Hyper-V as User on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro

I believe I'm having permission issues when attempting to use Hyper-V on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro.  Hyper-V seems to install cleanly, and from an admin account I can use the Hyper-V Manager without issue and connect to a running VM.  However
if I attempt to use the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection application from the same account, it reports "You do now have the required permission to complete this task..." And attempts to run either the Manager or the Virtual Machine Connection result
in the same on a standard user account.
Standard wisdom seems to be to add the user account to the "Hyper-V Administrators" group but when I've looked in the Computer Management utility and the group "Hyper-V Administrators" does not exist. I've tried manually adding full
permissions to the WMI interfaces for CIMV2, StandardCimv2 and Virtualization namespaces through the WMI Control Properties interface. I've also added the user to the "Administrator" role for Hyper-V services in AzMan as a long shot.  Beyond
this, I'm not sure where to go next.
The end goal is to be able to run the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection Utility from a non-administrative user. Any advice is appreciated.
-Matthias

Your question might be more general to Hyper-V and not specifically embedded. WE8.1 is Windows 8.1 with lockdown features so there is nothing special. Account level (Administrator vs. non-administrator) does effect what permissions are granted to access
certain OS features.
Maybe the Hyper-V forum can address the account level -

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro - Start Screen Layout Deployment GPO

We have recently finished signing our Microsoft Customer License Agreement (CLA) for reselling Windows on a diagnostic tool for our industry. We developed our software with Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro from an MSDN source. Installed from MSDN, configured,
put 20 mobile devices in the field for testing, and pushed updates to them. As a part of this we were able to remotely modify the start screen and add new icons for the newly installed software. Now that the MS CLA is complete we have received the official
Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro OPK from Microsoft Ireland and recreated our setup. So far all but one function works as expected. We are finding that we are unable to modify the Start Screen Layout via XML file or any other method as we did with the MSDN setup.
I have reviewed HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion for build and product ID information to find the MSDN install and the OPK install both show the same information other than install date. The DigitalIDs are different though.
We needed the Embedded version for the Unified Write Filter and after being able to modify the start screen layout with our MSDN copy all looked great. After not being able to modify the start screen layout with our official OPK copy of 8.1 we've done additional
searching to find: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/71f0be7a-43af-4ca3-a068-f99b92217e2a/windows-81-start-screen-layout-gpo?forum=w81previtpro Which plainly says that 8.1 PRO is NOT able to do this.
    Is this correct?
If so why might our MSDN installation have worked while the OPK installation does not?
Why wouldn't an EMBEDDED INDUSTRY PRO version not allow for such a simple function? People using this version I would image would require the most flexibility and customizable options versus another, no?
If this advanced and highly modifiable version of 8.1 pro cannot do this then how might it be recommended to accomplish this goal?
Please help as this may soon push our development out much further.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joey

    Hi HVACjoe
For general system start screen control is supported in the Windows 8.1 Enterprise operating system, the Windows RT 8.1 operating system with sideloading enabled, and in all editions of the Windows Server
2012 R2 operating system. Start screen control is not supported in the Windows 8.1 Pro operating system.
As Tripredacus mentioned that Windows Embedded support is not typically handled on the public forums and Microsoft Developer Network distributes special editions of Windows for testing and development purposes, those are not general purpose licenses and
the validity of the key has a time limit, we could not access resources from MSDN for test.
We suggest you look for help from your Embedded Partner or MSDN forum

You could get more information from following link about start screen lay out.

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry pro's FilterAdministratorToken setting affect SQL Builtin\Administrator access

I have an SCCM built Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Pro image which will be used to deploy multiple Point-of-Sale (POS) platforms.
In that deployment process of the image, which consists of a preinstalled SQL Express 2012 database and the POS application, the application provides a proces that renames the machine to a specific POS register number\name and it also renames the SQL Server
    name accordingly.
In the course of building this image I had changed the FilterAdministratorToken registry value to 1 so I could run iExplorer. Doing so changed the ability of the Builtin\Adminstrator
to drop a d add the SQL Server name.
Is there an additional setting that will allow me to set the FilterAdministratorToken and
still be able to use the Builtin\Administrator to manage\reconfigure SQL?
It seems like this setting is just the opposite effect in SQL of what you would really expect. It allows access in Windows to things like iE but restricts access in SQL.
    Jim

The issue can actually be manage within iE so I do not have to change Windows security settings.
Changing where iE runs via the Tools\Program menu allows iE to run from the Desktop. Changing the
FilterAdministratorToken method allows iE to run from the Start Screen, but imposes other unwanted Windows Security elements such as the SQL security issue. See:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/devschool/archive/2013/08/12/ie-11-won-t-open-in-the-windows-8-1-start-screen.aspx.
Setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\AplicationTileImmersiveActivation control where iE runs from and I assume inherits it permissions

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro Application Launcher Remote Desktop Services Feed VDI with Windows Store Remote Desktop Client

I wanted to make kiosks which are joined into a domain and set up with an Remote Desktop Web Feed with VDI Desktops (to support Single Sign On and minimize configuration needs on the client side). And I wanted to lock those Clients to launch only the Remote
Desktop Windows Store application. And if somebody clicks on a Desktop Pool then connect to the choosen Pool. But instead of doing this the Remote Desktop application opens the Pool within the old mstsc.exe and right after connecting the OS switches the focus
back to the Remote Desktop Windows Store application. And nobody can work in the office with this configuration.
So how can I correct this problem? Any other solutions? What is the official way to doing this?

    Hi,
Based on my test, we cannot associate .rdp files with the Remote Desktop Windows Store App. Therefore, you may have to use MSTSC or configure the setting in the Remote Desktop
    Windows Store App manually.

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro in mode shell launcher ?

Whether it will be possible to have the WEI 8.1 pro in mode shell launcher like in WES8 (black screen without desktop) ?

Yes. Shell Launcher is supported in WEI8.1 -

As bagira520 points out, you can set shell launcher up in ELM. You can also enable it in an answer file via SIM, but to actually enable it automatically during OS install, you will have to run a power shell script. Discussed here:

  • What is the different between various version of windows embedded 8.1

    Hi,
I found the following various Windows Embedded 8.1 OS names:
    Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry
    Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro
    Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise
There is also some OS with "retail as its suffix.
Is there a comparison table to clarify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Really? Having been dragged kicking and screaming into the 8.1 Industry Pro nightmare.
I have 2 different product keys from oasign.
Windows(R) Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro (ESD)
Windows(R) Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro Retail (ESD)
It really is hard to tell which one I want since I have yet to find something laying out the differences.
Not helped by the fact that I need to have several of these in production next month -.-!

  • Anyone heard about Windows Embedded POSReady 7 Pro?

Has anyone heard about Windows Embedded POSReady 7 Pro? We manufacture ATMs and were forced to switch from Windows Embedded POSReady 7 to Windows 7 Professional FES last year due to changes in the additional terms (ATs) which stated that
POSReady 7 (without the "Pro"-suffix) must not be used with ATMs.
Since then we started implementing OA 2.1, for being able to activate our machines automatically and had to inform all our customers that we now have to buy more expensive licenses with reduced functionality (no BitLocker in Win7Prof, no Embedded Enabling
    Features, no LP support, etc.).
Last week I found a very interesting EULA on MyOEM.microsoft.com for the new OS-variant "Windows Embedded POSReady 7 Pro", which suddenly is allowed on ATMs explicitly:
    2. ADDITIONAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS AND/OR USE RIGHTS
    a. Specific Use. You may use the software on a device with automated teller machine (“ATM”) as the primary functionality.
    See
    https://myoem.microsoft.com/oem/myoem/en/topics/Licensing/emblicres/Pages/DP-WinEmbPOSReady7ProEULA.aspx for details.
Our distributor supported us and already found the ATs for Windows Embedded POSReady 7 Pro, but was also surprised that Microsoft introduced this new variant.
Does anybody know more about it?
Where can we (indirect embedded OEM, who purchases through distribution) get such relevant information earlier? ( The only source of information I know is the MyOEM-portal) And why did Microsoft release the new variant now?
    Best regards, Roman Maier

I have never heard of a Pro version for POSReady 7. It is not listed in the life cycle:
    https://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/product-lifecycles.aspx
Nor is there a download for it:
    https://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/downloads.aspx
Sounds like someone is doing some funny business. The successor to POSReady 7 is Windows Embedded 8.x Industry, which comes in two flavors - Pro and Enterprise.

  • Windows Embedded 7 on the Nokia Booklet?

Considering the 1GB memory limitation, would there be any noticeable performance gain after installing Windows Embedded 7? While researching performance benchmarks of WES7, I came across this statement on a user forum that caught my attention:
BogdanV: My first try at building a custom CE image and I have to say, the increase in performance is spectacular on a Atom netbook !
He goes on to later add:
BogdanV: Well, I've got Compact Embedded 7 via Connect (from Microsoft), so you should be able to get it too
EDIT: I mean Standard, not Compact ... I keep forgeting.

  • Transparent Windows Forms in Windows Embedded Compact 7

I am looking for a solution to make the background of a Windows Forms in a Windows Embedded Compact 7 device transparent. These approaches have failed:
    - override void OnPaintBackground with empty code block
    - using the open source project AlphaMobileControls

Sorry, I thought that article had more detail.  Now I look at it again it's rather less useful than I thought.
    bitblt is copying pixels.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa452879.aspx
The way this would have to work ( afaik ) is you copy some proportion of the bits out the rectangle behind your window.
If you want low opacity rather than completely transparent you would merge them with whatever colour you want the background to look a bit like.
You'd be painting a picture onto the background in the onpaint.
If your user moves the "transparent" window then you need to copy the background from the new location.
If it were me I'd push back on the requirement.
    Hope that helps.

  • Export H264 pass-through movie with embedded text track QuickTime Pro 7 Windows?

Using QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows, I add a text track with closed captions to my H264 .mp4 videos.
The text track works great until I try to export it.  After I've added the text track, the text track is displayed as long as the track is selected to be active using the Movie Inspector track GUI.
My movies are encoded as H264 for cross-platform compatibility, and need to remain in this format.  The only way to save them in QuickTimePro 7 for Windows is to Export Movie to MPEG-4.  I select Pass-Through mode to retain the resolution and bandwidth parameters that I initially encoded the video with.
Unfortunately, after I export to MPEG-4, the caption track is lost.  It disappears.  When I open the newly exported MPEG-4 caption file, and select Movie Inspector, the caption track is missing.  Inspector only shows video and audio tracks.
If QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows correctly exported my text track with the video and audio tracks, then users would be able to view the closed captions upon playback in QuickTime Player by selecting View--> Show Closed Captioning (Ctrl+Alt+T).
Anyone been able to export to MPEG-4 pass-through movie with embedded text track QuickTime Pro 7 Windows?
    Thank you!

The following MSDN threads explain the cause of the problem and provide some guidance on how to change your application to resolve the problem:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6cda1576-2cf7-4b2a-9e57-0c55f1c2f500/ok-button-dissapears-on-windows-mobile-65?forum=netfxcompact

Another solution, instead of changing your application, is for the user to simply press the physical Ok button on the device's keyboard (assuming that the device has an Ok button).  For example, some rugged devices such as Intermec or Motorola
have a physical keyboard with an Ok button, or another physical button can be re-mapped to act as the Ok button.  Contact your device supplier if you need to do this.
