.aspx

From the first link provided by Brian, it does state that the time service should be off, but then the update changes that statement.  Still best to rely on the first link in the OP - it was written by the guy that has been responsible for much of what
gets coded into Hyper-V, starting from before there ever was a Hyper-V.  I'd say that's a pretty reliable source.
    Time service
For virtual machines that are configured as domain controllers, it is recommended that you disable time synchronization between the host system and guest operating system acting as a domain controller. This enables your guest domain controller to synchronize
    time from the domain hierarchy.
To disable the Hyper-V time synchronization provider, shut down the VM and clear the Time synchronization check box under Integration Services.
    Note
This guidance has been recently updated to reflect the current recommendation to synchronize time for the guest domain controller from only the domain hierarchy, rather than the previous recommendation to partially disable time synchronization between the
host system and guest domain controller.

  • How to uninstall Hyper R2 2012 Sever W/O BACKUP

Okay, I downloaded Hyper-V R2 2012, I thought it was like a software such as VM-Player and VirtualBox. But it wasn't and altered my Operating System completely, and now I'm stuck on logging into Hyper V R2 2012 Server whenever I start it up. In there it
has a small window which lets you type in commands, for example "12" for restarting and such cases. I tried to use backup, but I don't have the iso file of Windows 8, nor can I use any methods to backup because I cannot save my data to a disc after
    Hyper-V is installed/booted up.
Is there any way to restore my OS to windows 8.1 again? Or reverting it back to orginal state without the backup? Or maybe even is there a way to backup the laptop THEN use it to restore the Windows 8.1 Version?? I really want to uninstall Hyper-V and have
back my old OS! Please help and thanks!

Hyper-V server is a OS, when you installed it, you likely overwrote your old OS.
Can you see your old folders on the hard drive from command prompt in Hyper-V 2012?
You may be able to copy those off to a USB disk, but the only way to get Windows 8.1 back is to reinstall it.
Hyper-V is available as a feature in Windows 8.1 Pro.

  • 2008R2 Virtual machine shutting down unexpected on Hyper-V 2012 server

I have a problem where one of my 2008 R2 virtual servers are shutting down unexpected every Friday at more or less the same time. This has happen 2 Fridays in a row now and the time is 13:01:30 and 13:01:10. I did some investigation on the event viewer and
it tells me the following: (Error) The previous system shutdown at 01:01:10 PM on ‎2014/‎08/‎01 was unexpected.  Event ID: 6008 which I have goggled and did not find much on this ID?    I also found the following event more or less the same
time as the first one: (Critical) The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Event ID: 41.  In most posts it looks like if it could
be hardware related? But how do I justify this on a virtual machine?
Some Infrastructure background: It is a 2008 R2 virtual server running on 2012 Hyper-V, 2012 server. SCVMM is not configured so all administration is done through Hyper-V manager. The virtual machine is backup up by Symantec backup exec and the Full backup
only start at 23:00pm night time. No scheduled shut-downs are configured and all servers are running on UPS power, the virtual server are also configured to boot up automatically after any failure. But in this case the server is completely shut-down and I
have to manually start the server up again.
I hope there are somebody who can give some guidance on my problem?
    Regards
    Juan Krynie

    Hi Sam
    Thanks for the reply!
Yes, all disk space is on the host, I have 2 hosts running Hyper V each with their own set of virtual servers, I am planning a cluster in the near future, but for now all disk space for all virtual server are on the host, there is more than enough disk space
left on all drives. Please below output from command, I only posted first few lines as there are to many lines.

  • DPM2012 R2 protecting Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster VMs, some appear offline in DPM

    Hello,
We have 2 separate Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clusters using iSCSI SAN CSVs as storage. For these I have set up 2 PSGs for VM backups using checkpoints (As new in DPM 2012R2/Hyper.V 2012 R2)
90% of the VM backups work in online mode but some shows as Offline when running the DPMGuide to add a VM to a PSG.The server OS versions differs between WS2003 R2 SP2/WS2008 SP2 / WS2008 R2 SP1 / WS 2012.
Windows Server Backup is installed on all VMs and vssadmin list writers shows no errors. How can I elaborate and solve this issue?
    Thx /Tony

    Hi Elton,
Thanks for your answer, My comments in bold indent below.
The Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
Installed and enabled on all those VMs
A virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
I know this is a supposed issue, however all other VMs with both Dynamic / Fixed disk VMs
does work. And among these failing we have both dynamic / Fixed disks as well.
A virtual machine has one or more volumes that are based on non-NTFS file systems.
    All Vms has NTFS
In a cluster configuration, the virtual machine Cluster Resource Group is offline.
The Cluster Resource Group is online
A virtual machine is not in a running state.
    All are running
A Shadow Storage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
Interesting, how do I check this in the VM itself ?
    Thx /Tony

  • What is the Proper way to protect 2012 R2 DC on Hyper-V 2012 R2?

    Hello,
I have one physical DC running server 2008 R2 of which I am protecting the system state with DPM 2012 R2.  I also have one Virtual DC running server 2012 R2 on a Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster.  I am currently protecting the system state of my Server
2012 DC VM in one protection group and protecting the Hyper-V VM itself with DPM 2012 R2.  After reading about Server 2012 VM-GenerationID and how it prevents USN rollbacks on a Virtual DC restoration, I am thinking that I should only need to protect
my Virtual DC by just protecting the VM itself.
Question, Do I still need to protect the system state of a server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Virtual DC?  Or should we now just need to protect the VM itself [no system state]?
    Thanks,
    Rob

In every Environment, there should be a physical DC, this one should be backup up with BMR, so the Active Directory will bee backed up correctly
Every VM DC is enough to backup the VM
If all your DC are virtual, pleas ebackup one with BMR

  • Hyper V 2012 R2 Cluster Host Continusly restarting

    Hi,
I have a new Hyper V 2012 Data Center Edition 3 Hosts Cluster with shared SAN storage network. I I restarted one host after due to a guest VM not shutting down well, unfortunately after the host hard restart windows OS goes Getting Ready  to updating
and stopping and restarting the cluster services automatically then goes system restart. with out going to windows desktop and  its continually doing the same thing. MY server is HP BL 680 G7...

    Hi Joy Devis,
In addition , if the node can not be fixed  (cause of some corruption ), you may think of remove the node and add it after rebuilding the node .
For details please refer to the article regarding "Add a Server to a Failover Cluster":
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730998.aspx
    Hope this helps

  • The Service Broker endpoint is in disabled or stopped state.

    Hi All,
I am getting too many errors  messages like "The Service Broker endpoint is in disabled or stopped state." in my sql server error logs. I have two instance with SQL server 2012 along with SP1 (Enterprises Edition) and
enabled Always On features b/w the server for more than 10 users database to meet HADR . My SQL Server log is getting fulled because of this error messages.
I tried below query to identified  Service Broker is enabled or disalbed on all user databases.
    SELECTis_broker_enabled FROMsys.databases
    WHEREname= 'Database_Name'
    Output was 0
I can't alter the database statement to enable Service since its configured in database mirroing.
Does it affects the performanc of the database/instance/with database mirroirng or should Ignore the error message.
Any Idea how to troubleshoot the issue
    Thanks
    Raghu

    Hi,
It’s a default behavior. The message will show when AlwaysOn availability group Listener is created and SQL Server binds the Listener’s IP dynamically.
There is no method to suppress the message. These messages are informational message and do not cause any harm and can safely be ignored.
    Thanks.

  • Virtual SAN Manager Hyper-V 2012 R2 iSCSI

I think I know the answer to this question, but one someone to tell me for sure....
We currently have iSCSI San's implemented in our organization.  We are using Hyper-V 2012 R2 and doing nothing fancy with it.  We could like to be able to take advantage of Virtual SAN Manager within Hyper-V to take care of the snapshotting, etc..
It appears that in order to use this you must have a FC SAN.  Can someone tell me if this is a correct statement or not?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi jesmitch,
    Yes , it is .
plaese refer to following preparation :
One or more installations of Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role installed.
A computer with one or more Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) that have an updated HBA driver that supports virtual Fibre Channel. Updated HBA drivers are included with the in-box HBA drivers for some models. The HBA ports to be used with virtual
Fibre Channel should be set up in a Fibre Channel topology that supports NPIV. To determine whether your hardware supports virtual Fibre Channel, contact your hardware vendor or OEM.
    An NPIV-enabled SAN.
Virtual machines configured to use a virtual Fibre Channel adapter, which must use Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012 as the guest operating system.
Storage accessed through a virtual Fibre Channel supports devices that present logical units. Virtual Fibre Channel logical units cannot be used as boot media.
